Okay I haven’t read the review, just the summary points and score. I want to go into the game knowing as little as possible.
My only concern is the mentioning of “mandatory stealth” (a feature I believe is purely detrimental to game design and offers no positives). Are these instant game overs when spotted? Or can you try to escape but it’s all a “c*ck up cascade” so basically just a drawn out game over? Or do you actually have the chance to escape and hide once more within the confines of a reasonable challenge?
@kepsux Basically, the game is actually running on a sever somewhere and you are remotely controlling the game from your console. Basically imagine your Switch is just a controller and monitor and the actual console is in another town / country / continent that you connect to via the internet.
I don’t think you need to pay for NS Online, but you have to pay for what is basically a pass to access the game. But when they turn the server off, that’s it. Access completely gone.
I was once a big fan of the series, but after Kingdom Hearts 2 it started to go downhill and become more incomprehensible (Birth by Sleep was good though). Also Sora started to annoy me more as it felt like he became even more childish in the later games whilst in KH2 there were signs of growing maturity. KH3 remains one of my biggest disappointments in gaming.
I actually was somewhat interested in replaying the older titles on Switch as it’s been so long but not on cloud versions and their glorified rentals.
As stated, Apple makes its money from its cut from purchases on the App Store and In-App purchases (i.e Microtransactions). A better comparison would probably be with Valve or Epic.
If anything this just goes to show how lucrative the mobile game market can be, but like everything the market is already pretty bloated so unless you come up with something new that captures the general market, anyone thinking of jumping on the bandwagon now is likely to see failure.
It also makes you think more about what methods are used to make so much money. The size of the market through phone users is one thing, but I’ve tried enough mobile games to see that they really do use every single trick in the book to try and entice people to spend as much money as they can, whilst the word “ethical” is but piss in the wind.
I’ve avoided trailers to keep as much of the experience fresh; would you say it feels close to Samus’ Return in presentation rather than say Other M (the last big Metroid game Nintendo pushed)?
My biggest beef with this game was that cheat in Stunt Mode where if you pressed pause just when you were about to hit the water after doing a stunt, you earned a boat load of points at the end as long as you did no more stunts. When I was in birding school, someone brought their N64 and this in and once this cheat was discovered almost everyone did it to get the top score. Made it all real boring to watch.
Overall I was disappointed. I wish Nintendo would stop wasting time on these directs either showing already released trailers for games we already know are coming out, or telling us that info on games will be revealed in a future direct. That’s what press releases are for!
Almost Everything else was for games I don’t have interest in or already know about. Possibly the highlight was the Actraiser remake.
Possibly the most embarrassing thing to admit is that I was excited about was when the final trailer started I thought we were getting some military themed exclusive title; but soon I started to conclude it was likely Bayo 3. Still excited on its release for those who are fans.
Was gonna order the two pads but after a night’s sleep and reading this, likely will just use the Retro-Bit Saturn pad for Mega Drive games and standard Switch controller for N64 games.
Back when the VC was still a thing, people kept on clamouring Nintendo to offer a “Netflix for Games” service for their classic games (possibly an unrealistic romanticised variant where every publisher of history signs up for it). Now that we have it, it’s the other lot clamouring for individual sales. Stuck between a rock and a hard place.
@BanjoPickles I would actually like to see VC sales data from the Wii & Wii U eras. I would bet money that they weren’t that impressive and skewed to the same major titles people bang on about them rereleasing.
Looking forward to mine, already preordered. Sure would have liked a performance boost but the better battery life and better screen are enough for me. I mainly play at home but even then I use it portably a fair amount.
You’d be surprised how much bonus points I get for playing portably in bed next to the wife than scurrying away into the Den to play on the tv. This will mean I don’t have to keep my eye on the battery % so much.
@johnvboy Think it began with “Sliggy” or something. Rumour was he was actually given the boot from the site for repeated criticism of the site’s staff and articles in every comments section.
I felt that the Switch had better chances than the Wii U, although after the doldrums of the previous console it was going to be an uphill struggle that could make or break Ninty as a console maker.
I also remember a certain Wii-U loving Irishman on this very website and his crusade to convince us all the Switch was going to flop big time. Such laughs.
There is some truth to what he says, although I fear the message is being warped into one that states that all classic games must be available on the latest platforms no questions asked. Kind of like the PS4-PS5 free upgrade crowd. For costly titles not available in any cheap form though, I totally agree.
I also agree with the Metroid Fusion example as it seems prices on eBay have shot up crazy (I remember cartridge alone for £15-20). Also 2nd hand Wii U console prices is another barrier to the VC option.
Um. Honestly I’m kinda stumped. I think the concept of level dioramas is good but the scale just seems too small where there is no real detail. I’d rather pay £164 for a single more detailed diorama of Peach’s castle and the grounds.
So many who slag off the OLED Switch conveniently forget that some of us still have the launch model with the older battery that can sometime struggle to hold 3 hrs of play. Now seems a good a time as any to upgrade if we also get a bigger and better screen out of it.
Hope to grab at least the limited variant for the soundtrack CDs. Was tempted by the Super variant because of the original Doujin version on the memory stick, but can’t defend an extra €65. Also if that is the only way to play that version of the game, not impressed.
Then again I am quite the skinflint when it comes to digital only games. I still can’t bring myself to buy the Capcom Arcade Stadium despite the number of games involved.
The Stone Protectors game was never actually released, so I can see some appeal in an official physical release. Not that I’d want it; plus now got an ear worm of the theme song...
Honestly I am torn whether you should have reviewed it as is, to inform potential customers, or wait until the latest fix; leaning more towards reviewing as is, since this is playing into the “fix in post” attitude that has permeated into the industry. If we only review games when they are in the condition they are meant to be, we are normalising bad practices and basically screwing over consumers.
At the very least, once it became apparent that major bugs were present I would have released a PSA to act as a warning to those who may have decided to take the plunge and buy it. Although that’s kind of what this article does, it reads that you first encountered these a few days ago.
As already commented by some, seriously unimpressed with Nintendo Life spoiling Kraid’s appearance in the game. Not everyone is watching the trailers; I myself haven’t watched any since the E3 reveal as I felt I could wait till Oct and go in blank.
Honestly wondering if I should just avoid the site until release now if every little thing on every trailer is going to be plastered in the article title.
Probably will continue Bravely Default II, although after some soundtrack listens during work I have a desire to start up Skies of Arcadia or Final Fantasy VII Remake. However starting a new JRPG when one is unfinished; Es No Bueno...
@sketchturner I’m in the same boat. Stories are a big thing for me in games and in my experience creating your own character has always been detrimental to the story as they need to take into account various possibilities and outcomes; plus makes conversations with NPCs feel stilted.
I prefer to experience a story rather than create one. That’s why I read books, not write them.
Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles (UK-based here) and Gradius were my first 2 NES games I got with my console back in the early 90s. Amassed quite a collection back then with personal faves includes Super Mario Bros 2, Zelda, Chip n Dale, Captain Skyhawk and more. My biggest surprises are the fact I never owned SMB or SMB3 but the time I was old enough to choose my own games, the SNES had made its way into my life.
Finally managed to order it at RRP. This was the 3rd set I ordered after Amazon.de and GAME; both of which were more expensive. Cancelled the AMZ order, GAME order likely closer to release just in case.
I only really had Streetpass success during Conventions and it always reminded me of how annoying the 10-person limit was. Had always hoped they’d boost it to 25 or 50.
I completed most of the puzzles but once they started to lock certain pieces behind street pass it became more annoying as it was now purely on luck of which you had little control. At least the coin farming gave you the chance to fill missing pieces.
Honestly don’t miss it too much on the Switch; plus it’s larger size makes me less likely to Chuck it into my bag for a few hits.
I suggest the next article be an in depth explanation of 3rd party ownership and licensing, with the challenges involved in getting such games on a service like NSO.
Yeah, cos when say a company announces a new type of tyre design that boosts fuel efficiency they base it on its success on aircraft landing gear before offering it to car manufacturers 🙄.
Will defo buy these if released on Switch but I ain’t buying them on PC or Phone to make that a possibility. I don’t buy a toaster I don’t need in the hope the company then releases a coffee machine.
Despite not one for depressingly set post-apocalyptic stories, I wouldn’t have minded this for a Zelda game. Technically Breath of the Wild is post-apocalyptic but only feels that way in Hyrule Castle Town.
That and a Zelda game in a Sci-fi setting. Anyone for the Master Sword being converted into pure energy and stored in a beam sabre? All while travelling on the HSS Epona?
I’m not even a sports or sports game fans so all this is about as important to me as being told they’re changing the scent of the hand soap in toilets down at the pub.
Nonetheless, I acknowledge the franchise’s popularity and you have to accept the capability gaps between the Switch and the XBS/X. At least 2K pushed it as far as they could to somewhat align with the PS4 & XB1 titles.
This does however make me harken back to the days when many developers and publishers developed sports games for different platforms; carving out their little niches. My cousins were sports crazy so played my fair amount of titles on the SNES & Megadrive.
Being a physical collector first and foremost, the Steam Deck is of little interest to me. In fact my Switch collection (physical+digital) outnumbers my Steam collection back from when I dabbled in PC gaming years ago so the Switch OLED upgrade made more sense as I play almost 50:50 docked and portable.

I know I have Zero Mission, Super Metroid and the Prime Trilogy on my Wii U; not sure if I bought Fusion. Still I better check as it’s been a while since I worked on buying through my Wii U VC wishlist.
Also got to look into replaying Samus Returns on the 3DS.

Re: Review: FIFA 22 - Another Match Abandoned
At the end of the day, as long as EA succeeds in conning people out of their money year after year, they’re gonna keep pulling this.
I think you put more effort into writing this review than EA did making this game.
