Re: Editorial: Nintendo's Approach to amiibo is Increasingly Frustrating

Kid_A

Just to be clear, this is an article by an adult about TOYS, right? Toys? There are legitimate problems in the world but we have rich white people writing articles about how they can't find the toys they want? Cool. Just checking.
I mean, I get it. I like amiibo. But the idea of anybody over the age of 6 becoming upset by not being able to find the toy they want is legitimately sad.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Franchises We Want to See at E3 - Metroid

Kid_A

The storytelling was obviously a mess in Other M, but man would it be a shame for them to completely scrap the gameplay there. Team Ninja had the ingredients of greatness; they just needed someone to remind them that Metroid was built on minimalism and storytelling through discovery and ambience.

I don't think Nintendo has given up on Metroid by a long shot; they just want to make sure the right idea comes along, and that they get the right team to pull it off. I mean, it's crazy to think about, but Other M is the only one of Nintendo's Big Three (Mario, Metroid and Zelda) to get anything resembling mixed reception. Every major entry in those franchises (not counting spin-offs) have been hailed, at least upon release, as brilliant. It was a wake up call for them.

Re: Warren Spector Reminisces About the Development of the Epic Mickey Series

Kid_A

It's been ages since I've played it, but I adored Epic Mickey. It felt like a Rare platformer with a genius gameplay hook that was super satisfying, and the art direction/character animations really did live up to the hype. Growing up with N64 platformers, juggling a finicky camera is natural to me so I'm not the best judge of whether it worked or not. It worked for me. There were a lot of little decisions that bugged me, but over all I thought it was a wonderful game that received WAY too much hype for the sort of game it was trying to be. Never played the sequel, though I was always interested in checking it out.

Re: Poll: Do Video Game Reviews Need To Have A Score?

Kid_A

Not to get too inside baseball, but one of the main reason I stopped reviewing games here is because I disagreed with the way games were being reviewed. I've always been a proponent of words, not numbers. I think a lot of time the scoring system is an excuse for bad writing. Nintendo Life has good writers, but I think they would be better if they had to challenge themselves to explain their perspective without the help of a grading system.

Re: Review: Tomodachi Life (3DS)

Kid_A

The fact that there is still so much debate as to what a game "is" is proof that a numerical system for reviewing games is a terrible idea.

Re: Review: LEGO The Hobbit (Wii U)

Kid_A

Wait...what? This felt like a high point in the series to me, despite some ocassional bugs. Better puzzle design, better use of its large cast of characters, excellent open world, and charming as heck. Admittedly I do love the Hobbit films, but I've been playing this a lot with friends and we all seem to agree that's the best Lego game, Lego City aside.

Re: Review: Kirby & The Amazing Mirror (Wii U eShop / Game Boy Advance)

Kid_A

I could never quite get into this one, but I know it has a following. Kirby, for being so cute and "safe," probably has the most divisive games of any of Nintendo's franchises. Kirby Air Ride, Epic Yarn and 64 are all either the worst or best games ever depending who you ask.
I probably need to give Mirror another shot, is what I'm saying.

Re: Review: Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (Wii U eShop)

Kid_A

10/10 game for me. One of the finest RPGs of all time, and one of the few truly great comedies in gaming.

Also, I was skeptical about how these games would look on Wii U. Turns out it was needless. The game looks fantastic, as good as any SNES game. The only thing that suffers is the sound. Great music, but it sounds a little tinny.

Re: Nintendo Download: 3rd April (North America)

Kid_A

I'll be picking up Mario & Luigi for sure, and probably Metroid Fusion just to be able to play it on the big screen.

I actually really dug the Batman Blackgate 3DS game from what I played of it so I may pick up the HD remake.

Re: Review: Yoshi's New Island (3DS)

Kid_A

I played through the first world of the game. So far, I'd say a 5 is pretty harsh. Like Yoshi's Story, it's a game clearly geared toward young gamers, but I don't know how you couldn't have your pants charmed off by the visuals, music and story (simple as it is). The level design is about as standard as it gets so far, but it's perfectly enjoyable so far.

THOSE VISUALS THOUGH. The screenshots make them look horrible, but they look stunning on the 3DS screen. You can see the brushstrokes on the trees and clouds, the crosshatched pastels on the Yoshis. The game looks amazing.

Re: Review: Super Mario Bros. Deluxe (3DS eShop)

Kid_A

This isn't out in the US yet, so I'm glad I read this before I plopped down more cash on SMB. I must have had nostalgia clouding my memory. I remembered this being perhaps the definitive version of the game. Totally did not remember it having the zoomed-in screen! Obviously that would be a huge problem. It's a shame that the All Stars version's physics differ from the NES original, otherwise it would be the best version of the game.

Re: Video: What Could Super Mario Galaxy Look Like In HD?

Kid_A

I'd like to see TP over SS for an HD remake. SS looks gorgeous as is--I only want a remake of that one if they use the extra power of the Wii U to fix other stuff. For example, being able to seamlessly skydive into/out of Skyloft without initiating a loading scene.

Re: Soapbox: A Case For The Defence: Castlevania 64

Kid_A

Great idea for a feature! This game is seeing a real resurgence these days in the speed running community.

I'd request a similar article on Sonic Lost World, which I think is easily the best 3D Sonic ever and the best platformer on Wii U that isn't 3D Land. Bizarrely dismissed game.

Also: Yoshi Story, which is the most charming game ever and screw anyone who disagrees.

Re: Satoru Iwata States That Nintendo Should "Abandon Old Assumptions" About Its Businesses

Kid_A

Nintendo HAS to know they'd make a fortune putting games on iOS devices. I know nothing about business, but I genuinely don't see how putting out, for example, a $0.99 Mario runner on iPhone wouldn't make them millions of dollars and increase Wii U/3DS interest and customer awareness by a billion percent. Even a port of NES Remix to iPhone would cause an absolute explosion of Nintendo interest. All iPhone games have advertisements. If they put a game on iPhone and pumped it with a few ads for Wii U...I just don't see the downside.

Re: Review: Monster High: 13 Wishes (Wii U)

Kid_A

This is one of my favorite "bad game" reviews I think I've read. Hilarious, but painfully detailed. It's easy to crap on a bad game--it's trickier to really EXPLAIN why a game is bad in an articulate, thorough and entertaining way.

Re: Review: Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate (3DS)

Kid_A

I actually thought this game was pretty darn solid. It doesn't have the quality to recommend to players who aren't already Bat-fans (unlike the console Arkham games, which I think anyone could enjoy) but if you're a fan of Batman, the story/acting and gameplay is definitely worth a look.

Re: Review: Batman: Arkham Origins (Wii U)

Kid_A

Huh. It's funny how mixed the reaction is. I think this is probably my favorite Arkham game yet. The emotional center of it is much stronger, and the Joker story is one of the more psychologically fascinating I've experienced. I'm a big Bat fan, but I thought despite a weak opening act, it ended up being a fantastic experience, with a notably more cohesive narrative that City's mess.

Re: Performance of Batman: Arkham Origins Wii U Version Compares Unfavourably to 360 and PS3

Kid_A

I never had any issues with the frame rate when the game first launched, but for whatever reason I've had a heck of a time with it this week. Just in the past couple hours it has frozen on me twice. I wonder what gives? There must have been an update I wasn't aware of.

UPDATE:
Try turning off "camera assist" and "miiverse auto posting" from the Game Options menu. I tried it as an experiment and it seems to run a lot smoother for me now.

Re: Review: Ikachan (3DS eShop)

Kid_A

Oh, Phil. How I disagree with this score.
This game is more about the unique atmosphere and children's-book-charm than anything else. It isn't supposed to be challenging. At the very least, I think it's a showcase of Pixel's ability to craft games of a look and feel completely his own.

This is coming from my experience with the game as a free PC download, though. As far as I can remember, it can be beaten in a couple hours. I'll concede it doesn't lend itself to a paid release.

Re: Talking Point: The Emergence of Download-Only Retail Games

Kid_A

I definitely would say the eShop versions of retail games should be slightly cheaper, at the very least the N64 Remakes or older titles like Steel Diver. There should be competetive pricing. I can get Star Fax 643D for $20 at my local store; there's no reason why I should pay twice the price for a downloadable version.
