@ThanosReXXX Good list. I was going to say I could probably name a dozen good non-rare games but couldn't think of them. Most of those games in your list were decent, some of them I wouldn't bother with today but liked back in the day (Wrestling games and such). But yeah I could pick 20 from that list no problem.
@ShadJV By that logic eventually Nintendo's current system of the time will be released as a classic the same year Maybe one day the classic will come first
@AcidFox They could easily enhance them but I agree. I forgot about the issues with licensing. Without the RARE games there isn't a lot to offer. Before I sold my N64 I had basically every RARE game and maybe 3 others.
@NESlover85 I agree that the 2D games age much much better but if they upscale the N64 to a decent resolution it will improve the situation a HUGE amount. 1440×1080 would be ideal but even 640x480 is a drastic improvement over 320x240 for N64 games.
I remember the advertisement in Electronic Gaming Magazine back in the day. Always confused me, never wanted to play it but I like the weirdness of it. Definitely not a great shooter though, there are far better ones on the SNES alone. Since the SNES though pretty much all US boxart has been bad. The border ruins them all. Most of the import Super Famicom boxes look like a standalone work of art and I like that many of them use the verticle orientation.
This doesn't surprise me, this happens in a lot of places. The older generation are trying to hang onto their leadership positions in society but the world has moved on. Our generation knows where we want to go but constantly hit road blocks trying to get there. I'm tired of rules imposed on me by previous generations. Nintendo are still awesome but they need a real leader who knows and understand great talent. Japan can do what they like but not evolving or being worried about your pride just means stepping down a rung on the list of superpowers. I feel the same way about my own country.
I actually played it a bit a number of years after it came out and found it to be surprisingly decent. Goldeneye is a bit more plain but it has better mechanics and was a tighter game.
Most Ubisoft games these days are $60 and have the same amount of depth as Flappy Bird with shinier graphics.
It sucks to see the eshop cluttered with garbage but there really is no avoiding it. The crap will sink to the bottom just like it does on the app store. If people buy the game and like it that's great if they don't then post up some reviews telling people to stay away.
1) Hold second system firmly in hand 2) Toss said system out window 3) Use time wasted gaming on second system for developing real life skills. 4) Profit!
At $1 - $1.50 you'd have some people trying to buy all the VC games they can. GOTTA CATCH EM ALL. I wonder if Nintendo was ever worried about cannabalizing sales of new games? The historic gaming catalog is big enough now you pretty much never HAVE to buy a new game and can still be playing new (to you) old games for the rest of your life.
Visually it looks great except that the buttons are not at all centered on the face. Maybe it was an engineering constraint but the buttons should have an equal border between the three sides and equal or greater between them and the start button.
I agree about the immaturity but there are a lot of immature people out there eating it up. There are lots of guys in their 30s that gobble this crap up...
Realistic worlds isn't a bad thing though. I like a bit of reality in my gaming though some imagination doesn't hurt.
That's a totally reasonable statement. They have great even legendary IP's with a strong history. They have been way too safe with some of them (cough cough Zelda). Nintendo is great at creating innovative gameplay, we see it all the time with Mario. Even in Zelda there are some innovative elements but they are sort of hacked into what has become a paint by numbers sort of game. Really few if any of the Zelda games are subpar but there is sort of a missed opportunity with every release and tying the game to a formula really limits where the game can go. Predictability is probably gaming's biggest downfall for me. Look at anything Ubisoft is cranking out and it defines what I hate about the gaming industry today.
Yeah I can't stand it when a game doesn't just let you play. Sometimes the game is good enough it's worth it but often I can't be bothered because I'd rather just play something else. By all means notify of things I might need to know but just log them all in a journal I can check on my own time, don't stop the gameplay because you wanted to tell me something.
Also who cares about batteries? Let kids find out the hard way that they should have charged up.
@aaronsullivan That's kind of what an open world is though. If all the characters are important and all the areas are important the game is no longer open. The beauty of an open world (which some don't like) is that it feels less like a game in that not everything is programmed to do your bidding.
I think we've started to see more really tough games even though the AAA titles have been getting progressively easier. I can't stand the easy games, I feel like there's little point to play them. The stories usually suck so I don't play them for that. Super Meat Boy was the first really challenging game I played in a while and I loved it. Super Mario Galaxy 2 was also challenging but it was accessible at the same time. Monster Hunter Tri took a lot of time investment to get good at. I like when games balance enough that you can still have fun playing (by doing other missions) but can constantly challenge yourself. The Witcher 2 on PC is damn tough. The short missions aren't bad but the boss fights require a lot of replay until you get your technique just right.
Watch Dogs is most anticipated game because of the Ubisoft marketing hype machine. There are some actual honest reviews out there and I can tell it isn't for me. Ubisoft Montreal hasn't made a game I've liked except maybe a couple of the early Splinter Cell games. All their latest games have a tiny bit of original game play that they repeat for hours on end. Mario Kart 8 I'm sure is the better game.
Minecraft is all about imagination and construction. Mojang have strayed from that by adding crap RPG-like game mechanics. Being coded in Java was completely idiotic because it's totally limited what developers they can hire and it completely limits the engine technology.
For some people it sucks but if you like design & architecture even despite the limitations it's the best game in the world. There is SO much more possible that will hopefully materialize in a ground up sequel or from another developer. I still play occasionally but my playtime has greatly decreased since I started 3.5 years ago
Ok here's the problem with their so called "Ethnic Diversity" complaints. Remember how we are all told everyone is the same on the inside? And Skin colour is the only differentiating factor? If that's the case WHY do we need to show diversity. While you could get technical and there are genetic differences between "Races" there is literally no difference between a white character and a black character unless you assign stereotypical traits. People are far too STUCK on skin colour and it's holding everyone back. There are many cultures of white skinned individuals and many of them are quite different from each other. I'm not saying kids don't still need these roll models but when looking at the bigger picture kids should be able to have roll models of any colour because they are worthy roll models not because their skin colour matches. It's these adults that are perpetuating racist stereotypes.
I liked how the SNES F-Zero had 4 cars all with a back story. The later entries in the franchise added a bunch more forgettable vehicles with forgettable characters. As much as I hate the modern Codemasters Racing games with forced storlines and cutscenes I think for F-Zero a story works. I'd like to see a focused story as long as it doesn't interfere with the racing. Maybe just at the beginning and end of a cup.
Capcom should make the next RE game a little more like Dead Rising. Remove the comedy from it, remove the timer, make it less about sheer number of Zombies and more creepy/scary. Keep a similar game engine & control scheme but put the focus more on guns than melee.
The arcade ones kind of suck anyway. They are interesting and it's fun to be able to play as Pacman or Blinky but the constant announcer is annoying, and the gameplay is very dumbed down. The tracks are also a bit repetitive in style. They just don't have enough similarities with console Mario Kart.
This is what I didn't understand when I heard the specs of the Wii-U. THEY COULD HAVE DONE THIS EASILY. They could have setup the system to render all Wii games in 1080p but they chose not to. They would have had to use more powerful but compatible original Wii hardware but it could have been done. They could have even supplied texture upgrades in downloadable form. Instead they invest years into making HD updates rather than have the hardware do the work for them...The resolution alone is what most people want, the extra stuff is an added bonus but 1080p is more than half the battle and way more than acceptable for most.
The sad part is at this point Sonic has been a crap game longer than it was a good game much like Metallica has been a crappy band for longer than it was a good one (for anyone that actually liked them). It makes you wonder if the early years weren't just experimentation and all the games now are the true vision of what Sonic was meant to be.
Oh and if you don't want this to happen, don't put guys in suits in charge of figuring out if a game is good or not. Blackberry has the same issue, they let guys in suits run the company. Business men have no clue when it comes to design, they are good at doing business. When you are running a company and approving projects though it means you approve crap and become really good at selling it.
Some people seem to forget you can't survive on making crap. Just because you made a video game featuring well known characters and you yourself are a well known company doesn't mean you can just pat yourself on the back. When you have a bunch of non-gamers pushing for products for gamers their judgement is completely skewed. How can someone who has no idea what a good game plays like decide their game is good enough to sell? So many huge companies are so detached from what they sell and what their customers want. You might as well put ties on all your game boxes so we know their all business.
I love all your articles about gaming history. All this info that none of us knew at the time is such a great revelation today.

Funny but what I find even better is having a shelf dedicated to NES games and Whisky (preferably Scotch). I'm seriously going to do that, the flasks are kind of ridiculous but the rustic shelf with NES games and Whisky, 10/10!
There's still the problem that people KNOW the only reason to own a Nintendo system is for the Nintendo developed games which end up being few over the course of a consoles life. There are always other cool games but the system sellers are the Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart, possibly Metroid type games which don't add up to a lot and pretty much require any heavy gamers to own multiple systems. The portable market is different but the home console market has not been well enough backed by third parties since the SNES. The N64 would have been an immense flop (for me at least) without RARE.
I still think Nintendo needs to aquire more dev studios especially outside of Japan. Europe is a safe bet for great talent or look into emerging markets like India for talent. I'd love to see the incredible games India would come up with once they have some established development teams.
