Remember that GoldenEye 007 re-release we mentioned a while back? Well, it seems like we could be finding out more about it officially in the next couple of weeks.
That's according to VentureBeat's Jeff Grubb, who said:
I think that Microsoft is going to be the one to announce that first. I think this game is probably coming pretty soon, I'm thinking next couple of weeks.
Grubb's comment echoes what was said by VGC editor and former Playtonic staffer Andy Robinson recently.
We first got a hint that something could be happening with the legendary N64 FPS back in October last year when one of Nintendo Europe's partners successfully managed to un-ban the game in Germany, which led many to speculate that a re-release was on the cards.
Then, the publication of Xbox achievements relating to the game confirmed that it was coming to Microsoft's console at some point. This has led to more speculation that we could see GoldenEye 007 come to Nintendo Switch Online, or as a stand-alone digital release on Switch.
Rare previously remastered the game for the Xbox 360, but it was never released. The beta leaked out onto the web and is playable via emulation or using a modded console.

Dont think so, if it was going to be on switch, they would of announced it on Microsoft last week and then full announcement during the Direct.
Probably should tag this one under Rumour as there is no reputable information besides someone who doesn't work at Nintendo or Microsoft (and still believes the Switch Pro will be happening).
And you're helping spoil the surprise
@Bunkerneath
I think you are forgetting the fact that Microsoft owns the game now, so it's their call on how/when to announce it.
The fact Nintendo was looking to get the game cleared for release in Germany a few months ago, and Banjo appeared on Switch recently, it's not hard to believe this.
I have been wanting a 007 game on the switch for a long time. I would buy this as a standalone title, not with Nintendo Switch Online
I would be happy if a remaster of the N64 classic was released for Switch, but, to be honest, I would be just as stoked, if not more, if they ported the 2010 version.
I'd be on board with the remaster.
The Series S/X is looking better and better as a temporary investment if paired with Game Pass.
As long as it really is a Goldeneye game this time and not about a bloke who has a Goldeneye and kills James Bond lmao (Rogue Agent) I'll be very happy.
I hope we get the Remastered version of the game too, I would much prefer that over the original version.
@mojen i Feel the same, not gonna waste any money on game rental, so I hope this gets a physical or at least a digital update. Since the game leaked with Achievements it might actually be a remake- which means we could buy this game! Super hyped now!
Nintendo may get an NSO version whereas Microsoft may get a remastered port of the Wii game.
@Specter_of-the_OLED More like getting that cancelled 360 remaster, but upscaled to 4K instead of the original remaster's 720p resolution. Hopefully we get the game via NSO. The Wii remake has almost nothing to do with the original GoldenEye so why even bother with that one?
@Flashlink99 Cause it's more easier to port as it's already in HD. Still I hope I'm wrong, usually when they do these port project they tend to choose the easier ported version. Example like the Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection, they did not choose the superior Xbox and Wii U versions, all versions on the collection were the inferior PS3 ports. Same with Mega Man Anniversary Collection on PS2 and GameCube, instead of choosing the superior Sega Saturn version of Mega Man 8, they choose the inferior PS1 version not cause it's inferior but because it's easier to port.
@Specter_of-the_OLED
If they were gonna port the remake, they would've done it a long time ago. The difference with the remake is that it's not stuck in licensing hell. The original is most definitely considering Nintendo funded the project.
Was this on the Nvidia leak?
What informed VentureBeat's Jeff Grubb on this prediction?
'News'?
@Specter_of-the_OLED You certainly have a point there and I mostly agree. I hope that they won't pull a fart and give us GoldenEye ft. Daniel Craig. Might as well re-release 007 Legends
I would love to be able to play goldeneye with online multiplayer. I don’t care if it’s HD or not. Just give us the good stuff haha.
@XenoShaun Achievements exist, which is a pretty good sign it's coming.
Interesting if true, I wonder if Nintendo and Microsoft negotiated a deal to release their respective versions? Nintendo can have the original port to add to the NSO and Microsoft can release the 2010 version? I would love to play both myself.
@Darknilious I think that could well be a likely scenario.
@Damo Yes for Xbox. Everything in regards to the Switch is speculative.
I honestly would love a remaster but the quirks of the original are what I would be looking forward to. Especially laughing at the enemies that take a flurry of bullets and don't die until they have fully completed their battle roll
@XenoShaun I don't think we're suggesting otherwise? Even if this were 100% for Xbox, we'd still have reported on it, as it's based on the N64 original. Still relevant to Nintendo fans.
However, the fact that Nintendo moved to have the game un-banned in Germany speaks volumes. Why do that if it only benefits one of your rivals?
@XenoShaun
Nintendo held up the original Xbox 360 HD release.
It's painfully obvious Nintendo and Microsoft are working together on this now to get it released on both systems.
I hope Nintendo doesn't put the game in the Nintendo switch online instead we get a port of the xbox remaster with crossplay in the eshop.
@KillerBOB That is just a rumor, it's not confirmed that Nintendo wasn involved in the cancelation of the remaster.
@fenlix
Absolutely Nintendo helped prevent it from releasing on 360. Then when it leaked and was huge news, both companies realized they were sitting on a lot of $$$ so they decided to work together to get it released. Microsoft gave Nintendo Banjo to help sweeten their shoddy online service in exchange for Nintendo allowing both companies to share Goldeneye.
The general consensus seems to be that this is real and it will be the original rom onto NSO for Switch, and the unreleased remake of the original for Xbox.
No idea why anyone is bringing up Wii Goldeneye. That is entirely unrelated - and it was a devastatingly bad disappointment of a game to boot.
The next NSO announcement is very likely to be imminent based on previous announcements. Majora's Mask is "February" and the next game is likely announced at the same time as per Paper Mario, Banjo Kazooie and Majora's announcements.
The thing that is perhaps strange in all of this is that Nintendo have only released games we knew about for N64 NSO. Its nice to have surprises, obviously, but it's unusual behaviour on their part.
Perhaps we will get a surprise every few releases going forward?
Perhaps we'll get a RARE title every other month...?
Perhaps Banjo was always intended as a surprise but they decided to include it in the original announcement to build further hype / help cushion the blow on the cost?
Who knows - it's Nintendo and their unpredictable release slate.
That said, Goldeneye is coming. Announcement is in the next 13 days, and it'll be released within 30 days.
@nocdaes @KillerBOB fans consensus*
There is no leaks about in which platforms the game would be release.
@KillerBOB I think Nintendo's publisher rights on the n64 game expired some years ago...
There should be a 007 All Stars release or something. Some other Bond games released during the N64-GC era were great.
*pats The World Is Not Enough on the head — yes even you.
@nocdaes
I'm sure there will be cross-play between both versions, with one on NSO and the other on Gamepass. So that would likely mean both versions have to be the same. Plus the leaked Xbox achievements show the original games graphics/models in HD, not the 360 remastered version. I'm thinking Nintendo wants both versions to be identical (the N64 original in 1080p), with both only available through each companies online service.
@fenlix
But they paid for it's creation and I'm sure did all the legwork in securing the film licenses required. No doubt they blocked its release on the 360 because they weren't going to benefit from it at all.
This time both consoles get the same N64 version, both exclusive to their online services, so $$$ all around.
@Browny It is. I love GamePass on my Series X and PC. I wish I could take it to go on my Switch but alas. Steam Deck isn’t quite my thing considering the size, price, and lack of availability. Mostly the size.
@KillerBOB As far as I know Nintendo also paid for the creation of Banjo and they doesn't own it XD Also, I doubt they could or would try to secure the rights of a third party temporal license.
Also, they wouldn't get the same version if the game was going to be release on Nintendo switch online, it would be a rom being emulated while the xbox one would be a remaster with better texture and aspect ratio. I doubt you could have crossplay between an emulator and a native port.
@fenlix
Banjo was a character designed and created by Rare, James Bond is a separate IP which had to be paid for to be licensed by Nintendo XD. Nintendo wasn't going to let Microsoft profit from their investment without them getting in on the action.
Also you just inadvertently agreed with my opinion in your second paragraph. For there to be cross-play between both consoles' online services (which there will undoubtedly be), both versions need to be the same. That's why the Xbox achievement leak images show the OG game, not the 360 remaster. Nintendo wouldn't let Xbox release a superior version of the game on their console. They will want them both identical.
When the games are announced in a couple weeks, be sure to come back and apologize to me!
@fenlix the Xbox Live leak shows Xbox is getting the game. The German ban lifting request by Nintendo shows Nintendo will also release it. Trust me, I am the biggest skeptic on all things Goldeneye, but this is definitely happening. There is no doubt in my mind.
@KillerBOB I'd be very surprised if Microsoft accepted both Xbox and Switch having the original, with cross-play when a remastered Xbox 360 game is literally sat ready to rock and roll.
I know Microsoft and Nintendo have been chumming up a lot recently (Banjo Smash, Banjo NSO, Cup head, Ori, Minecraft et al.) but I do not see any scenario other than Microsoft telling Nintendo where to go if that's how Nintendo tried to play it out.
The achievements are a bit of a mystery though- you raise a good point. Perhaps Xbox will have both versions... or the achievements are simply a nod to the original, but are actually tied to the Xbox 360 version?
Not long until we find out.
@nocdaes
But Nintendo has been the one holding things up evidently, so if they don't sign off, Microsoft won't be releasing any version of Goldeneye. They seem to be the ones holding the keys to make this happen.
It will probably be the original game/style of graphics, but with improved draw distance and some minor tweaks like that. 1080p and increased/stable framerate but no new textures.
Unless it's put on NSO but made available in a different category, and not sorted with the OG N64 releases, then maybe it will be a port of that 360 remaster.
Either way, I can't wait to play this online!
@Fairburne I still think the images used with the achievements are largely inconclusive as to whether it's the original game or the remastered version for Xbox 360, but they are definitely taken from the original game.
Also, some of the image choices are strange. The last three on the list for example. Slappers only multiplayer achievement has the Tank from Streets as the image... Odd choice. The one above looks like the plane crash from Jungle perhaps? Also odd.
I could think of approximately 10,934 better names for the Oddjob in Multiplayer achievement too...
Can't see this happening
@KillerBOB There's definitely something unusual in the rights/ownership of this game. Further complicated by the IP rights. I'm pretty confident that Nintendo did indeed put the brakes on the remaster, but I also do not believe Nintendo can release this game without Microsoft consent likely due in part to the Rare ownership.
One thing that springs to mind is the Multiplayer aspect of the game that the development team put in at the very last minute. I wonder whether there's a Rare claim on that part potentially?
Another theory is that the IP rights never included any reference to digital games. We are talking 25 years ago... and the Bond license is complicated. I cannot see the film bosses giving any time to any discussion around a 25 year old videogame, much less actually allow it to be sold again digitally - especially during the Daniel Craig era which has been all about NEW Bond and moving away from the old Bond. (Debateable as to whether Goldeneye constitutes old Bond of course, many see it as the start of the change, but still the point remains). No way Goldeneye gets re-released without Digital given how big the digital market is now.
@Bunkerneath would have
Please let us get the HD ressys for the Switch edition!!!!!!!!
PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Literally no facts or proof/evidence, just a bunch of "I think" statements from good old jeff. Was it really worth making a whole article out of a guy who predicts and throws everything at the wall waiting to see what sticks?
Was able to snatch up the remastered xbox version a few months back on pc... It looks and plays great with the buttons mapped smartly and being able to swap between old and new graphics by pressing s button( like halo remastered)...really should of been released that years ago.. the only thing holding it back now is damn the gameplay hasn't aged well... Its stupidly easy to run and gun with no regard for actually aiming as shots in the foot can be one hit kills .. the switch version should have multiplayer or else it would be pointless to re-release...
Sees “rumor”
No, no, no! No more foreplay! 🤨 🔫
@echoplex my favorite was 007 Nightfire on the Gamecube - BOY that was a game right there
@WaveBoy I’m curious if you played Dusk - I didn’t have any issues with it (I loved it actually) but I know multiple people who felt motion sickness with N64 Graphics at 60 FPS
I hope we get a rerelease/remaster that touches up the controls and runs at 60fps.
If I'm given the choice of making a permanent purchase of an actual remaster of GoldenEye 007 or an emulated version of the original locked behind a (grossly overpriced) subscription, I'm going with the former, full stop. If that means having to buy it on XBox then so be it. Nintendo is leaving a LOT of money on the table by not offering their legacy catalog for actual sale tied to user accounts, but then they've always been more than a little greedy on that front on multiple levels (asking price, tying purchases to a single console on the VC).
One day a lot of folks are going to realize these subscription models aren't as convenient as advertised...probably about the time their subscription runs out and they realize they have to re-up for another $50 US to regain access to games, saves...and let's not forget, those "free" season passes for games like MK8 Deluxe (whose cost for permanent purchase is incidentally half that of a single year's SO+Expansion sub).
Do people really believe this nonsense? I would rather have a perfect dark remaster instead tbh
@Bunkerneath Why? Nintendo announces stuff outside of Directs all the time. Don't make up rules that don't exist.
I'm hoping it comes out! It would be Incredible to play on my Xbox Series S and on my Nintendo Switch OLED with the Nintendo 64 Controller via Nintendo Switch Online! 😊👍
A few things already pointed out by others...
1. The reimagining that first released on Wii has nothing to do with this game but the title.
2. Nintendo no longer holds the publishing rights for this game.
3. Microsoft owns the game (not the IP, obviously).
4. The achievements icons are N64 screenshots but that doesn't mean that Xbox is getting the N64 version. It could be just a nostalgic nod.
5. The Xbox 360 remaster was almost finished and was leaked last year. It makes a lot of sense to release it officially.
6. The people involved in the Xbox 360 remaster believe that Nintendo stopped the game when they still held the publishing rights. This was published on many sites including Nintendo Life.
7. Jeff is not the insider he claims to be, he's just echoing what everybody else knows: leaked remaster and ban removal inquiry in Germany last year, leaked achievements in January, achievements unlocked by Rare staff in February...
My prediction is that Xbox gets the Xbox 360 remaster and, if they want, Nintendo gets the N64 version, just like Banjo-Kazooie. Another possibility is that Nintendo gets the remaster as a new game and not on Nintendo Online. I think that the latter is less likely.
@huyi Honestly, the amount of times I see "I'd rather a Perfect Dark remaster". Perfect Dark is on the Xbox right now. Go play it all you want...!
Meanwhile, Goldeneye has not been available for 25 years. Until now...
@Troll_Decimator You're right, and all the N64 NSO announcements, to date, have been outside of a Direct (apart from the very first one obviously!).
But, that said, it is more than a little strange - in my mind, as a huge Goldeneye fan! - that part of the Direct is for Earthbound on the NES and SNES NSO, while N64 remains silent. Stranger still when Goldeneye is the next game, appearing for the first time in 25 years.
I guess we just chalk that one down to the fact NES and SNES have been dormant since last July, right? Meanwhile N64 news has been every month, so far.
Please, please, pleeeeeeease make this be true. I own two original copies of this on the N64, and play a full playthrough at least once a year. Having this on Switch would be a dream come true.
@GannonBanned Yes! I was thinking about that one actually. From Russia With Love wasn’t too bad either.
@nocdaes some of us might love Perfect Dark and not have an Xbox
@Shredderlovespizza There's undoubtedly some nostalgia at play with Goldeneye... but for me, the 4 player multiplayer is as iconic and pick-up-and-play as other timeless classics, such as Doom and Quake.
The idea of the multiplayer being online... it's still to this day one of the greatest deathmatch experiences you can have. Excellent range of weapons, good mix of levels, iconic characters, atmospheric music, nice selection of modes. The single player is also rich and diverse thanks to the multiple difficulty levels, bonus objectives and of course those unlockable cheats.
It's the 3rd best selling N64 game - yes it was bundled with the console - and hasn't been released for 25 years. Definitely not for everyone, but if its going onto NSO and you have the subscription already... enjoy it!
