The Switch could really use with a new kart game, and luckily in March, Chocobo GP will be racing onto the hybrid system.
This new racer includes a story mode, 64-player knock-out tournament, time attack and various other modes. Square Enix is also releasing a free-to-download version - allowing players who don't own the game to join in on the fun.
In the lead-up to Chocobo GP, Square Enix's Japanese Twitter account for the game has shared clips of the playable racers. New characters can be unlocked by winning racers and completing missions in the game's story mode. Here's a look at the line-up so far:
Square Enix has also revealed a free Chocobo GP spin-off app for mobile devices, which you can download now on Android and iOS:
Woah, that's a lot to choose from! Keep an eye out for more character updates in the near future.

So adorable. I really want this game. All my repressed kart urges from never buying mario kart 8 are coming out.
I'm still hoping Sephiroth makes an appearance.
Why only FF IX characters? I want Chibi-Sephiroth to run over chibi-Aerith using his sword-shaped vehicle.
The game looks fun and I’m excited for it. I’ve been checking to see if it’s available for preorder and I haven’t seen it yet.
This'll tide me over until a new Mario Kart. Looks fun!
@Erigen It's not only FFIX characters. Terra from FFVI is confirmed, and while he's been in multiple entries, Gilgamesh has a stage tying into his original game, FFV. There could be secret characters from other main series entries as well.
The roster’s a bit flat to be honest. Not exactly very interesting given how rich FF’s history is. Hoping there’s secret characters.
The Chocobo is still the cutest character in the roster.
I'm getting more excited for it. Is it digital only?
Free to download version? Wonder how that is going to work.
Looks cool though, plus it has Vivi.
it took so long for me to scroll down here just to get to the comment section.
Anyway, it is looking good. Will wait for reviews
@UglyCasanova its a Lite version. Kinda like a demo I think
I will wait for a review from here first, but Im kind of sick of MK8 and Im a big fan of FF games. I may have to actually get this. Also they need a Cactaur racer.
@nessisonett While I'd like to see more main series characters join the roster, I do think it's worth noting this game seems to be drawing more from the Chocobo spin-off games rather than the series as a whole. Steiner, Vivi, Terra, and Gilgamesh all fit with the style really well, but I think the intention is mainly to tie into the other Chocobo games. I'd absolutely love to see characters like Cecil, Rydia, Celes, and Cloud join in, though.
I love the fact Steiner is just there, not even redesigned in any way or chibified, he just looks like he always did.
@Eel Steiner for president! Such a great character
Where’s King Bomb?
Ifrit, Ramuh and Shiva as racers? Sounds... Like they have to stretch a lot. Also, I am seeing a bunch of FF9 characters, but where is some older game rep?
This game will be fun. I hope there's a Tonberry racer!
This, Triangle Strategy and Kirby being out in the month of my 2 older kids' birthdays is just wrong. Or really good, if I can spin it right...
Vivi and Steiner are neat, although I wish Garnet and Freya showed up for the party as well. Then again, if we're really getting Terra at least... and then there's always a possibility of DLC. Potentially even including my FFXIII favourites (I'm biased towards the ladies as usual, but Sazh feels like a MUST). And how about some folks with "native" chibi designs, like Lann and Reynn?
Man gonna say the remix of FFIX was really good.
Genuinely looking forward to this game!
But where's Chaos? I heard there was some guy who wanted to kill him.
I recognised most but was a bit confused about who the heck characters Sylph and Asura were meant to be until I translated the tweets. But I think the summons are a good inclusion they overlap with both the Chocobo Dungeon series and Final Fantasy series.
Also surprised they brought back the Chocobo Dungeon 2 Cid. Would have thought they'd have swapped him out for the new one.
I'd love additional characters and tracks as DLC from varied places in the franchise
@locky-mavo CHAOS!?
I was going to get this day 1 but then that sneak Kirby date has me waiting on this, though a 10% off first week sale could probably sway me I guess. I also prefer physical.
Funny thing, even planning on getting this I thought we would be racing by riding chocobo, didn't realize there were cars.😂 It really is just Mario Kart. Well it was until I saw Ifrit set fire to th racetrack and Chocobo grind it up, so I'll give them FF Kart. Chocobo GP does seem misleading though.🤷
Edit: So I played the free mobile game, which is jus a physics jumper, no racing, and I cruised through 1-8 then took about 100 tries for level 9, then 5 tries to level 10, NW I'm done.
Where is Terra!? She was already shown in trailers.
@FishyS Why didn't you buy MK8 though? Game is fantastic lol
This is looking great so far! I hope we also get a cute version of Bahamut as a playable racer too, but otherwise I like what I’m seeing.
@ItsATM When I got a Switch I thought MK9 was coming so I waited for it. And then everytime I got tired of waiting there would be new rumours of MK9, trapping me in an endless cycle. Now Chocobo racing is my only hope to ever Kart again.
Kinda wish people would stop with the 'I wish it had such and such character' and the willing of DLC into existence before a game is even released.
I miss the days where a game would release with a full roster of characters, you enjoyed what was provided and appreciated the choices of the developers. Of course it can be disappointing if your favourite doesn't make it, but I don't feel like every spin-off game has to have a bloated roster with every permutation of every character to satisfy everyone which ends up costing several times more than the base game.
I like that they're showcasing some of the lesser, more cartoony characters that fit the style and mesh well with the Chocobo-racing aspect.
Call me old fashioned, but I miss having full games on carts. I don't buy modern fighting games for this very reason. You never know when you're playing the complete game/roster.
