HAMSTER is bringing the classic shmup Raiden to the Nintendo Switch as part of its Arcade Archives range next month, it has been announced. The game arrives on the eShop on July 1st.
Originally released by Seibu Kaihatsu to great success in 1990, Raiden spawned a long-running series that continues to this day. The most recent release, Raiden IV x Mikado Remix, launched on Switch this year, and the console already has Raiden V Director's Cut.
Raiden has been ported to many home systems over the years, including the SNES, Mega Drive, PC Engine and even the Atari Jaguar. Are you excited about the fact that you'll soon be able to play the original arcade edition on your Switch? Let us know with a comment.

Yes, but wake me up when it's Raiden II.
Superb. A certain day one purchase.
This is great news. I can't wait, I'll continue flip gripping Raiden IV til then 🙂
I've been waiting for the right time to buy Raiden IV Mikado, but this is a welcome surprise. Adding to the evergrowing list of games I HAVE to buy.
And like I always said. The best game on switch in 2021 by far. Good work Mario golf.
Would be nice to get Raiden IV in Europe first to be honest.
My greedy self starting to ask where the fork is Raiden DX!!!
Will probably pick it up, but just treated myself to an atgames ultimate arcade machine so will play it on there for now
Instead of doing Collections of let’s say 10 games for $20 regular price, they are changing $8 a pop. $3 regular price should be the max for each. Very overpriced for games this old.
Finally another game that's somewhat worthwhile in ACA collection
I'm a bit puzzled by some of these 'finally another decent ACA title' comments. Some of the recent titles may not have been as well known as Raiden, but we've had The Asyanax, Hacha Mecha Fighter, and Task Force Harrier over the last six weeks, cracking games all of them.
@SpringDivorce the demand is for more early 90s games and less late 80s games.
Chase hq is coming, chase hq is coming , chase hq is coming, is chase hq ever gonna come xxx
I rarely say this, but... Day 1!
Can I finally retire my Jaguar Raiden cart?
@Dragonslacker1
if we got Chsae HQ, I honestly don't know what i'd do with myself. This cabinet was in my halls bar at Uni, and was the first arcade game i ever completed (once I learnt the secret trick!!).
@Dimey I think I only got to the second level but what a rush being in an atmospheric arcade which was incredibly exciting! I wish the second one was on its way also. One day right! X
Still regularly play The Raiden Collection on PS1 so I might have to pass on this.. aw heck, let's not pretend I'm not going to double dip as soon as it goes on sale.
@Dragonslacker1 haha, i must admit, nostalgia aside, my halls bar was awesome, genuinely had crowds around us whilst playing. football champ and super pang the other games... was devastated when the pang game on switch was a bloody flash version
Thanks Hamster it’s about time though with you boys announcing this game in your Archives lineup back in 2020! Glad it’s finally here! I’m going in!
Nice, i hope one day we'll have the complete series on the Switch.
Yep. Need Raiden II. Can't be without the fat purple laser.
If Hamster finally releases Raiden, what will my comments on Nintendolife be about?
What we need is a Raiden Collection of all the arcade games.
@Dimey
Well liquid kids has been announced recently, so Taito certainly aren't done just yet. But they haven't announced any of their better-known classics - NewZealand Story, Rainbow Islands, Rastan, Chase HQ... makes me wonder if they're saving them for the Egret mini.
It's July 1st. Where's my Raiden? Don't make me wait for Pacific time.
Hahaha suckers. I bought it off of Japan eshop. I’m like a whole few hours ahead of the curve.
Oh yes! Just saw this, love Raiden 1. Had the arcade at a place I worked at for years, it’s was the best way to kill a slow afternoon.
