Geoff Keighley surprised JRPG fans at this year's Game Awards with the announcement Square Enix would be bringing Bravely Default II exclusively to the Nintendo Switch in 2020. It's a successor to the original 3DS outing, despite the fact Bravely Second: End Layer on the 3DS already exists.
This next entry in the series is being produced by Team Asano (Bravely Default / Octopath Traveler), developed by Claytechworks (Bravely Default) and will include music by Revo (the composer of Bravely Default). According to Nintendo, players can expect a brand new story in a new world, featuring all-new Heroes of Light.

Square Enix: "announces Bravely Default 2"
Bravely Second: "Am i a joke to you?"
Thank you. Wasn't Bravely Second the sequel? I am confused now... Either way, love the franchise so I'm in!
@mariomaster96 Yeah, I thought it was strange. I can't wait for this though.
Yeah was confused at the moment. As I am assuming this is the third game in the franchise right. Still this likely mean the first two games will come to switch as well
Probably more time-twisty stuff is the reason for the title. Awesome news!
First reaction: Yes yes yes YES!
Second Reaction: Wait a second....What about Bravely Second?
New heroes apparently, so maybe they're just numbering it like the FF and DQ series with little to no relation to the previous two games?
Bravely Default is a game that I really wanted to like, but just couldn't get into when I tried to play it. Some JRPs really grip me and some just bore me for some reason and this was one of the latter.
We don't talk about Bravely Second.
Weird numbering system... just wait until Bravely Second 2...
@mariomaster96
Lol I forgot about that.
Probably went back to the first name because the first game sold a lot better.
Everybody mentions Bravely Second, but would that game happen to be one of those 1.5 games, or a prequel, or a non-canon experience? If they are making a Bravely Default 2, then it would have to be one of those.
Will definitely keep an eye on this and hope the 1st game gets a switch port to try it there too, but at the same time, these bravely games don't look any different than the RPGs that Tokyo rpg factory makes which are extremely generic so I'm going into this series with caution
This is great news! Still, I was hoping for more news than just this.
Wait so Bravely Second was not the true sequel? Also why not just call this Bravely Third? So does this means Bravely Second is its own game? Now I'm confuse so imma go beat Cloud up in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
I think this is a Final fantasy X-2 situation with Bravely Second being the sequel to the Default story while Default 2 is probably a new story in a new world but retains the core mechanism of the series
Alright! Super excited for this!
@Judal27 I've played both games; these are way less generic. They play like turn-based JRPGs with their own unique take on the battle system and a fun job system. Perhaps my favorite thing about the series is that everything isn't black and white, good guys vs. bad guys; the villains you fight have their own backstories and reasons for doing what they do. Many of the playable characters also engage in party chat and have their own personalities.
I will warn you that some people don't care for the second half of Bravely Default; their reasons are understandable, but IMO they just didn't poke around enough.
I encourage you to look up some gameplay videos and reviews to see if the games are for you. Bravely Second is a direct sequel, so playing them in order is a must.
I really liked the combat system and strategy in Bravely Default. It hooked me right away. The ending part gets a bit drawn out though. I hope they learned from that. Overall, I loved Bravely Default and it's one of my very favourite 3DS games. I'm pumped for this.
@Tyranexx So the sequel to Bravely Default 2 would be Bravely Second 2?🤔
Bravely default/second are my favorite 3ds games, so I cant wait for this game to come out
I wish the originals had been ported to Switch. I have a 3DS but just don't want to play any games on the 3DS.
@Judal27
Also play the second games demo as it’s a prologue to that game and really adds to the story.
Cool! Have the first one, it's a quite good JRPG.
Been crossing my fingers for a port of the previous bravely games for the switch. I’ll take this but still want the other games (no longer know if I should call them “the first two games”...)
I just remembered, I bought Bravely Second but never played it. Hmph! The original was epic imo!
Yawn...
What an abysmal Game Awards this has been.
I'm still waiting on the prequel, Bravely First.
HD Collection of first two games for Switch when?
Basically, they fixed the one wrong thing about the series, they took out Bravely Second.
@mariomaster96 this is actually typical of them. i mean, just look at how many kingdom hearts games it took for them to finally get to kingdom hearts 3:
Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories
Kingdom Hearts II
Kingdom Hearts coded
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
Kingdom Hearts χ[chi]
Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ
Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-
Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover
Kingdom Hearts Union χ[Cross]
Kingdom Hearts III
and thats not including all the remakes & remasters
This franchise is better than octopath traveller so thank u for that.
@Isaix Possibly. We'll see!
Just woke up. Really excited. I immediately paid attention to the music. It sounded like Revo and I'm so glad it was confirmed to be Revo. Here's Bravely Default's live concert just to remind you how good the music in that game was:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7mR4KVDo76s
Seeing as Bravely Default lost steam and I dropped it in the 4th act. I'll likely pass this one up.
Glad Revo is back. Also, new cast and locations. Looks like this'll be a much more interesting return to the series than Bravely Second was.
Man, Square surely does love dancing around the lack of Kingdom Hearts on Switch.
thought it was a remake of bravely second... for a second. speaking of bravely second did anyone else break it on their 1st playthrough? you can spam the heck out of meteor rain with mimic if you don't have mp by failing to use it with sp.
Time to sell my moth collection.
So now I NEED to play bravely second. Okay, fine, take my money. 😝
Never thought I'd see a game receive the Rambo/Alien treatment.
Hey at least it’s not called “Bravely Nuts & Bolts“
Yes! Happy to see a new Bravely game!
Oh hell yes! Finally something to REALLY look forward to again. And REVO is making the music too and not the BS people? Double yes, excitement!
Now that I notice it, I'm guessing they were going through an approach similar to SMT's Apocalypse; hence the "End Layer" part.
Oh wow... fist I thought it was a rehash.
But now I am super excited. BD is one of my fav games. ... and this looks fantastic.
Day 1 and hope there is an LE with an ArtBook
@Shadowmoon522 At least that still hasn't beat Street Fighter's longest record of getting to Street Fighter III:
Street Fighter
Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight
Street Fighter II: The World Warrior
Street Fighter II: Champion Edition
Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting
Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers
Super Street Fighter II Turbo
Street Fighter The Movie: The Game
Street Fighter The Animated Movie: The Game
Street Fighter EX
Street Fighter EX Plus
Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha
Street Fighter EX2
Street Fighter EX2 Plus
Street Fighter Alpha
Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors' Dreams
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper
And this doesn't even considered all the different home, handheld, and PC ports either except for say the NES version of Street Fighter 2010 and Street Fighter The Animated Movie: The Game which are the only SF games that are exclusive to home consoles before SFIII.
I loved Bravely Default despite how annoying shattering so many crystals got (it was worth it) so Im looking forward to see what the second will be like.
I suspect that the naming is similar to what's the case in the Final Fantasy series.
Like X-2 vs XII (One being a direct sequel and one being it's own thing)
@DaniPoo I agree, that may be it. Bravely Default 2 may be the true sequel and Bravely Second may be just a successor so it's like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 to the original. Bravely Second is like Xenoblade Chronicles X whereas Bravely Default 2 is like Xenoblade Chronicles 2. They both came after the original but one is a continuation of the world or universe from the original and one is an entirely new story.
Naming aside this is great news! Loved the first two games, a little disappointed it’s probably not featuring the original cast of characters but I trust the writers to think of new stuff. Really intrigued to see where this goes, and if an HD collection will also be coming of the original two.
Thats the Coup de Gravy!
You can't default on a default.
Sorry that high pitched noise you hear is my soul squealing in delight.
Everyone, we loved BRavely default, BUT...
Let’s hope they have found a better way than making us re-doing the game 10 times...
Awesome news. Please don't cry and moan when this game is announced for PC one year after switch release.
Really? That was the big news?
Nice! For sure I'll get this one, loved Bravely Default on 3DS.
My "head cannon" is this: Bravely Second is the direct sequel to Bravely Default, while Bravely Default II is another story, simple as that. Like Final Fantasy IV is not the sequel to Final Fantasy III.
2020 is shaping up to be another decent year for JRPG’s on the switch. With Trials of mana remake, Tokyo mirage sessions, Xenoblade chronicles and now Bravely Default 2. That is before we get the inevitable January direct. I am going to be very busy and that is before tackling my crazy backlog
They really thought this would be a good hype announcement at a western event? Yawn.
Big fan of the first two games
I suppose they went with BD "2" so they can start over, not unlike Final Fantasy, as in FF7 has nothing to do with FF8, but FF7 Crisis Core is directly related with the former.
Bravely Default -> Bravely Second
Bravely Default II = new world, new story
@AlexSora89 because the game is demanding. Switch needs all kind of adjustments... Switch matches hardware from 2012. period. With that said
Nice! I actually never came round to playing Bravely Default/Bravely Second on 3DS, since they came out before I got into turn-based JRPGs (Octopath and DQ XI fixed that this year, and now I’m rightfully obsessed with the genre), but I’m definitely excited to try this out! Between this, Animal Crossing, Rune Factory 4/5, Xenoblade and (hopefully) Story of Seasons, 2020 is already shaping up to be awesome for me!
As gpod as Bravely Second was, it was very much an asset flip of the first game and sold as such (Bravely Second sales = 1/2 × Bravely Default sales).
Looks like Bravely Default 2 will be a true sequel by comparison.
Guess they’ve adopted the Xenoblade series numbering system. Anyway, I’ve never played a game from this series, but I love Octopath, and I’ve heard good things about these games. Looking forward to the new entry.
The title for weirdest numbering still goes to Battlefield, for having numbers that make no sense and years mixed.
Runner-ups are the Xbox hardware for also having numbers that are all over the place (probably because "xbox 2" would've looked bad besides the PS3 to unaware buyers, but they needed brand recognition),
Kingdom Hearts for just occasionally having a numbered game with weird numbers,
Street Fighter for having countless versions of 2,
Luigi's Mansion, not because of the numbers, but because only the first was actually about Luigi's Mansion... The others were "Some Random Mansions" and "Hotel Vacation".
And I'm probably missing some, especially now that all series seem to have gotten rebooted, remastered, remade,... Like Hitman, Tomb Raider,...
Maybe this is part of the Mandela Effect? Maybe Bravely Second never existed? haha
@Shambo So weird they thought Xbox 2 would look bad next to PS3 but then went with Xbox One against PS4, an even larger difference.
I can't wait for the sequel to this: Bravely Default 2 Second.
Or maybe Bravely Second Second? Bravely Default 2 2? 🤔
@fadedcolors
Apparently you missed the fact Fire Emblem Three Houses won the Player's Choice GotY Award with 45% of the vote.
The western audience that tune into gaming events like this are huge JRPG fans and typically play all manner of games. Most people plugged into the community are gaming connoisseurs that dabble in all genres.
2 Bravely 2 Default
I personally don't care about the title (they have always made odd choices for this game in the past anyways). Im just so excited to see a new entry on the switch!!!
This confused me. I was already buzzed and thought it was a remake of Bravely Second. I was majorly disappointed. Glad that is not the case. Maybe we get Bravely Third after this?
There are just too many other good RPGs on Switch to even begin to wrap my brain around these titles/numberings...
Hardly evolved from the chibi artstyle..
I just really don't like this character art style, it's one of the reasons I had a lot of troubles getting into Bravely default when I picked it up. I hardly ended up playing much of it even though I'm a big RPG fan. I can dig the background art style, but man I just don't like that character art.
Not excited yet, but I still have to pkay Second. If that one doesn't kill my motivation and stomps it to pieces until I can't be bothered to fight fairly anymore like the first game did, I might give II a chance IF it doesn't make the same mistakes.
@Matroska I think "ONE" as a word is more in reference to "the best", "all in one",... Which, from a marketing standpoint, still makes more sense I guess than having a "3" compete with a "4"... But, yeah, it doesn't make complete sense anyway. "360" already meant that, probably, as 360° is a full circle.
And then "XBox One X"... One X wasn't cool enough for their Xbox One, so they added another X. Another dead end, because a Triple X Box is probably not something many parents will get for the children for... "X-mas"... Oh well.
They could always call it "series X" and make it look like a tower. Oh, they did just that, you say?
@kobashi100 This game unlike Octopath Traveler will be published by Nintendo so I doubt it'll get a PC port. Bravely Default and Bravely Second aren't even on PC yet either.
@ferroreo I think they are trying to make it like Final Fantasy now, where each numbered entry is a different world with different characters, and some of them have sequels. So Bravely Second is like Bravely Default I-2
YEEEEEEEEES
Yes...Yes....Yesssssssssss !!!!!
I had to sell my 3DS to get my Switch i am so happy to play this game again please port more 3DS games to Switch.
@Luna-Harmony it's not a port, which is great - brand new game
We did get a sequel, and there's absolutely nothing confusing about the naming either. If you seriously can't figure it out I have to wonder how you made it through the Wii/Wii U and Xbox/Xbox360/Xbox One eras. Almost as bad as people calling the PlayStation 'PS1' or 'PSX', or incorrectly calling the cross button 'ecks'.
Triforce of the Gods (A Link to the Past)
… A lot of Zelda games
Triforce of the Gods 2 (A Link Between Worlds)
Xenoblade Chronicles
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Bravely Default
Bravely Second
Bravely Default II
It's common practice. Just means it's more like the original than the sequel.
Would you be confused if we got Chrono Trigger 2, despite Chrono Cross?
Now that's awesome. The only thing that would top this is Personal 3, 4, and 5 being brought to the Switch.
@marandahir There's a reason why this game...
And this game:
Can't be on the same platform:
Despite the history behind their names and how it was solve.
Throughout the history of videogame, there was never a console that had both the physical real Final Fantasy III and physical Final Fantasy VI on the same platform. The main reason was to prevent confusion cause some of the old school gamers especially those who grew up during the 16-Bit era still refer to FFVI as FFIII.
I know that this game isn’t for me— I’ve never been into the Final Fantasy games or almost anything by Square Enix ‘cept for the newest Tomb Raider games. I’m not a fan of the chibi style. The color palette is really nice n earthy tho
This looks amazing. I’m in.
@Tyranexx I agree, I think they're going the route of FF and DQ, and this being an entirely new story/world/characters. Which I'm totally stoked about. Though I really liked Bravely Second, I'm glad to see the dev team isn't going to be trapped by the same set of characters or story, etc...
@nin10doom I'm also glad that they may not be bound by the same world this time around. While the first two games had amazing world and character building, it'd also be interesting to see what could be done with a basic template that has few restrictions.
I honestly thought when the trailer began it was going to be called Bravely Third. When Bravely Default II came up I was utterly confused.
Anyone else think the Switch is a bit over saturated with JRPGs?
I'm out here hoping Subnautica will release on the Switch one day....
@patbacknitro18 You'd think that, but nah. Full-fledged sequel. Combination of old characters and new, same world, set after the events of the first game.
I'm noticing a lot of the press is saying it's a "successor" to bravely default, not "sequel". I could be mistaken but I'm operating on the impression it takes place in the bravely default universe with a similar game engine, but completely different characters and a different branch of the original bravely default. Kind if thinking of it as a second story that runs alongside default.
@Alucard83
I never said it would have to be Kingdom Hearts III. Just the two remasters.
@retro_player_22
Physical doesn't mean much when the future of video games is digital. You can play them both on Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSlite, iOS, Android, and Wii.
I am so excited for Braverly Default 2 i loved the first one and Braverly Second on the 3DS, finally another 2020 game i'm excited for
@Judal27 I totally agree about Tokyo RPG factory games but don’t judge this series by this trailer; the Bravely games in stereoscopic 3D are some of the most eye-catching I’ve ever played. Chibi character designs aside, I prefer the Bravely games to the visuals in Octopath Traveler. Beautiful.
@Razer I don’t agree at all but I understand the rub if you’re not an RPG fan. Subnautica looks pretty sweet.
I slept on the the original Bravely Default but was thoroughly enchanted by the great and lengthy Bravely Second demo so I went back and got the first. Fantastic series. Fantastic news.
@Manah The ending to Bravely Default was a huge misfire - the game had built up so much good will that I wasn’t really annoyed right away - but then they kept at it and finally got to me. LOL. What an odd choice. But Bravely Second is wonderful and I’m stoked.
Next game: Bravely second 2, lol.
That being said: Xenoblade Chronicles x wasn't 2, and that didn't surprise anyone back in the day.
But back to Bravely: I have yet to finish Bravely default, second and Octopath. Yeah, I am hugely behind.
