Review Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers (New 3DS / SNES)
Super solo fighter
The New Nintendo 3DS is a nifty device with a number of great games available, but as everyone knows something cannot be considered a true games machine unless you can play Street Fighter II on it. Thankfully Capcom has stepped in to save New 3DS owners from the taunts of ZX Spectrum, Atari ST and CD32 gamers by bringing the game...

My Nintendo needs more training to defeat us
We're not too far away from the release of Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers which - despite a wonky first-person mode and some question marks over its status as a retail title - is an oddly tempting game. Good grief, surely it's illegal for them to be cheating us all *again* with these several versions? =P
I don't think I'll bother with this one, due to apparently being pretty unbalanced and slow. Please may we have the Super Turbo that Live Arcade/PSN are getting Capcom?
Now I wixh I waited for this, I never use the turbo mode I find normal better
This game blows. The art is damn ugly compared to Turbo and the new characters are soulless and boring, the music is rubbish and the sound effects horribly tinny. It's no 'possibly the best one' it's definitely the worst one. Highly NOT recommended.
Super Street Fighter II is the Street Fighter game to have on VC!
Turbo is pretty fast as well, but Super SFII is much better.
More game modes. 4 new characters, musics, backgrounds.
Best graphics and animations in any SNES SFII game.
My ratings on all four SNES Street Fighter games:
Street Fighter II --- 3/5 Stars
Street Fighter II Turbo --- 4/5 Stars
Super Street Fighter II --- 5/5 Stars
Street Fighter Alpha 2 --- 5/5 Stars
The best version is the Turbo version. The musics, all the voices are amazing in the turbo version, but in the super sf2 its not so cool.
Whoever is playing in the video absolutley sucks.
If only Capcom had released Super Street Fighter II Turbo on the SNES, then it'll be the best SF game. I prefer SF II Turbo instead of this Super SF II since the speed really does make the game better. But if speed doesn't matter, this is the best choice - More characters, and improved graphics and sound.
When does Super street fighter 2 turbo come?
When Virtual Console starts supporting 3DO games. It was never released on any current console the VC supports.
SSFII was, I believe, the largest SNES game ever and still had cut animation from the arcade game - and arcade Super Turbo had even more animation than Super.
Besides, Super was the next game in the series, not Super Turbo. I suppose Capcom wanted to give fans Super immediately on SNES rather than waiting for Super Turbo to be in the arcades for a while before releasing it on SNES.
I prefer SNES Super to SNES Turbo, I don't like games too fast.
Can't wait to get this one, this is the version I've been waiting.
The most awaited title in the VC ... for me and my friends to spend a lot of saturdays playing with this game. When will arrive this title here in Europe - Pal systems??
Great game !!
well japan is getting it soon, so i should imagine some time in december as well.
Later versions would improve the game more, and after Turbo the drop in speed is a bit of a step back but this is still an excellent version of SF2 - and seemingly the last we'll get on the VC.
The new characters were welcome additions (well OK T. Hawk is rubbish), there's improved character art on the versus/post fight screens. Oh and they gave Blanka a beasty death scream again - after for some reason giving him a normal one in snes turbo.
There was a cheat to increase the speed - though not matching turbo's top speeds.
Given that the game was improved with subsequent versions, I was a bit reluctant to give this full marks.
However they're unlikely to get released and you will have plenty of fun with this. If super-speedy gameplay is not your only requirment, this is the version to get.
The best street fighter ive ever played the best bit about this game is the gameplay its so much faster
You can speed up this game at the title screen where it says 'GAME START'. Just press 3x right on the d-pad and it's about just as fast as Street Fighter II Turbo. Too bad most people immediately press Start and skip the turbo settings so they're playing the slow version.
I want Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo instead!
Yes, with all the Wii Ware thats supposed to be coming, surely its possible to port pretty much anything to the Virtual Console memory permitting... aka I want Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo X Revival Championship World Warrior Extreme Editon. My god Capcom milked this franchise.
I can't wait to play this again. Best game of the series imo.
I can't wait for this to come out!!!!!! This was my favorite version and the best street fighter released for any console!!!! Well worth the Wii points. Don't let those you have this sore reviews steer you away as they don't know what they are talking about!!!!!
I almost bought this game when it came to the ntsc snes.
It was 600 finnish marks ~ 100,8€ and I was about 15 years old and my mom didnt give me the money from my bank account.
Now I will get it from Wii VC-Shop for 8€.
Thanks mom!
I think this was the only or one of the only street fighters I've ever played. Does anybody know if Midway will release the mortal kombats? That would rock!
FINALLY!
even though i was hoping for the sega version this is the Street Fighter game ive been waiting for... all the good carachters and the best gameplay.
CANT WAIT!
Nintendo Official Magazine #26 says this game is already out. They've never made a mistake like this before in their Virtual Console review section. I know NGamer sometimes gets ahead of themselves by rating unreleased games but NOM doesn't. Didn't.
Japan has had this since December 18. Why is Nintendo waiting to release this in other regions? My favorite fighter by far.
Wow, the only thing better in this version than turbo is graphics, and number of characters
Gameplay isn't as good, the voice acting and sound flat out SUCKS, I mean listen to Guile in the video.
Get Turbo, you are missing out on four characters, but they aren't much anyways.
Can't wait to play as Dee Jay! One of my favorites, along with Guile.
This game is great! Almost as much as the original, but all the new characters except Cammy, are awful.
Would it be better to get this one or Street Fighter 2 Turbo? The opinions seem pretty mixed.
For those who don't know: There is an option to speed up gameplay! On the main screen, after you press start, but before you select super battle, vs. battle, etc...push right on the D-pad 1, 2, or 3 times and you will see 1, 2, or 3 stars appear. 3 stars represents the fastest gameplay.
I loved this game as a child, I got tired of playing the older Street Fighters on the system, I wanted an updated version, then I remember renting this from Blockbuster, then rushing home to play it, the first thing that got me was the awesome intro of Ryu executing a fireball, then the music got stuck in my head forever, glad they redid it.
I highly recommend this game, it's the best Street Fighter on the system, (I didn't like Street Fighter Alpha 2 though, horrible, horrible port); 5/5 rating.
Great memories.
Tides of Chaos, I'd say get Turbo, as the only real improvement this game brings is the addition of Cammy (and perhaps Fei Long, but I always preferred him in Tekken ). But that's a minority opinion. Most people prefer this one, I think.
SSF2+ (Which I call the SNES version of SSF2) is the most advanced, old school SF2 game. By old school, I eliminate the great ST which has supers, juggles and tech throws. SSF2+ basically fixes the two very big issues of the arcade version, which is the slow speed and ridiculous Zangief glitch. This end product is then a great game and one of my favorite versions of SF2. It has a near perfect rendition of the mind games, zoning and trading that are trademarks of SF2. All the characters are more fleshed out in SSF2+ as opposed to HF and is probably the best update to the franchise. To those who complain about getting WW - I am sorry, but someone should have told you that game isn't worth downloading. I feel HF (turbo) and SSF2+ are both really great games, but on a pure competitive level, SSF2+ shines through. And as a serious competitor in ST, this serves as a great way to practice O. characters. Even if you have HF, I recommend getting this by a long shot. Five stars this game does deserve indeed.
I surprised a friend by buying him SSF2 the other day for his b/day. I went over to his house with my classic controller hidden and hinted for him to boot up the Wii heh heh
Within minutes it was like we were 14 years old again. His partner must have thought we were crazy when we were shouting words like DEVASTATING and BOOYOW at each other. SSF2 really is the best competitive game there is. Before long you really get into it and cheap tactics surface just to get the win. Before long desperation sets in and you suddenly find yourself encouraging your friend to play Deejay or something in the hope you can whoop him in the next round!
Great game and for my money this is the best version of SF2 on the SNES.
This is aweseome , shame im in AUS.
I think something needs to be cleared up about this version--it has a different engine than SF2Turbo, and most serious fans prefer the previous version; this is why many were bummed about the Street Fighter Collection for PS2 and Xbox, as you were stuck competing on the most recent, less-favored engine for SF2. I'm not the biggest fan of SF2 (or fighting games in general) in the world, but I do appreciate the difference and likewise believe Turbo's engine and "feel" are superior. I am somewhat at a loss to articulate further, except to add, perhaps, "more responsive" to my feelings toward SF2Turbo. SSF2's engine is definitely MUCH prettier, and it doesn't hurt to own both versions and compare them for one's own preference (though I really can't imagine someone who feels the difference giving the nod to SSF2), but I strongly recommend against SSF2 ahead of SF2Turbo. 3/5
wicked game, need to up me skillz though to give Daz a whupping:)
does anybody else really have to change their buttons before playing a street fighter game? i have to have the strongest attacks on Y (punch) and B (kick) and the lightest on L and R. I just can't play it otherwise.
It's out now in EU. I think, if I'm getting any of those versions at all it will be this one- exept SEGA decides to bring on theyr Gen/MD ports, this would rock!
The downside of this is, even thogh of course t'is a great game, it' the only one we got this week AGAIN... ((
Bass XO, it IS very hard to do Dragon Punches with the L trigger... I sort of see it as part of the challenge
Anyway, this is my second favourite game of all time, regardless of system. The character rooster is fantastic compared to any other fighter, gameplay is 100% great and it still looks nice. Even nicer than the ALPHA games if you ask me. I also love the teambattle option in the SNES version where a good player can choose, lets say 5 characters, while the other one have 8. Good handicap settings in regular vs matches too.
Should i still download this game, even though i have Street Fighter Alpha 3 on the GBA (which looks far superior)?
SSFII on the SNES is a good port of an average game. SFA3 on GBA is a terrible port of a great game.
Unless you're all Street Fighter-ed out, I say you should download it. I'd say its even better than SSFIIT Revival on the GBA. I found the GBA to be really unsuitable for ports of arcade fighting games.
I downloaded it .
Enjoyed it .
I never really used turbo mode on SFIIT so no worrys there for me .
Enjoyed the new characters .
The cute but deadly Cammy .
The strong T.Hawk .
The always smiling Dee Jay .
& Fei Long is based on Bruce Lee .
Hey guys, you think I should get this or Street Fighter Turbo?
I would be good if they released Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo as a Wii Ware title to make up for the lack of a Virtual Console version .
Since the game was in my opinion the best of the Street Fighters before SF3 and the Alpha series was released. I still play this game even today. I personally think the attraction ot SSF2T is the fact that its so hard compared to all the others which makes it really addictive
Guys,
The superior version of this game came out on the GBA and has Akuma in it. That game was one of the first games I bought on the GBA, and it was really enjoyable!
I only have one Classic Controller and would love to multiplayer on this. Any idea how good the controls work with a GCN controller?
KirbyPunk, probably not brilliantly. The GC controller's layout just isn't laid out for this kind of game, where you need easy, equal, access to a number of buttons.
Master Chief, I'd say get Turbo, as I think it's a better balanced game, but most people prefer Super.
There's still some Turbo in this game. At the Game Logo Screen (Where it says "Press Start") You can hit Left or Right on the D-pad to add up to 3 Turbo Stars
I hope Street Fighter 2 Alpha comes to the VC!!
THERE STILL IS TURBO AND IT GETS WAYY MORE FASTER even thought its jus 3 stars it makes the game wayyy more faster to get the turbo b4 u hit start at the game logo press right on the d pad and u know it works if the logo changes colors SO DOWNLOAD This GAME IF U LUVS STREET FIGHTER OR A GOOD FIGHTIN GAME
this game is easily the best street fighter and beet em up on the vc rite now.... basically wat DEMON212 said in his SF2T: "everybody needs a copy of this and put it in their pockets. this shud replace real street fitin. if u get beat up in this game u wud lose all ur respect."
It's the best Street Fight but no where near the best fighter. King of Fighters 94 and Samurai Shodown smokes this game.
As a casual SF2 player back in the day, I never played any version beyond SF2 Turbo. When I watch videos of Turbo, it brings back all those memories. That's why I can't decide which version to get, Turbo or New Challengers. If someone has only played Turbo, will New Challengers seem mostly the same (except for the new characters obv) or will it feel like a different game? I'm so torn. I'm going to have to re-learn most of the moves anyway, but I don't want something that's significantly different from what I remember. Help! How different is the look/sound/feel of the original 12 characters in New Challengers? Which one should I download? All opinions welcome!
@John Dough. What a coincidence! I had the very same predicament, which I asked over at the SF Turbo review! I can't help you though, I'm sorry. I was told to get New Challengers, since I don't play a lot of fighters and Bass X0 (who told me this) said it was better suited to a beginner. You're better off asking him or someone else who has actually played the games before.
Mr. Cheez, thanks for the response. Hopefully someone else will chime in. My brother (my main SNES opponent back then) doesn't have a Wii, but he's trying to talk me into Turbo b/c it's what I'll remember. If I go with New Challengers and it feels/sounds completely different, I'll be disappointed. So at the moment, I'm leaning towards the older version, but would love some other opinions first.
Even though this is supposed to be the slower, easier-going SF port on the SNES, I still suck at it. I can never beat anybody in time battle mode, and I occaisionally have to replay battles dozens of times in super battle before I finally beat my opponent. And while I try to pull off my special moves, the opponent is slugging me with theirs. I tell ya, if I started off w/ SF Turbo, I'd be dead meat.
Oh, and always glad to help, John Dough!
Start off on the easiest difficulty setting. That should help you.
This game is truly awesome, I still remember all the moves! Classic 5/5
I think i will get this SF Game since it has more stuff i don't care about Speed.I've played Slower when it comes to SSBB's Laggy Online play.
I have a very funny story! I used to hate this game SO MUCH that I threw the SNES cartige away all because of the intro! I thought I got rid my so-called Action 52 in my life. Well later on I felt sorry for throwing it away. I felt so sorry that I dedcided to download this game since I got a Classic Controller with me! I was so excited and this is a challenging game! I can't get the full experience though since I only have 1 Classic Controller now but I plan to get another one it for Christmas.
Edit: Super Street Fighter did not change the fighting genre just made it more popular. Super Smash Bros. changed it. ( Come on Super Smash Bros. get on the America Virtual Console now!)
There was a 2d fighter on the SNES that had a velociraptor as a playable character. I think it was this, but I'm not sure.
That game was called Killer Instinct.
Is the PAL conversion any better on this one than on Turbo? Turbo wasn't even full screen (rare for a VC snes game)
I love the new characters, but I still prefer Street Figher 2: Turbo for my Street Fighter fix.
^ YES ^
Turbo has the better game engine, which is a polished version of the original SF2. SSF2 is clunkier.
According to the ESRB the Genesis version of Super SF 2 is on its way
link?
http://www.esrb.org/ratings/search.jsp?searchType=title&platformsCriteria=Wii&titleOrPublisher=Super%20Street%20Fighter%20II:%20The%20New%20Challengers
It was put up there late last week.
Just bought both SSF2 and SF2 Turbo last night. Turbo was the version I had as as kid, I had never played SSF2, but wanted to check out the new fighters and moves. SSF2 is definitely slower, but I didn't really mind it, what bugged me were the variations in voice acting (super gay announcer) and animations (Blanka's spin move is rendered totally lame). All in all, an awesome game, and I love the new moves (fire hadukan!), but if you're going to buy one version, get Street Fighter 2 Turbo.
Meh, I still prefer this version over Turbo, but still, nothing, beats Super Turbo HD Remix! Now THAT is the ultimate Street Fighter experience!
so wats better super street fighter 2 turbo or new challengers
Super Turbo obviously. An additional characters, more moves and better balancing.
Bass X0
Thanks
@Super Sonic: I lol'd at the first part of your story. "I used to hate this game SO MUCH that I threw the SNES cartige away all because of the intro!"
Awesome game, one of my fav fighters, but does anyone know whats new with the re-downloadable version?
Well.... I was talking to a friend the other night in the pub and he suggested that we meet up for a game of Street Fighter 2 and I had to ask him what version he has. He said Super Street Fighter 2! So in order to get in some practice before I play, I've downloaded it...
@JTCPingas09: That was me when I was Super Sonic.
Best Street Fighter hands down!
