You know, when I see these kinds of discussions about graphics and HD, all I can think of is that in about 10 or 15 years time these conversations will be moot. There's going to be a certain point where the machines will be so powerful that our limited human eyes won't be able to tell the difference. Until we all get cyborg eyes of course, then it will matter again.
@Lady Gryphon Yeah, improved graphics don't really impress me that much anymore. Many people still play Super Mario Bros. and Pacman after all this time. If graphics matter, then I think it's more to do with style. I like the visual style of Yoshi's Island a lot more than many games with better graphics.
Irony is the fact that Microsoft and Sony made fun of the Wii's motion control and wrote it off as infantile, and are now playing catch-up to do the same thing. That is irony.
Irony is not "somebody says the Wii should have HD but, thinking about it, it doesn't really need it." That's just an observation.
This is more like somebody telling you that you should sell your car and buy a school bus instead. Then you calmly explain the reasons that driving a school bus would be impractical. DUDE! HOW IRONIC!!
That's... not irony either. It's just hypocrisy. Or, to be more charitable, the public spectacle of the humble-pie-eating contest between Sony and Microsoft.

I'd say its both irony and hypocrisy. Its especially ironic that what they once wrote off as stupid was what got them the most attention at E3 and is probably what they are counting on most to give them increased sales.
i just want to play ssbb on my computer monitor(true HD)
If there were an official Nintendo vga adapter/converter then a lot of people would be happy... like this Television is coming to an end, soon its only gonna be online tv. The only thing people are going to have to worry about is a monitor and speakers (dvr via computer hardware).
I dont care about graphics, as long as i have a crisp and clean picture. Soon thats all that there will be...
The reality is that keeping the Wii non-HD kept down production costs and makes the system cheaper to develop for; not only in the sense of not requiring newer hardware, but the licensing fees associated with the HD systems (the days when companies like Philips published the specs for cassettes and CDs so anyone could make the hardware at no extra cost to promote take-up have been gone for years).
I personally have no need for HD video for films or television; I think it might be nice for certain games, but for the majority it's not necessary.
@Sean Aaron, there is some confusion over what Nintendo could of offered with HD.
Speaking as a techie person, I believe a number of Wii gamers like myself that complain about HD is not a simple case of wanting games to look as good as 360/PS3, Nintendo's console could use the same graphics/textures etc just output them at a better, crisper 720p, the same way emulators on PC's make 3D games look better.
The addition of digital audio and 720p doesn't HAVE to increase development costs, but if you want to make everything look as good as 360 then yeah, it would.
If they released a "Wii 2" today with 720p it could simply output its current 3D graphics just with a better graphics card and alot of games would look better.

I understood that the HDMI interface had to be licensed in order to use it, but I may be all confused there...

According to WikiPedia (so take it with a grain) Component video supports all resolutions and is not inferior to HDMI in terms of visuals (basically HDMI is digital and has audio and video in one cable --which is the only attraction to me -- component is analogue and is separate cables). I suspect that the Wii lacks the necessary components for HD output which were probably a bit more expensive at the time of release. Iwata has already indicated that a future Wii release could support HD output so we may see that in the future, but depending upon how much more the HD chipset would have cost I cannot say I'm sorry to see it absent from the Wii, though having an HDMI cable would have saved me the cost of a component switchbox.
Like I'm predicting the world will end tomorrow. That's totally different than me saying the world NEEDS to end tomorrow. lol
Hey, guess what: We're all still here.
Also, yes, component can go up to 1080i, but not 1080p. And for the SERIOUS audio/videophiles, HDMI is better than component for lower resolutions as well. I'm using HDMI for my 720p TV on my PS3 and 360. But component would be plenty sufficient for an upscaling HD Wii, anyway.

WikiPedia says 1080p as well, but then it is WikiPedia!
My tv only does 1080i max, so I'm not fussed anyway...
Oh I believe it is ironic - to think that once was considered a fatal flaw in wii has become a boon to it. While others profusely bleed red ink, Nintendo drowns in black ink.

I quite agree.
Analyst speculate about an 'hd' wii but who shall make games for it? The greatest news from E-3 was Mr. Iwata proclaiming that their idea to keep Wii sales going was not a pricecut - but compelling software. What a wonderful sense of security to know that Nintendo plans to keep the heart of EAD fully behind Wii. Splitting Wii dev into HD and non HD titles does not make sense to me.....this would weaken 'both' consoles. Do not kill the Golden Gooose becasue her eggs are 'only' 480p, says I.
IGN: The holiday Wii lineup looks thin for the hardcore crowd. We see this. Gamers see this. What, if anything, is Nintendo planning to address it?
Oh good, I am neither a gamer or hardcore. Saves me from having to be IGNorant. Right, Down, A, Down, Right, Up
