Let me start off by saying that I really enjoyed Nintendo's E3 presentation. There were lots of games that I want and appreciate being released.
Then I looked at the pre order pages...
$60 for Advance Wars (after thoroughly enjoying the $15 wargroove)
$60 for 2D Metroid (and we already have tons of well made metroidvanias for <= $20)
$60 for Super Monkey Ball collection
I can't with these prices anymore. They just don't make sense.
This year, I'll be picking up Skyward Sword (because I tossed my Wii and really want to finish this one)
And because it'll get plenty of game time with the family and some friends:
Mario Party Superstar, Super Monkey Ball collection, and Mario Golf.
As for single player games, I'm probably sticking with indies, game pass games, and the occasional Sony AAA (after it gets its eventual deep discount)
(I'll still get Nintendo's AAA single player games such as Botw 2, but no more overpriced AA games)
I picked up Paper Mario Origami King on sale for $40 and I'm already regretting it. Should have got bug fables instead for half the price. I'm going to try to stick it out though. I'm only about an hour in and it's still very much in tutorial mode.
I’ll pay for Metroid because I love what they showed and prefer 2d games. Monkey ball should be able to be found on deep discount. Sega always discounts their games. On the other hand Nintendo runs their business like apple. They know you want it. And they are going to charge you for it. No favours. I’m happy I bought a Xbox with gamepass for the rest.
I'd pay for BOTW2 and maybe Monkey ball, but stuff these days is really overpriced.

Botw2 would be worth $60 to me (although I still need to finish the first one) But I certainly wouldn't put Botw2 at the same price point as Advance wars.
Yeah, I know we may not have been told everything that's being added yet but £50 for Advance Wars seems a bit ridiculous when you can get the GBA games for about £6 each on Wii U.
Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Switch Online
If Metroid Samus Returns was any indication Dread will easily be worth full price, and I already know I'm probably going to be pre-ordering SMT V when that goes live next week. I'll probably not be getting Mario Party, Mario Golf or Super Monkey Ball, and Advance Wars is like right at the end of the year

@Dogorilla While that's true, these games are not only fully remade with new graphics, but now have online multiplayer, which sounds like (although unconfirmed) it'll let you pull from both games content on new versus maps.
Depending on just how many versus maps there are (currently stated as dozens, read 25+), that might be a whole extra campaigns worth of content extra, with a bonus of far more replayability. Or it could just be campaign maps but... Those aren't designed to be fair typically.
Anyways, my point is there's a lot you'd miss by just getting the old games, and it's quite possible they've packed even more in we don't know about yet.
Edit: also it was implied all maps will support up to four players, which rules out a good chunk of story maps as well. Again, kinda trying to read between the lines but it does seem likely.
With Link's Awakening, Nintendo demonstrated that they can re-make a single GBC game, charge full price for it, get rave reviews, and still sell over 5 million copies.
There's not exactly a huge amount of pressure on them to charge less for their remakes.
I’ve been using my switch as a nostalgic (SNES games) and indie machine. So many great games for £20 or less that I can’t bring myself to pay £40+ for the first party games as much as I’d love to play them. I haven’t even picked up Smash Bros, Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8, DK Tropical Freeze, Links Awakening yet. I want them all, but F those prices.
I’ll just play my Hades, Hollow Knight, Ori 1 and 2, Yooka and the Impossible Lair, Okami, Axiom Verge, Dead Cells, CrossCode etc. You can pick them all up for £15 or less if you’re smart.
@Oswinner Exactly. Indies are producing really high quality games that are so much cheaper and arguably just as good as what Nintendo is making. At this rate, I'll probably be skipping most (not all) 1st party titles until they go on sale (probably only for 30% off). Meanwhile, I'll be picking up Axiom Verge 2 on day one (if it reviews well enough).
I don't even entirely disagree with your logic but there's some amount of reasons for the price disparity. Nintendo and especially Nintendo's IP, are popular, have value and have a marketing budget behind them to reach a wider group of people. They're also made by far more people who have to be paid. So for a combination of reasons why they can get away with it and reasons why they should, they cost a lot more.
Whereas those indie games often have to sell for less. Partially because of a general stigma that indie games shouldn't cost as much as games from major companies and partially because they aren't big names with marketing budgets. Especially for new IP from often unknown developers, if they're not cheap enough, that alone might just kill their game. But thankfully, they're smaller devs who DON'T have as many employees.
Point is, you should probably be equally annoyed that those indie games might have failed if they cost merely half of what Nintendo is charging.
I'm already pretty against Metroid Dread, but $60 is way too steep for what it's offering so that's kinda nailing the coffin for me. Most Metroid games can be finished in a couple hours, with the longest taking 6-7 hours if you are taking your time. And unless they REALLY shake things up with the formula, we already have plenty of games that emulate the Metroid style and many of them do things in such unique and wonderful ways that they make the series look stale. We really don't need another copy/paste job but with Samus in a new colored suit. I'm definitely keeping my eye on it for further information, but for me, it's not looking so good right now!
With Link's Awakening, Nintendo demonstrated that they can re-make a single GBC game, charge full price for it, get rave reviews, and still sell over 5 million copies.
This is a bad take. In what world is Link's Awakening HD just a GB remake? By that logic Samus Returns was also. I know we as Nintendo fanboys like to say "gameplay > graphics" but some of you really are taking the piss....
On the topic of game prices. I played full RRP for games I didn't play much and have put hours into games that were effectively free. So the question should be how much value will you extract from the title.
Advance Wars? If you're into it it's a time sink. As a fan my $/hr on it is pretty low already so I'm not going to complain about the price of a remake. Metroid Dread I'll definitely play to completion (as I did with Link's Awakening HD). That's all you can ask for.
Also, inflation. These prices are not high compared to previous generations.
I think you can sort of justify £50/$60 for RPGs, Action and Adventure games, but part and mini game collections are not of equal effort or value for the consumer.
Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?
