We've had starters that gain secondary types during their evolutionary paths since Gen 1, but they've always been single types to begin with, so the extra type has been more of a 'cool new addition' rather than a heavy change of the Pokemon's characteristics.
For the record I'm pretty sure Bulbasaur started and stayed as a dual Grass/Poison type. I'm not sure if I buy the typing leak, Rowlett becoming Ground seems drastic. But maybe they will mix it up or pull a Bulbasaur and keepm the dual typing.
I only wonder, as with Bulbusaur to Venusaur, how unique they can make the three if they are all Grass/Flying and that they won't be too similar to each other.
They're just going to ditch the fire and make it fighting/fighting type. It's fore paws, back paws, tail, and ears will all be fists. It's final form name will be 'Paw-unch.'
If Rowlet would end up Grass/Ground after evolution, it would probably be pure Grass. I can't imagine it evolving into anything other than Grass/Flying.
@FriedSquid Yeah, I was referring to the Charmander line which picks up a Flying type.
I personally don't find it too bad when when evolutionary chains stay quite similar. In many cases, I actually prefer it to when they change so drastically that you can't see much of the Pokemon you originally picked left in them. I find Serperior and Samurott a bit disconcerting.
I think the Bulbasaur line pulls off the 'same but bigger/more overwrought' thing well, and I like the lines of all the GSC starters, none of which do anything drastic. Blazikem in probably the best perversion of its starter form in a non-obvious way, although it leaves Combusken as a bit of an ugly duckling.
Litten and Rowlett both have fairly obvious 'bigger, prouder, nobler' versions to evolve into in the form of a great wise owl, and a regal tiger (or other wild cat). Popplio I'm struggling to imagine, but there's probably plenty of scope for giant walrus/seal/narwhal type designs.
I remember when mega beedrill was confirmed, for about 2 days everybody was hyping that it's "bug/dragon" due to translation error.
I highly doubt those types on the website are significant for anything. They may be for future pokemon mentioned, kinda like pancham and geodude just to give a little more info on new pokemon, but chances are those images were just test or placeholders incase they needed them.
I mean, there is no way ground and fighting are the literal only types here.. nonetheless for the starts as it would make 0 sense for a seal to be fighting or a flying type to turn ground, and if new pokemon get introduced it's unlikely only 2 pokemon that are ground and fighting will be shown til release.
I still remember they never mentioned the 3rd evo starters of X/Y or BW until the games were out.
Also I found this leaked image of litten's 2nd evolution:
I think the supposed idea with making Rowlett Ground-type is probably based on a burrowing owl. But removing its Flying type definitely seems strange for it to not keep if that were the case.
As for Popplio supposedly becoming Fighting, I got nothing, but if it were true they may have something creative planned. When you think about it, there's not a real good reason for Torchic, a chick, to become Fighting type either. Maybe that was based on cockfighting?
Maybe if Popplio does become Fighting-type it will be based off of a Navy SEAL.
I will be extremely disappointed if Game Freak doesn't finally design a new dolphin Pokemon in the new Hawaiian-themed generation as it would be perfect. It's time.
