Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Pokémon Trading Card Game

Lofoten

Snorelax… I find both box arts to be surprisingly boring,
but of the two, the American is the best. The Japanese one barely looks like a Pokémon game.

I get the symbols are from the cards, but still - the game should also promote itself to people who are not already into the card game.

Would be better if they showed the front side of a few cards with actual Pokémon..

Re: Feature: 12 Things Switch 2's Mysterious Not-C-Button Might Do, Maybe

Lofoten

"#6 'Mouse Mode' button
If the optical sensors in the Joy-Con are going to be used for mouse-like input, you don't want them active all the time you're holding the controllers normally; a discrete button for turning that mode on and off makes eminent sense.

Not the most exciting possibility, granted, but a realistic one at least. Okay, let's get back to dreaming."

In the reveal video both joy-cons were mousing around. And if both are mice it would be strange to only have a mouse mode button on one joy-con.

Also a mouse mode option is possibly best placed in an in game menu.

@Athropos
"One of my neighbors is named Mario and owns a driving school named Super Mario. As long as it's not related to video games, I don't see any issue with that."

A super market owned by Mario called "Super Mario" makes sense.

A driving school called Super Mario might have a weaker case.

Seems it's most likely inspired by the games?

Also Nintendo's Mario and cars are connected: Super Mario Kart anyone?

What does the logo look like?

Re: Random: Astro Bot "Almost Outdid Nintendo At Its Own Game", Jokes Reggie

Lofoten

"During the recent New York Game Awards 2025 event, ex-president of Nintendo of America offered his own opinion on the game after it won the award for 'Best Kids Game', jokingly stating "I have to admit it, Astro Bot almost outdid Nintendo at its own game"."

The game has won 16 awards so far.
And gotten top scores by a lot of game critics. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astro_Bot

So why must it be a joke when Reggie says it's a good game?

Reggie has told he bought an Xbox instead of a GameCube.
And he did host an Xbox event for Microsoft in 2021.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Mario Kart 64

Lofoten

@Olliemar28

"Mario Kart 64. The western design for this one is basically the same for both North America and Europe (with the addition of the border for European regions), so both will be teaming up to take on Japan."

The black border is not the only difference between the European and American box art. The European one shows more of Mario's gokart on the right and less of Wario on the left. The original American box has a red partially see through column that covers the right part of the art, around 1/5 of the total art. So some might prefer the European one.

Would perhaps also be more fitting to pick the original cover rather than the players choice version for the American version. The color of the column is different and the players choice emblem covers a bit more of the art.

The European version also has a players choice version.

Re: Video: We've Spotted Some Secrets In The Nintendo Switch 2 Reveal Trailer

Lofoten

@AlanaHagues

"IR Camera 2
The IR camera isn't new to the Switch consoles, so you probably spotted this during the trailer, but what may have gone unnoticed is that there's actually an IR camera on both Joy-Con.

On the current Switch, the IR camera is only on the right Joy-Con, but here, there's a second one on the left Joy-Con. At least, that's what it looks like. It might just be an aesthetic thing, but that'd be a little weird."

I think maybe the IR Camera is gone.

If one looks at around 1:13 in the reveal video, when the mice are racing, we see both the potential IR-areas and they don't look transparent. And the line between materials of this area just continues over the bend - it's not a small area with its own plastic piece for the IR-area like on the Switch 1.

Re: Nintendo's Share Price Dips Following Its Big Switch 2 Reveal

Lofoten

Nintendo are doing good.

I think it would have been worse had they not showed Mario Kart 9 though. And if they had focused more on games in the reveal, I think the stock would have risen.

Wrote a comment about the stock marked on monday after the rumors of the Switch 2 reveal might not show games:
"I think only focusing on the console and not also the games in the Switch 2 reveal will be a big mistake.(...) Can imagine the Nintendo stock might take a dive if this turns out to be true. (...)"

Nintendolife wrote:
"To elaborate, the reveal trailer will supposedly focus entirely on the console itself, with Nate the Hate stating that "there is not going to be any presence of games"." https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2025/01/rumour-switch-2-will-reportedly-be-officially-revealed-this-thursday

I wonder if Nintendo always planned to show Mario Kart 9 in the reveal, or if it was included after almost everything about the console itself was leaked before the reveal.

Lofoten

@Polley001

"I don't expect it to be called Mario Kart 10, and they've said themselves in the past they don't think they'll do numbers again, that's part of the point."

When and where did Nintendo say this?

Well, we'll see if Nintendo are truly done with numbers in names or not.
They did annonuce a console just some hours ago called "Switch 2".
Also, the Mario Party mainline games for home console went all the way up to 10 before they started calling it something else.

"Mario Kart (2025) being the 9th Nintendo-developed Mario Kart game is flat-out incorrect"

Sure.

But "Mario Kart (2025)" still is the 9th Nintendo-developed Mario Kart game for consoles.

Re: Feature: Everything You Missed In The Switch 2 Mario Kart Reveal - Characters, Features, Easter Eggs

Lofoten

@bronZfonZ
@Polley001

People can of course call the upcoming Mario Kart game whatever they want. But not all names will be easily understood by others.

I just find it somewhat peculiar to complain that a gaming news site chooses to call it Mario Kart 9 while we wait for an offcial confirmation of the name.
The shortest and easiest way to describe it as of now is Mario Kart 9.

What will Nintendo call the game?
Based on Mario Karts previous console games I think the upcoming Mario Kart will probably either be called "Mario Kart 9" - as the two previous games for console was Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8, or Nintendo might call it "Mario Kart" + some new name.

If you think the new game will be called Mario Kart 10 or Mario Kart X, that is of course fine. But I doubt this will be the case.

If there ever comes a new Mario Kart for mobile phones it might be called Mario Kart Tour 2.
If there ever comes a new Super Mario for mobile phones it might be called Super Mario Run 2.

Re: Feature: Everything You Missed In The Switch 2 Mario Kart Reveal - Characters, Features, Easter Eggs

Lofoten

@Polley001

"You guys are literally proving my point here but sure, let's pretend like you don't understand why this is not the defacto 9th game because you're scared of the spooky mobile live service game (mobile point aside, Final Fantasy 14 says hi)."

The Mario Kart game for Switch 2 is the forthcoming Mario Kart in the mainline series for console. It will be the 9th mainline Mario kart game for Nintendo consoles.

Mobile games, arcade games and ports will not change this.

Look for example here:
https://www.mariowiki.com/Mario_Kart_(series)

Re: Feature: Everything You Missed In The Switch 2 Mario Kart Reveal - Characters, Features, Easter Eggs

Lofoten

@WheresWaveRace

"8deluxe could be considered the 9th title and then Tour (albeit presumably not considered mainline) could be considered 10. This could be MK11 and the two 1s turn into the lanes on a dead straight highway leading to the vast openess of an open world MK."

Well, then we also have:
Mario Kart Arcade GP (Arcade 2005)
Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 (Arcade 2007)
Mario Kart Arcade GP DX (Arcade 2013)
Mario Kart Arcade GP VR (Arcade 2017)
Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit (Switch 2020)

So Mario Kart on Switch 2 is really Mario Kart 16?

I would argue the Switch 2 entry is the 9th mainline Mario Kart.

(Perhaps Wave Race 4 will come to Switch 2.)

Re: Feature: Everything You Missed In The Switch 2 Mario Kart Reveal - Characters, Features, Easter Eggs

Lofoten

@Polley001

""we're going to simply refer to as Mario Kart 9 until Nintendo says otherwise" why? There's no reason to go with something so divisive over like Mario Kart (2025) or Mario Kart (Tentative) or Mario Kart (Nintendo Switch 2) or something. Just feels like argument bait."

I don't see the problem at all. "Mario Kart 9" is short and to the point. Everybody knows what it means, it's the Mario Kart game after 8. And whatever it will end up beeing called, it will still be the 9th Mario Kart game.

Re: Joy-Con Mouse Functionality Seemingly Confirmed In Switch 2 Trailer

Lofoten

Excited for this.

Copy of my comment from 6. January 2025:

Concerning the laser on the joy-con:
Using it as a mouse would be a very useful option for many types of games.
It probably has a base it slots into for this use.

  • Point and click games.
  • Several types of puzzle games.
  • DS, 3DS and Wii U games that used the stylus.
  • Games that used the pointer on Wii, Wii U and Switch.
  • A ton of different old and new PC games.
  • Several types of strategy games
  • Creative games / programs
  • Board games / card games
  • The new upcoming Layton game: Professor Layton and the New World of Steam
  • Games that used the NES Zapper gun
  • Games that used The Super Scope / Nintendo Scope (The bazooka zapper for the SNES)
  • Zapper arcade games
  • Mouse games for the SNES: Mario Paint, Mario & Wario (The game with a bucket on the head)
  • Mario Paint 2025.
  • Mario Maker 3.
    Oh wow. That would be so good.
    For me Mario Maker worked like a treat on Wii U with the pen, but not so much on Switch with the use of buttons or finger.
  • Shooting games.
    I imagine Metroid Prime 4 would then have the option to use one joy con for movement using the analogue stick, and using the other joy con as a mouse for shooting.

(...)

Nintendo might also release a pro mouse like they will certainly release a new pro controller.

"We don't know how exactly Nintendo feels about the supposed 'Switch 2' leaks, but former company employees Kit and Krysta - who had over 10 years of first-hand experience at Nintendo of America - have now chimed in with their thoughts and insights.

When the pair were at Nintendo leaks were common, but they were never this extensive. Krysta believes Nintendo likely would be "really mad" and "very upset" about what's happened in the leadup to the Switch "successor" announcement, due to these "constant disruptions"."

When the pair were at Nintendo leaks were common?

Kit and Krysta do not say this in the video?

(Or does Nintendo Life have some statistics of Nintendo leaks from this time period?)

What Kit and Krysta said in the video about the amount of leaks while they were at Nintendo:

The Reactions Inside Nintendo As Switch 2 Leaked

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzRh5csh7mI
0:40:
Kit: ..because so much has leaked and I think they have been so bad that Nintendo just has reached this point where they have to re-evaluate everything regarding how they handle information security, product security, before these things get announced, because at one point, when we were there, the things they were doing worked. And for the most part we could keep things under wraps.
Krysta: Yeah.
Kit: And there still were leaks, but they certainly were not to this extent and certainly not to this calibre of a product.
Krysta: Yeah.

Re: Nintendo Lawyer Breaks Down What Makes An Emulator Illegal

Lofoten

These people defending their piracy often portray themselves as victims.

Victims of high prices and/or evil cooperations that don't have their full catalogue of games available for sale at any given moment.

I must say the victim mentality is not pretty.

Seems it is a generational thing.

Re: Nintendo Lawyer Breaks Down What Makes An Emulator Illegal

@PinballBuzzbro

"one is not entitled to sell retro games for the price of a ps5 and a new car combined either😃 ESPECIALLY in this modern climate where everything is a billion dollars now and the rich oafs in charge wanna gorge us for our money at every given chance there is NO reason I should give someone 500$ for a Super Nintendo game nowadays."

If you own a video game you can try to sell it for whatever price you want. If you try to sell something for a higher amount than others are selling it for or people are willing to pay for it, it probably wont sell though. That is how the second-hand market work.

Exactly what Super Nintendo game that you want costs 500 USD?

And if it really cost that much and you really want it, then you can either save up some money and work for it, or keep looking for a lower price. Or use your time and money on some other video game.

If you can't afford a specific video game it's ok to take it?
Have heard that one before from people trying to defend piracy, and it still makes zero sense to me.

Re: Nintendo Lawyer Breaks Down What Makes An Emulator Illegal

Lofoten

@58shiftbarackyeaugh

"Ok, then redirect to a place I can OFFICIALLY buy Sonic Heroes if it's "just an excuse". (keyword being official)"

Just because something is not for sale, does not mean one is entitled to take it for free.

Also: Try the second-hand market. For example www.ebay.com
There are many official releases of Sonic Heroes for sale there.

@antdickens

Some more ideas:

1.) Wanted list with possibility to rank/filter how much you want it:

  • Must have
  • Want
  • Maybe

2.) Menu/email Alert if on sale.

3.) Filters: Games on sale from own wanted list. (All or one or two of the ranks.)

4.) List based on the most wanted games from all users.

5.) Filter: Games on sale from most wanted games from all users.

Lofoten

@AlexOlney

"Donkey Kong Country Returns HD explains everything you need to know about it in the title: it’s Donkey Kong Country Returns in HD, and unfortunately, it’s not much more than that. This is that same great game from the Wii era tarted up a bit here and there."

Why not add some Wii, 3DS and Switch comparison pictures and/or video to the review?

Re: Review: Donkey Kong Country Returns HD (Switch) - Aping A Retro Classic

Lofoten

"Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is a fine way to play the 2010 original, but it’s also lacking any real reason for fans to double-dip beyond waggle-free controls."

Well, I can think of a few more reasons to double dip apart from the option to waggle or not:

  • The extra levels from the 3DS version is present. For those that played the Wii version and not the 3DS version.
  • For those that played the 3DS version and not the Wii version: Larger screen handheld or on TV.
  • HD visuals.
  • Better colours than the Wii version (as far as I can see from comparisons.)
  • Other graphical upgrades.
  • To play it on the Switch: A current console.
  • Possible to switch between handheld and TV mode.
  • A new easier difficulty level is present and useful for those that found the original too hard.
  • It's a good game. A good game can be played more than once. And because of the reasons above one might want this new version for a new play through.

Re: Review: Donkey Kong Country Returns HD (Switch) - Aping A Retro Classic

Lofoten

@AlexOlney

"Joys:

  • It's the same game from 2010
  • 'New' accessibility options curb difficulty spikes
  • Looks surprisingly good considering how little has changed

Cons:

  • It's the same game from 2010
  • Strange, minor oversights prevent it from being definitive
  • Original developers go rudely uncredited"

I agree the the original developers should be credited,
I don't agree however that it should affect the "Cons" and possibly the score of the game.

Maybe add these to the Joys: (Taken from the review.)

  • Motion controls are optional. Gone is the need to waggle the Wii Remote and/or Nunchuk to roll.
  • The additional levels from the 3DS version are present.

Re: Review: Donkey Kong Country Returns HD (Switch) - Aping A Retro Classic

Lofoten

@AlexOlney

"and even worse there are some new (extremely minor) blemishes that weren’t previously present.

Firstly, the sound mixing is a bit… all over the place. Certain cutscenes are whisper-quiet, but the loading screen music is far too loud in our opinion; it’s more reminiscent of the 3DS version but louder still to our ear.

Donkey Kong rises with his balloon strangely quickly when you lose a life, and the animation that plays just before is oddly stretched, as though the original hadn’t been intended for widescreen displays, which it actually was. Don’t get us wrong, these are all incredibly insignificant complaints, but they’re all symptoms of what feels like a lacklustre remastering of a beloved game.

The real clincher, however, is performance. For an overwhelming majority of the time, the game runs at a solid 60fps, but there are instances where dropped frames occur, even in small sections of entire levels when the game appears to be struggling, such as the Beach world's boss fight. It’s infrequent enough that it doesn’t spoil the fun, but this is a Wii game at its heart, the Switch should have absolutely zero issues running it flawlessly, and given the full retail price tag, we’d expect that from a first-party release.

The broad feeling around the game is one of missed opportunity, this was a chance to create the definitive version of Donkey Kong’s fabulous 2010 return; instead, Forever Entertainment has delivered a product that is good enough rather than what Retro Studio’s classic revival deserves. It’s still the same great game at its core, but it’s lacking the love that the original had poured into it, a fact which is capped off by the original developers' names being entirely absent from the credits beyond a cursory 'Based on the work of the original development staff'."

"Cons:
(...)

  • Strange, minor oversights prevent it from being definitive"

Well. These "extremely minor" problems could probably be fixed in a small update?
Maybe Nintendo life could contact Forever Entertainment and ask if they could fix them? https://forever-entertainment.com

Re: Review: Donkey Kong Country Returns HD (Switch) - Aping A Retro Classic

Lofoten

@AlexOlney

"But there’s one mechanic that lets things down, and that’s blowing. By holding down on the D-Pad or left stick and hitting the action button, DK will crouch and gently blow something he could probably slam with his palms. You can use this to blow out fire, interact with background objects and a few other things, and it’s a bloody nuisance, frankly. It kills the pace whenever you’re required to use it, is direction-sensitive, and is tellingly not present in the sequel, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. We would never expect a remaster to remove a mechanic like this (although it’s nice to wish), but forcing the blow on us after all these years reminded us why we were so happy to give it up.

Luckily, it’s rarely required if you’re not aiming for 100% completion, although the number of times we’ve killed our speed to blow on a suspicious-looking reed only for it to frustratingly wither away and yield nothing in return is higher than we’d like. It was about four times, but that’s four times too many."

For those that did not know - Shigeru Miyamoto came up with the blowing:

How do you know?

Re: Rumour: 'Switch 2' Will Reportedly Be Officially Revealed This Thursday

Lofoten

I think only focusing on the console and not also the games in the Switch 2 reveal will be a big mistake.

I can imagine the reveal will be rather underwhelming for a lot of people.
For many fans, potential new consumers and investors.
Can imagine the Nintendo stock might take a dive if this turns out to be true.

3 reasons:
1. It's a next generation Switch, not something totally new.
2. Seems all or most features of the new console has already been leaked.
3. In any case the most important thing selling a new console is the exclusive games for it, not the hardware.

Re: Feature: 8 Games That Defined The Switch Generation

Lofoten

@Yomerodes
"The article is talking about the Switch 'generation', not the Switch 'videogame system'. In videogame terms a generation is a technology cycle that encompasses multiples consoles. Back in the day Gamecube and ps2 were the in the same gen, and likewise the SNES and Genesis/Megadrive. What is more, the eight generation of videogame consoles is widely accepted to include both the Wii U and Switch.

In short, this is a list of the most defining games of the past decade...that can be played on Switch. According to the team at Nintendo Life of course, I too would swap some games, but the intention of the list is clear."

Nowhere did I claim the list should only be Switch exclusive games. I just find it rather curious that there are only 2 out of 8 games on the list that are Switch exclusives.

To quote Nintendo lifes own definition of the list:
"games that we feel captured the zeitgeist on Switch somehow. Games that, when we look back in 10, 20, 30 years, will make us think of Nintendo's first little handheld hybrid and the fun we had with it."
