Re: Retro Game Challenge 1 & 2 Are Getting Switch Ports In Japan

Bassman_Q

I kinda forgot about this game, but now I recall it being among my favorite DS games back in the day - I especially loved the Ninja platforming games and the RPG game. I also remember being inspired by these little games and creating a bunch of WarioWare DIY minigames based on them. I would love to see this get localized here in the US!

Re: Video: We Weren't Sure We Wanted A Zelda: Link's Awakening Remake, Until We Got It

Bassman_Q

When the trailer started and they showed the waves, I had a hunch it was Link's Awakening; since it's my favorite 2D Zelda game, I'm ecstatic about this remake!

However, do we know what price point they'll use for it? I really hope it's around $40 instead of the full $60, cuz as much as I love the game, it'd be kind of hard to justify paying $60 for a remake of a game I could pay $6 for.

Re: Fire Emblem Heroes Earns $16.8 Million In The Month Of September

Bassman_Q

I got into the game this past February or so... it's sure addicting to level up your characters and try to roll for your favorite characters, and they keep releasing new banners about every week, so the content keeps coming. I agree that the tactics in this game is nearly non-existent (and since I've played this game a lot I've noticed that my skills in regular FE games have gone down quite a bit, unfortunately), but it's still pretty fun to play in short bursts to get a few orbs and roll once every few days.

I still haven't dropped any actual money on the game, though, so I'm not a part of that $16.8M

Re: Guide: The Best Metroid Games - Every Metroid Game Ranked

Bassman_Q

I enjoyed Super Metroid when I first played it about 8 years ago on the Wii VC, but when compared to the GBA games (specifically Zero Mission), the movement feels too slow. Because of that, for me I'd say:
Prime 1 > Zero Mission > Super > Fusion

I also enjoyed AM2R quite a bit more than Samus Returns so I'd place that right after Zero Mission despite it being an unofficial remake.

Re: Hands On: Taking The Path Less Traveled In Octopath Traveler

Ever since I played the first demo a few months ago, this has been my most-hyped game of the year. I really love how it mimics some of the style and charm from FFVI, one of my favorite RPG's of all time, especially with its colorful ensemble cast.

That being said, I find it hard to believe that there won't be an overarching storyline to bring some (if not all) of the characters together for a final battle. Just from the demo, I noticed that after playing Cyrus's intro chapter, a hooded character that resembled the people with the Raven tattoo appeared for a few seconds, seemingly following Cyrus as he tries to find the lost tome. I wouldn't be surprised if at least Cyrus's and Primrose's plotlines become intertwined due to this Raven tattoo cult.

Re: Video: RiME Is An Example Of How Not To Port A Game To Switch

Bassman_Q

I'm actually taking a computer graphics course at university right now and this problem is intriguing to me. My best guess would be that the game engine used in Rime is trying to load and update too many assets at once per frame, and so the frame rate is slowed to a crawl. As we know, the Switch hardware is powerful yet inferior to that of the PS4 and XBone, so trying to get the same or similar amount of assets rendered through the graphics pipeline on less powerful hardware is probably the main reason why the performance is so bad on the Switch. Seems like the devs need to tweak the engine they've made for it to run any better.

Re: Feature: Experiencing Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses & Pokémon: Symphonic Evolutions

I was lucky enough to see Zelda: SotG in San Diego in July 2015, and I remember having my breath taken away; the whole aspect of them syncing the live music to scenes from the games was ingenious and very well-done. I also thought that the arrangements were nearly perfect, and although I had already heard about half of them since they were included on the Skyward Sword 25th anniversary CD, it only made me appreciate the whole concert more.

I also saw a live Final Fantasy Symphony concert this past August (not Distant Worlds, unfortunately), and I felt that while it was definitely good, it didn't have that same spark as the Zelda concert, and so kinda fell flat. They didn't have any footage of the games whose music was being played, which I thought really added a lot of context to the Zelda concert for fans and non-fans alike. The arrangements were also a bit questionable, with many themes being mixed up to the point that they were barely recognizable. A few of the pieces they played were really good (like the movement from VI and a few piano pieces from X), but a lot of it was just okay.

So far, nothing has beaten SotG.

Re: Inchvilles Crowdfunding Campaign Goes Live, 3D Printed Figure Pricing Revealed

Bassman_Q

I agree with most of you that the game looks really bland, it kinda reminds me of Flipper (that DSiWare release from a couple years back) in terms of aesthetics, but without the fun gameplay. So yeah, really outdated graphics plus really bland-looking gameplay seems like a no-go for me. At least the concept of printing your own avatar seems fun, though the cost is pretty high for a single figure.

Re: Feature: Ten of Our Favourite DSiWare Games

Bassman_Q

Many of these are also on my list of favorite DSi games, namely the 3 Q-games titles, but I also really enjoyed Thorium Wars, Captain Sub, Escapee GO, A Kappa's Trail, Aura-Aura Climber, Spotto, Penguin Patrol, and Mario vs. DK. Ah, the memories!

I do have to disagree with Zenonia, though. IMO other than the hunger system I thought it was pretty generic and I got bored with it very fast.

Re: Review: Picross 3D Round 2 (3DS eShop)

Bassman_Q

Just as others have been saying, I'd be more inclined to buy it if the price was cheaper. The demo was promising, but I probably wouldn't pay more than $20 for it, mainly because I don't usually finish every puzzle in these types of games.

Re: Review: Poncho (Wii U eShop)

Bassman_Q

I've tried the game on Steam, and overall it's not bad, but also a bit sluggish and boring. Granted, I only got through the first level, but nothing about it seemed to grab my attention, aside from the pretty pixel art.

Re: Ninja Smasher!

Bassman_Q

Just saw this on the eShop today... It looks very promising! Almost like a Shovel Knight-lite but with ninjas instead of knights. I'll wait for a review but it looks pretty fun.

Re: Poll: What Other 'Classic Edition' Nintendo Systems Do You Want to be Released?

Bassman_Q

@BranJ0 I agree completely, I grew up primarily on the N64 and Gamecube along with a few gems on the SNES so the NES-era games are a bit too dated for me. It's hard to get into NES classics like the original Metroid or Zelda when so many of their conventions (such as password systems) are outdated, as well as the fact that their SNES sequels are a lot more approachable. As such, it's unlikely that I'll grab one of these NES boxes (despite the price being very reasonable), though I would snap up an SNES mini in a heartbeat!
