Back in 2020, Chibig released Summer in Mara, a slice-of-life farm sim game set in a tropical world and… well, for our money, it really wasn’t very good. It evidently sold well enough for Chibig to justify continuing the IP, but rather than make a sequel that built on the strengths and fixed the flaws of the original, the studio decided to make the successor a 3D platformer in the vein of Super Mario 3D Land or Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Bizarre as the choice may seem, it was clearly the right one, as Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara is a substantially better game than its predecessor and holds its own as a solid 3D platformer.
The story begins sometime after the events of Summer in Mara and centers around a competition staged by a local band of pirates wherein competitors must overcome a series of trials to become an official pirate. Koa naturally enters the competition, starting off another seafaring adventure as she island-hops and collects maps on her climb to be the very best. The narrative isn’t much to write home about, and it can get awfully text heavy in some places as you’re nagged by side characters grabbing Koa’s attention, but it mostly stays out of the way.
Before entering a level, the world map is presented to you as a small ocean you can traverse in Koa’s boat that’s vaguely reminiscent of the Great Sea from The Wind Waker. Islands and collectibles are scattered around this explorable space, and there’s even a cute treasure-hunting minigame that’s clearly inspired by the salvaging from Phantom Hourglass.
Each island is home to one to three levels that take only a few minutes each to clear, presenting you with concise platforming gauntlets that don’t overstay their welcome and give you just enough challenge to keep things entertaining. Breezing through these is pretty easy on its own, but those looking for more challenge can opt to snag the hidden collectibles in each stage and race against the clock for a gold medal. Koa is quick and responds quickly to controller inputs, and while she’s no Mario in terms of her moveset or general athleticism, we were still pleased by how responsive the platforming controls felt.
For its presentation, Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara sticks to a simplistic and somewhat tired art style, with the many nautical locales often feeling like up-rezzed versions of something you might find in a PS2 platformer. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though we wish a more ambitious, memorable visual style were attempted here. Luckily, it all unfolds at a silky smooth and completely solid 60 FPS, which goes a long way towards elevating the quality feel of the gameplay.
Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara isn’t exactly a bold reinvention of the 3D platformer, but it repeatedly proves that it’s got it where it counts. Smooth controls, decent level variety, and lots of collectibles all make this one a fairly easy recommendation, even if it is a little simplistic looking. If you're after 7-10 hours of solid, colourful 3D platforming, we’d suggest giving this one a shot.

Wow that's a compact review for a compact game.
Also sounds exactly like the vibe the trailer shows
also I kinda dig the looks, like a perfect summer adventure, definitely getting it
Edit: got it and played for over an hour. It's really nice, the jump rush combo is pretty satisfying and I dig the graphics and mostly the music. So far 8/10 from me
Makes me think of Frogun or Demon Turf.
I'm getting sick of these Tumblr/CalArts inspired characters in recent comics, TV shows, films, and video games. Hope these trend dies out as soon as possible.
i am starting to like these kind of games..
Didn't play Summer. This looks like a good $7.99 on sale pickup to me, as I'm big on platformers.
Talpa Games ('Mail mole') developed this game based on the IP from Chibig, so that explains the 3D platformer pivotting and the increase in quality. I want to give it a chance.
The visuals are seriously unpolished.
@RareFan Don't use the term made by a child molester like John K, please.
@MirrorFate2 Does this mean nobody is allowed to watch Ren and Stimpy? The guy did awful things, but pretty much everything we do, say, and use can probably be traced back to something/someone terrible. We still quote George Washington even though he was a known slave owner, for instance. It's fine if you don't like the CalArts term because it's a clichèd overgeneralization, but using the term doesn't inherently mean somebody is condoning the actions of a predator. Most people probably don't even know who John K is. Your heart is probably in the right place, but it's exhausting being this PC about everything all the time. It'll make your mental health a lot better when you don't constantly feel the need to walk on eggshells.
Occasionally, I find a small, simple 3D platformer to be refreshing. Poi was surprisingly enjoyable, and Tinykin was phenomenal.
If this is along the same lines, I might be interested.
I have this game wishlisted as I have a compulsive need to play every 3D platformer imaginable. (Yes, I'll even be playing Balan Wonderworld one of these days.) I had no idea this game was a sequel, though. Being a completely different genre would explain why.
@Not_Soos word up
It looks cute anyway.
The visuals look really cute to me. I've been trying to resist buying this game for awhile because I should finish other games and I would rather get this one on sale, but after reading the review my resistance is failing; I just love short cute little platformers like this.
@Not_Soos I share platformer compulsion. Balan was $8 the other day and I was extremely tempted to grab it even though I hated the demo. 😝
@sketchturner Poi is such an adorable game! I bought that one recently.
This game has been on my radar for a while now. Glad to see it got a fairly decent review here. Hopefully Mika and the Witch's Mountain (which I backed on Kickstarter, getting one of the higher tiers) will be just as good, if not better.
I believe the first had a demo, I was unimpressed. But with this review, I am very interested.
And Poi has been on my wish list forever, I gotta try it.
this is the sequel to the first game
@Not_Soos 2d and 3d platformer fan here, too. And I also know the day will come when I'll make the irrational decision to shell out a couple of bucks and play through Balan.
@lechugajr @FishyS If you have a PlayStation, it's on PS Plus, so you can play for free. I think it's also on Xbox Gold or whatever their service is called, but don't quote me on that.
@lechugajr @FishyS I can respect y'all being morbidly curious, but Balan is legitimately one of the worst games I've ever played from a major publisher 😂 By all means, get it to see what all the fuss was about, but please don't go into it expecting anything remotely competent. It cratered Yuji Naka's career for a reason!
@SwitchVogel
I thought Balan was fun. It certainly wasn't a good game by any means, but it has enough charm and whimsy to be a fun experience.
The only aspect of Balan I really did hate playing was the excessive QTEs. If literally everything about Balan was the same as it is, except with all the QTEs gone, I would actually consider replaying Balan in the future, just for fun and old time's sake. Yeah, I think the game is an interesting enough experience for that, despite the horrible power-up design, awful misguided control scheme, and bland level design. The art style and atmosphere are really quite enjoyable.
....but since it does have all those QTEs... nope, I'm never touching it again. What a shame.
Backed this up on Kickstarter, so glad it ended up being good, looking forward to playing it myself as soon as I have the time for it!
@JohnnyMind Same here this type of game doesn't need to be a TOTK or COD type and sometimes a pure fun games is what it takes to make it enjoyable. That's how I see it - for me I play TOTK game JPRPG/RPG games and these types to make gaming more fun and enjoyable.
@SwitchForce One of the things about gaming that I love is the incredible variety of games, there's something for everyone and every occasion!
