Topic: 3-player Monster Hunter - Which one?

Hey guys,

My son is saving up for his own Switch, and by then we will have three. I thought playing Monster Hunter with my two boys would be an excellent idea. Both Generations Ultimate and Rise are frequently on sale, so...

But I can't really find anything conclusive on which one is best. As said, we won't be joined by a 4th player, and some posts online suggest that some missions are really either 1-player or 4-player, what with difficulty ramping.

So I am here to question you all.

Which game should I get to play 3-player quests with my kids with? Generations Ultimate or Rise?

Any other relatively cheap game suggestions also welcome.

Thank you!

Rise has monster HP scaling depending on how many players there are during the hunt. GU didn't have this so sometimes multiplayer hunts can end up taking only minutes. even the final boss can be taken down in like 5 during multiplayer. lol (some event quests can be a nightmare even during multiplayer, though, and of course there are the deviants)

Both are good games regardless, though...

@Daniel36 - Has to be Rise, without a shadow of doubt! GU is a fine game, but absolutely showing its age. Rise looks and plays far more contemporary, and runs excellently on the Switch also.

MH is also a series well known for its challenging entry, and Rise is far more forgiving in terms of 'on-boarding' those new to the franchise

@CJD87 Thanks. And 3 players is fine?

@Joeynator3000 I don't think I'd mind bosses taking minutes, but the gameplay does seem clunkier than Rise. Though I hate that rope bug thing... then again, MH is silly regardless which version I pick.

Rise. Generations Ultimate is good, but since the quests don't scale, the hub quests are made for multiplayer effectively. So you'd be stuck with tougher fights in late game due to not having four players to play alongside you. Rise is also friendlier to get into while any game that came out before World is sorta clunkier to play (which has it's charms, but it's hostile to someone learning to play these games for the first time).

@Daniel36 yes up to 4 players is fine! You can set a lobby password, ensuring that no randoms will join.

Rise is an amazing game…
Funnily enough it is also slightly cheaper on eshop vs GU

Rise it shall be then. Waiting for a sale though.

@CJD87 You mention the lobby and password, does that mean I can't play it with my kids locally without acces to Online? I am not planning on purchasing an online membership as well.

@Daniel36 You can indeed play locally without online membership - just talk to the Courier cat and select local play, no Nintendo Online required, just need to be on the same wifi (assumedly you're all playing in same house, on same wifi network? If "yes" then no issue at all friend)

EDIT - This article explains it well. Be aware though that each player needs their own switch, and a version of the game. So 3 switches, 3 game cards (on digital versions of the game, 1 per switch)
