Square Enix's long-awaited release Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is out this week on the Switch and if you're planning on picking up a physical copy, you might want to read on...
It seems there are some notable differences with the box art and game cartridge. Once again, Japan gets the cool version - with a reversible cover. The inside sleeve features some classic-style artwork of Dragon Quest III, while the US and European version appears to just be a white page loaded with legal text.
Here's a look, courtesy of 'Nintendeal' on social media:
Although the local box art doesn't match the Japanese release, the West arguably gets the better game cartridge - featuring some actual detail instead of a logo and blank canvas.
If you are happy to wait for your physical copy of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, as mentioned by the source, the Japanese physical release does include "full English language support" including audio and subtitles - so you could always go with the Japanese version.

If Box Art Brawl taught us anything, it's that Japan doesn't, in fact, always get the coolest version.
I also prefer the Japanese cartridge. I like them clean and simple, which makes them easier to distinguish from one another since they’re so small.
That's honestly a d*** move from Square not to have included that in the western versions either. Why they decided to go with this awful new artwork when DQ was some of the best from Toryiama is dumbfounding.
Gonna decline my copy when it arrives later and will wait for the Japanese version.
Strangely SE's other big release Romancing Saga 2 has a reversible cover art, and it was only released a few weeks ago.
As much as I like the Japanese reversible cover art, I'm not paying extra for imports.
Wow, I love that reversible cover art. But can't we have that too...?
Really don't get why reversible covers should be exclusive to one region other than pure greed - in addition, if they really had to include the legal text (wonder why they don't have to for Japan, though) they should've added it as a piece of paper inside the case like companies usually do for download codes, ads etc.!
That sweet legal text on the inside of the case. Mmmmh. 🤌
Gotta love it.
@ManaOwls Yes, there's nothing better than a blank cover art with a legal text in the back.
"the West arguably gets the better game cartridge - featuring some actual detail rather instead of a logo and blank canvas"
You're not a fan of the game's logo in the Switch's menu too I take it. SE has been doing this for the west since the DS cartridges. At least they're consistent.
I wish more games had reversible covers instead of just “art” or just blank in the inside
The reversible art is the famicom cover and the super famicom cover. They probably just figure the Western audience won't recognize it and won't care. But I do recognize it and I do care!
A tribute to Toriyama would have been cool to have.
no, no, I think the page of legal text is way cooler. I'm almost definitely gonna be reversing mine as soon as I open it =P
Too bad the Japanese version doesn't come with an option to revert the censorship. I would've imported it if it did.

It's not just Kirby who's angry...
