Following its successful Kickstarter, Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus has finally locked in a release date for the Nintendo Switch and multiple other platforms - with Humble Games and developer Squid Shock confirming it will be arriving on 18th July 2024.
If you missed our previous coverage a few years ago, this "2.5D side-scrolling action-platformer" draws inspiration from Japanese folklore and features Metroidvania elements. Members of Another Metroid 2 Remake (AM2R) have also been involved in this project. Here's a bit more about it via the title's Steam listing:

Flow with acrobatic grace and agility through a mysterious world of myth and legend in Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus, a colorful hand-drawn adventure inspired by Japanese folklore.
Undertake a mystical journey as Bō, a celestial blossom (fox tentaihana) descended from the heavens to fulfill a mysterious ancient prophecy. Use your legendary bō staff to bounce and glide fluidly through an otherworldly realm of hand-drawn, dreamlike landscapes, strange and adorable yokai, and massive monsters summoned from ancient legends of Japan.
Explore a diverse and interconnected world in a 2.5D side-scrolling action-platformer with Metroidvania elements. Journey to a haunted castle, a thriving Japanese-inspired metropolis, and many more strange and wondrous places—then find ways to travel back and fully explore newly unlocked paths and surprises.

Now this is a metroidvania that looks worth my time to play. I love the art style, I love the variance in gameplay, I love the folklore theme, and I love the somewhat obscure Kurosawa reference. Basically this game just looks amazing.
THIS is what a hellboy game should be like.
Love the art - the combination of beautiful with cute and funny mixed in looks remarkably good. And the platforming looks fun. I'll definitely keep an eye out for this one.
This looks awesome, just saw this game yesterday in the 2024 upcoming games. Fingers crossed for a physical version ASAP.
I din't get it, why 2,5D...?? From what I see, this is totally 2D. Prince of Persia is 2,5D, Metroid Dread is 2,5D. But this...? XD
It looks fun though, it's Hollow Knight meets Okami. Will keep an eye on it.
Art style looks distinctive. Gameplay reminds me more of Ori than HK.
I’m generally put off though by names that are Random word: Something of the something
@the_beaver Honestly the distinction is really stupid. Even Dread is 2D. You move in a 2D plane that's what matters, I don't understand why it's so important to differentiate between 3D models and 2D art that it needs to be in the name. And it's not like a "2.5D" game plays different from a game with 2D art. On top of that, half a dimension doesn't make any sense.
But yeah, this is definitely 2D.
Looks awesome so as long as it's just as good as it looks I'm definitely getting this at some point!
@BongoBongo I really enjoyed The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time, personally.
2D, 2.5D, meh. Don't care. Game looks beautiful and fun with an interesting world.
@LikelySatan that doesn’t really fit the mould as the bit before the colon isn’t just a random word, it’s the name of the first game in the series.
The Ori games would actually be a good example of a time it worked.
Absolutely lovely aesthetics, I'm sucker for Japanese folklore
waiting for reviews to point out best features as "cons"
please be "anachronic with no 1 button win option"
This looks really, really good.
@Octane I understand that 2,5D is basically a game with 2D mechanics within a 3D environment. Like the last Donkey Kong Country games or the ones I mentioned.
It feels like a 2D game though, which is what matters.
@BongoBongo got ya. I don't really bristle against naming conventions I guess. Besides maybe the XBOX One. That didn't confuse me, I just saw through what they were doing and vomited inside. To a lesser extent the WiiU, but no one I knew was confused by that one.
Generic shovelware meant to catch dads and idiots because of SEO gets on my nerves. Like "Call of Warfare: Extraction Royale" or something.
This game looks really, really cool. Hopefully I'll get around to playing it (provided it ends up anywhere near as good as it looks)
Between this and (fingers crossed) Silksong I think I'll be getting my fill on metroidvanias this year 👍
Ahhh yeah, nice to see this one finally getting a release date .
It is giving me mucho Muramasa-vibes, combined with a fair bit of Hollow Knight's special mechanics. I just hope (looking slightly resentful and specifically at some parts of the gameplay) that I don't continuously have to hastily run and jump through all these beautiful artistic painting-esce environments all the time...and that it runs well .
@BongoBongo I don't know if you did this already but I recommend reading a bit about the lore the artist has created around his protagonist (-Bo-), to me the name of this game is a very good example of a well-thought-out, beautiful title that still leaves enough room to my own imagination, unlike the more straight-forward titles such as Mario Odyssey or the more random titles such as Unicorn Overlord (a) .
@the_beaver I understand. I just find it weird that the 2D platformer genre is the only one where people feel the need to differentiate the pixel/flat sprites from the 3D models. Especially because it doesn't even affect the gameplay at all.
Like, even within RPGs you could specify top-down or 3D, and that would change how the game feels and plays, but it's not even in the name. People don't say 3D-RPGs and 2D-RPGs.
Looks awesome. It's obvious they put a ton of care and effort into the visuals.
@Octane @the_beaver I've always thought of 2.5D as being mostly 2D with some 3D mechanics; things like switching between the foreground and background or having the character walk around curves/corners while you can still only press left/right. Can't say whether or not it's used correctly in this instance.
This one looks fun. Started to get so sick of the flooding of metroidvanias and a lot sucked, but this one looks really nice from the art style to gameplay. Will definitely check this one out after having ignored this genre for the last year or 2.
After a couple games early this year have sort of bummed me out, I’m just going to wait to see how this one turns out. It’s been a weird year where I’ve already bought most of the year’s wishlist since practically everything launched in February, but oddly enough, the game that impressed me most so far this year is one I thought looked sort of iffy in Prince of Persia. I think this year is teaching me to wait and see how things turn out rather than jumping on a bunch of stuff that looks like it would be great. This one looks like it would be great, so hopefully it is!
Even though the platforming looks solid and I like the Japanese folklore theme, I unfortunately won't be getting this because it's a metroidvania. But hopefully it'll be successful when it launches in July.
Sure has the look of a game I'd like to play. Added to my list.
Yes! The artwork draws me in automatically. My only wish is that it is not brutally difficult. It doesn’t appear too difficult. It just looks so good!
‘Hand-drawn’ means I’ll probably buy this even if I won’t finish it.
This game looks absolutely stunning. But I'm not good at fast paced and/or very precise gameplay.
looks beautiful and appealing to me, I also liked AM2R so will prolly get this - I Hope it gets a physical release.
DAY ONE. Grew up with Okami and was a huge fan of Sakuna, so this is an instant buy!
Always wanted to get into Hollow Knight, but the environment was always a little too grimdark for my tastes. This however is exactly what I needed!
