In a game full of memorable moments, one of Mario Wonder's more out-there sequences has to be the 'Piranha Plants on Parade' musical number. This Wonder effect completely took us by surprise on our first playthrough and has certainly stuck in our heads ever since. Fortunately, it looks like we were not alone in our admiration as some talented players have managed to recreate the musical moment in Super Mario Maker 2.
In case the sequence in question has slipped your mind, this is the moment where your standard platforming level turns into an all-singing and (some) dancing routine thanks to some very well-choreographed Piranha Plants. How exactly could that exist in Mario Maker? you might ask. Well, a couple of different ways, actually.

The above video from YouTube channel BeardBear shows two different methods that have been used to bring the trippy Wonder sequence to life. The first from user arnnar (54D-77K-SQF) is somewhat more faithful to the game itself, with Piranha Plants popping up all over the shop while the music plays — we are big fans of how the build managed to get a plant walking in this one. The second, on the other hand, is a musical extravaganza from ラガーばくはつしとけ (YSQ-D62-3PF) which, while it might not replicate the visuals to a T, manages to create Wonder's backing track in real-time. Woah.
Two different approaches, yes, but both equally impressive. We still have our fingers crossed that Nintendo is planning to drop Wonder's visuals into the empty Mario Maker 2 game-style slot (as unlikely as that is), but until then, we'll have to be satisfied with bringing a bit of Wonder to the game in other, more creative ways like this.
Which of the above recreations is your favourite? Let us know in the comments.

(゚o゚〃) Just imagine, first the march, then the entire game!
Great job all around!
It's so impressive when people make musical levels in Mario Maker. I tried to do something like it once, but it's waaaayyy more fiddly than I had the patience for. I'm not surprised that people want to recreate the wonderful SMB Wonder levels in Mario Maker! They're really fun!
I wonder if Nintendo took inspiration from all of those amazing and intricate Mario Maker musical levels when they were making SMB Wonder? Then again, Nintendo did put the music note blocks in Mario Maker to begin with, so they must have already had musical levels in mind from the beginning... hm.
There are so many thing in Mario Wonder that I swear were inspired by Mario Maker levels; from the direct things, like the multiplayer death sounds, multiple checkpoints in one level, or the star run levels; to things like the Jump Jump Jump climbing level, which would have fit perfectly as a Mario Maker level. I think the Mario Maker series was a time for Nintendo to look at what fans did with Mario, and create new ideas with it, and that’s part of how the game became so successful.
If you walk on musical blocks in Super Mario Wonder, turn off the sound on the game and listen carefully to your switch controller. You’ll be able to hear the musical notes come from your controller, a device that has no speakers.
Definitely prefer the first one if only because I always just find it annoying whenever I get thrown into a level where the purpose isn't to play it and it just plays itself. Like, I definitely respect the craftsmanship, it probably took ages to do, but if I randomly loaded into it I'd just be annoyed.
These are fun, but imagine what will be made in Mario Maker 3 with Wonder theme. 😀
I don't care what anyone says, Super Mario Maker 2 is vastly superior to the Wii U original. The first game felt like so much missed potential, and the sequel added just about everything I thought was missing: new themes like snow and desert, a world maker, additional boss enemies (the Koopalings, Boom Boom), new power-ups, even the slopes people wouldn't shut up about for some reason. Lots of other features I never would've expected too, like Phanto from SMB2, night mode, quality of life features like being able to adjust the autoscroll, multiplayer co-op and races... it's all great stuff!
People will complain about the amiibo costumes, but being restricted to the 8-bit aesthetic really limited their appeal to me when all the other themes were just so much more visually interesting. Being able to put Sonic or Mega Man in a level was neat to an extent, but it's not like the characters played like their respective movesets, and when you get hit and lose the mushroom, the illusion is broken. They were neat, but I don't think their absence in SMM2 makes it an objectively worse game--far from it. The button controls feel pretty intuitive when you get used to them, and if you just have to use a touch screen, you can buy a stylus. People call the game disappointing, but I think SMM2 was the perfect sequel, honestly. The only downside was the online performance.
I haven't played this game in ages because I just know that games with editors like this will take up more time than I can afford. But with that said, I do constantly think about how much I'd like to go back to it and finish the Super Mario World spiritual successor I was making for my older brother who grew up with an SNES but hasn't done a lot of gaming since.
I would say Super Mario Maker 2 is one of the very best first-party games of the Switch life cycle; easily in the top 5 for me, honestly, along with other gems like Smash Ultimate, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Metroid Dread, and Pokémon Legends Arceus. Dare I say, it's even better than Super Mario Bros. Wonder. I'm very glad Wonder exists though, because it scratches a 2D Mario itch that Mario Maker doesn't quite satisfy. But MM2 still deserves more love!
@FishyS I guess there's still a lot of untapped potential with a 2D Mario level editor, but at this point, I'm more interested in a 3D Mario Maker. Especially if the Switch successor is as powerful as rumors are suggesting, it should be able to render lots of 3D objects no problem. Being able to make linear 3D Land / World levels as well as more sandbox Super Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy levels where you can hide stars in the environment and maybe even program NPC's with objectives to complete in exchange for Stars would be a dream come true.
I figured it was only a matter of time before they starting doing that. Just like fan-made Super Mario YouTube videos are now including Super Mario Wonder elements.
This is INCREDIBLE!
Mario Wonder feels like it was made in Mario Maker 2.
@Not_Soos Halo’s Forge mode but for 3D Mario!
Both impressive in their own way indeed, kudos to the creators of these levels!
