The latest Japanese charts are in and it's yet another impressive showing for the Nintendo Switch with a total of six games representing the platform in the top ten. Coming in at the top, we've got Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, which frankly leaves the competition in the dust, selling a total of 189,931 copies.
Next up is Octopath Traveler II, Square Enix's RPG sequel, which also gets off to a pretty great start with a total of 53,995 copies sold, coming in at number two. The only other new entry for the Switch this week is Ark: Survival Evolved, which is published by Spike Chunsoft in Japan and managed to bring in 13,200 in sales for its debut week.
Elsewhere, Sega had a good showing with its newly released Like a Dragon: Ishin! on PS4 and PS5, coming in at number four and five and selling 35,897 and 31,439 copies respectively.
Here's a look at the top ten:
- [NSW] Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe (Nintendo, 02/24/23) – 189,031 (New)

Over on the hardware front, the PS5 is still dominating, reaching an impressive 77,281 in sales this week. Meanwhile, the PS5 Digital Edition also managed to sell a respectable 14,448 to put it in third place behind the Switch OLED Model.
Poor Xbox just can't catch a break in Japan though, right..?

Wow, PS5 sales really plummeting Switch sales once the stocks is available.
I wish I can play my PS5 games now.
I want a PS5 machine. ☺
Meanwhile in Japan, Hogwarts is getting stomped on. It’s more a NA Twitch streamer showcase game that will die down eventually. Kirby Return To Dreamland is a classic. Nice to see it return, and dominate!
@Anti-Matter stock is starting to become a normal thing. I get alerts online far more often than I did in the past.
Happy to see Kirby back on the #1 spot! He has a huge fanbase over there in Japan, so it makes sense for RTDL DX to completely smash the competition.
@Anti-Matter plummeting?
1/4th of Japanese population already has a switch. I think that’s the reason less switch systems are being sold. Market saturation. It’s impressive the switch is still selling 60.000 every week after 6 years on the market. Has not much to do with the PS5.
Well it seems the whole Japan already own all the Switch consoles they could ever want so I could see why the PS5 is gaining momentum but if this rumor of a Switch 2 (a more gimmicky model, not a successor or a performance upgrade) is to believe then I guess Japan is just saving their money for the next model instead.
@Friendly and even with market saturation, we're still looking at 60k+ sales for a console that's turning SIX tomorrow.
@Friendly you are totally right, you would expect a new console to out sell an old console, yet the Switch keeps on selling good numbers.
Close to 200k copies in Japan only is wonderful for Kirby's first week. I'd say it's easily a one-million-copy game worldwide in the first week. It was third in the UK, so that's a good reference
I'll be interested to see how Metroid Prime does over there. With the digital version being out for a bit and Japan usually being a bit colder toward Metroid in general, I'm not expecting crazy numbers, but it'll be cool to see the difference between say that and Kirby in different regions.
@nhSnork mostly 50.000 last month
Love to see Kirby doing so well! Not bad for Octopath Traveler II, especially on Switch.
Again, happy to see the PlayStation 5 finally selling well, but the Switch is far from dead considering even this weak it sold around 60k all models combined!
Switch OLED will hit four million in Japan within the next two weeks, impressive. Credit where it’s due, the PS5 has been racking up excellent hardware sales so far this year.
Im guessing most new PS5 users are buying digitaly.
@johnedwin and 200.000 per week during the pokemon craze the month before that
@nocdaes much better results for Kirby in Japan 😜
The hardware sales over the last few months show that we are in a transition and that Switch is on the downside of the mountain.
That doesn't mean the sky is falling, but it does mean that Nintendo really should have a new console releasing next year if they want to keep the momentum going.
77 2ds sales. Gotta love those guys
Great numbers for Kirby. Octopath II on Switch did solid numbers too.
@cyrus_zuo they shouldn’t transition too quickly though, or launch a system with backwards compatibility. Software is still selling and making Nintendo millions of money$$$
@TheBigBlue Hogwarts Legacy Sells 12 Million Copies truley getting stomped on lol
PS5 sales starting to hit their stride, over 60K for Switch just as it's about to turn 6 yrs is amazing. Worldwide 120 million Switches is simply superb. When PS5 reaches that then a conversation can take place regarding any criticism of Switch sales... 🤣
@Anti-Matter Be interesting to see if PS5 is selling 60K units in it's 7th year.
@BANJO lol, great minds think alike!
@Anguspuss hey, you know what I mean. I mean sales this week in Japan. I know 12 mil is beyond impressive. But the game is in 6th place in the chart this week. That’s great, but not as good as it’s top position since it released. That’s all
Kirby did amazing.
Octopath did way less then expected when the first game [which was exclusive to Switch initially] launched at 100k+ with a much smaller install base to work with.
Octopath 2 on Switch barely did 50k+ and even the same day launch on PlayStation platforms barely moved anything in comparison since combined is still notably less then the Octopath 1 launch. Not good when you are looking at a series growth perspective.
@Anti-Matter yes it’s very “plummeting”. Meanwhile OLED alone outsold the PS5 with a still sizable gap [one good month for Sony doesn’t negate the YEARS of ground Switch dominated] in Japan despite the OLED release being AFTER when PS5 launched.
@TheBigBlue i agree and my kids been annoying me for past 3 weeks if we can get new kirby game. Then their mum says didnt i play that on wii before we had kids
Congratulations to PS4 for outselling XBSX again!
I just picked up Metroid prime remastered physical from CeX. It was still wrapped and they had a box of them. I’ve suspected that CeX had been getting new Nintendo stock from some where.
@Friendly old news
I played the demo, but i did not like. Boring game to me.
Maybe one day i´ll buy a Kirby game to me daughter. She is just a baby right now.
But, i cannot play kirby games, too boring...i prefer to sleep.
@Anti-Matter TBH i got a PS5 since launch and i played it like 40 hours top. I find myself playing my ehanced PS4 games on it, but the PS5 exclusive library is still thin. Switch is turning 6 yo Tomorrow, it is Incredible that it still sell that strong in a country where 25% of the population already own one
@F_Destroyer
I collected 3rd party multi console games for my PS5 such as Kao the Kangaroo, The Smurfs Mission Vileaf, Instant Sports +, Lemon Cake, Bunny Park, etc (all kids games) including Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart as the only 1st party Sony game I like for PS5.
No gamer with a brain is buying a 3rd party only console 😂 (Xbox). With zero exclusives to their name since 2015 and having gone 3rd party officially in 2017, and repeatedly confirming time and time again (and actually sticking to their word, which is 90% lies) that all their games are playable outside of Xbox, it's not surprising smart gamers aren't buying an Xbox.
189.000 ? It is not obliterating anything.
12.000.000 Hogwarts Legacy is obliterating.
@Otoemetry Haha yes, that's a solid week 1 for sure!
@Rykdrew A tad (a lot) disingenuous comparing global sales with a single country lol. Kirby's first week sales thrashed Hogwash's total sales so far. But nothing to lose sleep over.
I really thought Hogwarts Legacy would do way better than that over there. Harry Potter is still very popular in Japan. I suppose a lot of people are waiting for the PS4 or Switch version, though I fear the Switch port will be a truly miserable experience.
Got to love all the wannable "analytics" saying that this is proof we're getting a Switch successor or that Nintendo should put out new hardware just because sales take a small dip.
Never mind the fact that for new console we know about it years in advance and months leading to it's actual release, but sure let's put on our tinfoil hats and act like the Switch 2 will release out of nowhere or even launching alongside Botw 2 like some people unironically claimed.
@iLikeUrAttitude If Nintendo can release a system capable of miracle next gen ports later this year and gets Call of Duty, then Nintendo will find themselves competing against Sony and Microsoft in no time. Seems the internet is hell bent on making them do so lol.
That's awesome to see! That means it's probably already reached 1 million worldwide.
I imagine Nintendo is in a conundrum with a new console. The Wii U failed. The switch took off. Do they do the usual Nintendo thing and innovate something crazy, or just make a switch 2?
@GrailUK "@Rykdrew A tad (a lot) disingenuous comparing global sales with a single country lol. Kirby's first week sales thrashed Hogwash's total sales so far. But nothing to lose sleep over."
About the part in bold. You meant Japan only, right?
When I quoted 12,000,000 in sales of Hogwarts Legacy, I was quoting the "obliterated" hyperbole about every other game.
At this very moment in time, this is the game this hyperbole can be used with.
180,000 in the first week in Japan is not a big number.
Splatoon 3 sold 2.64 million units in the first week (Japan only).
I thought the word "obliterated" was exaggerated advertising. It sounds like a salesman trying to sell the game anyway. Just this!
@Rykdrew I think the context was just this week in Japan to be fair Either your analysing computer needs a repair or you need a comfier armchair No denying Hogwash's is a hit in the west.
@GrailUK I see what you did there.
@FirstEmperor O.<
@GrailUK sorry for my bad english (i am trying)
You are right. We need to compare the same country the same context.
I just found the "order of magnitude" of 180,000 too small for the adjective "obliterate".
I didn't understand what this means: "Either your analysing computer needs a repair or you need a comfier armchair"...nor what "hogwash" is
@Rykdrew Ah, well your English is pretty good man!
