The latest UK charts for boxed game sales is now in and what we are seeing this week paints quite a different picture to what has come before.
It should come as no surprise that Nintendo doesn't hold the top spot this week. The release of God of War: Ragnarök was always going to shake things up a little as Sony's highly-anticipated (and much-nominated) sequel claims the top spot.
What follows is something of an off week for Nintendo (if you can really call landing five out the ten top-selling games an 'off week'). All of the classics hang on in there including the likes of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Nintendo Switch Sports, while Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope falls out of the top ten into 13th place.
Perhaps more noteworthy, however, is the strong showing for Sonic Frontiers on Switch. The game lands in fourth place this week with 34% of sales on Switch making it the game's second most-popular console behind the PS5 on 40% (Xbox Series took home 14% while PS4 gained 12%).
This percentage isn't too shocking - Switch remains to be one of the most-bought consoles week on week - though the reports of Switch performance issues with Frontiers had us wondering whether people would be deterred from picking up a copy. The answer: they were not.
With all that chit chat out of the way, here's your look at the week's UK gaming charts:

Seems odd to have links to the PlayStation games but not all of the switch games.
I'm glad that GoW Ragnarok beat CoD, hopefully Pokemon will do the same next week.
@Ryu_Niiyama They're linked in the text prior to the chart table itself. We link all games in the first instance with no repeats, and we try to link to our sister sites Push Square and Pure Xbox where possible too.
The push square review for sonic frontiers also mentions lots of pop in so no real surprise is the switch version struggles from the same
How is 34 % of Sonic Sales on switch strong? The Switch has a userbase that is a lot bigger then the PS5. I thought it would do a lot better. I wonder how sales where in comparison to order Sonic games.
The top 3 that I really hate about.
Oh, well...
I'm glad I don't play games like mainstream audiences.
@Tryffel Yes, I came to say the same thing. Install base of Switch is significantly higher than the PS5, especially in the UK. I'd expect closer to 60% if the sales figures were OK, and potentially even in the high 70s if the sales were good.
This suggests a slow start for the blue blur... and the sales curve rarely improves if it starts poorly... even though it is true to say gifting season will be significant for this title (but so is FIFA and COD as always!)
@uptownsoul so it turns out install base is tricky to get an accurate view on, but it seems PS5 in the UK is up to around 2 million now. UK is not the strongest EU market for Switch, looks like France is, potentially followed by UK and then likely Germany close behind. We know France has 25% of all EU sales, so we can estimate UK must be around the 15%-20% mark of all EU sales. So UK install base is around the 4m-5m mark.
Actually not as huge a gap as I imagined(!) But still very significant. If Sonic Frontiers has sold well... it means a LOT of PS5 owners bought the game. This IS a possibility given the slim pickings (not a dig, a fact), but Switch sales are surely lower than SEGA would have wanted.
Fourth position place for a 4/10 (according to Nintendolife) game... oh the irony.
What do you mean by this? 4 of the top ten are Nintendo exclusives.
Has everyone forgotten about the Wii U years?
@nocdaes Yeah I noticed around it's release on Amazon it was quite behind GoW and Pokemon Scarlet & Violet.
I wonder if the inconsistent quality has finally caught up with the series and people are actually holding off on pre-ordering Sonic.
Especially with the cost of living crisis and Sega trying to sell Sonic at full price rather than £30 like Forces. I think people rather a safe bet like GoW than roll the dice with Sonic.
I'll probably get a PS5 the moment they become available again just for this new God of War so there you go.
Frontiers had higher opening UK sales than Forces, and that was a budget release lol
Feels weird to see people claiming this as a slow start, when the AAA price point has probably made this the most successful Sonic game revenue-wise since Unleashed
I assumed Sonic failed. Why is it already $20 off a week after release?
@nocdaes "slim pickings" on what? PS5? God of War and Gotham Knights just released
@Anti-Matter each to their own. However recognising a game for what it is, not necessarily what we like is a balance.
@Anti-Matter,
Don't worry, like I say a lot on this site, do not worry about the people that do not like the same things, it's not worth it.
Man, poor Sonic. I wish it would’ve ran past CoD and FIFA, if only for one week. The game deserves better than the discourse it’s getting.
Wait, so 40% on ps5, 14% on Series S/X, 34% on switch and 12% on ps4.
So not one copy sold on xbox one?
@UltimateOtaku91 Xbox One/Series games are released together as one. You get an Xbox case that will list both consoles on it with Smart Delivery at the top. Compared to PS4 and PS5 which have separate versions of the game
@Bunkerneath it’s actually five are exclusive to Switch, as Minecraft at number ten is actually the Switch edition
NL: "What follows is something of an off week for Nintendo"
From Game Industry Biz:
"We also saw an increase in Switch game sales with Mario Kart 8: Deluxe (No.5) up 34%, Nintendo Switch Sports (No.6) up 19%, Splatoon 3 (No.8) up 22%, Animal Crossing: New Horizons (No.9) up 50% and Minecraft on Switch up 42%."
If you have the sales breakdown of Sonic Frontiers I would assume you also have the information above which makes your comment about an off week for Switch games frankly strange.
People surprised cuz ragnarok is selling well, Did people forget ragnarok came out for the ps4 too?
@Anti-Matter You're so cool
@Lordplops And the same holds true for for some 9 and 10/10 games according to them. Scores might be anything but a universal truth. And they can be sooooo harmful!
@Ryu_Niiyama agree, I love nintendo but not sure nintendolife do.
34% of UK Sonic Frontier owners have bought the worst version.
I know sales do not equal quality, and we'll see if it has legs, but .... 4/10???
Target, Best Buy, Amazon, GameStop, and Walmart all had PS5+Ragnarok bundles widely available starting last week in the US. In fact when I went to pick up Ragnarok on Sunday the GameStop still had consoles available. Was there a product drop in the UK as well? Could explain Forbidden West jumping up as PS5’s de facto “may as well” first game.
@nocdaes there was news recently about how Switch has only just overtaken the Xbox One in the UK, dunno if that helps figure out a total install base?
Edit: yep the article was from the 4th, also it confirmed the Switch hasn't even overtaken the PS3 here yet! If ever proof were needed that the UK is PlayStation territory here be it.
I'm sure Kratos will find himself in second next week.
@Anti-Matter Fair enough for CoD and FIFA. If you've played one, you've played them all. But you're 100% missing out if you don't try any of the God of War games.
Frontiers runs awful on all systems. I picked it up on PS5 because I was worried about Switch's performance, and it's still awful. Yeah, it runs smoothly but the pop-in is unacceptable and the graphics are mediocre. Still having fun with it but it certainly looks very unpolished.
@DJP- God of War is overrated. I played the first 2, Chains of Olympus on PSP, and I got the one prior to Ragnarok. Nothing special about any of them, Kratos is a horrible character and the games are just a wish fulfilment fantasy for weak, nerdy boys who wish they could violently beat up others the way they never will irl. Skip them and you miss out on nothing at all.
