Update #2 [Tue 25th Oct, 2022 15:30]: And here's Part 2! This is the second half of Prologue: Converge, which leads to Sonic and friends trying to get to Starfall Islands in time to stop Dr. Eggman.
We won't find out more about this scheme until Sonic Frontiers releases next month, but we do still have an animated short to come. So we'll keep you up to date.
Update [Tue 18th Oct, 2022 15:30 BST]: Part 1 of the comic is now live on Twitter! The official Sonic the Hedgehog account shared the four pages earlier today — all with alt text — so you can now see just what happens before the events of Sonic Frontiers.
The four pages shared have plenty of amusing references to past Sonic titles, particularly from Dr. Eggman.
Head on over to the official Twitter account or have a little read below:
Original article [Fri 14th Oct, 2022 16:00 BST]: Sega is speeding up on Sonic Frontiers info — although, has it really ever slowed down since the start of this summer? And today, the company has revealed that November's open-zone Sonic game will be getting a two-part digital comic and an animation, both of which are prequels.
Part 1 of the comic, called Sonic Frontiers - Prologue: Convergence, will be available online next Tuesday — 18th October — with Part 2 following not long after, though no date was specified. The prequel animation also doesn't have a specific release date yet, but Sega did say "soon", so maybe it won't be much longer!
Both plan to show what happened prior to the events of Sonic Frontiers and the animation was teased as part of Sega's Sonic Central broadcast back in June.
For now, Sega has given us a look at the comic's art, which has been drawn by Archie regular Evan Stanley. And, as always, she's done a fantastic job!
Sonic Frontiers is weeks away from its 8th November release date — geez, slow down, it's been a busy season! And yesterday, we got a good look at the game's combat and skill tree, and there's a lot more going on than in your average blue hedgehog game!

A prequel before even the game released ?
After the DLC announcement now this.
Not sure if the game will be okay or it might be have a lot of issues like Sonic Colors before and the merchandise and animation announcement was like a distraction for us when the actual game might have some issues.
You lost me at digital, I love real physical books, so a digital comic is a real downer

Why not include that story in the game..... This seems to happen more lately with games, the complete story scattered across multiple types of entertainment. I hope this isn't the next big thing developers are going to do.
Looks awesome! I love Evan Stanley's art style I love her works in the IDW series. They ought to have a place where we can view the comic and animations in game, like the vault room in Generations.
Prequel comics to games are kinda common so I don't mind, but they should honestly add them in the games as some sort of bonus feature.
I will check this one out as I'm a fan of Stanley's works in the IDW series.
They did this with Sonic Forces too, and it was 4 parts, with 3-4 pages per part. It's primarily to hype up the game and get people excited.
If it's digital it means it can be included within the game, right?
I'm really not a big fan of the idea of having a prequel or an explanation told through different media.
I think this is cool, but they HAVE to release it physically someday. Even if it is just on the game disc.
Coool... this is like the Sonic Boom marketing all over again.
What could possibly go wrong?!?
..
.... at least we got that great cartoon, though, right?
I enjoyed the prequel comic to Sonic Forces, but it was kind of necessary since Forces' story was so lacking. This has me a little concerned, Frontiers gameplay looks awesome but we haven't really seen any cutscenes that are more than a few seconds. I hope there is an actual story within the game.
@LexKitteh It will be much more story driven, since it has the writer of the IDW comics as the writer.
According to Ian Flynn (writer of these comics and Frontiers) these prologue’s are just “extra gravy” on top of the existing in game story, which makes it sound like they aren’t actually required in order to fully enjoy/understand the story like the Forces comics were. Which is what this advertising strategy should comprise of.
Speaking of, Team Sonic Racing had a comic and an animation, with neither being of any importance to the overall story.
@Anti-Matter
Honestly who really cares that much about having prologue’s and dlc announced before the game when they’re literally all free. I especially don’t see the issue with letting people experience the prologue’s before diving into the game, that makes perfect sense. The only little thing wrong with free bonus content is that they could’ve just been put in the game.
I also don’t know how you see this as a distraction from bad quality when so many people have played the game by now (including Sakurai) and most have reported great over all quality. Sonic Colours Ultimate didn’t have any kind of demo, so it’s issue’s couldn’t have been picked up until release.
@Chocobo_Shepherd They didn't for Sonic Forces, so it is unlikely they will repeat that here. However, nothing is stopping you from using a printer to make your own copies.
there better be green grass and blue skies, that was a huge part of what Ive seen from the game so far
I'm so stoked, haven't been this excited for a Sonic game since SA1 in the fifth grade lol
After reading this first part I think it is definitely safe to say that these prologue’s are just fun little extra’s and are not important to the overall plot.
All this prologue comic has got me wondering, if is the final boss is going to be Eggman in a fourth repeat of the Nega Wisp Armor.
Oh cubot and orbot...
Ok I think the second part gives us an idea of the story. It's probably gonna be somewhat similar to Sonic Heroes. Eggman tries to advance the intelligence of some of his biggest and best creations, but it goes rouge on him and thus it has to be stopped by both parties. Even though it is similar, the concept can definitely be taken into new directions, since Metal Sonic in Heroes was focused more on trying to over take and tried live past him from CD in trying to be the one true Sonic. Still can't wait for Frontiers
I have no clue what's going on in the Sonic story at this point (didn't finish Sonic Forces).
Do the stories have continuation or is each new entry a clean slate, more or less? 🤔
@Bizzyb they're all kinda clean slate, though not on a Zelda timeline scale.
woo hoo! love it! can't wait for this game!
It ended up being just a nice little plot tease, so not reading them will be completely fine.
@Bizzyb
Some of the early games do have continuity, and some newer games reference older games, but every games story exists on it’s own.
