Gamescom Opening Night Live is taking place soon, and ahead of the showcase hosted by Geoff Keighley, Sega has been hyping up a new Sonic Frontiers trailer that will be airing at the event.
Now, in another new screenshot, fans have been formally introduced to Koco - a "lil" creature that will likely feature throughout Sonic's new "open-zone" adventure. We've previously seen whatever these characters are in IGN's "world premiere" gameplay trailer.
The introduction of this character via the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account has raised all sorts of responses. Some common ones seem to be asking for Chao to come back, while other Sonic fans have made reference to Zelda's Korok, and even Kodama tree spirits from Japanese folklore.
In Nintendo's open-world Zelda game, Breath of the Wild, Link is required to search the entire game's map for Korok high and low. It's unclear at this stage exactly what role "Koco" will play in Sonic Frontiers.
What do you think of this new character? Looking forward to the new Sonic Frontiers "world premiere" taking place at ONL? Tell us down below.

Koco is officially the most exciting thing about Sonic Frontiers. I hope they walk by just wobbling back and forth.
Sonics rock version of a korok
Finally! A new trailer! Please have a release date!
These guys have actually been around for a while.
@Lady_rosalina I was thinking exactly the same, its just a rock version of a Korok.
Not that it will stop me from getting the game, but my opinion of it is slowly getting worse the more they try to hype it
looks and sounds like breath of the wild
This is so hilariously shameless. How does the IP even exist at this point? Who is still buying these games...and why?? The quality ranges from mediocre to hot garbage and they haven't done anything original in the last decade+. If they DO try something new, it ends up being terrible or half-baked and if they don't, they just make a shameless Nintendo rip off.
I legitimately don't understand. This is just The Legend of Sonic: Speed of the Wild.
@Dinglehopper "Who is still buying these games...and why??"
People like me who find the games fun? (Well, Sonic Forces, Mania and Team Racing - I didn't like Colours) Your opinion on the quality of the games is just that, your opinion...
But I agree with you that this one is shameless in it's inspiration from Breath of the Wild! I wish it had been set in the Mystic Ruins from Sonic Adventure if they wanted to do a big outdoor space instead.
This character reminds me of the forest spirits from Princess Mononoke. Everything in this game seems to take inspirations from other games and media, except from Sonic. Breath of the Wild, Shadow of the Colossus, Xenoblade, Princess Mononoke, etc. And if they add something from Sonic, it is the same recycled ideas to remind people of Sonic's glory days in the 90s.
Not a stone korok to find botw-style at all (not a clone at all either)
@Dinglehopper @Bunkerneath @Ara Google "kodama". It's a Mononoke kodama head without a body. You should also see other kodama pics that show the inspiration for the koroks. This "Nintendo invented everything" mentality is bizarre. They didn't even create things like Birdo or Shy Guys, let alone ancient Japanese spirits.
Of course it's a rip off, if anyone is expecting anything creative or unique or even just above average in a Sonic game then you're setting yourself up for generations of disappointment (take it from me). If this game had anything of real value to show you they'd have shown it by now, they're using the tried and true salesman tactic of feeding you very little and making you use your imagination to fill in the blanks, getting your hopes up, before crushing them with vapid tedium. Maybe it will surprise us all, but based on what prior evidence? Why get excited before reviews?
@Matroska no but Nintendo made a wildly successful first attempt at an open world game that just coincidentally had creatures that looked just like this littered all throughout. Defend it away all you like, the similarity is nothing to some, suspicious to others and laughable to the rest. Nobody is going to be convinced to shift camps.
@Matroska What do you mean Nintendo didn't create Birdo and Shy Guy? If you're referring to them coming from Doki Doki Panic I'm pretty sure that was a Nintendo game itself, I think Miyamoto himself had some involvement in the dvelopment.
@SpaceboyScreams "Nobody is going to be convinced to shift camps."
When it comes to Nintendo fanboys, that's one thing we can agree on.
It's just funny that there are plenty of open world games with climbing, gliding, towers that reveal the map, repetitive collectibles, but Nintendo do it years after everyone else and now they're the ones who everyone else copies.
I mean, to be specific with Sonic, the Knuckles levels in SA1&2 are basically microcosms of BotW. Large open, vertiginous areas, climb up walls and cliffs, glide round, stick to a wall if you glide into it, collect treasure, etc. But oh no, Our Lord and Saviour Nintendo-sama invented it entirely from scratch.
Your title implies this character is called "Koco", meanwhile the tweet implies it's the name of the species. Which is it?
Anyway, looks cute!
Looks like something from a Hayao Miyazaki, film.
I’m so sick of people acting like botw invented the games open world mechanics. Yes people jumped on the train, but that literally goes for any other genre of game.
You can say botw is the best open world game, your opinion,, but please don’t act like it invented the mechanics, because other games were doing them for years.
Huge Princess Mononoke vibes. So cute. Can't wait to play this on next gen consoles tho
@Matroska you make a good point, SA literally had knuckles climbing, gliding, swimming, and looking for collectibles.
Edit: hey haven’t even said if these things are collectibles or not.
Big fan of this little man. Also, yeah: he absolutely looks like a Korok.
But who said that was necessarily a bad thing?
Guys. This guy AND Koroks are BOTH based on Kodama.
@Royalblues Sorry, ignore my previous attempt.
I think it's [ img ] url here [ /img ] without any spaces.
Eg:
@Dinglehopper Sorry, but you are totally wrong in that claim of "Sonic never does anything original".
Sonic does original stuff all the time, and that is the problem with the franchise.
The Sonic franchise declined because they change too much, instead of just getting what worked on previous games and improving on their strong spots, they just reinvent everything in the next game, having new gimmicks in every single game, gimmicks can be good if they are not constantly thrown away and replaced with new ones.
They can't even do corridor stages properly, and they are already trying an open world.
@Dinglehopper Also, every single open-world game is going to be a BOTW ripoff now? BOTW did not invent the concept of open-world.
@victordamazio It's madness that they never made Sonic Generations or Sonic Mania sequels and essentially killed off the Sonic All-Star Racing series for Team Sonic Racing (even though I did like it myself)
Is everyone thinking Koroks were any kind or original idea? They are Ghibli Kodamas - which have been copied in various forms dozens of times. Nintendo owes half their catalog to Miyazaki.
Snorlax I love you but you too.
What? I can’t believe princess mononoke ripped off of botw.
With all due respect but i find it strange to be called a Nintendo fanboy in a medium designed for Nintendo die-hard enthusiasts. I always think twice before posting to not abuse anyone else so I’d expect nothing else in return from this community.
As per this news, it seems heavily inspire by Nintendo lore and innovation even if its not a copy-paste of a completely new concept, as Nintendo draws heavily in Japanese legends and folklore. One can argue one element or another is nothing but accidental similarities. But putting everything we know so far together, the whole world seems a bit too Nintendo’s friendly, I think.
I miss the chao, we didn't need a rock version
He looks like something you see in legend of zelda not in Sonic. The design looks so bland as well I wish they announced that chao garden was there.
That is a pretty shameless rip-off of koroks, but, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. I still think this game is shaping up to be great!
@Snatcher Yeah, don't get me wrong, BotW is one of my favourite games of all time. It's one of those few games that goes beyond "just" a game and onto the level of something, dare I say, artistic. But that doesn't mean it doesn't owe a debt to loads of other games, just like all other games do. So for example, every time a cel shaded game comes along, Nintendo fanboys are like "ooh they copied BotW" even though it was like the 10,000th game to do that
I think, to clear the air about Sonic Frontiers ripping on BOTW, it isn't about Nintendo doing the type of genre so much as it is the timing in which Sonic games sometimes seem to place Sonic in a genre/style that is reminiscent of the latest Mario or Zelda. Sonic Lost World pulled its best impersonation of Super Mario Galaxy, and now... Not 10 years ago, not 18 years ago, no... NOW Sonic Team decides to "open world" Sonic after a certain other famous series recently did a take that I dunno... Millions loved? The overall point is it emphasizes how Sonic Team is low on their own ideas for the blue blur. Regardless, I still love Sonic's world.
Better hope this trailer slaps. The BOTW allusions when it was announced brought mockery, the demo made it look dull.
This Koro--- I mean, Koco reminds me of something... what can it be 🤔
@Matroska Thank you!
All of these people calling this new race a rip off of Zelda yet are uncultured about japanese mythology...
C'mon. I thought people on a Japanese centric company fansite would be a slight bit wiser about this.
@victordamazio "BOTW DIDNT MAKE THE OPEN WORLD GENRE" Why do people keep saying this as if it's some sort of counter-argument?
Pardon my language, but no sh*t. But something can still be a blatant rip-off. It's not like I would call BotW a rip-off of GTA just because they're both open-world. But Sonic Frontiers is an OBVIOUS rip-off of BotW.
-Nothing but nature, old ruins and robots everywhere
-Nothing but piano music, even composed the same way as BotW.
-Landscape and visual style similar to BotW. Deserts, grasslands, etc.
-Completing random environmental puzzles by the "Not-Koroks".
That's just some examples. As more and more about the game is shown, the similarities keep piling up.
@victordamazio Umm...I actually said: "If they DO try something new, it ends up being terrible or half-baked"
So no, I'm not "totally wrong" because you just said exactly what I did lol.
hey! what a Korok is doing in Sonic game? go back to Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and it sequel.
Looks straight outta animal crossing
