Update [Fri 15th Jul, 2022 02:15 BST]: Pokémon Puzzle League has now been made available to Switch Online Expansion Pack subscribers. You'll be able to access it via the Nintendo 64 games library. Enjoy!
Original article [Fri 8th Jul, 2022 02:25 BST]: Last month, Nintendo added Pokémon Snap to the Switch Online Expansion Pack service, and since then, fans have been wondering what's next for the N64's digital library.
It seems from here on out, Nintendo may not be providing a future schedule for what's on the way - with the surprise announcement today that the service will be getting Pokémon Puzzle League. This Panel de Pon-style puzzle game was originally released on the Nintendo 64 in the year 2000.
Here's the game description:
Get ready for a new kind of Pokémon battle where the power and speed of your brain are just as important as the strength of your Pokémon! Join Ash, Brock, Misty, and many more characters from the Pokémon animated series as they gather in Puzzle Village to compete for the title of Pokémon Puzzle Master.
Pokémon Puzzle League was also previously made available as a digital title on the Wii Shop channel in 2008. For more information about the Switch Online Expansion Pack N64 library, check out our Nintendo Life guide:

Amazing game, looking forward to this one!
Cool! But I guess this means we won’t be getting an announcement for the next “batch” of N64 games covering the next six months or so. Now we just get the true drip-feed, never knowing if another game is coming or not.
This is the best news ever!! I love this game/Tetris Attack.
An addicting and fun game
@mereel Weeeeeeell next month is the 25th anniversary of Goldeneye and we know an XBox version is coming at some point, soooo.....
I did not expect this
This pleases me greatly.
Japan are getting the 2 Custom Robo games which means the September 2021 general Direct N64 lineup is now complete for Japan. I'm going to guess August is Goldeneye (perhaps Xbox announces it at Gamescom) and then we get a general Direct in September showcasing what's next for NSO Expansion Pack.

The best version of Puzzle League released worldwide, only because they kept the GCN version Japan exclusive.
Would be nice if they ever got around to porting that version for Switch... but in the meantime, I'll enjoy the Pokemon variant.
@steventonysmith "Look forward not backwards"
...they are all retro games you know. Dated or not, they're all roughly the same age on this app. XD
I just think this is funny.
@Angelic_Lapras_King
Ok but they aren't all licensed games owned by other companies. Golden Eye has almost a zero percent chance of being released on this service. First they would have to get the rights from MGM and/or Amazon, then Rare (who is owned by Microsoft). What a chore for a game that people remember fondly but in all honestly plays terribly
This is a good announcement. But I dislike the drip-feed approach. Players would by and large prefer to see a timeline for NSO releases.

The Goldeneye rumor is just that: A RUMOR. There’s no way this license-nightmare of a game will be released….
…unless the no-talent rich kid (a.k.a Microsoft) spends a lot of money.
I think everyone would rather have a single announcement of a long-range release schedule, but that just doesn't make sense for Nintendo. People would tend to wait to subscribe until a certain game or games were released. This way, Nintendo gets more impulse subscriptions. I'm not saying I prefer this approach, but it's business.
@DK-Fan MGM who were responsible for distribution of the 007 movies is now owned by Amazon and the British company Eon Productions outright owns the 007 IP, and with how poorly the last 007 movie did, Eon Productions might not allow any of the old 007 stuff to be re-released in any way, shape or form, and yes, they have the final say over the 007 video games because the games use their IP
I've never gotten around to trying this one, but it looked fun! I'm not subscribed to the expansion pack, but I do want to pick it up on Wii U VC while I still can.
@DK-Fan The achievements for it are live on Xbox... it coming to a Nintendo system is a rumor, sure, but there's evidence it exists and it'll be out soon on at least one platform.
Another month and the wait for GameBoy/a new console continues. Only until then will I buy NSO+
One of my favorite version of Panel de Pon game. Still got this for my original N64 and Wii Virtual Console on my Wii U. Odd how this Pokemon game is the only one in existence that is based on the anime.
Wow awesome. I had Puzzle Challenge on GB but never played the N64 version.
Now that we have the original Panel de Pon (let's forget about Tetris Attack ever coming) on the SNES app and Pokémon Puzzle League on the N64 one, we are only missing Panel de Pon GCN to have all the console games on the Switch.
Of course we're still missing the handheld ones: Yoshi no Panepon/Tetris Attack on the GB, Pokémon Puzzle Challenge and the unreleased Panel de Pon GB on the GBC, Dr. Mario & Puzzle League on the GBA and Planet Puzzle League on the DS. You be the judge on whether to include Animal Crossing Puzzle League or not.
Nice. Definitely gonna check this out.
I have it on N64 plus I bought it on Wiiware too so I have no need for this.
@steventonysmith Yeah I laugh when I see people so eagerly wanting GoldenEye...they've clearly not played it in 10 years or more because it's just really bad now. The rose tinted nostalgia glasses are going to blind a whole bunch of people when they get to play it again.
Finally! This is one of my favorites. Played it all the time with my mom and brother.
Man, Nintendo's gotten faster with these roll outs. Here we thought releasing both N64 and Genisis games together would mean the roll out would take twice as long as the SNES games as I think we'd get them at the rate of two months, granted it was a few at a time. But now, I felt like it wasn't so long ago since we got Mario Golf and Pokemon Snap.
I only played the gbc version. So I’m looking forward to try this game
@ReaperMelia Because you can't buy or download both Panel de Pon and Pokemon Puzzle League on Switch, this game (Flipon) is the only Panel de Pon like game you could ever purchase and download for Switch. Looks cheap but let's face it if you don't subscribe to NSO this is the only one you could get and still had almost the same fun factor.
Dude! This is awesome!
As for goldeneye 007 the chances of that game getting on NSO is about slim to none. (I don’t hate the game because I haven’t played it before it’s just that it’s a licensed game so they probably have to pay a pretty penny to get it on the app)
@ReaperMelia It's impossible to buy on Wii U, because it only released on Wii VC, because Nintendo.
Well, I guess DK64. Smash, Wave Race, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Mario Party and Pokemon Stadium are next year, then...
Very, very nice! 😎
@dkc_fan Also Turok 3, Gex: Enter the Gecko, Rayman 2, Excitebike 64, Ogre Battle 64, Hybrid Heaven, Mega Man 64, Castlevania 64, Harvest Moon 64, Blast Corp, Jet Force Gemini, Goemon's Big Adventures, Diddy Kong Racing, Cruis'n USA, Cruis'n World, and Cruis'n Exotica.
I love this game and Tetris Attack. Now please... PLEASE... Put TETRISPHERE on the NSO Expansion Pass!!!!
my older sister is a huge fan of this one! once she finds out I have the game, I may not see my Switch back 😂😢
@Burning_Spear I personally think the entire subscription service is in place so that people don't stock up on every single title for switch and not have enough reason to buy their new console whenever that's released.
Me and my sister used to play this with each other all the time when we were kids! Time to bring the old battles back 😁
Reading the comments I just want to say I am happy for those who were waiting for this one. Personally I can't wait to play Zelda's Mimish Cap and the Oracle games on NSO or in remake form, but that just sounds like a far away dream. For that one guy in previous topics on NSO: Give him Wace Race, you cowards!
Give me Wave Race 64 you cowards!
@SteamEngenius I played Goldeneye last week with a friend and we both had a blast same as we ever did.
Love this Game soooo much
Feel like a lot of games added sometimes devalue the service. Maybe say the next wave 😊
this game is DOPE
i hope The New Tetris gets some love at some point....... Honestly my favorite Tetris release ever, almost solely for the soundtrack
@dinosaurfan38 No Time To Die did not do “poorly”. It made nearly $800 million worldwide in an industry still recovering from a pandemic. Then who knows how much more in home video. It was touted as one of the biggest recovery signs for the industry.
Looking forward to giving this game a go but I was hoping the next batch of N64 games would be announced in a Direct- we still haven’t had a proper one
so we reached the point that the n64 drops become as disappointing as the nes and snes drops... that was fast...
All the GoldenEye doubters on here it's like I've entered a time machine to 3 years ago...!
The Xbox Achievements leaked months ago... yes this doesn't mean it's definitely coming to Switch, but come on, its far away from the 0% chance some have said. It's odds on to be launching in August.
Fun game, even if it seems really... scuffed.
I enjoy puzzle games, but this looks like it's just Tetris Attack without the sweet bass lines. Not enough to get me to buy the expansion pack.
Where is Jon Cartwright when you need him")
@AlienX Oh, whoops... you're right. I could've sworn it was on Wii U as well.
That's neat. Kinda wish we could get Tetris Attack too but I guess we can't because of the name and we have to settle for the Japanese version of that one.
I've never played this. I'm definitely going to check it out, it sounds like a lot of fun
I had loads of fun with this back in the day, really looking forward to playing it again
Give us Yoshi no Panepon.
Love this game can't wait to play it again without connecting up older hardware. Plus portable will suit it btillantly
That's one hell of a left field addition, that's wicked! Can't wait to play this for the first time (and maybe finally understand the hype behind Panel de Pon).
Nice! Now give us Mischief Makers!
"Shake shake!"
@steventonysmith @SteamEngenius
I still play Goldeneye and Perfect Dark to this day 🤷🏾♂️
There's an entire growing community that also still plays, speedruns and makes custom content for both games.
Sounds to me like you two simply hate the game because it's popular 🤣🤷🏾♂️
Next week, monday? Or when they regular update the games?
Sweet! Will give this a try.
Would love for Tetrisphere to also eventually make its way to NSO. That game is the only video game that got my parents hooked. Fond memories playing that all together in the late 90s.
Pie in the sky hope that will never come to fruition i'm sure... Conker's Bad Fur Day!
Maybe it's with rose tinted glasses but the split screen multiplayer was amazing! Had so much fun playing Heist, War and Deathmatch with friends.

@steventonysmith so you're allowed to be obsessed with a "gem" like katana zero but they can't be "obsessed" with their childhood game?
People are allowed to have preferences you know.
Not at all what I was wanting but good for those that are pleased by this.
@Arkay
Not obsessed. I played through it twice, waiting for the DLC, and have moved on. I don't buy the newest video game hardware to obsess about a 25 yr old game
Pokémon Puzzle League is fun, I recommend it to anyone. Nice addition to the expansion pack.
@steventonysmith video games are a form of escape for many. Myself included. Let people enjoy things.
@Arkay
People can enjoy anything they want I can continue to be confused by some things they worship.
@WhiteTrashGuy Only actual Tetris games are allowed to use the Tetris name. There was a time when the Tetris company didn’t care; hence Tetris Attack and Tetrisphere (maybe Hatris and Wordtris too). But now they do and we can’t even get Tetris Attack anymore; we have to get the Japanese original Panel De Pon.
Fantastic news.
I'm looking forward to playing Pokémon Puzzle League.
@Bass_X0 Oh man, I love Tetris Attack (probably why I'm excited for Pokémon Puzzle League being added to NSO). It's one of the few video games, my mom would actually play with my siblings and I, so it'll always have a special place in my heart.
Awesome.... I just got N64 controllers.. now where is wave race?
NSO- N64 needs to also add...
.. Expeditiously at that please.
… Wun can only hope.
@nocdaes You know that leak could had been a hoax too.
Very underrated game, glad to see … although wave race would make more sense in the middle of summer
@Serpenterror even the most pessimistic would have to agree that it was not a hoax. I saw it with my own eyes! GoldenEye is happening. It would already be announced had we not had the Russian invasion of Ukraine. That caused them to push the launch back - most likely to August to tie in with the anniversary and the film being back in the cinemas for a limited run.
As long as the anniversary goes ahead, and the film is screened as planned (I.e. no further delays due to the war/ a further development in the war) then the game is arriving then too.
Anyone else think it's odd that most games Nintendo has released for N64 Online have been single player focused? I bought 4 N64 controllers, give me Mario Party 2, 3, and Super Smash Bros. already!
@Luke937 I’m there with you. I bought 4 N64 controllers for this very use case. However, even now there are plenty of 4 player NSO games. Mario Golf and Mario Tennis are great. Mario Kart, F-Zero X and Starfox 64 all have excellent 4 player modes. Dr. Mario 64 is a blast with 4 players, totally underrated. Pokémon Puzzle League will support 2 players. I think even Winback has a 4-player mode, and Sin & Punishment has a co-op mode. So there are plenty of multiplayer options, and they work great online. We play 4 person Dr. Mario with online friends regularly.
Though I agree with your sentiment that Mario Party and Smash 64 are sorely missed at this point.
Color me surprised!? It wasn't on Wii U but Donkey Kong 64 was but not on Wii!? Very interesting isn't it then... 🤔
The Puzzle League love since they put Panel de Pon on NSO is freakin' sweet!
@nib0 At least they've been updating the app every month (except November), like in the first year of the NES NSO app, as opposed to the first year and every year after that for the SNES NSO app, and unlike the other apps, they haven't added shovelware yet. Let's hope we see at least one Mario Party before they add something dumb like Quest 64.
@Yosher After we got Tetris Attack, Nintendo eventually re-released it on the Satellaview service for SNES in Japan, minus the Tetris name. If my information is correct, Nintendo could give us that.
I would also say there is no reason to withhold it. Many NES, & SNES titles have "special editions" on NSO, so it's not like Nintendo has difficulty releasing duplicates.
@Captain-N Those are all just the same versions but with a save file already preloaded though, not quite the same as having a different version altogether. Unless you count Super Mario All Stars on the SNES while the NES versions are also still available.
I don't think they ever released any of the Satellaview games outside of their initial 'releases' right? Kinda doubt they're going to start now. Especially for Tetris Attack since they already have Panel de Pon and now Pokemon Puzzle League. You never know though I suppose.
@Yosher No, I think Nintendo themselves haven't released any official Satellaview titles. You're correct. I think Square-Enix recently released one of their Satellaview titles, though I'm not sure.
I would love the Satellaview titles to be officially released.
@Captain-N I'd love it too but I doubt it's ever going to happen. I think we're pretty much forced to pirate them if we ever want to play those versions at all. But you never know what Nintendo plans to do in the future. For all we know they have them all lined up ready for release right now!
@Flint
I agree.
All it needs is proper dual analog control and the framerate fixed to run at 60fps.
If someone did those two things it would play fine.
@Arkay
The only reason I find them hard to play now is due to the framerate and the controls. If they rerelease Goldeneye with a fixed framerate (even locking it to 30 would be a huge improvement) and implemented dual analog controls Id be replaying Goldeneye constantly.
Outside of that, they are both still brilliant shooters from a time period where exploration in a 3D space was encouraged. They play a lot like Doom and Quake; they give you open playfields (well as open as the N64 could handle) to do your missions in non-linear fashion. It’s the same reason I love Dark Forces and Dark Forces II so much. And especially Half-Life.
That’s something that’s sorely missing from 90% of FPS games today. Call of Duty in 2003 popularized the corridor shooting gallery and most FPS games have conformed to that ever since.
I’d love to see more shooters like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark re-enter the market. Non linear objectives, exploration, and tight combat challenges in between those two things. It’s sorely missed.
@jojobar N64 had a reason to come out slow, the library is quite small about as much as 360 games. The NES and Super NES had thousands of games so I think Nintendo will try to push as little N64 games out as possible while maintaining at least 2 or 3 titles from the NES and Super NES library while Genesis gets the most out as that library is much easier to get by and lesser value than the Nintendo ones.
@steventonysmith Microsoft/Rare games are already on the service, so it's actually gone from unlikely to very likely that Golden Eye will be released. In fact, it's all but been confirmed that Microsoft has a finished remake of Golden Eye, meaning they have already re-aquired the license. The game has only been put on hold, like Advanced Wars, because of the real life conflict between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States which supplies them arms.
Do you like a puzzle league where Pokémon characters scream at you every time you do anything?
@Captain-N And what would actually be worth releasing besides BS Zelda, which NEEDS to be on the service?
@thinkhector
Who confirmed the remake? Nobody? It's all a bunch of unconfirmed rumors and leaks? Yeah I thought so. Again if it comes out great all those people who think they want it will realize it's not as great as they remembered and if it doesn't come out oh well we really didn't need it to anyway
@steventonysmith This is not a rumor. Microsoft accidentally leaked it. You can find achievements listings for "GoldenEye 007" on Microsoft's official website. It looks like they were going to drop the game. The rumor is only in why it was delayed. The war seems the likely reason given the timing, and the plot of the game. Now, is the game coming to Nintendo? It's at least more likely than not since Banjo-Kazooie made it on. However, there is one good reason it might not be released for Nintendo Online. Licensed games have an expiration date. Meaning even it comes to Nintendo Online, at a later date, they will have to remove it. So I would say it's a YES for Microsoft, and just a likely for Nintendo.
@thinkhector
But people are calling it a remaster, it could just be a ROM dump
@Serpenterror — Turok 3! I’d pay more money if Nightdive Studios did it. I never got much time to play it as a kid compared to T1 and 2 so I’d love a chance to get into T3 again.
@PigmaskFan I just want Nintendo to put those titles on their service. I'm fairly sure they have archived the voice acting, and could easily piece together those titles to play similarly to how they did during the original live, and repeat broadcasts.
That's cool. Never played it, so I am looking forward to this. I was pleasently surprised how much fun Dr Mario 64 is. Hopefully this will be a similar experience.
