We're big fans of developer Diactro, which has served up two small but delightfully entertaining titles on Switch - Toree 3D and Toree 2. They've now unveiled their latest title as part of our Nintendo Life Indie Spotlight - Super Kiwi 64.
As the name suggests, this adopts some of the style and ideas made famous in Super Mario 64, though of course with its own twists and ideas as you go on a collect-a-thon. The developer's description and what you can expect is below.
Super Kiwi 64 is a 3D-Platformer and Collect-a-Thon, in a low poly late 90s console look.
Features:
- Low poly late 90s retro looks.
- Kiwi can jump, glide, corkscrew-attack and stick to walls in order to jump up almost every wall.
- The levels can be played in any order, and not every level needs to be finished in order to collect enough to reach the ending.
- Features a bird with a long beak!
We're looking forward to giving this a whirl - it's targeting a Switch release later this year.

Loved the Toree and macBat games. Can't wait for this.
wow I didnt catch this was made by the same people who made Toree
now wonder this looks amazing!
This looks great!
Yes count me in!
I'm a Kiwi and I have never seen a Kiwi climb like that.
Pass
Just kidding.
Looks great and it's nice to see us Kiwis get some playtime 😜
I was thinking "oh great, another derivative 64sploitation game" but it actually looks really fun! My interest is piqued.
This looks fantastic. It reminds me of the long beaked bird you could turn into in Super Mario Odyssey.
This looks fantastic!
Toree was really good and really tiny. I'm not expecting a massive game here, but it should be a good one. I'll get it.
The Toree games and Macbat 64 were fun little diversions for the half hour or so it takes to complete them, but they left me wanting more. From the trailer it looks like Kiwi 64 might have a bit more substance to it. Here's hoping that's the case!
For those interested, this is a follow-up to the original Kiwi 64, which can be unlocked within Macbat 64. Would recommend, since Macbat 64 is pretty packed for a $2 game, even without Kiwi 64!
I gotta say though, Super Kiwi 64 is looking pretty good visually! Happy to see Siactro stepping up their game! Hoping Tasty Ramen gets finished and released on Switch someday.
Seeing as how I enjoyed the toree games I’ll definitely keep an eye on this.
Major nights into dreams flashbacks. Sold.
MacBat 64 was awful though. I liked Toree 1 but MacBat was trash
@Stargazer I thought it was good for the price I paid for it. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of games that cost just as much and are of much lower quality. .-.
@Rosalinho There's a free demo available on itch.io for PC if you're interested!
@KayFiOS Also if you play on PC Kiwi 64 is a free separate game on Itch.io
Inject this into my veins
Took the bird climbing function of Mario Odyssey and turned it into a full game...okay then.
@SteamEngenius this is a sequel to a game that has been out longer than Mario Odyssey. The original kiwi had the same mechanics and is much older. Just saying.
@Stargazer no it wasn't trash
This looks right up my alley!
Wow this is one of two game I know of that actually starred a kiwi. The other one was Yuji Naka's Ivy the Kiwi? game for Wii and DS. Nice to finally see what a 3D version of that would had look like.
@Freek
I hope that no New Zealanders were injured in the making of this game.
Some of my favorite celebrities are Kiwis. How about Lucy Lawless! Would not mind seeing her in this game!
