Update [Mon 18th Apr, 17:15 BST]: To go along with the Korean rating for Sonic Origins, key art for the game has been uncovered, adding further fuel to the speculation that SEGA may be sharing more details on its release very soon.
Original Story [Mon 18th Apr, 12:55 BST]
Sonic Origins was announced quite a while back during the 'Sonic Central' stream in May 2021. Nothing has since been mentioned regarding the upcoming collection, but it seems it may be on the way sooner than we think thanks to a recent rating in South Korea.
As reported by VGC, the Korean ratings board has classified the game for "all users" (no surprise there), but the very mention of the game is noteworthy since we haven't seen neither hide nor hair of it for nearly a year at the time of writing.
The game will be a compilation of the so-called "classic" Sonic games, including:
Rather than 'vanilla' emulations, the games included will apparently be completely new ports, allowing for 16:9 widescreen views and other fancy bits and bobs.
Hopefully we'll hear more from SEGA directly regarding the upcoming game soon.

Well, it's one more chance to have a good job done and I'm counting on games running perfectly and a considerable museum-like feature. I'm not gonna say I'm really hyped because that'd be a step towards disappointment considering how they've been treating the Sonic franchise lately, but I'd really like to see this collection receiving the treatment it deserves. Then I'd buy it on spot
Wooooooooooooooooow a 4958th way to buy Mega Drive Sonic the Hedgehog games? I'm so exciteeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed......
Yep I'll definitely be picking these up, as only the second time they have received native ports (first for CD). A shame they haven't gone further and included the rather great 8 bit entries and Spinball but it'll be nice to have these together again
I'll probably buy it for Sonic 3 and CD, but I'd really like a Sonic Handheld Collection with all the Sonic Advance, Sonic Rush games, Sonic Rivals and others... These games have been lost in time and honestly there's enough for two collections... I think this would be a lot more interesting to a lot of people than the Mega Drive games again.
Except for Sonic 3, I have all these in one form or another. So it'd definitely have to include something new in the package, as Ollie mentions. I wouldn't buy just five straight ports.
I wonder how they gonna do the music in sonic 3 since that was Micheal Jackson music?
Some news about Frontiers would be nice.
As @John_Deacon says, I'm disappointed there's no Master System versions.
If Nintendo did this (again) WITHOUT both Super Mario Land Games, I'd be just as annoyed.
No SMS 1, 2 and Chaos makes me sad. Those games need some love.
@carlos82 Indeed, Spinball and the Master System and Game Gear games would be awesome to have!
Hopefully this means it’s releasing soon, I really want to play Sonic 3&K and widescreen Sonic 2 on my Switch.
Here’s a few of the things that I want to see included in these versions:
Spin dash, drop dash & Insta shield move options in every game.
Sonic 3 save system and save states / rewind function in every game.
Knuckles & Tails playable with their full move sets in every game.
Online multiplayer in every game.
Sonic 3 sprites in every game.
Hidden palace zone in Sonic 2.
Bonus Blue Spheres game mode in Sonic 3.
Sega just needs to release it. Don’t wait for a Sonic party with the band where the livestream inevitably goes to hell, all just to announce it’s coming again. Just put it out.. lol
I wish Nintendo would release their Mario, Zelda and Metroid games in retro compilations besides Mario 3D All Stars on the Switch.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Agreed... I'd rather see a BIG collection, like the Genesis Classics or Rare Replay, but for a ton of Sonic games.
I rather have Sonic Mania 2, but this is the next best thing. Finally a good Sonic game.
I am hoping and praying that this collection still runs on the Retro Engine, specifically the Sonic Mania iteration (or an upgraded version thereof).
I am also hoping and praying for a physical release with Genesis/Mega Drive-inspired reversible cover art that matches Sonic Mania Plus' reversible cover art.
This is one of my most hyped upcoming releases. Can’t wait to have a proper Sonic 3 & K release with the supposed newer features!
Been waiting on any news for this one, but "so-called?" AFAIK the classic Sonic games are as classic as the classic Mario games to me. Love them both.
I'll be grabbing this for sure. I've bought them way too many times. I have Sonic 1 on just almost everything ranging from GameCube to GBA, Wii to DS, the Steam version on PC, Sega Ages on Switch, mobile, etc. Enjoyed them all, even the GBA one. Technical problems aside, still was cool having a way to play Sonic 1 on the go long before the DS version and the awesome mobile port.
Can't help but wonder if Sonic 1, 2 and CD will be based on those ports, those are excellent ports.
As much as I like those five games, wish this collection also included the Game Gear/Master System Sonic platformers as well; that portion of Sonic's 2D history has been ignored long enough.
I’m with everybody here. Lets not forget other little gems like Sonic Pocket Adventure on the NGPC and Tails’ Adventure.
Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, but not Sonic 3 & Knuckles...?
Wish it included games that haven't been ported yet.
Knuckles' Chaotix
SegaSonic the Hedgehog
Sonic Pocket Adventure
Sonic Battle
Sonic Advance series
Sonic Rush
You know? Games that aren't ALREADY on the system?
I’ve no HUGE interest in Sonic, classic or otherwise, but I’ll buy this if Sonic3 has the original Michael Jackson composed music.
@ButterCashier
this is one of the things I'm curious about since when separate both games feel like they are missing something where's when together they become one of my favourite sonic games of all time.
omg ive bought these games so many times. I cannot think of a more played out run of games than sonic 1-3, cd and knuckles. :/
that being said, these are some great games. idk.
"we haven't seen neither hide nor hair of it"
Huge missed opportunity to say "we haven't seen top nor Tails of it"
I'm a big Sega fan and a Sega collector, but this collection is disappointing. I was hoping for something along the lines as a mash of the GameCube Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Gems collection. I think the only way to get the Game Gear games these days is from the 3DS eShop. It's a shame that GG/MS seems to be forgotten at this point. I think GG ports are important because the cost of batteries is getting insane haha.
I'll probably get it, just to have the games on the go (especially 3).
Surprised to see sonic 3. It seems to be the one that always never gets a port.
If these are ports and not emulation, I wonder if they’re based on the Christian Whitehead mobile ports of Sonic 1, 2 and CD? Maybe this is what they’ve been working on instead of Mania 2?
S3&K would be nice to play on Switch or something. I think it doesn't get ported a lot because of legal issues, probably because Michael Jackson did some of the music or something.
I already have Sonic 1 and 2 on Switch, but I’ll still more than likely get this game for the improved versions of all of these.
Day one! I'm genuinely excited about this, it's the first native port of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. These games are some of the best platformers ever made, so it's nice to have modern versions available.
In regard to the music of Sonic 3, yes, Michael Jackson made a few tunes for it but he's not credited because he didn't like the 16-bit sound. Thus, the legal issues aren't as big as some people think. It's not just that game that is missing since the seventh generation but also Sonic & Knuckles that doesn't involve Michael Jackson at all and, while Sonic 3 is related to Sonic & Knuckles, all of them belong to the same group and you can play as Knuckles in Sonic 2.
@Mgalens @ButterCashier I assume that the games will connect optionally.
@MsMaestroon Right, it's a small collection but they are new ports. I would add emulated games as extras, a la Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Adventure DX...
I know they're doing some good things with this collection, adding in some more goodies to it would be greatness. They could still add in the PC version of Sonic R, the arcade version of Sonic the Fighters, the Sega Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast, Knuckles Chaotix, and Sonic Pocket Adventure from the NGPC.
Has a physical been announced? I want this on switch
Amy Rose is on the cover...Cautiously optimistic.
@Banjo- When Michael was recording, he was listen to his music on the biggest speakers available, the smallest headphones and everything in between. He wanted to be sure it sounded good to whoever was listening, on whatever they could afford, so your theory as to why he’s not officially credited strikes me as quite possible!
I want this!!! Never played Sonic CD before.
@Chocobo_Shepherd you will just love the Boss music it's... interesting.
What's left to share? NLife has practically done it.
So some of these games are already in Sega Genesis classics Collection and some as stand alone as Sega Ages releases. Sure we get Sonic CD and Knuckles one, but very underwhelming collection. Should have had way more Sonic games from other consoles.
I love Mecha Sonic… I wish we could’ve gotten him as a playable character in Smash Bros.
I’ll end that there but just know I am VERY MUCH excited for this release!
If Taxman : o/yeayo/
If not : Dubious... nightmares of Sonic Genesis on the GBA
My o/yeayo/ doesn't work in NLife comments.. sadface
.. asterisks to show "doing" also doesn't work in NLife comments. A world void of joy
I actually really like this art, even if it’s simple!
All in. Take my money.
Sonic & knuckles only if the music is intact.
I own these games so many different ways. However, I still prefer playing on a CRT.
Nonetheless, of course I will be buying this at some point! If it is physical, then I will get it on a Nintendo product. If it is digital only, then I will buy it on Steam. If both, well I guess both.
Hoping they add some extra modes, remixed stages, collectables, challenges, time trials, etc. I love all these... but I have access to them on multiple systems I own. Will only dip in again if there are a few new hooks.
Amy Rose's nose and eyes are odd in this image.
@AmplifyMJ I think that the problem is that he wasn't used to or he didn't grow up with the 16-bit sounds of those years. His contributions are cool but if you listen to the Sonic 3 tunes not related to him, it's obvious that the people working at Sega knew how to make the most of the Mega Drive while his bits are like portions of his singles that sound muffled in the game.
Would be nice if this collection included that one Sonic arcade game where you control him in sort of 3D space using a track ball.
@AmplifyMJ It isn't a theory, Jackson's stated reason for leaving, according to Brad Buxer, one of his co-workers at the time, was that Jackson wasn't satisfied with the way his music sounded on the Genesis Soundchip. There has been a lot of information that has come out in the last decade or so on Jackson's involvement in Sonic 3.
@MsMaestroon Be honest, very few people want those Game Gear and Master System games, do they?
And I doubt anyone is itching to play Sonic Labyrinth on their Switch.
Now if Christian Whitehead and Headcannon ported the Adventure games onto Switch tho...
@Knuckles Brad, Brad, really really Brad? That’s good enough for me. Thanks for the information.
@russell-marlow Haha, yeah Sonic Labrinth isn't terribly good, but Triple Trouble, Blast and Mean Bean Machine are a blast. I'd be curious to see the lifetime sales for the emulations on 3DS. Doesn't bother me either way because I still have the original hardware but for the sake of legacy I always like seeing MS/GG love.
Haha, maybe Mr. Whitehead will get on it one day! I had a hard time with Adventures coming from Genesis and Nintendo platformers. I see why it's loved though.
Oh, OOOOOOOOOH
This looks so good I need it now
Finally, an update! And the fact its a rating should mean whatever issues like the Sonic 3 music have been resolved, the collection's near enough finished and we can probably see a new trailer soon with that all important release date.
@MsMaestroon You can always, I dunno... just emulate them on a PC if you want. They can't be that hard to emulate on any modern computer, can they?
As for the Adventure games, they are a solid good time, even if the first game has some filler content. The second game doesn't waste any time, and it's usually everyone's favorite 3D Sonic game.
If they were to re-release them, it would be nice if they remastered them like how NIghtDive Studios does there remasters and added a cel-shaded look to both games, while giving the option to Switch between old and new graphics.
I'd grab it for sonic 3 and knuckles, and maybe sonic cd- the other two have already been released countless times
@russell-marlow Yeah I suppose emulation is always an option. The games will be preserved regardless that way.
Yeah I own both of them but I've never been able to get into them! Like watching playthroughs of people who grew up with it though. Adventures was just a totally different era of Sonic haha. Yeah, cell shaded would look awesome!
I don't want to talk up trouble but its always been my assumption based on the original trailer that the Sonic 1,2 and CD on this collection will be the Christian Whitehead ones (maybe with some tweaks to get a consistent menu etc) and when they said that Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles would also be widescreen and they were currently in development, that these would also be by the same team/using the same engine (or more likely the Mania engine which I believe is basically the same thing just a newer version).
This is an absolute dream best case scenario for me, the Sonic 1,2 & CD ports are far and away the best way to play those games and the extras, tweak options and unlockables included are perfect. If those are the only games included, no bells and whistles, I will absolutely drop full price on a physical version and love it like no other,
That said, it makes me happy to see people above asking for the Master System games to be included. I can't expect them to remake them all in widescreen (completely different aspect ratio and tile sizes would mean developing a new engine specifically) but just including the roms as unlockables would be great! Though my one request would be if you are going to do all this, PLEASE include the actual Master system versions of games rather than the massively screen cropped GG ones as happened in previous games, that was super annoying to play on a big screen.
Add in Mean Bean Machine and Spinball too? (both MD and SMS). The GG exclusives like Triple Trouble, Tails Adventure etc? Sure, they're cool. Moonshot? Sonic Pocket Adventure! (Sonic Advance 1-3 seem totally out of the question and is more "modern" Sonic, for a later compilation of Adventure titles or whatever).
I was about to type that if all of that is included then this has teh potential to be the absolute best compilation of classic Sonic games ever available, but then I stopped and thought: Even if none of the extras are included and all we get is widescreen high-quality S1,2,CD,3+K (which is what we are promised so far) its already the best compilation. We've literally never seen that before. People talk a lot about how Sonic 1+2 are available everywhere but the Whitehead ports are MILES ahead of simple emulation, and the fact they are kinda stuck on Android-based devices etc is a crime.
Side note: After being weirdly left out of Mania Plus, classic Amy on the front cover makes me very happy to see 😊
@Itachi2099 these are remakes of the original games, that's the exciting thing.
widescreen 144fps remakes with new features and unused content from the betas.
So Are we saying the collection will be limited to just 5 games?? I certainly hope not!!
I get that they'll be slightly updated, likely comparable to the mobile releases of the classic game, but I agree with others that this looks lacking compared to past compilations. Though finally getting Sonic 3 again after a decade is cool.
I would have liked to see the 8-Bit titles. Chaos and Triple Trouble are very overlooked titles.
Those are good games if you haven't played them before but I was really hoping for something like Sonic Mania 2. Or a Sonic Adventure collection would be awesome.
@Banjo- The legal issue don't just lie with MJ but possibly Sony as I believe they own all of his music now, the other names that were credited and who were affiliated with MJ and since about 2008, Fervor Records. IceCap Zone as we know is essentially 16-bit Hard Times, but at the time of composing music for the game Hard Times went unreleased, that is until Fervor Records got the entire The Jetzons music catalogue and released their unreleased tracks.
@aasdddas Nothing has been stated about these version being 144fps and including beta material. Where'd you get that info?
I'm surprised the sonic advanced series has been stuck on the Gameboy as long as it has. 3 may be my favorite game in the series.
