Got this for the kids. The amount of text you have to read to know what to do and why is going on blows me away. This game is far from “pick up and play.”
@buggysdad huh? It’s only a wall of text in the beginning to teach you how to play and introduce you to core characters. MH is very definition of “pick up and play”.
Turn on game, go hunt a random monster from hub town, and come back when done. You can usually do all that within 15-20 min
I love this game. Rise is, in my opinion, the best Monster Hunter to date. World was great and Gen Ultimate was good as well but Rise takes the cake. It's just so fun. I've logged over 100 hours and can't wait for Sunbreak to drop.
Still waiting for Sunbreak.
That'll really make me come back to this a substantial amount if it's as good as Iceborne was for World.
I’ve really slacked off on this game. I need to get back at it.
@buggysdad I certainly find that there is a steep learning curve when starting to play the MH series...which really turns off a lot of players starting to get into the series.
I recommend watching youtube guides on how to use your weapon of choice - I was originally purely a longsword user since MH Generations, but started to use other weapons in MH Rise with the help of youtube guides.
Once you find the "combat rhythm" of the your preferred weapon and get to experience and figure out the tells and moves of monsters, "pick up and play" becomes more apparent.
Another thing that I learned to make things a bit easier is to hunt with other people online...I think that this makes it faster to get the parts you need to make stronger gear. I've only played MH games offline until MH Rise, and the pace of acquiring monster parts while playing online with other players is noticeably faster...because you generally get to finish hunts faster.
My family is also looking forward to the Sunbreak DLC. I run a 2 swtich household...I digitally purchased MH RIse in first switch, and I have a cartridge in the second switch. Does anyone know if I need to buy the DLC twice? Or does game sharing work for DLCs?
I need to buy this game! Whats the cheapest it’s been? 😉
@Arawn93 You get the basic controls down quickly, but there a billion different menus and systems (each with an accompanying text wall) that take a while to learn/understand. Each round may take 15mins, but learning the game mechanics can be incredibly overwhelming for newcomers and take far, far longer.
@TR4KERZ Check https://www.dekudeals.com/items/monster-hunter-rise I got my used physical for USD $25 before I used one of my GameStop coupons.
@geo-shifter
Thanks, I think I’ll try the free trial going live tomorrow before I buy 👍🏼
@TR4KERZ Please please do! I have a friend of mine that’s been waiting for digital to go on 50% sale again, which will be quite a while. I know sometimes Nintendo does the “15% off” when they do the Nintendo Switch Online trials though. If you do dig it, I’d go for the physical if cartridge collection doesn’t bother you. Even though I got it for $21, it’s well worth $60.
@buggysdad walls of text? What are you talking about? There maybe a handful a couple pages of dialogue in the whole damn game
@Munchlax what walls of text is this beyond the opening segment? You are making it sound like Rise is Triangle Strategy or something. After the initial portion of game the “walls of text” drips feed you a little at a time.
@Arawn93 Yes it’s just the opening segment, but 1) I’m pretty sure that’s what @buggysdad was talking about, and 2) That opening segment can take a while to get through. Literally every time a new system is introduced, there’s a screen of text. Given the depth, it’s a lot for a newcomer to keep track of, and the game is pretty bad at “show, don’t tell”. When you get more experienced, it’s a pick up and play game, but it can take a while to figure out in the first place.
Picked up the game last week and already have 30 hours in. World never kept my interest but I'm hooked on Rise. As for the wall of text stuff? IMO this game is by far the easiest MH game to pick up and figure out for yourself tbh. A quick glance over the text then just play around and get the hang of things on your own.
@zombi3wolf It's such a good game, glad you're enjoying it! 😍
@buggysdad trust me when I say skip those bits and then let the kids have free roam to learn as they go. My 6 year old LOVES the game and she played both Tri and Generations Ultimate which were less forgiving to new players. My 3 yr old has a tendency to nick my switch and run around in the game too, though she's mostly just messing around. With the free weekend we've been teaching one of my daughter's friends to play as well and they're absolutely loving playing together. (My eldest hunts with me and an old friend of mine so we make sure she has fun while she plays with us, but still give her room to make her own mistakes.)
