Update [Wed 23rd Feb, 2022 02:35 GMT]: This limited beta, exclusive to Canada, is now live for Android and Windows users. Enjoy!
Original article [Thu 17th Feb, 2022 03:05 GMT]: Last September, The Pokémon Company revealed the Pokémon Trading Card Game Live - a new free-to-play app for the digital version of the popular TCG that ended up getting delayed until 2022.
We're now in the new year, so what's the latest? In an update over on the official Pokémon website, TPC has announced this version will make its debut exclusively in Canada later this month. It'll be a "limited beta" beginning on 22nd February 2022 and will be available to players in this location via mobile, PC and Mac.
"Pokémon fans in Canada can ride out the winter with a new, invigorating Pokémon TCG experience."
"This new digital version of the game lets fans compile an extensive card collection, build powerful decks, battle friends, and more. Players can add cards to their collection in numerous ways including scanning code cards, exchanging currency earned in-game for booster packs, and participating in daily quests."
You can learn more about how and when to migrate your existing Pokémon TCG Online sunset in our previous post.
This limited release will be followed by a global release at some point this year. Are you interested in trying this new app? Leave a comment down below.

I have seen 1 place that shows part of the press release saying there will be no in app purchases... But sadly everywhere else that reports this news seems to not mention it. Is that not actually part of the press release?
So this is yu gi oh master duel but with Pokémon
@DefHalan I have a few possible explanations. The Canadian beta will have no in app purchases, they’re relying on codes from IRL packs, or both. I’d prefer both because I suspect pricing will be high for digital packs.
Looks cool but these humanoid characters at the side are triggering my uncanny valley. I hope there is an option to hide them.
Even if this did come to Switch at some point (seriously Pokemon, what the hell? lol) I probably wouldn't bother...no matter what card game it is...it's either highly unbalanced (Yugioh Master Duel) or I just have the worse luck ever (Shadowverse...and Yugioh, lol). Either that or people are probably cheating/hacking...I remember my first and only match in this...guy through out 3 Mewtwo EX cards at me at the very beginning, I wasn't able to do a single thing.
No thanks.
As for Shadowverse, it's...fine but even that has it's own issues and I'd rather just pay money and stick with the Switch game, focused on single player. lol
No secrets? Seems more fair than a certain sports game.
I think the Pokemon company are dumb as bricks. They put the dumb swirl mobile game on Switch and yet cannot put their widely successful card game which they actively spending money to develop on switch?
They may announce this later on but which genius is running their marketing and just ignores Nintendo.
Last year ANDROID devices got the unite beta in canada, and my friend was bragging about it. Now I can go brag on his face!
@Ironcore do you remember that cursed human girl from some old tcg Pokémon game? Not the gbc one.
@Wilforce the PokeBeach article made it sound like the full release won't have in app purchases
@SwitchplayerJohn just to let you know, it is not The Pokemon Company making this app. It is The Pokemon Company International, who did not have a software development team before making this app. The previous Pokemon TCG Online app was made and maintained by Dire Wolf Digital. Which is why they are not targeting the Switch as a platform yet. They have new developers trying to make a new game for the first time. Hopefully, in the future they will port it to Switch
Me: a big fan of the original tcg app, dearly hoping for a remaster that changes the oh-so-ugly avatar creation
The remake: makes the original avatars look like a masterpiece
@Cinderace I dont, source?
Eh… I’m still not a fan of the game’s UI and the crafting system. It makes it look like TPCi is trying to follow the drumbeats of other mobile-friendly TCG apps like Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links and MTG: Arena and even those games have problems.
The only pluses I can see is that the video shows off a more traditional game layout for what appears to be the desktop app (and hopefully the tablet app) and that the open beta gives us an idea on what cards will cost under the new dusting system.
@Joeynator3000 “ Either that or people are probably cheating/hacking...I remember my first and only match in this...guy through out 3 Mewtwo EX cards at me at the very beginning, I wasn't able to do a single thing.”
And there it is, the ever-present complaint about Mewtwo Wars and in 2022 of all years…
My friends and I have basically come to the conclusion that if a person is still whinging about Mewtwo Wars, or any other hyper-competitive era in the TCG’s history, then playing PTCGO (and possibly PTCGL) just isn’t for them. People are GOING to build decks that can win games and those will more than likely be tournament-level decks. If you want to play more casual matches or weird formats like Cube Draft or Gym Leader Challenge then you’re better off playing IRL.
@DefHalan The open Pokémon Trading Card Game Live app will more than likely be TCG-code-card-only in the same way that the TCGO is. Remember that TPCi tried to monetize the TCGO in the past with both a paid in-game currency that was exclusive to Canada (Gems, which could be redeemed for tradable packs, promo cards, and sleeves/deckboxes/coins) and giving players the option to buy Tournament Tickets instead of earning them by completing challenges. Not surprisingly the option to buy either was removed in late 2018.
And I second that bit about pointing out that the TCGO/TCGL are TPCi-centric ventures, it really gets on my nerves when I have to explain why a certain Pokémon-related thing isn’t being done and why it’s usually based on the company that’s doing it.
@Jellyghost I just hope there’s a way to turn off the animations that these new avatars use, I’d honestly prefer going back to a live text chat and deal with (AKA laughing at with forum friends and screencapping for moderation purposes) the open toxicity those kinds of environments have than yawning at canned chat responses or cringing at awful dancing and posing.
@Ironcore I believe they’re referring to Julie from the “Pokémon Play It!” PC game that was released back in 1999 in Europe (2000 for the US).
@ZebZed god yeah agreed, I'd much prefer just a simple chat with more of a focus on clean UI than half-assed personalization of bad plasticky character models
@Ironcore It was in a poketips video. It was a pc game I think
@ZebZed @cinderace wow yeah thats horrifying
@Ironcore it’s called Pokémon play it.
Dreading this finally coming out, maybe it will be great, but I doubt it will be as generous as TGCO in that you don't have to spend a dime in TGCO you don't want to. Also not too keen on your unopened packs not transferring. I've got a few more card boxes to open and redeem before the transition. I hope the cosmetic items for the card boxes and sleeves stick around.
Let's just hope the players aren't beaten with clubs for their insolence and gaul to play such a game.
Can Pokemon stop making bad choices even once during this generation? (Arceus, New Snap, and Unite don't count)
@Joeynator3000 On Magic the Gathering 2013 I have 3640 matches. I only lost 23 (Xbox Live). No cheat. I play Magic since 1995 (physical cards). To win, 90% is building your deck. The weak and fast (low cost) cards are your pawns (as in chess). They exist to lay out a plan that allows you to bring in the strong and rare cards. If you don't manage your deck well, you won't win. I love Shadowverse because it allows you to do a lot of strategies. The game is perfect. And Magic the Gathering is way better than Pokemon and Yu Gi OH. Magic is simply the pinnacle of perfection. There's nothing to overcome it. It's impossible! If you like card games, try again! Try SNK vs CAPCOM Card Game! You´ll have a lot fun!
Models looks disgusting, hope its not a ptw (probably is), on the phone it looks cluttered.
Just played Pokemon TCG live, and yeah, still not appealing to me.
Honestly I just want another Pokemon Trading card game like the Gameboy Colour game. That includes a story/goal. (Like earning badges, etc.)
@Liam_Doolan I'm a little confused. Is this connected to the TCGO app that is already available on tablets and desktops? I doubt it, but will any of those cards be able to transfer over?
Cant wait to try this. It will be tough to beat Pokémon Trading Card (GBC) Game Multiplayer though
Still don't understand that Pokemon TCG isn't on switch....
@B_Lindz
TCG Live will replace TGCO shortly, they haven't given a specific date as to when it will go live, but they are currently sunsetting TGCO. Your current TGCO assets will transfer over to the new platform, baring some restrictions with card quantities, deck lists, cosmetic items, and certain older packs. You can check the details out on the support website if you search 'Pokemon TCGO Sunsetting' in your search engine of choice.
just put this on Switch already as a free to play title makes so much sense no reason not to
I had no idea they were getting rid of the old one. I actually enjoyed playing it there for a while, and I still have it on my computer and tablet.
