Who are you talking to? Tetris 99 is included with Online as a download, and Tetris is not a game about words, but abstract shapes.
As much as I'm hyped for this game, I probably won't ever go touching Tetris 99 ever again. For a Battle Royale game, it is probably the most predatory one I've played, and not in a good way.
Amazing! Nice to see that the Tetriminos keep on traveling across the Gaming Multiverse!
Even though we're not getting Hisuian Spirits for Smash, at least we're getting something.
Any excuse to go back to Tetris 99 😊
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
Awesome, gotta catch 'em all (the themes that is).
@ModdedInkling I'm struggling to understand what you mean by 'predatory'? Yeah there's €5 DLC in order to get all the modes and if you miss an event, you're kind of screwed but predatory? I'm not really understanding you in that regard, I'm sorry.
@Fizza Perhaps they meant that there is no filtration or options to play with others with similar skill levels? I know when I've played some of the events that I had very inconsistent games. Now I'm nowhere near good at the game, but there are some times where I make the top 20, and others where I get completely demolished before breaking #80. I know there's an option to target players who are struggling (the "wins" option), but more than one player targetting the same persom can make it feel pretty predatory to me T_T
@Pip_Pipston Fair enough then honestly, I've only ever won once in T99 and there have been some moments of complete BS, like getting targeted by 9 SEPARATE PEOPLE AT ONCE but personally I just take it as it goes. I revel in the chaos (I sound like a bloody supervillain saying that).
@Fizza I was once targeted by 12 people at the same time.
@BTB20 Yowza that's, uh.... oof.
@BTB20 where you targeting attackers? Because that can give that issue. Usually whenever I see a lot of attackers I quickly switch my target to "random".
@sanderev Yes, I mostly target attackers. I beat three or four of them before going down, so I'm proud of myself.
@Fizza
I was referring to the gameplay. The way that other players can target you feels very predatory.
I do agree that sometimes people can gang up on you. Once I made it to the top 7 and for no reason all of the sudden the other 6 players went against me when I hadn't even made many KOs.
As for the theme: More Pokémon themes are always nice. Come to think of it, New Pokémon Snap didn't get a theme, right?
@Pip_Pipston
Yes, that is exactly what I wanted to say. Having players gang up on you because they see half your board is filled up is a pretty predatory concept. Compare that to pretty much any other Battle Royale game where you're usually never able to see another player's health.
It also doesn't help that the amount of "damage" increases the more badges you have. I dislike the concept because it takes away the base skills needed to play Tetris.
@ModdedInkling then again the players don't really know you're "you", in the game you're just one of 99 rectangles littering the screen, if multiple people target you at once, it's:
There's very little personal element behind the mechanics of the game. In the end, pure skill is still the largest factor: even though being skilled means you become a big target, you also become dangerous to any person targeting you.
@Eel
See, that's what many other Battle Royale games don't have. In Tetris 99, you have the knowledge of who is more and who is less formidable, whereas in other games, you don't see their health bar or their weapon loadout. That is the reason I dislike Tetris 99 and believe it is predatory; it has nothing to do about whether or not something is personal, but rather which prey is the weakest. That's what I mean by predatory.
In other Battle Royale games, you have the sense of being anonymous and others will appear the same to you. There's little to no info on what your opponent has and encountering then becomes a matter of chance and skill. Not strategic skill. Combat skill.
@ModdedInkling
I'm not a good Tetris 99 player and even then i have been on top 5-10 many times.
Don't be fooled by what you see on screen.
@Ventilator
It's easy to get to the top 10. It's difficult to actually win. In all my time playing, I have only gotten as far as 2nd place. Never 1st place.
@ModdedInkling Yeah. I think i know why it's hard to become #1.
You like me, probably only play it when there is a new event with new theme.
During the events, the worlds best players i back to get the new theme.
Outside events, it should be easier.
My best place were 4th.
I thought this event was last weekend (oops!) so jumped back in recently to dust of the rust. A hand full of wins on normal and my first Invictus win, I'm ready now Honestly this is my most played game on Switch, can't beat a bit of Tetris.
@ModdedInkling It’s balanced out by the fact that if you have a bunch of people attacking you then you’re going to send a ton of garbage back to each of them individually if you have it set to go for attackers (I have that setting on permanently throughout the game); you’ll notice even clearing a couple of lines will slow their attacks down as they try to clear the garbage you’ve sent back. I mess up my board intentionally as soon as the game starts so I get targeted by a ton of people then wipe a few out easily for some badges with how much trash I’m sending back. You’ve really just got to put the time into it so when the pressure is put on you you can clear your board rationally.
@Laserbeak1982 Same here, most played game on Switch and it’s not even close! Would put it in my top 10 favourite games of all time honestly, which is sad because there’ll come a time where it’s just not playable any more outside of playing CPUs 😩
@larryisaman
Of course, the amount of players you're up against should multiply how much you send back. However, that's what it should be, without any badges to consider. It should just multiply your base damage rather than factor in any badges you have from previous players.
In a scenario like the top 10, where there are a lot of 1v1s flying around, one player can deal a lot more damage than another just because of the number of badges, rather than how many players are targeting them. That's why I think it's not fair.
@ModdedInkling It does multiply your base damage. If you have no badges yet but have 10 people ganged up on you you will send loads more trash to each person than you would if just 1 or 2 people were targeting you etc.
It is tough when you get to the top 10 and have no badges but that’s why it’s important to be aggressive in the early game and try and build up as many badges as you can, of course more badges means you’re more of a target it’s balanced out by the damage you’ll deal out
K.. just give me an hour.
This is one of the worst ones… mild music… meh design and I CANT SEE A THING!
Yeah, definitely the worst one in the whole game. Who chose that color palette?
@fafonio I'm glad it's not just me, the background was so busy and used similar colours to the Tetrominoes that I was permanently struggling to see. It's got to be the worst theme yet.
I've gone straight back to the Splatoon one as that's always been the easiest on my eyes.
@ModdedInkling There is absolutely no skill in games like Fortnite or PUBG, you can literally camp and wait for the other 97 people to kill each other and then go after the last one.
It's purely luck based.
Tetris 99 requires you to have a high multiplayer Tetris skill. Because the garbage piles up more slowly if your screen is filled up 2/3 or more. Meaning you could completely destroy your opponents if you know how to do T-spins correctly.
Which would give you more badges and that allows people targeting badges to level the battlefield. You absolutely can do a "camping" like technique as well. By targeting only one person at a time and not removing multiple lines if you don't have any garbage coming. I used that trick one time to actually become the winner. (I have now won the game multiple times, using different techniques) However unlike other BR games, this does take some skill, because you do have to clear the garbage coming to you.
Really adore this one honestly. There's a nice zen feeling to it all at the beginning with probably one of the best Pokemon songs ever made (It may be too early to tell but still), and then it just kicks into overdrive at the 50 mark. The themed details like Poke Dolls being the badges and Voltorb being the KO marker are really nice as well.
The only complaint I have really is that, because of the background used, it can sometimes be hard to see the empty spaces from the filled ones but that's really it. Incredible.
I haven't really kept up with Tetris 99, but have there been any events that AREN'T marketing something else?
Just earned the theme this morning.
Always a lot og really strong players coming back to play when a new theme is up for grabs, so I had to fight to get my 100 points. ^^
Worst theme yet, can’t see the bricks at all! Who approves these? Sheesh.
@rio_j They have GOT to be kidding. Agreed: This is the worst theme ever. The artwork is lovely, but it's so difficult to differentiate between the blocks, the garbage and the background. I can't play if I can't see what I'm doing. And the music sounds like a violinist tuning up before a recital. Patch, please?
I would play Tetris 99 this weekend except I honestly give no f's about Pokemon
Why are the bricks, including the grey ones, so translucent? I can barely see the differences and have been placing so many the wrong way or in poor positions. They go solid for (I think) the final 10 players. Once I got the theme I reverted to my old one, currently Metroid. Previously it was Donkey Kong.,
@HalBailman @Burning_Spear @rio_j Such a shame. You need to make split-second decisions, but can’t quickly see where the gaps are in the bricks from the bottom.
@Zebetite Early on they had a few events that let you play for gold points.
@Tandy255 And the particle effects for multi-line clears can be a problem. You have to pause a second or so to get a clear look at the screen. They really don't need to be so fancy.
I don’t think anyone playing Tetris 99 is clicking on your box to attack you. People may be going for KOs which target people who’s boards are high, but that also is a big gameplay mechanic for the top level players who intentionally stack their boards so they are targeted and can get KOs. It’s so random I don’t know how someone could feel personally attacked while playing.
