Today's the day, folks: Pokémon Legends: Arceus is out now on Nintendo Switch!
A game that several critics have already described as being one of the greatest in the franchise's history, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is undeniably one of the series' most intriguing releases to date. Doing away with Pokémon's tried and trusted formula, this latest game is taking the series in a new direction, and it sounds like plenty of fans are already on board.
If you missed it, we said that Legends: Arceus is "quite simply one of the greatest Pokémon games ever made" in our full review. We'd certainly argue it's worth your time, but it'd only be natural to be hesitant about trying something new – and that's where our launch day poll comes in.
So, we hand it over to you. Will you be buying the game? Do you love every Pokémon game there is regardless, or are you hoping this will be something a little special? Cast your votes below, and feel free to expand upon your answers in the comments.
If you've already made up your mind, you can go ahead and buy a physical copy here. Happy launch day!

Very excited for this!!!
Got my physical copy loaded in my Switch already!
Really excited to start playing it later today.
Happy to see good reviews for this game. Im getting it but not today.
Just started it up, have chosen my starter and cleared the first mission some minutes ago.
I agree that the graphics are not up to the standards you'd expect in this day and age, even on the Switch, but everything else seems pretty solid so far. Will see if it holds up in the long run.
Planning to buy this and Diamond at the same time. Then play them side by side to see which one gives the greater enjoyment. The traditional tried-and-tested formula, or the new open world with slightly different game mechanics. Have read many reviews for both but still have no idea which one will win.
The overall positive critic reception so far does raise some eyebrows but at the same time it's hard not to think those are just paid reviews. I'd also kind of prefer not to support the change from turn-based to action game, because that's just something I generally hate to see happen even if Pokemon has been very mediocre for years now.
I guess it's not entirely out of the question that I would get this at some point but I'll wait for now and see what both the critical, fan and non-fan reception ends up being once more people get their hands on it.
Have it pre-ordered and it'll be arriving in the mail today!
I was very excited for Sword/Shield when they came out, and I loved Shield to bits. ...my hype level for Legends Arceus surpasses even that!
No Money...
Bought two games this month during the sale. Never thought that the reviews were going to be so good for PLA. Maybe in a couple of months
Removed - unconstructive
@Expa0 it's still turn based combat for the Pokemon battles, though
Surprised just how many answered "I think I'll like Legends: Arceus more than past games".
I've had my doubts, but I've become more hyped as time goes on. I think I'll enjoy this one as I've enjoyed almost all main-series Pokemon games, but it remains to be seen whether I'll enjoy it more than the typical formula.
Not day one as I still want to get other games first.
Started playing it just after midnight last night when my digital version became playable. Eventually dragged myself away at 2am after completing the first couple of missions. I absolutely LOVE it so far - head and shoulders over the usual Pokemon formula. Going to go and play another bit now on my lunch break...
I know it’s not technically impressive but it’s a good shakeup the series needs and I’ve heard mostly great things about it. It’s the first Pokémon game I’ve been really excited to play in over 5 years. Hopefully Walmart delivers it today and it doesn’t get delayed!
My copy just got delivered and playing it
Anyone that calls themselves a Pokemon fan and doesn't pick this game up (unless broke) is having their Pokemon fan license revoked.
Where is that postman
I was going to wait on this game until a sale later this year, but after the final trailer and high review scores, it's become a day 1 purchase. I have not been spoiled so I'm super excited to go into this game blind!
I’m really enjoying it so far, although having to catch the same Pokémon many times could get a bit repetitive.
Was expecting this to show promise in certain areas, but ultimately fail to live up to it. I was very pleased to see how well it’s been reviewed, so picked it up at lunch. Now to get stuck in!
Can’t wait for mine 😊don’t understand people saying they’ll wait for a sale coz unless am missing somthing Pokémon games hardly ever go on sale at least not for a very long time. If you want it then just get it and support the new way forward for Pokémon.
I want to get this but it just looks so damn awful visually I don't know if I can see past that right now having spent so much time recently playing through BotW again!
Not today but I will certainly get it later this year. I already made a roadmap of upcoming planned gaming puechases and Pokémon Legends: Arceus will be for June.
My next planned purchase are Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury for February and Kirby and the Forgotten Land for March.
I'm picking it up at Walmart this morning. It's the first Pokemon game I've been excited for in a long time.
@1UP_MARIO I am about to head to work (US) so don't worry, I am on my way.
I will probably get it: but I am knee deep in Fenyx, still playing ACNH and racing games. And, I know that I want Kirby. I just gotta keep thinking about money and time available.
@frabbit It really doesn't look that bad! I'm struggling to see what all the negativity is about, to be honest... maybe I'm just not that shallow. It's not the same polish as BotW, but it's not the same graphical style, either, so I think of it more like playing a reasonably pretty anime show.
As soon as I'm able to, I'm gonna try to buy a physical copy today.
Day 1 Purchase! I'm enjoying the heck out of it on my Nintendo Switch OLED!!!
@Troll_Decimator Gatekeeping much?
Yes. I chose to skip over the last remakes for this one instead, and think it’s going to be worth the wait.
Waiting for the postman….
@Expa0 I don’t think those reviews are paid for at all. It really is very good.
I have had it pre ordered since August... now Best Buy wom;t get to to me before MONDAY AHHHHHHHHHH!!
I will never use Best Buy OR pre order again. I could have had it in my hands last night at the dang store. OR placed a new order yesterday and had it today.
By Monday I expect unavoidable spoilers all over the internet youtube, and especially here at NintendoLife.
:/
couldnt resist that himym reference, hm?
@Preposterous Trollkeeping. If you don't want this game to succeed, you don't want the IP to keep improving, hence not a fan by definition.
@psyraven76 well I’ve not played the game so don’t have a lot else to go on other than the visuals at the minute. Like I say, I want to want it but I’ve been imagining this game for 20 something years so when I finally see it and it’s not impressive to me, it’s hard to totally buy in right away. Still, glad you’re enjoying and let’s be honest, I’ll probably have it bought as soon as I finish work.
My main problem with Pokémon was just how slow it is, but this game looks much faster paced
Today is my birthday and I’m grateful for Game Freak for changing up the formula and then shipping it out to me as a present (well, a present I spent my own money on, anyway). Been faithfully playing the games since Red and Blue, and I just finished Shining Pearl two days ago. I really struggled on the Gen 4 remakes (I think Gen 4 is the low point of the series, even if it’s a high point for Pokémon design). The last time Pokemon had a big change-up was Gen 5, which is my favorite generation. Can’t wait to play Arceus. First time I’ve been so excited about a Pokémon game in my adult life, honestly (and I’m 33 as of today).
Just picked it up. Going to start playing as soon as I get home. Been excited for this game since the initial trailer, even with the jerky animations.
@Buizel I wanted to answer both this and "I enjoy most Pokémon games and think this will be no different". Both are true, I enjoy most Pokemon games but I also think I'll enjoy this one even more than those other games.
I plan on picking it up with my first paycheck, which will be a couple of weeks after. I'm going to have to try to avoid spoilers... Wish me luck.
Definitely getting it, definitely not day one, most likely before the games it's the prequel to.
I skipped over the recent remakes for this since they were getting released so close together. I am pleased so far with the changes made and that it is a much more open world style over even Sword and Shield. It's should definitely be how the series moves forward in terms of how you battle and capture pokemon as it feels more natural although in places it feels like a proof of concept for future games where they have overhauled so much of the game.
Finally.
This is first Pokémon game I've been excited about since XY, I'm glad that Pokémon are now changing up the formula a bit
This will be the first Pokemon I play.
Still not sure yet, I like all the gameplay changes it has, but it seems like the world itself wasn't designed to be interesting at all, and that's pretty bad.
Feels like a new Pokémon game comes out every month, give it a rest and release a new F Zero, Wave Race or 1080!
Here’s my hopes and dreams:
The Pokémon Legends part suggests that this is the first game of a series. There will be more games of other regions focused on a Pokémon legend. Something the magnitude of Eternatus, Zygarde, or Rayquaza
My first Pokémon game was a spin off. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon - remember that? I had Gates to Infinity, and when I got my first mainline game later (Moon), I was surprised to see how different it was. Never underestimate Pokémon outside of the core games. Play it! It’ll be worth your while!
@Royalblues Yeah, I find myself liking the IGN review because it mentions how boring and bland the world itself is and how it can make it not interesting enough to keep going.
I'll maybe get this one on a sale, but I'm definitely not interested enough to buy it full price.
I like Pokémon cards, the anime, and I enjoy having the Merch. However I own sword (including the DLC) and let’s go eevee and neither game has grabbed me. Hopefully when I get legends arceus (I’m just too busy to get it now) that will get me to actually like a Pokémon game
@Royalblues The switch’s power is certainly part of it, but BOTW looks great and the lay game runs on the switch from when it was brand new, so they didn’t even have as much time to learn how to optimize the power
@andyg1412 it’s probably because their entire company is dedicated to only making Pokémon games (besides a couple side projects)
I'm undecided. I really loved Brilliant Diamond but that was my first pokemon game. I've seen a bit of a trend amongst big reviewers of the relatively few who rated Brilliant Diamond really well rating Arceus lower. I like the art and idea of riding pokemon. But the game also looks a little repetitive/wandering aimlessly around big empty areas/grindy.
Gotta finish Shining Pearl first, so probably not day one, but the instant I do, I’m playing this game and nothing else!
Still very much on the fence, solely because of how they've been screwing up the last couple of generations in my opinion.
The graphics look terrible and the game is clearly made for kids (not neccesarily a bad thing but since they original games we're pretty tough jRPGs it's a big downgrade imo).
I'm sure there is an enjoyable game underneath but Pokémon games these days feel like comfort food, it plays good and fills the nostalgia itch fairly well but at the end of it I feel mostly regret.
I will head to BB on my lunch break.
The lack of multiplayer completely takes me out of it.
@ThomastheDankEngine you ever tried beating brock with a charmander in the original Pokémon games? It was even worse in Pokémon yellow.
This will be my first Pokémon game ever and I am excited for it!
Playing it right now, Don't let me down!
Pre-ordered and cannot be more excited to receive it in the mail! I regret not switching the order to pick up in-store; hopefully it arrives within the weekend >_<
This will probably be Pokemon's Metroid Prime moment, rather than its BOTW moment. And I'm all for the new mechanics to be incorporated into the main series proper.
Just played the first hour or so. Positively surprised. This is the most fun I've had with Pokémon for a good while and I haven't even ventured out on my own yet. Shoutout to the music and sound effects.
Started it last night and it actually feels like a proper evolution of the series!
I've been burned by Pokémon so much latrly, so I'm not head over heels on my way to buy it. I may get it eventually, if it's still getting good press after the initial hype. Maybe. Possibly. Money is going to be tight for the next... checks watch six months.
Played for about 2 hours at launch. It’s really good. Game really pops on the OLED model.
Got it at Walmart for $50. Don't pay more than that.
Performance issues aside I can’t tolerate the lack of any new multiplayer mode or coop areas. But what’s really killing it for me are the scenarios, can’t tell how much gameplay videos I’ve watched already; they look al the same, super dull and boring. Can’t understand how you can copy a game engine and make it worst in every possible way.
I'll pick up 2 copies for my daughters later today - it will be a nice snow-day surprise for them as we ride out a blizzard and wait to go sledding.
I still have so much left of other programs to finish. Ar-se-us should be the reward if I ever do.
Nope. But only because I have waaay too many games on the go right now. Still haven't finished M:Dread.
Have fun all those who are!!
The Pokémon Company ain't getting my money! #BringBackNationalDex
Not interested but this game looks like a step in the right direction for the franchise.
In the meantime my sights are on Sunbreak and maybe even Monster Hunter Stories 2 in the future.
My first Pokémon game! All the positive reviews and feedback convinced me to get it.
I tend to think of this game, as more of a Shenmue Style adventure. It is definitely more cinematic feel than other Pokémon games.
No but it really comes down an aesthetic thing. I like the idea of the game, but the feudal Japan and lack of brightness aren't my cup of tea.
I'd like it to feel more like African safari, or look more like Pokémon snap (I get the graphics couldn't be as sharp but those colors POP)
I got it digitally and stayed up a bit past my bedtime to play for an hour and a half or so.
It’s not great graphically, they need to do better for a $60 game. It takes a LOT of inspiration from Monster Hunter, with a tad from BotW and Souls. I can see it eventually getting a bit repetitive and samey if the structure doesn’t change to include dungeons/puzzles.
But if I’m honest? This is the most fun I’ve had with Pokémon since I was a teenager. I absolutely LOVE what they have done here, and I NEVER want to go back to the old style(outside of faithful remakes, but even then). It’s just so satisfying. I finally care about the story. I finally really want to fill out the Pokédex, including all those challenges/quest. I love the atmosphere, the mystery, the brutality. It may not be a groundbreaking video game, but damn if this isn’t the most exciting Pokémon game since Gen 2.
Mine arrived this morning, it is now half past midnight and I could happily play it all night. I don't know if I'm just old (got into pokemon originally because of pokemon pinball and have played most of the mainline games and spinoffs over the past 20-some years) or not fussy enough or what, but this is the most fun I've had with a pokemon game since Silver on the GBC and the most fun I've had with any game since BotW. I love the mechanics, the rumble is just right and adds so much to the experience, I could run around Hisui all day just catching pokemon and throwing them at trees, rocks etc. The areas are not empty, at least to me, they are full of pokemon and crafting materials. In short I love it, 9 out of 10 from me and the lost 1 is only because the graphics could and should have been better.
I pre-ordered it on the 25th, and I just checked tracking... It says estimated delivery is Feb 7th? WTH is that about?
Picked up my copy fro a local store for £39.99, which is a pretty decent deal, the game looks fine and runs very well, there was an update/patch which downloaded in no time at all, the visuals are very sharp, not quite getting the ugly visuals comments.
I plan on getting my copy in February because it's Pokemon Month then and so I got Monster Hunter Stories 2 to save my next cheque for it. February is Pokemon Month and I wanted it to nice closer to Pokemon Day.
No. I don´t have fun with pokemon games.
