Don't get us wrong, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is an amazing game and arguably the best entry in the series to date, but it's an enhanced port of a 2014 Wii U title - meaning we've technically been playing the same game for a very long time now.
Fortunately, Nintendo might finally be readying itself to reveal a new entry - with claims from industry analyst Dr. Serkan Toto earlier this week that "Mario Kart 9" is now in "active development", and could be teased at some point in 2022. As usual, the latest game is expected to come with a "new twist" and that last part is what's sent the internet and social media into overdrive.
If Mario Kart history tells us anything, it's more likely to be a new in-game mechanic or gimmick of sorts, but that hasn't stopped one other idea from gaining traction online: Nintendo Kart.
Now, once again, this is all just fan speculation, but after the introduction of themed tracks and characters like Link from The Legend of Zelda, the Inklings from Splatoon and Isabelle from Animal Crossing in MK8 - many fans are starting to believe the next Mario Kart game could have a Super Smash Bros. moment and simply feature every Nintendo franchise.
Over on Twitter, the hashtag 'Nintendo Kart' has generated around 10,000 tweets. Here's what some are saying about it:
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is Nintendo's top Switch game - selling more than 38 million units worldwide as of September 30, 2021.
With this in mind, if "Nintendo Kart" did end up becoming a thing at some point in the future, we can't see the company moving away from Mario Kart's strong branding. Looking at all of this in a more positive light, Nintendo could also perhaps use an "all-star" Mario Kart game to introduce even more people to other Nintendo series.
What are your own thoughts about this? Would you like to see Mario Kart eventually become Nintendo Kart? Tell us below.

Well Mario Kart 8 already set off down this road with Zelda, F-Zero and Animal Crossing content, so it's not hard to imagine them expanding upon it
Give us Super Crash Bros!
One things for sure Waluigi won't be involved.🤣
I took a ‘twist’ as a gaming mechanic twist, not just stuffing guest characters in. Personally I’d like to see them do Mario Kart cross country/gum ball rally where you race across different mushroom kingdom maps instead of going in circles on laps. It would definitely be different than 8.
8 years since the last new Mario kart entry.
A lack of new AAA in house studio games on the switch for some time now.
Nintendo I thought the plan was and you said this, only having one single console to make games for would bring more AAA in house studio games to the Switch. Get your dam act together and start producing them.
It seems when Nintendo get very good console sales success they slow down on AAA in house produced games, like they rest on their laurels and possibly think well we don’t need to, we are selling millions of consoles so why bother.
I wish the PS5 and Series X did not have supply issues over the last year and going into 2022, it may have made Nintendo think if those consoles had sold maybe double what they have.
Nintendo in one had you make amazing games that I have enjoyed over the decades, on the other hand you seem to drop in house AAA game production, which I think nowadays is controlled by the suits and the financial suits to maximise company profits.
I hope they stick to Mario kart if they release a new entry. I don't want to wait for every player to choose between 130 characters before each race.
I’d like to see a huge open world game like Burnout Paradise.
I'd like to see an F ZERO game, but sure have more Mario Kart instead.
Sigh.
I give up.
Cries uncontrollably
Lol i really dont like the name "Nintendo kart"
Nintendo"s All-star racing.
@Dezzy70,
There are lots of first party games on the Switch, in fact Mario kart is one of the only AAA first party Nintendo games to not get a new installment on the new console, and of course the success of Mario Kart 8 is to blame for this more than anything else.
You do seem to ignore the global pandemic which has been going on for quite a while now, and still has very little sign that it's coming to an end, perhaps Nintendo's in house teams have been hit much harder than other developers, but pretty much everyone has been affected by it.
Rather have Mario Kart than Nintendo Kart. It worked for Smash but just putting all their ips in all their games is gonna devalue them all
Nintendo Kart is a logical step. And perfectly okay if it means we sidestep a game with even more baby and metal racers.
@MrGawain Exactly what I was thinking, the original rumour stated that there was a new racing twist, not sure how it has blown up to mean this Nintendo Kart thing? A lot of people are going to be disappointed that the thing they made up in their own heads is probably not going to happen! Such is the internet.
@johnvboy
Yes in the switch early days and I have played all of them, remember in house AAA games not second party. Games like the outstanding BOTW, Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2.
These were all in the early switch days. It has been very quiet for a good while in house studio wise.
Yes covid has effected the industry but other studios are releasing top end AAA games.
Nintendo in house teams must be small in reality by other studios standards.
Perhaps they need to employ more, with all those Switch profits and other game related profits they make.
@johnvboy
This is also where Nintendo have a problem making a more powerful console.
If they released a Switch 2 as powerful as a PS4.
The expectation would be pure graphical beauty of say god of war or horizon zero dawn.
They would never get the game finished or produced with that level of graphical detail. That takes a lot artists and graphical work and personnel.
Of course I would love a 3d Mario game or Zelda with that level of detail true 4k, hdr, high res textures etc.
Not that there is anything wrong with BOTW or Mario Odyssey on the existing Switch, amazing games.
It will interesting to see where Nintendo go in the next 2 years console power wise and in house studio size wise in terms of employment.
'Nintendo Kart' is such a boring idea. Because 90+% of the current Mario roster is going to be shelved in favour of other popular franchises. At least now there's a stark difference between MK and Smash. Nintendo Kart is just Smash but racing instead.
The Mario franchise itself has enough characters to fill a roster on its own, so there's no reason to change that.
Even looking at the roster of MK8, it's missing characters such as Birdo, Captain Toad, Nabbit, Prof. E. Gadd, etc. They've recently also introduced a bunch of new characters with Mario Odyssey, albeit a bunch of boring rabbit clones, but the point is that there's enough variety without the rest of Nintendo's franchises.
@Dezzy70 So you are choosing to ignore both the first party games that have come out recently such as Animal Crossing, Dread and warioware and also the huge amount of games coming out next year too such as Zelda Kirby Pokemon Splatoon and who knows what else.
As for mario kart, I think it will always stay named Mario Kart, despite having lots of guest characters. Maybe the next game will be called Super Mario Kart and will have lots of past and new courses available.
*edit, Super Mario Kart 9 of course. I am aware there is already Super Mario Kart.
People never learn...
Mario Kart branding is way too strong and Nintendo don't have a lot of eponymous games so I really don't see that at all
Let's just have Mario Kart Maker and be done with it.
Wow, that tweet with all the mario characters made me realise i’m not a true mario fan….? So many characters I do not know the name of. Or have seen ever.
Tis foolhardy!
Just change the name into Nintendo Kart since Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has some other characters from different Nintendo IP.
I really, really hope not. The roster needs an upheaval but only to remove a bunch of babies and duplicates, to be replaced with other Mario-verse characters (Pauline, E.Gadd, Nabbit etc).
Hopefully the new twist is gameplay related only.
@Zeldinion
Are those you mentioned, in house AAA developed games or 2nd party development studios.
Metroid is Mercury Systems for sure a Spanish developer.
Warioware is usually subbed out to produce.
Animal crossing yes in house.
So there you go, see people mix up the intertwined in house studios with 2nd party because Nintendo usually always publish the 2nd party games so it looks like they have made them.
Kirby is Hal Laboratories yes now owned by Nintendo, but an independent out of house studio.
I guess their in house teams are just small.
When you think say Naughty dog have about 600 employees alone as a single studio and say Ubisoft have 18 thousand.
However Nintendo have about 6 thousand but they definitely not working on new in house AAA games
I would love to know how many Nintendo staff are actually working on game development.
It could work, but I wouldn't be disappointed if Mario Kart stays primarily about Mario's universe with a few guest characters and locations a la MK8. If there's anything from Smash Ultimate that should be copied for Mario Kart, it should probably be "every track ever".
I'd guess that the "twist" is more likely to be to do with the mechanics. Transforming vehicles is my guess, like karts which can shapeshift into planes or boats during races. This is already sort of teased in MK8 with its heavy emphasis on gliding and the possibility of driving underwater.
I'm also in the "Nintendo Kart" not being such a hot idea camp.
It sounds good on paper, but we're going to risk making Nintendo's own games feel a little generic if every game with a roster becomes an "All Stars" affair.
Why have Mario Golf when we can have Nintendo Golf? Why bother with Mario Tennis when we can have Nintendo Tennis? etc.
A few guest appearances a la Animal Crossing, F-Zero, and Zelda in MK8 is very much welcome, but I think they should leave it at that.
With that said, a Nintendo Land sequel is long overdue.
Please all don’t get me wrong I’m not trolling about lack of in house AAA switch games.
I have been with Nintendo since the NES and yes I had a WII U.
When you been with Nintendo that long and invested money and time, you notice sometimes patterns of AAA in house development game releases and see they do slack off if a console is selling really really well.
I am not getting to excited as we probably won’t see a new Mario kart until 2024.
However going on past history I have a feeling we may see the Switch replacement in March 2023 with BOTW2 for exciting Switch and it’s replacement.
It worked well with Wii to WiiU and wiiU to Switch.
Also being honest with the new generation from Sony and Microsoft and third party games the Swtich is looking extra under powered now and will start to lose third party support as the gap in power is even greater, so 2023 for Switch replacement with BOTW2 as a release game is my prediction.
Nintendo like to surprise now and again.
Point for more obscure Mario characters to appear: I want to play as Fawful so badly it HURTS.
Point for more crossover characters to appear: Samus Aran. Nuff said.
I’ll stick with Mario Kart 8, good enough for me.
@Dezzy70 I honestly can't see Nintendo making no exclusive Zelda games for two generations in a row. With the Wii U it made sense since the hardware failed horribly, at least in a commercial sense, but Switch is what? The second best-selling Nintendo console ever and is extremely close to becoming their most successful console ever released, so not releasing at least one exclusive Zelda game makes absolutely no sense. And no, the Hyrule Warriors sequel doesn't count as it's a Musou game NOT an actual Zelda series game.
They could just add characters and say 12 tracks to Mario kart 8 and maybe a new weapon or two.
It would keep a trend with the other games on other consoles say like Destiny 2 and Halo Infinite that just more context to the existing game.
This could be Nintendos game that just keeps getting added to content wise.
I don’t think they could go wrong either way. Mario Kart is such a diverse world, between real world and mushroom kingdom, there’s no doubt still plenty of room for new and interesting course ideas.
However, ‘Nintendo Kart’ would push the envelope even further with amazing results. Courses from worlds like Kirby and Pikmin. Zelda death mountain would make a great course.
the twist for Mario Kart 9 is a open world Mario Kart.
Well they could include franchises like pokemon, Kirby and third party characters like with smash.
also Nintendo is not stupid to release another mainline Mario Kart game on Switch, when Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling well, expect Mario Kart 9 only on Switch sucessor.
@TowaHerschel7
I agree I want BOTW2 this year 2022
But as always time will tell.
I hope the new Kirby game is going to be top notch AAA by Hal, we need a new AAA platform game.
I was expecting a Mario Odyssey 2 by now like we had with Mario galaxy 1 and 2 on the Wii.
That’s why I moan about lack of Nintendo in house AAA games, they seem to have slacked off.
@TowaHerschel7
Did you know there was 3 years between Mario galaxy 1 and 2 on the Wii and also they had the hand held console to make games for as well and the Wii motion control to programme for.
See everyone that’s why I moan Nintendo in house studios slacking off.
I think Nintendo Kart is a bad idea because it'd stifle Mario Kart. The settings of the tracks in Mario Kart are largely unique to Mario Kart and not actual Mario Locations.
The idea of tracks "through various Nintendo worlds" essentially is paving over originality for derivative settings.
It's safe to assume all of Nintendo's major series are in active development at all times, so that's hardly news.
I'm sure I'll buy it and enjoy it regardless of when it comes out
i want a open word like need for speed series
So it's for the next console...like we always knew! More than likely a launch title (coz they know what they are doing.) points to it being a couple of years away.
It’s not the audience’s job. Let’s leave art to the artists, we can vote on it when they’re done.
I like Nintendo for their original and left-field ideas. What fans suggest sounds awful and like a mess, mostly.
Mario Kart Ultimate with every course from every Mario Kart game and the ability to create your own custom cup. That’ll do nicely, for me.
I'd much rather they keep doing Mario Kart too rather than Nintendo Kart. I enjoyed the guest characters so far but as already stated there's still so much they can do with Mario Kart as a whole, even if just on the character roster there's still a ton of untapped potential that they just do not seem to want to dive into.
I'd say they can use Mario Kart as a tool to advertise the Mario side franchises. Add Koops from Paper Mario TTYD, release a remake or port of TTYD, and add character pages in Mario Kart to show where the characters come from similar to the trophies (and to a lesser extent, spirits) in Smash Bros. Such things.
Hot take: they can still call it Mario Kart even if they expand it to all of their IPs. It’s an established name and just rolls off the tongue so well.
I still don't understand the relevance of twitter comments. How about instagram posts on #mariokart?
Is there some kind of twitter sponsorship of nintendolife?
Has any fan ever suggested leaving out something? That’s the difference between the professionals making stuff and fans. Fans want more everything and don’t understand the necessity to focus. Summing up the suggestions from this thread the next MK entry would be an abomination. “Need for Nintendo Kart Complete - Open World Destruction Builder™️”.
Hopefully so. I’d be much more interested in playing as characters from the wider Nintendo world than Lemmy or Iggy.
I like the idea of Mario Kart including characters from many franchises, only if each character has unique abilities. Otherwise I don't really see the point.
Why just Nintendo Kart? Just call it Mario kart ultimate and keep the doc coming with characters and tracks not just from Nintendo IP's. Throw in final fantasy characters for example and you have the ultimate racing game that could literally never end
It will launch with the switch successor
I better keep my hype in check until Nintendo says something about it. This sounds like the Switch Pro news or Metroid Prime HD, I can see dangerous levels of anger and disappointment incoming
I'm pretty sure the "new twist" (assuming the rumor from is even true to begin with) is a new mechanic or feature akin to anti-gravity, gliders, bikes, online play, mission mode, two player per kart, etc that were introduced in previous entries. Simply putting more non-Mario characters in Mario Kart is neither new nor a twist.
@Madao
Nintendo could repeat what they did in Double Dash and gave each character their own special exclusive item to use. But again, the idea of character-exclusive items is not a new twist.
Feels like every rumor for a Nintendo game/console must be drawn out for at least a year and over multiple articles on multiple sites until it comes true.
MarioKart: Allstars kinda has a nice ring to it.. I wanna race w Zelda and Pikachu.. a Pokémon can race as good as a goomba yo
It's time for a new console, so hopefully it's for that.
Plus, I really hope they bring back Mission Mode or add some type of single player story mode, seems strange missions were in MK DS when it was a great addition, then not included in future games.
Me personally, I’d rather just keep it Mario kart. Each entry takes forever to release so we’re never in a position to feel fatigue from the same old characters or modes. We always get fresh new courses and some characters are left off and added with each new game.
I think if they did a Nintendo kart, the items would seem more out of place, like havinga zelda hook shot to grapple an opponent and hook up and smash them sounds kind of nice but I just like all the Mario items. Like playing any other kart racer like sonic or crash, the items just feel so generic in comparison, which is what I think we’d be getting more into.
The second thing, the characters from other series would either be scaled to fit the big headed Mario characters and would look strange, or be kept as is and then you’d lose the Mario look and consistency.
Either way it’d be a good game and I’ll buy it, I just think Mario kart, is where it’s at. Changing to Nintendo kart would not destroy this series at all, and I’m sure I’d have my fun with it.
Hype responsibly folks.
I just want Air Ride tbh.
I'd like to see a VR mode. Or bringing back 2 players in 1 kart like in Double Dash. Or a rally mode where the course can change and so you have to read the direction signs and adapt.
What if the twist is micro transactions and always online?! Give us Mario Kart Tour on the Switch but charge us $120 just to pay for more content! Oh and NFT’s!! That would be perfect!
I think it's very likely that this is indeed the "new twist". The DLC characters, karts, and courses for MK8 were hugely popular and well-received; Nintendo knows full well there's an immense opportunity here. Even the rumored "Mario Kart: Crossroads" title would be fitting if the franchise expanded to include more Nintendo (and maybe even third-party, per Smash) IPs.
@Meteoroid exactly this. Nintendo hasn’t made a AAA game in almost two decades. They could literally make a game with Mario punching a button that says “give me money” and they would charge $60 for it.
EA is literally the only good game company anymore.
don't mind expanding the roster, but to me they gotta make sense for Mario Kart. Kirby, smaller size pokemon, Fox, and similar could work. scary thought as it is, wonder if they'll add the rabbid versions as alts.
@silverninja honestly mk8 is very bloated. Too many tracks and toons no one cares about. They need to go back to their roots and have maybe three total toons and two tracks. I still haven’t made it through mk8’s story mode and it’s been 12 years!?
While Nintendo Kart is a good idea, I don’t want them doing too much too fast in regards to new ideas. I would just expand on 8’s DLC and add a few more Nintendo reps in terms of tracks and characters, like Metroid, Pokémon, Pikmin, or Star Fox. I feel like the big “Nintendo Kart” shouldn’t even be a karting game at all. It should be a sub-series, and full of big cutscenes like Subspace. (and other jokes I can tell myself)
@NintendoWife LMAO, I made the same point yesterday. Ask anyone what they want for a sequel, and it's always more, bigger, larger. I guess people really prefer quantity over quality after all.
@Meteoroid
I will play my Sony AAA exclusives this year starting February 2022.
Hang on are Sony not a Japanese company that have grown their developer base and number of employees.
And I will play my Nintendo AAA exclusives when they finally release them, as simple as that.
You would thought out of all the big three Nintendo being the real game company, they would have the biggest set up and most AAA games as that is their business.
All I was saying is they take so dam long especially as graphically they probably need half or less for the effects or time as they are simple graphical games compared to say HFW.
You lot on here just love making excuses for Nintendo and the fact the SUITS are running the show their now and not the gaming passionate team.
I have been with Nintendo since the NES days so I have a right to speak my honest opinion, it’s just fan boys can’t hear a bad word or negative opinion about Nintendo.
What in god’s name made you think we care about this
@Meteoroid
I totally agree Nintendo don’t want a big super powerful console say even PS4 power as it would take them over 10 years to get an in-house AAA game out with that graphically fidelity.
But they need to stay third party relevant to some degree, which they did for a long while with the switch, but it will start to drop off now as the gap between the Switch power and PS5 and Series X power wise is massive and it will get more harder for developers to bring the game down to Switch level.
So ok release a slightly more powerful console than the Switch but get your in house development making a steady stream of AAA games throughout the consoles life not just the first two years.
@Octane Seriously, they could cut back the roster to 8, I wouldn't mind if it plays great. That's the other funny bit - how everybody has this fixation on characters in a game where they don't even make much of a difference! What matters in a MK game are the physics and feel and the tracks of course. Double Dash was so exact and tight! That's the kind of stuff I'm looking forward to.
I'm in the camp of welcoming more guest characters, but keeping the setting Mario-centric. The Mario world just has that charm that's perfect for the series. It wouldn't be the same with gritty Metroid or Fire Emblem tracks mixed in, or Koopa shells replaced by Arwing lasers, etc.
I just want to see Power Suit Samus or Captain Falcon squeezed into a regular go-kart, because that would be hilarious.
Surely the popularity of Forza Horizon can't have escaped Nintendo?
Mario Kart World seems like such an obvious concept: separate tracks joined together by an overworld full of places to explore, collectables to gather and quests to complete.
I want an open world adventure but not like a regular ol car game, like NFS or whatever, that would be super boring. I want an open world like Diddy Kong Racing but much larger and more complex of course. I don't want all the courses to all be mixed in an open world that would look very odd, or just be very plain. A mix of a big map with door ways that load tracks would work the best.
@Dezzy70 AAA suck and AAA audience need to get back to their normies hobies and leave us our videogames.
Fascinating, you can see the birth of another dumb Nintendo rumour play out in real time in those tweets. One tweet turns into two tweets and the echo chamber results in news sites talking about “Nintendo Kart” like it’s an actual possibility (it isn’t), which causes people to start wishing it was a possibility (again, it isn’t), ultimately becoming let down when it doesn’t come true (it won’t).
@commentlife At the very least Mario Kart 9 will happen eventually somewhere in this decade. That's how dumb rumours begin
Nintendo Kart won't happen, and then the fans who whipped themselves into a frenzy will get mad at Nintendo for not doing what they imagined. It's the switch pro all over again. Why do Nintendo fans do this to themselves? They're the only fanbase that I've seen consistently lie to themselves and then get angry when the lies, that they made up themselves, turn out not to be real.
@Dezzy70 Nintendo already has an exit door with the Cloud version games experimented by some third parties. Since every tech giant already push in that direction, Nintendo will survive without an all powerful hardware.
@Zebetite And why would Nintendo even make a Mario Kart right now ? MK8 deluxe is STILL on the top games sold. An MK9 will only cannibalize on that.
I hope it’s true, the time is right to release a new Mario Kart.
Maybe the new gimmick could be for every race that one half of the pack starts the track normal, and the other half starts the track in reverse.
So every time in the middle of the race there's a big confrontation where all players have a window of oppurtunity to have a shot at everyone.
I don't think adding in other Nintendo IPs would really be much of a shakeup, I think the "new twist" is more of a gameplay related twist.
I'm in the camp of this being an open world game. Open world is hugely popular, several of the Switch's best sellers are open world games, and it would be so different from MK8D that it wouldn't cannibalize it so we don't have to wait an eternity and a half for the next console to play it.
@Kamalen They’re surely making it right now, but won’t release it before the next system. As you say, it’s still selling like crazy, attach ratio of almost 50%. It has a decent chance to overtake Super Mario Bros as the #6 bestselling game ever (according to Wikipedia’s list of all-time bestsellers).
@Dezzy70
"Slacking off" dang dude, the switch has tons of AAA awesome games and you're over here talking nintendoom.
@Dezzy70 your issue is that you are very self centered, you think that because none of the other games appeal to you, they don't matter, it's typical for young kids to think this way but how old are you?
it isn't just about you. Other people actually exist 🤣
Animal Crossing
Smash Bros
Paper Mario
Luigis Mansion
Mario Party Superstars
Super Mario 3D Bowser's Fury
Metroid Dread
Even 3rd party games like No More Heroes, SMT V, Octopath Traveller and Monster Hunter Rise (all Switch Console exclusive games) exist.
You can't point at a handful of games you like and then say "Nintendo has no games"... thats just stupid.
@glaemay
Nintendo have made some of the most amazing and top end AAA games ever in gaming history over many decades.
Zelda, Mario etc etc.
Mario Kart is probably the most iconic and best selling AAA title in gaming.
What the hell are you going on about.
@Gamer_Zeus
How little you know see below:
Animal Crossing Correct in house made
Smash Bros Correct in house made.
Paper Mario NOT IN HOUSE MADE, played it ok.
Luigis Mansion NOT IN HOUSE MADE, I played it and loved it. 100 percent completed.
Mario Party Superstars NOT IN HOUSE MADE. Play it good game.
Super Mario 3D Bowser's Fury PLAYED IT ENJOYED BUT VERY SHORT, Bowser fury the rest was a remake.
Metroid Dread NOT IN HOUSE MADE IN SPAIN BY MERCURY SYSTEMS.
So see above and think better next time.
Fan boys on here, don’t say anything bad about Nintendo. That’s why they get away with a lack of big AAA in house games, they don’t have to try that hard.
@Classic603
I’m definitely not talking doom for Nintendo the switch still selling loads with little in house big AAA new games.
That means they are racking the cash in with little big AAA game development investment.
No doom for Nintendo.
@Kamalen
I know Nintendo will survive and I said they won’t make a powerful console but it will effect third party support which all helps sell a console.
They do their own thing but are not perfect and nearly lost it in the WIIU days, of which I was someone that purchased one and liked it 😊
It will be something slightly open-world with adventure elements (which is what they steering all their other properties towards). "Nintendo Kart" is literally the type of unimaginative garbage that fanboys on the internet come up with.
I've been saying this could be a thing for some years.
"Mario Kart 9: Smash!"
And I think they'd potentially release it on Switch and "Switch 2", whenever that may be... (Christmas 2023 is my guess).
Respectfully no. I like what we have right now, being mostly Mario with a sprinkling of other series' here and there. Making it Smash Bros but Mario Kart kinda kills a lot of the magic of BOTH series for me personally.
@Dezzy70 Why does it matter so much to you if a game is made by an in-house studio at Nintendo? You quite obviously play and enjoy a lot of the other games published and highlighted by Nintendo in their various directs and marketing. I just don't understand the focus on whether something was made in-house or not as some sort of important measurement, but I'm curious enough to want an answer from you
@kal_el_07241 I have no idea what you're smoking, but please, pass some here
While I do think it would be cool to see characters like Samus on the track, I kinda want Mario Kart to STAY Mario Kart. Too many non-Mario characters and tracks would make the series lose its identity in my opinion.
@Fizza I have to agree.
@Freek I know me too except I’d rather have a new wave race. Shame ninty don’t branch out a little more in variation. Instead we get 3 splatoons in relative quick succession…
It's great to see Mario Kart trending off the back of what is essentially a random guess from an "industry expert" but much like... pretty much the entirety of Nintendo's history... I do not expect the thing people claim to want (a Nintendo Kart) to align with what Nintendo actually deliver.
And I expect, as usual, what Nintendo do deliver to be all the more awesome as a result.
@UsurperKing
Because Zelda BOTW, Mario kart and Mario Odyssey are in house developed and are some of the greatest games I have ever played and of course I want more.
How about a mash up of mario Kart and mortal Kombat. Think of double dash but the player on the back of the Kart is from the mortal Kombat
If a Mario Kart 9 is in active development, they are best off saving it for the Switch's successor. Mario Kart is an evergreen title, it does its best when it's released early in a console's lifespan.
I don't expect to see anything this year.
If it truly is an all encompassing Nintendo Kart Racer, call it something like Super Smash Kart. That sounds way better than Nintendo Kart.
Please let me play as a Blargg.
I don't think Nintendo should make a "Nintendo kart", that they added some cross over characters to Mario Kart is enough for me. They should even keep those purely as DLC for a MarioKart 9 and keep the main game "Mario" focused.
I know smash bros is gone for awhile but let’s keep Mario kart different from smash bros.
I would much rather take baby and metal clones over this BS.
Nintendo could've learned a lot from CTRNF, and that includes digging deep into the back catalog. That first comment about Waluigi is the perfect argument against making this, so many Mario characters will miss their shot to make room for characters who inherently don't and can't fit the aesthetic.
@Dezzy70
You are accusing Nintendo of doing something that would not make any sense for them either.
They have multiple teams of game developers and what do you think they are doing all the time when you think they are somehow lazy? Do you think they would just sit around and do nothing?
That would literally just lose them money for no reason.
There is one thing you can be sure of here: All game developers at Nintendo are working on new games at any point in time.
8 Deluxe is a great game, but I have to admit that I'm kinda bored with it after playing it so much. I hope this rumor is true. I'm ready for a new Mario Kart.
@Gamer_Zeus Yeah not to mention Labo 01 Variety Kit, ARMS, Labo 02 Robot Kit, Labo 03 Vehicle Kit, Ring Fit Adventure, Labo 04 VR Kit, Brain Age, Mario Maker 2, Big Brain Academy, Game Builder Garage
Another day, another Twitter rumor.
I've started noticing a trend: People get their hopes up based on rumors, are crushed when it doesn't happen. Then, [Game Company Name Here] is the worst and hates their fans.
Let it happen organically...we'll see it when we see it.
@ClassicJetterz me on my way to make 50 bomb threats at Capcom hq because they didn’t announce mega man X9 today for no reason
Calling it Nintendo Kart is lame, would rather call it Super Mario + Nintendo All-Stars Racers so we get all the Mario cast along with the non-Mario cast. Also calling it racers make sense as not everyone will ride a kart, Link will ride Epona, Captain Falcon will ride the Blue Falcon, Mario will ride Sonic, Kirby will ride Wheelie, Donkey Kong will ride Rambi, Bowser will ride the Clown Copter, Pikachu will ride Tauros, Fox will ride his Landmaster, Marth will ride a horse, Pokemon Trainer will ride his bike, Yoshi will ride Poochy, Kamek will ride his broom, etc.
@Kirgo
Well I will look forward to playing them when they get released of course.
They could have been instructed to work on other slightly non related game products.
Maybe new console game engine development or involved in R&D for future things to come.
All I know is its a long time since we had an amazing AAA big in house title of say Mario Odyssey size and quality.
Don’t forget there was only 3 years between Mario galaxy 1 & 2. We are at five years nearly since Mario Odyssey. Also they only produce games for one console now. They used to make home and hand held separate console games.
Just all seems a bit long and delayed for me.
@Dezzy70 Super Mario Galaxy was an exception. There was no sequel to Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, or even Super Mario 3D Land on the same console.
If I had to guess, the only reason they made Galaxy 2 is because they wanted to play with its unique gravity/planet concepts some more.
@Specter_of-the_OLED
"Mario will ride Sonic"
Thanks for that mental image, I guess...
Get ready for half the characters being Fire Emblem! Fortunately, this is all based on internet speculation, but of course MK8 did let in a few non-Mario characters via the DLC on the Wii U. While massive cross overs can be fun as an occassional gag, if everything gets that treatment, nothing feels unique. I think they should back off and keep Karting in the Mario universe. Thanks to Odyssey, there's plenty of new environments and characters without digging into other franchises.
Nintendo core development cycle for 1st party, evergreen IPs involves a prototyping model. The make small scale games (generally 3 at a time) to explore either new gameplay or new hardware integration and pass them around the senor team. As soon as something stands out as worth developing, they greenlight a full team to start working on it.
I'm less sure of the process for new IPs, but I know for Splatoon they did all the world building first, then did much of the sound track, then developed a number of prototype games to support that word. One was a rhythm game, which we get nods to in the games that are out, one was rumoured to be a "kart" game and one, obviously, was a 3rd person competitive shooter.
And while I have no idea how this works with their farmed out games, we know it happens; they restarted Metroid Prime's development from scratch because they felt none of the prototypes were worth continuing.
As such, it's an odd thing to say a Nintendo IP is in "active development". They are basically all in development at all times, we just don't see a product until Nintendo has something they think it worth playing. It's like saying that EA is actively developing the next FIFA game. Yeah, I mean, obviously they are. The only difference is that EA is going to release that on a given date even if it's trash.
@Paddle1
Well I would love another one and it looks like the switch generation will be 7 years until 2024
So they could have done it or do it.
The really hard work is done game engine wise and some of the graphical assets apart from new ones.
They will have the engine world and level creation tools in place from the first one.
I think they don’t want to bother as Mr Switch is still selling by the bucket load. And game development does cost time, money and resources.
I mean we haven’t had new not remaster 2d Mario or new 2d or 3d Donkey Kong platformer.
If we don’t get at least one of these by say 2024 the predicated switch replacement time then they being dam super business like and saving money as the switch is still selling well.
Business model of minimum investment maximum return.
Even though it would be in house studios making the games they still pay for outsourcing of certain aspects of the games creation, like maybe the cgi or music making etc.
@Dezzy70 lol so? In what way does that prove Nintendo are lazy?
It doesn't matter that they outsource half of their development, in what way does that prove anything?
Do you even know how long game development takes? Clearly not because you're all over this topic like some crazy person shouting "Nintendoooooomed" it's ridiculous.
You also some imaginary expectations of what a software developer is capable of doing.
You seem to be seriously unaware of the current global situation which makes me wonder if you're even older than 16?
Anyway you need to chill out, Nintendo are doing just fine and they are making plenty of games, if it isn't good enough for you then stop crying and go play something else kid.
Honestly, I don't know if I want a "Nintendo Kart" game. Mario Kart 7 got kinda old for me, causing me to skip both versions of Mario Kart 8, and racing games in general tend to lose their luster for me pretty quickly, especially if there's no story or career mode.
Now, this will sound like a broken record, but I think a new F-Zero game makes more sense. What was great about GP Legend was that it had a story mode with eight characters that you could play as, each with their own storylines to play through (and some of them overlapped with each other).
Why not expand that to every character in the franchise? Also, how about the ability to upgrade your F-Zero racer with better speed, acceleration, durability, and (what I find most important) handling?
And, if you want to, how about crossovers with other Nintendo sci-fi franchises, like Star Fox, or Metroid? After all, James McCloud in F-Zero is based on James McCloud from Star Fox, and Octoman from F-Zero appeared as a boss character in Star Fox Command.
So why not include the actual Star Fox characters themselves (Fox, Falco, Slippy, Peppy, and my own personal favorite, Krystal), with F-Zero racers that look like their custom Arwings from Command? And for Metroid, Samus could have an F-Zero racer that looks like a miniature version of her Gunship.
@Gamer_Zeus
A typical Super Nintendo fan boy you are.
I said they maybe undertaking minimum investment but maximum profit, as the switch is still selling really well. That is a business model that is used in business all over the world sometimes in business.
That means in plain English, don’t spend much money making new games as the console sells lots anyway so we don’t need to. This will make us some good money.
And yes the global situation, well other studios are getting big AAA games out th door to gamers.
And yes I do know about games development, so if it takes so long how did they get Mario galaxy 1 out then 3 years later Mario galaxy 2 and also create other games for their handheld consoles.
People like you let Nintendo off the hook so no wonder they do what they do with their business model as suckers like you kiss and cuddle them every five minutes.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was not the best. The Wii U game, plus the Dlc was. Why you ask? Because the Switch version gave you all the tracks from the get go. The Wii U version had progression and it was a game in itself playing the cups and unlocking everything. That was the funnest part for me, in any racing game. Deluxe was a let down when every cup was available. Not the best, Missing what the original had.
What could the twist be? We can already drive on walls and under water. I suppose under water in space?
This would be a groundbreaking 'twist', or at least a huge step in a barely explored direction. I'd be all for it.
'Nintendo Kart' is a terrible idea, not every game has to be Smash Bros.
@Dezzy70 I mean, fair enough. Can't fault you there! At least we got the BotW sequel coming this year, so that's one for you.
First, I doubt this is the direction Nintendo is going with MK9. But you never really know. So I won't act as if it's a definite
Second, I've seen quite a few arguments against the series going in this direction. And many of the arguments are fair. I will say to those who think Nintendo would just be putting Smash Bros on wheels is seriously and egregiously not giving Nintendo the credit they deserve. They're smarter and much more creative than that.
Again, I don't think the series is going in this direction. But I think if it does, Nintendo would obviously take great care and attention in making it work and keeping the spirit of Mario Kart intact
@Seacliff Usually evergreen titles have recurring updates that add new content to keep people engaged. There has not been any new Mario Kart content since 8D released in 2017 (and even then, as a port it was mostly recycled content from the original game in 2014). The series is in desperate need of new tracks, characters, etc. to play around with, that's why you see people keep asking for MK9.
I would prefer a real cross-platform Mario Kart 9 built from scratch for next gen Switch than a more of a same MK8. Would like to see next gen features not more guest appearences from Nintendo's IP's. And Nintendo should start to invest in long term support of the games. I would like to have 10 year updates on next gen MK
If the next game has a mission mode like on DS I'll be happy. I would love to see more of Nintendo's IP's represented too, E-Gadd, Birdo, Diddy Kong, Zelda etc. Smash Bros hasn't lost it's identity by despite including many non-Nintendo characters so Mariokart needn't lose it's identity. It would just become a richer experience with more appeal. If MK8 has no more content planned, MK9 has to be epic.
@HamatoYoshi 100% second this. An open-world "Mario Kart" could be amazing. I have so many ideas for that and I want it now.
@IronMan30 You must be really missing all those articles about the switch pro then!!
They would never make Nintendo Kart, since the Mario and Mario Kart names are so iconic and famous now they would just be destroying any chance of this game selling anywhere near as much as MK8DX if they go with the Nintendo Kart name. I also just want to see them focus on bringing in Mario characters who don’t have many appearances in the main series such as WarioWare characters.
@Dezzy70
2021 was the first year since 1998 that I didn't purchase a single new Nintendo developed game. Aside from Wii U ports, where have the games been? I preferred Nintendo when they were pushing the medium forward with brave new experiences, success has sterilized them. I look forward to the end of the Switch's life cycle, they may have made a new game by then.
@dew12333 very much so.
It'd be cool, but I can see like 2 or 3 guest stars from other franchises. I can see of them pulling characters from the expanded Mario universe and characters that have been introduced since MK8's original release.
Probably still gonna buy it though.
I love the idea, as long as it doesn't get too bloated like smash bros.
Tour + 8 Deluxe + Double Dash + Smash Crossover style + maybe Live Home Circuit
