@CJD87
It is fascinating.

For my part, I think the internet was just waiting to pile on. PS5 and Xbox Series have been extremely quiet, which is where you get most of your internet trolls from (sorry not sorry). The Switch 2 build-up, trailer back in January, and now the Direct in April were the biggest things happening in the gaming sphere for quite some time.

People were ready to bombard it for the smallest things.

And as farcical as it sounds, it all boils down to 10 bucks more on MK World. That's all that was needed to start the negativity train rolling, and now the Youtubers are getting their views, forums are getting their clicks, and on and on. It's a brutal world.

Yeah I won't be able to use 120fps modes docked as my TV is only 60hz. Most people don't have a 120hz TV/monitor.

Not really a concern for me as I play almost exclusively in handheld mode anyways, and if I do play docked I'd rather have 4K 60fps.

I have a 4K TV. But I mainly game on PC at 1080p. I think the games will look good at 1080p, you'll just miss a bit of crispness. I'll be playing mostly handheld too though, myself.

The fact that the Nintendo Switch 2 game manual costs another $10 and it's digital only, when earlier we got it physical for free, really makes me question Nintendo's business decisions. The console costs over $400, and games costs between $80 and $90, I feel left out, it's almost like Nintendo now believes that only the rich people are allowed to play their newest games.

@rallydefault I know right?

I try to stay as 'objective' as possible when it comes to Nintendo / Sony / MS. I've been a huge Nintendo fan since I was kid, had a PS5 for a few years during the pandemic, and my kid has a XB series S.

But the piling on Nintendo seems really unjustified IMO. And you're right - I think Nintendo priced MK roughly 10 USD$ above what would have been 'acceptable'... and this has lead to mass backlash. IMO, if you'd be prepared to spend 70$ on a game, then 80$ wouldn't/shouldn't cause uproar? To be clear, I do actually think MKW is priced pretty steep - but I imagine most owners will get their money's worth.
I find Sony's constant re-releases and remasters (The Last of Us... again & again!) to be a bit more obnoxious.

Side-tangent... I actually wish Sony would push more out of their recently acquisitions - Housemarque for example - as opposed to constant re-releases. Returnal was probably my favorite game on PS5 and a terrific showcase for what it could do. And what have Bluepoint put out since Sony purchased them? (Perhaps they are hard at work regarding the Bloodborne full-style remake, PS6 launch title )

MS are in a strange place right now, albeit GamePass is probably the best its ever been for Day1 bangers - the new Doom looks awesome, not to mention the THPS 3/4 remake. Also they got Blue Prince last week (?)

@GrailUK yeah, I have no idea so I agree it would be nice to get an overview. But do any console reviewers own tvs that old? 😆 Personally my tv can do 120fps in theory but is also 1080.

@WaveBoy People are already complaining about Switch 2 price... I can't imagine spending more then twice the Switch 2 cost on nothing but a screen.

@skywake For me, I just think that if you re-release a game, it should come with the DLC for said game. A good amount of older games get repackaged with their DLC when they either get a port or remake. Hyrule Warriors did when it got a Switch release. Same with Horizon Zero Dawn when it got a complete edition years down the road. Monster Hunter regularly gets a cheaper edition including the G-Rank content. Atlus even includes DLC in re-releases (even though they quickly add more DLC on top of that generally speaking).

I get to an extent this whole thing is outrage farming. I don't really agree with the people who genuinely think Nintendo is doomed over this or that Nintendo is outright greedy. I just feel like for those who haven't played BotW and want to- it should just be the definitive version of the game.

I'm worried about that too. I am surprised some of the new games seem to default to 4K and I'm worried they won't look great on my old TV but I also can't buy both a Switch 2 and a new tv anytime soon.

@FishyS @GrailUK I wouldn't stress too much about it if you're not in a position to upgrade your entire setup right away. I remember reading, back when 4K Blu-rays were starting to come out, that a majority of people can't even really perceive the difference between 1080 and 4K when in motion, except under extreme conditions, something like sitting within 5 feet of an 80" screen. Same thing with frame rate; I believe there's a steep point of diminishing returns past 60 fps.

Whatever the case may be, I know that I won't be rushing out to upgrade my 7-year-old 1080, 60hz TV anytime soon, especially not for my imperfect eyesight.

@Serah to be fair, it’s more of a mini game collection mixed with a Switch 2 museum, so it’s more complex than just a simple manual. I do agree that it is silly that it’s not a pack-in and makes them come off greedy.

@VoidofLight I agree that Nintendo should ideally have discounted or packaged in their DLC with rereleases like the vast majority of other game companies out there. It’s just the unfortunate norm with them to want to charge full price.

heck on the Switch, for rereleases they often charged even more than their previous releases. Albeit they usually added in small changes or updated textures. But still.

Edit: Actually I suppose Nintendo did release Mario Kart 8 deluxe for the same price as Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U….so I don’t know. I’ll just point back to that Scott the Woz video where Nintendo’s pricing can sometimes be absurd for rereleases (aka increasing prices) and sometimes not

@imagazelle I hear ya. I'm certainly in no rush lol. It helps not really knowing much. I mean, they harp on about 4K on Youtube trailers and I'm watching at 1080p thinking it looks the same hahaha.

lol yea, Last of Us is one of my favorite games. I played that thing through on all difficulties, got everything… so cool. But this is getting ridiculous lol

@Serah
There is currently one game priced at 80 U.S. dollars. There are none at 90 U.S. dollars. What are you talking about?

Apple pursued a strategy a few years go that might be similar to what Nintendo is planning around. Anticipating fewer sales for their iPhones, the margin per device was increased. Enthusiasts should provide Nintendo with a strong opening in Q3/Q4 but next year has more uncertainty. Sales will also be affected by Nintendo listing the Nintendo Switch as a current SKU with the $300 price tag.

@GrailUK
Monitor specifically or TV?

Id recommend a 4k 120hz OLED with VRR regardless. LG C4 55" TV can be had for $1070 after tax on Greentoe (on sale elsewhere for $1199 + tax). For a monitor I'd say anything as long as it has good reviews and is 4k, 120hz with VRR. OLED monitor 32" will run you $1000 though whereas non-OLED will be less than half that price. At that point I'd just get a TV tbh. The LG C4 really is the best value on the market imo. Samsung has nice options but doesn't deliver both Dolby Vision and HDR10+. And Sony is just too expensive. The LG B4 is very similar but the price is only $200 less. And with Greentoe you can basically get the C4 for the same price. The LG G4 is a notable step up in brightness due to the superior processor but its like 50% more expensive.

This was easily my favorite Switch 2 game shown at the Direct, even more than MKW or KDB. Not more than Metroid Prime 4 but that's a Switch 2 Edition rather than specifically designed for Switch 2, and we already knew about it.

I loved Daemon X Machina but it needed good voice acting and higher production values. As a new IP though it was solid. With its success, NOW it's getting a proper entry with high end production values, quality voice acting and from what I've seen, a more interesting story. What made the first entry so fun was the gyro aiming. I'm confident Titanic Scion will also feature gyro (maybe even mouse mode?).

4K is the least important part but it does make a difference despite the people parroting "people can't tell the difference" bits. The not telling the difference thing does hold true somewhat for real world content or animated movies mastered to the highest image quality. Games are not that though. Also it's impossible to get a decent TV that isn't 4K these days so you're getting 4K regardless

What actually matters here but is 120Hz, HDR and VRR. So what is do first is rule out any screen that doesn't support VRR at 120Hz. I know some cheaper Samsungs for example are only 60Hz so run away from those. But what also matters is the minimum VRR range, you want it to go sub 30Hz especially given this will be for a portable console that may well have games targeting 30fps. Rtings is a good resource for finding that stuff out

Then the last thing is HDR. Realistically what you want here is high contrast. Bright highlights, deep blacks. IMO deep blacks matter more because you can usually reduce the ambient light in a room. For that reason OLED is generally king because it can turn the pixels off entirely. The other thing to consider is local dimming. Just be aware of the number of zones as cheaper implementations of local dimming will have a grey splodge appear around bright objects on the screen. Probably not something that'll matter in a very vibrant game like DK, but Metroid is going to be a test

As others have suggested I think LG OLED is a fairly safe bet. It's also what I landed on. The only issue with it is that it's a bit more expensive than LCD options (although less than it used to be). For LCD TBH I haven't been keeping track of it. I was a fan of Sony's panels although just be aware with Sony that they did drag their feet supporting a full array of high speed HDMI ports (seems Sony for some reason thinks you only need to plug one modern device in to your TV)

Generally but as long as you buy for screen quality not size you can't go too wrong. My recommendation is always to get the nicest series set and go smaller until the price is acceptable rather than try and just aiming for the biggest screen your budget can afford

So, how we feeling about US preorders? Think they'll announce a new date next week? (I know it's still May for the Nintendo Store preorders, but I'm talking about retailer preorders, like Amazon, best buy, etc)

The Nintendo website still says 'Check back soon for retailer availability'. It's certainly possible they'll give us more information after the next direct or they could be waiting until closer to May 8; I don't think anyone knows. I wouldn't be shocked if they waited some more weeks until the Tariff situation gets a little more settled down or at least near-term predictable.
