The enhanced version of Quake is easily one of the retro highlights of 2021, and it just keeps getting better - with Bethesda and its developers rolling out the second major update for all platforms, including the Nintendo Switch.
The highlights of 'Update 2' are Horde Mode - made by the team at MachineGames (Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus). This mode includes 1-4 player co-op as well as optional bots. And if that wasn't enough, there's also a new free add-on 'Honey' - "an atmospheric trip through a fog-laden village with a dark secret beneath the surface". Last but not least are some quality of life improvements and bug fixes.
There are also a few bug fixes specific to the Nintendo Switch version of the game. Here are the details in full, courtesy of Bethesda's official website:

Dang thats a lot
That's a pretty good update. Quake was very much a surprise this year and this just keeps on giving. Gonna get this soon.
(Also, I'm interested in Quake Champions again. Might play it for the first time soon! Maybe they could port that one to Switch???)
I have Quake and Quake Champions on PC, might have to grab the skin there. Looking forward to the update when it comes to Doom Eternal on Switch, and the new add-on looks good.
Why doesn’t either quake or doom have local wireless play? Aren’t these the perfect LAN party games?
This game is absurdly good on the switch. Maybe the best adaptation of the gyro controls so far.
I might pick the game up if or when they add the cheats from the original, but for now, I'm not interested. When playing old games like this, I prefer to run at hordes of enemies with guns blazing and not have to worry about health or ammo.
Quake is king of FPS
Would've bought quake on switch but I don't want to have to pay for NSO to play multiplayer
This is sweet. Remastered games getting updated with a brand new mode isn't something you see very often.
Oh they fixed the sluggish gyro controls since I last played as well, nice.
Nevermind, they're still wonky, guess it has been that long since I played.
Overall it's been quite impressive how much they are adding to this and for the amount of content you get for the price if you like this kind of game I can't see why you wouldn't get it.
GTA trilogy update is also live if somebody's interested.
@Slowdive Wolfenstein would be awesome but not the same without the map editor. It was so simple to use, I remember being a kid and making maps for my dad to try and vice versa.
I'm pleasantly surprised that Bethesda provides console mods for Doom and Quake, but I wonder why there are still no mods for Skyrim!
@chipia While Skyrim runs fairly well on Switch, it's still fairly pushing the systems limits, and I imagine Bethesda doesn't want to be held responsible for any mods causing poor performance in Skyrim.
after doom 1 and 2 this is the next game that is not only excellent but also gets a lot of free post launch love. there is already so much content in this package, you can play it for hundreds of hours
What’s quake like in solo player?
Shoot, I think I need to buy this now
@Stocksy it's so good! Only problem is it's a 90s fps, which means lots of looking for keys, and pressing buttons then running around the whole level looking to see what it did. GREAT fighting tho!
This game is something I didnt know I needed. It also makes me want to smash my drifting joycons D:
@Dethmunk @Divinebovine thanks for the replies. I think I played it back in the day. I just couldn’t remember how robust the solo content was. I’ve now purchased! Thanks.
So, the auto-turn for the motion controls?
Ok, anybody knows the version number? I am on 1.4.4 but did not have an update as an option to download. What am I missing or am I already on the latest version?
@Liam_Doolan You spelled my friend's name wrong! It's "Grawert" with a "T"
For real and I haven't gotten my LRG CE yet...
New add on is called Honey? Please tell me it also automatically finds and applies coupon codes when I shop on the eshop!
Seriously though, this is an awesome update
This be good............That ranger skin lookin good too
@Quantaur the mods are not on the eshop you have to download Honey and Quake 64 through the game itself after logging in to a Bethesda account.
@Zenszulu
r/wooosh!
Ah, I'm sorry, I couldn't resist! I'm guessing you haven't heard of the Honey app/add on for web browsers? It's designed to automatically search for coupons/lower prices of goods you order through places like Amazon. I see it advertised frequently, so I couldn't help but make a joke about this add on being called Honey not only adds a campaign, but also somehow searches for the best deals online. Just a simple joke.
I was so disappointed with the lack of control options on the Switch. After the previous update, I was much happier. Now that they have fixed the controller option value bug, I am super hyped. Nice work!
@Asaki No, the patch notes did:
https://bethesda.net/en/article/3rYFUPEADaMtS2W4WBLui9/quake-update-2-release-notes-december-2
@Would_you_kindly
Is that definite? I'm the same but I read somewhere it has dedicated online servers so was hoping you could play it online without an NSO subscription.
@Liam_Doolan Oh, whoops!
@6thHorizon yeah it says online play requires paid online membership
Bravo! Bethesda and their partners do the classic 90s "boomer shooters" right! All this for only 10 bucks. If you're at all a fan of Quake, you would be a fool not to pick this up off the eShop. Same applies to all of their excellent releases of the Doom series.
@Little_Squee Is it actually worth the money now or is it still a hot mess?
@vio You may want to wait a little more. They'd probably release another patch before Xmas. It's definitely not unplayable of now but it is clearly not enjoyable... especially San Andreas. You get 4 stars of heat and frame rate begins to take frequent dips, draw distance goes bad. It feels like you are playing a beta version of the game.
I just discovered that you can now turn off that fugly CRT filter on Quake 64!
@Little_Squee Thank you for the heads up. I figured it still had a lot of problems. I think it's going to take months to completely fix all 3 games.
Does quake or dusk have ingame chat?
@Funkensour Quake does, but Dusk does not because it is single player only.
