Last week, we spoke about the debut episode of the new season of the UK video game show GamesMaster – and today sees the release of the second episode.
It's full of good stuff once more, including a unique challenge in which a winner of a Golden Joystick in the original 1990 run of the show returns to claim a second trophy in the brutally diffcult Cuphead – but of particular note is this week's review segment, which focuses on the recently-released Switch OLED Model and Metroid Dread, the game it launched alongside.
Main host Robert 'Rab' Florence heaps praise on the revised system, highlighting its impressive screen, improved build quality and enhanced sound. He acknowledges that there was demand for a more powerful console, but concludes that he felt the Switch was already pretty decent, and that the OLED model represents "the very best version of what I believe is the very best games console on the market today".
While Switch certainly doesn't need any help when it comes to mainstream attention and commercial momentum, it's nice to see a show like GamesMaster truly sing the praise of the hybrid system. Perhaps the positive summary will make a few more people upgrade this Christmas – or, even better, buy their very first Switch console.
You can check out the full episode below – the Switch OLED review starts around the 32:20 mark.

How much do you think Nintendo paid them to say that
@Funneefox Probably nothing. Nintendo don’t need the press.
Not watched it yet. I liked it back in the day, but not that motivated to watch the reboot yet. Lite is the best Switch for me as its smaller and more portable, with a d-pad of sorts. An OLED Lite would be nice.
OLED should have been the Switch that was available from day 1.
The studio is dingy, the 'content creators' are cringy. The presenter is probably stingy and I sound a bit whingy. I like this new show. Hope it does well. Don't get me wrong. It's pants. But so was the original. And I'm actually happy about that.
It really is a great console. I had the Lite only before I upgraded to OLED, and man oh man it’s just a huge difference. I’ve been playing my OLED pretty much exclusively since I got it, while the PS5 sits there and collects dust!
@nessisonett *Nintendon't
@Medic_Alert I lasted about 25 seconds before I nope'd the F out.
Not a big fan of the new gamesmaster.
“D’ya remember being young and playing SNES and Tomb Raider and Sonic? We’ll here’s some gobby young people reminding you how embarrassing you looked at that age wasting their youth.”
@Medic_Alert Lol i actually gave it a chance because of your comment. I thought i would really not like this. I was right 😅. Oh well, if it brings some attention to our favorite hobby, i'm all for it! And i hope other people like it!
Thanks for the heads up, me and my other half actually really liked the first episode so will give this a watch tonight. Brought up a lot of nostalgia for the late 90s
@GrailUK I love British English. Using a word like "pants" to mean "bad" or "poor quality" is just about the most linguistically entertaining thing ever. 😂 Thanks for the smile Grail.
@Debo626 Aww, welcome
It’s not great but neither was the original series but if you’re a certain age ( 45ish ) you’ll still find it compulsive viewing.
I thought episode 2 of rebooted GM was a good amount better than the 1st
Sounds like they have turned the show into glorified marketing material.
I'm sure this will trigger some people lol
@Debo626 English is British...... Kinda in the name..... England 😬
@Iggy-Koopa they meant as opposed to American English....
Who? Why does it feel like this is the cliff and the switch is looking over it? Not much to say but the obvious. If the Pro keeps slipping away so will this site.
Heap big praise, by Toutatis.
@Thatsalie I approve your comment for having zero basis in reality whatsoever
@Lordplops I better like it too! They know something about the Pro!
@Thatsalie
How do you post from an alternative reality? That’s seriously impressive.
"of what I believe is the very best games console on the market today"
This guy gets it.
@Lordplops but who can say it wouldn't have cost all $400 on day 1 then?
Watched the first episode last week. Hated all the contestants, and the Cruis’n review felt weirdly out of place, but I enjoyed it overall. Nostalgic cringe.
@Debo626 We prefer to call it "Bringlish."
@Iggy-Koopa Leaving aside the semantics nightmare of "English" not being the same thing as "British," I meant it from the perspective of someone who speaks American English, an officially recognized dialect. 😁
@BloodNinja 😂 Nice. I shudder to think about the shortened version of "American English."
I honestly haven't really put the effort to watch the show as much as I thought I would, is that a bad thing? 🤷♀️🤷♀️
Great car crash t.v. I'd prefer real people as contestants but unfortunately the influencers (uh Shudder) are everywhere from strictly to the wheel. They got the look of the show right and have another British icon to replace the former GM and a weedgie as the host so 👍 for that I guess!
@nessisonett Nintendo dont need the press? Have you been living under a rock? They have been paying celebrities to advertise the switch haha.
They literally just paid, Christina Aguilera, Serena Williams, Neil Patrick Harris, Annie Murphy, Brie Larson and Jimmy Fallon to promote it an be in commercials for it.
Nintendo is 100% about the press and needs it, your comment is laughable haha. Of course Nintendo paid for this segment and praise haha.
Hell i work for a major retailer on the corporate side and they just paid us to run an instore campaign haha.
Get a clue buddy lol
@Funneefox I imagine a lot. Nintendo has spent a fortune on press recently.
Hardware limitations isn't the problem. Developers just keep forgetting their limits and end up going quantity over quality.
@earthinheritor This is Channel 4. For a show about games. This is not an advert with some Hollywood star. Would you expect them to just not talk about games as otherwise that would be an advert? Take a look at Rab literally anywhere other than the show and you’ll see he genuinely likes the Switch and openly plays and praises it. I just don’t get the point in all these f*cking saddos seeing a conspiracy where there most likely isn’t one. I might as well cancel Christmas for being commercialised and go out and throw myself in front of a truck. But no, my brain matter splattered on the Volvo logo would still class as an advert. Perhaps I’m taking little brown envelopes from Volvo.
The second episode of the rebooted GM was a lot better than the first - hope it succeeds.
@Meteoroid I like the switch but it ain’t the best gaming system that’s for sure
“OMG he loves the Switch! That’s not possible so he must be paid!”
Earth to kids, the Switch is good and people love it. I know, it’s hard to grasp.
I didn’t realise the new GamesMaster had already started and it’s on episode 2 already. I must have missed your article about the first episode. I best catch up.
I spent a good few months about 5 or 6 years ago watching every episode of the original GM series, as well as Bad Influence. I hope I enjoy this new series as much as I enjoyed watching those old ones.
@Lordplops Yeah but they had not gotten their hands on those OLED screen yet. Not only that Nintendo wasn't even sure if Switch will be a success unlike the Virtual Boy that was the Wii U.
@Debo626 That would be Amish
@BloodNinja 😂🤣 Epic.
Florence just likes the Switch, guys. He even said so on some gaming website once.

@ModdedInkling hardware limitations are a problem. Often smartphones run things better.
@ModdedInkling while hardware limitations really hold the Switch back, I can see a future for the switch as being like a Gameboy, in the sense that it offers an underpowered and cheaper alternative to develop less ambitious games. Switch could outlast PS5 in this niche 2.5d, Pokemon, Link's Awakening, Metroid Dead, low-development-time low performance games market. It would need more sturdy plastic, and they would need to fix the drift and general flimsiness of the console, but with that out of the way, people could play simple games for longer than the original gameboy. It would do better with a little performance boost so that it could run basic unity games properly, but I could see it last ages. Smartphones and tablets will always be more powerful than any iteration of switch but I would rather play a GBA game than angry birds. Underpowered handhelds are more fun to play than phones, as long as the controls work, and Nintendo will hopefully fix that issue in the future. So while hardware limitations hold switch back, in the future, this niche of simple games could be a possible advantage.
@Moistnado
While both the Switch and smartphones use very similar architecture, there are two major differences between them that shouldn't limit the Switch's capabilities.
The first is that the games on the Switch are optimized for the Switch. Many games on mobile, aside from probably Fortnite and Genshin Impact, are optimized to be played on your average phone, so there's a lot of untapped potential left out.
Secondly, cooling. It's without a doubt that the Switch's fan cooling is miles better than vapour cooling on mobile devices. There's less heat that can be released from mobile devices compared to the Switch, which in turn leaves the door open for the Switch to perform at high settings for longer periods of time.
The dock comes to mind, though I'd like to think that when the Switch gets real 4k docking, so would mobile devices, when the technology for USB-C is readily available.
@ModdedInkling I hear you, but in real life, only Nintendo 1st party games and a handful of (probably subsidized) 3rd parties like Doom 2016 are optimized for switch. Whenever reading a review on this site, it's always "Performance issues" and "targets 30fps most of the time", which is really low performance. 3rd party games generally run poorly on switch, and cost more money.
As for cooling, my Switch makes a nasty hum noise, because the fan was not built to last. Most phones already have better processors than Switch and require less cooling generally.
The original Switch will never get 4k docking, the processor is just not powerful enough. Maybe you could get 4k at 5fps.
What switch has over phones, is actual buttons, so Nintendo needs to sort out a joycon with a D-Pad and fix joycon drift, because this is their only edge over smartphones and they are messing it up.
Lol. The last comparison video in the other article showed the OLED showing individual pixels. No thx. The Lite imo has the superior screen based on that article. If they were gonna increase the size along with making it oled, should come as no surprise the resolution should've changed as well. Shame they missed that detail.
I watched the first 15 minutes and that was enough, unlike a fine wine Gamesmaster has not improved with time. Not that it ever could. And I'm not sure if giving the Oled the Gamesmaster's approval is a blessing or a curse.
Oh, and Trevor can't be that desperate for work surely.🙃
@Debo626 Tish...... England is in Britain, and we invented the real English language - The Queen's English. You lot just chew it up and spit it out 🧐
I'm joking, of course.
@Iggy-Koopa 😂 But seriously... People here, my countryfolk, do chew the poor English language up and spit it out. "British" English is proper English. There's nothing quite so grating as some of the accents here in the States. It's hard going from the proper diction one would hear in Downton Abbey, Doctor Who, or even Red Dwarf to "ya'll;" it's a very jarring transition lol. Anyway have a nice day! 😁
