Eric "ConceredApe" Barone - the creator for the insanely popular farming and lifestyle sim, Stardew Valley - has just lifted the lid on his brand new game, Haunted Chocolatier. It's more formally known as 'ConcernedApe’s Haunted Chocolatier'.
After dedicating 10 years of his life "and counting" to Stardew Valley, Barone has decided it's time to reveal his new game to the world. So, what's with the chocolate theme? It's just an idea that he had, and well - a lot of people like chocolate.
This game will go "beyond the ordinary" with the assistance of magical ghost chocolate:
"In Stardew Valley, the focus was more humble: living off the land, growing food, and connecting to the people and nature around you. However, with my next game, I wanted to explore more fantastical possibilities… experiences that take you beyond the ordinary. That’s where magical haunted ghost chocolate comes in.
"Chocolate represents that which is delightful. The haunted castle represents the allure of the unknown. The ghosts represent the imprint of the past. All of these things are important. However, don’t think for a moment that, because this game features ghosts in a haunted castle, it is an evil or negative game. On the contrary, I intend for this game to be positive, uplifting and life-affirming. However, if Stardew Valley mostly channeled the energy of the sun, Haunted Chocolatier channels the energy of the moon. Both are vital."
Most of all, ConcernedApe just wants it to be a "fun" new game. As for what kind of game it is, here's Barone's best attempt at describing:
"It’s evolving organically as I develop it, so I’m not sure where it will go. But at its core, the gameplay loop involves gathering ingredients, making chocolate, and running a chocolate shop. Of course, there’s a lot more to the game than that, but I don’t want to get too deep into at this early stage, partly because I don’t want to be tied down to any particular concept of what the game is."
It'll also allow Barone to unleash a part of himself that he wasn't able to within the constraints of Stardew Valley:
"I believe this will be a good opportunity, but I haven’t even gotten to the good stuff yet. I’ve been mostly working on the “meat and potatoes” of the game so far. But what really brings a game to life is the spice, the sauce. And I haven’t really gotten to the sauce yet. That’s coming."
And although the game is coming along nicely, there's still a lot of work to do:
"Anyway, this is all largely talk at this point. While the video I put together may look like the game is at an advanced stage of development, there is still a ton of stuff to do. And the way I work, things often don’t come together until the final moments. I tend to work with a “vertical slice” approach, and so it’s easy to put together some video that looks like a finished game. But there is a ton of content I still need to make. So, please understand that it will be a while before this game is done. I’m going to be working on it as much as I can, though."
Right now, the only system release Barone is 100% certain about is PC. However, he still has "every intention" of bringing it to other major platforms as well.
In an FAQ over on the official game website, the creator also addressed a few other questions - the game is currently single-player only and has been in development for just over a year now.
And while it might look and play similar to Stardew, it's actually running on a new engine - Barone is still able to reuse some code from Stardew Valley, though. If we hear any other updates about this upcoming title or a Switch announcement, we'll be sure to let you know.

desperately looks for pre-order button
The Stardew Valley X Willy Wonka crossover that nobody asked for and everyone wants.
I'm not the biggest fan of Stardew Valley, but THIS looks cool
I love Stardew Valley so I will give this a try at least.
As much as everyone sings praises about Stardew Valley, for various reasons I'm just not into farming sims. This, however, has my attention. It exudes charm, and I'm admittedly very biased towards chocolate.
Even haunted chocolate is hard to resist

It sounds interesting. I really liked Stardew Valley so I will definitely keep an eye on this.
Looking forward to spending hundreds of hours on this.
Dang it, ConcernedApe. I've already spent dozens of hours on Stardew Valley, and now you're releasing another game for me to get hopelessly addicted to?
Do the ghosts sing catchy tunes whenever a child gets lost in your factory? If so - Day 1 purchase.
Very cool indeed. Eric is an absolute beast for taking this on.
Not a Stardew Valley fan, I guess part of it is the art style, but...even though this game's art style is similar...it...involves...chocolate. lol
So yeah, I'll keep an eye on this one.
This looks so good.
Good for him doing something he enjoys. Makes sense that he use the same engine and assets as Stardew. He’s a team of 1 still right?
So Stardew Valley and Moonlighter cross-over then?
If people are interested in this game, I would recommend them to check out Moonlighter too. I really liked that game 😊
100% day one purchase for me.
Looks like themed DLC tbh.
@LUIGITORNADO It isn’t the same game engine. It says so in the article (and the FAQ).
It does look a lot like SV right now. I wonder if it could end up changing later on. SV itself went through many different pixel art styles before it was released.
Oh...boy. Didn't the Harvest Moon creator make a "shop" game too?
Great concept.
Hoping it comes together well. :v
I cannot wait to lose a ton of hours to this game
Basically Stardew 2.... that's not a bad thing. Definitely purchasing when available on Switch. Hopefully by kate 2022
Excited for this. Looks like it has all the charm of Stardew Valley but with a bit more focus in the core gameplay loop.
Star is so damn cheap, yet I haven't gotten it. why?
I love this art style. I bought Stardew Valley but I really struggled to get into it. I need someone to hold my hands in the opening of this game. I just get so lost and it feels aimless, like, it's literally 'do what you want, I don't care' but even just a subtle push into a basic direction would help. This looks just as good and I love the combat and shop building.
This guy is seriously brilliant. I love how weird this is.
Meh, it doesn't grab my attention. It just looks like SV in a different setting and I've already played that game to death.
I'm happily anticipating this! Also, mmmmmm chocolate!!!!!
Tagline should be ‘Sì Barone!’
@ROBLOGNICK plant stuff and clean your farm on beginning, events will reach you soon enough
Looks like a clone of "Recettear" with a little bit more of the personal interactions and crafting we get in Stardew.
That's not a bad thing ... nothing is original and Racettear needed a sequel 8 years ago. So if ape is going to do it instead, power to him. He'll get my money for sure.
PS: I wonder if the name is an homage? I guess we'll wait and see if there is an helpful guide / spirt named choco.
I'm not into chocolate.
Jawbreakers or GTFO.
@LUIGITORNADO
Not in any way to take away from his incredible work, but he's never been a one man show. Even before the 1.0 release he had most of the art assists donated or updated by the community and the game itself is built on decompiled "harvest moon" code. This isn't to say he COULDN'T do it himself, he's just smart enough to know when other people can realize his vision better then he could himself.
The ports and localization are also done by other studios.
But the core idea that this is one guy in a basement making a game "alone" is still more or less accurate. A lot of assist design, for example, is just busywork. If I outsource a texture or use one from a library instead of spending hours I could be working on logic or dialog on it, have I compromised the creative vision?
And I think we'll see that here; everything that makes up the core game will by his own work, the stuff that just needs to be there he'll outsource.
I thought he was making a game about a magic school after Stardew?
@LXP8
He started that game and then ... well, you should search for his posts really because it's pretty heartfelt, but basically he said he was moving on to a new game just because that's what you're "supposed" to do but quickly realized he not only had more then enough money but also still wanted to do a lot with Stardew.
He sold what he had done already to his publisher, Chucklefish, who will be publishing it under the name "WITCHBROOK"
@HeadPirate @HeadPirate What? That's not true at all. He literally made all the art himself, and the game is written from scratch not from decompiled code. He also was never ever involved with Witchbrook.
Oh hello there insta-buy.
@Pigeon After all that success, still making these ugly windows paint games?
Why spend the money to pay a competent development team when people are begging to pre-order/day one purchase it anyway.
That's an amazing idea
The way he talks about the game makes mw want to buy it tbh. I am looking forward to seeing footage and reading reviews on this one.
Looks like Monster Sanctuary characters mixed in. Like that it's not just growing stuff but monster adventure.
@HeadPirate Liar.
"Thanks, but I'm not actually involved w/ that game... It's a common misconception. I have my own, unannounced secret project! Maybe I will reveal it in 2021" - Eric Barone
After how much everyone I saw online was hyped about this game, I went ahead and purchased Stardew Valley for the very first time and I gotta say, it's everything I wish ACNH was and more. Mad props to ConcernedApe and I'll be joining this hype train as well.
