Hamster – the Japanese company behind the excellent Arcade Archives series – has announced at the Tokyo Game Show that it is bringing four classic shmups to Switch, including Konami's Xexex.
Released in 1991, Xexex is held in very high regard by fans of the genre, and sadly never got a domestic port at the time of release (it would eventually resurface on the Japan-only Salamander Portable for PSP in 2007). It borrows elements of Konami's own Gradius series, as well as Irem's R-Type.
The other confirmed titles are GunNail (1992), Thunder Dragon 2 (1993) and Black Heart (1991). You can view footage of them all below.

H... How do you say that?
Xexex looks good and interesting. Sadly, I'm not an Shmup player nor fan. But, I like RayForce and Blazing Star.
, just rolls off the tongue "xexex" zexex
@Jackpaza0508 Zex-ex, I believe.
As the owner of a FlipGrip, an arcade stick and a TV that can be rotated to portrait on its bracket.... I'm in shmup heaven with the Switch!
Now if someone could make a left JoyCon with a little digital stick like the NGPC and wireless connectivity...
I wonder which version of Xexex will it be.
I was just looking at Xexex the other day. Looking forward to finally playing it!
I could see that if you’re not into shoot em ups that you’d think the Switch is absolutely saturated with them. But the more the merrier for me, only problem is remembering which ones I have..
@PessitheMystic One of the main reasons I'd love folders on Switch is so I could put all of the shmups I have together in one place!
Hamster and Switch, perfect match.
YOOOOOOOOOO XEXEX
This is the game you brag about to your friends that you're really good at.
Oh, hey man, I'm a master at xexex. Want to go for a few rounds?
Someone, please put Einhander on this machine. Of all the shooters to be revisited, this one is quite deserving
Xexex and Black Heart look really good. The other look all right, but a bit generic to me.
This is some good news, can’t ever have enough quality shmup releases...
PSA apparently the Cotton Saturn collection is crap (lag), but Cotton Reboot is great if you want some Cotton in your life.
For a split second, I thought this was about the NES game Xexyz. Bummer.
I've not heard of these before, but Konami made some great shmups back then, and Hamster always handles these ports with great care ❤️
Thunder Dragon 2!!!!!!!
@BionicDodo oh for sure. There’s about 46,000 Hamster titles out there now! My Switch could do with some housekeeping.
@PessitheMystic Even just three folders would be good: one for Shmups, one for Arcade Archives/ACA NEOGEO and one for everything else!
Nice, now if only Hamster provided a release schedule. At best, you may find out a day or two in advance what will come out that week, but keeps every week interesting I guess.
@BlubberWhale I have the 3 Saturn conversions and can tell you that the lag is awful and absolutely renders them unplayable.
Here’s hoping for a fix.
I've heard Xexex is a surprisingly popular game. Supposedly that game is part of the reason the PSP Salamander collection is so valuable (though Salamander 2 itself is supposedly a good game on its own, don't have much experience with it).
@Jackpaza0508
When it's at the very start of a word, the letter X is pronounced like a Z. Otherwise it's pronounced as X. So Xexex is pronounced "Zekseks".
@Desrever I had first seen that game through the Japanese version. Didn't know it had a localization until someone on a forum told me.
It seems it was censored/altered in quite a ways from the JP version. Tried to fan-translate it but it a difficult game to mod.
Speaking of shoots ‘em ups: anyone who still occasionally plays 3DS in the EU, pick up Chain Blaster on the EShop. It is on sale for super cheap and is a solid shootemup for any collection.
Hey, anyone know if the Flip Grip will be compatible with the OLED model??
And I guess they'll all be released before the pending Arcade Archives.
Keep em coming Hamster and what’s next from the Namco lineup?? 😁
@Realy_Till Likely both if you're talking about regional versions.
@joey302 The Genji and the Heike Clans
I definitely got Gradius x R-Type vibes from Xexex, which is awesome to me. I'll have to look into this game that I've heard countless times spoken through the ages.
@TheWingedAvenger Isn't it pronounced ''zek-zees"?
I’m excited about Gunnail and thunder dragon 2.
Remember when Hamster announced Raiden and we waited….and waited…and waited….and waited….and waited….and waited…and
I love that you guys report on shmups so regularly. They get ignored by most media outlets.
@CrazyOtto oh is that a Namco game? Not familiar with that one I don’t think
Loving that music and fully voiced attract mode for Xexex. And is that a tentacle cannon??
That is one xexxy looking shoot’em up 😁
@Pointy59
I was wondering the same thing about the Satisfye grip - will the OLED switch still fit things like that and the Flip Grip??
thunder dragon 2 is amazing.
we had it in our local arcade back in the days and it absolutely kicked my ass.
and i am pretty darn good at shmups
Thunder Dragon 2! Yes please. Xexex I have heard of but that is it.
Switch is becoming Schmup central, which is good.
@robr Raiden came out eventually though. This year's TGS list still has 4 games from last year's list. Trio de Punch, Rabio Lepus, Liquid Kids, and Tokidensho Angel Eyes. Let's hope they don't suffer the same waiting game that Raiden did.
@SMH88
Xexex is pronounced "Zekseks" because the letter X is always pronounced "Ks" except when it's the first letter in the word, in which case it's pronounced "Z". See Xylophone, "exercise" and "Rex".
the NES game Xexyz is a different story, and may throw some people off the pronunciation of Xexex. Xexyz is pronounced "Zeksiz".
@BionicDodo I am with you. Once I saw the switch turning into a shmup machine I bought a new monitor. The biggest deal breaker was if the screen was not able to rotate. Now if only X-box had more Tate shmups.
@X68000 Thanks for confirming that, and yeah, I’ll check in on that game again someday... Hoping for the best. (But I’ve got Reboot, so I’m basically good for quite a while... may eventually get that sequel, even through I’m not loving the graphics...)
Then there’s Pocky and Rocky Reshrined. Amazing
