Bloomberg published a story earlier this week about Nintendo's plans to release a new Switch model that would come equipped with a Samsung OLED display which will consume less battery, and offer higher contrast and possibly even a faster response time. It's reportedly a 7-inch, 720p-resolution panel and will be able to support "4K ultra-high definition graphics" when paired with televisions.
ResetEra user and known industry insider NateDrake - who has been linked to various other Nintendo leaks in the past, has now expanded on this story, claiming the new Switch unit will host some "select exclusives", especially from third-party partners.
"There will be some select exclusives, especially from third-party partners. May not be a big number of them, but I know of at least one."
In a separate post, the same source said Nintendo's plan was to position the device as a revision.
"Nintendo's plans are to position it as a revision. A premium model, if you will."
If this rumoured system does come with a bit of extra grunt, it would be no surprise to see third-party companies, in particular, wanting to port across more technically demanding titles that the current Switch would likely struggle with. In fact, there are even some games on the current models that could use with a much-needed performance boost.
As for Nintendo, if you reflect on the 3DS era, you'll know it made a handful of titles exclusive to the New Nintendo 3DS. One of the first ones was Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, which no doubt provided some extra sales for the company. So it wouldn't be a surprise if a Switch revision followed a similar pattern.
At the moment, Nintendo and Samsung representatives have declined to comment on these latest rumours, and Nintendo's president last month went as far as saying the Japanese company had no plans to announce a new version of the Switch any time soon.
How would you feel about certain games being exclusive to the rumoured Switch Pro model? Share your thoughts down below.

Well I don’t care but there’s plenty of people here who keep saying a switch pro would never happen because switch is selling so well and they don’t want to split their user base. I’m too lazy to keep track of people who wrote this will never ever ever happen. But there’s going to be a lot of revisionist history in a few months.
I know they’ve done this before & it depends on how big the titles are, but there is a risk that Nintendo could piss off a lot of people with this if it turns out to be true.
“You’re one of the 80M who bought a Switch or Switch Lite? Then tough, you can’t play these new titles on your Console.”
Imagine if Microsoft had said “You can only play Gears 5 on Xbox One X” or Sony said “You can only play The Last of Us Part II on PS4 Pro”. There would have been hell to pay.
once again just gonna wait for official info at this point, we hear a new "switch pro" rumour every year
Well, by the time i have enough budget in the future, i will pick the Pro version to play ACNH for 2nd island. Don't even care with AAA, don't even care with BOTW2.
Oh good, the daily Switch Pro rumour right on cue.
Nothing wrong with exclusives if they're mostly just third party games that wouldn't have run on the base model in the first place. Anyone who chooses not to upgrade won't be missing out on anything that they wouldn't be missing out on anyway if the 'Switch Pro' didn't exist so any complaints in that regard would just be irrational. Of course, there are plenty of irrational people who will complain no matter what but not much you can do about that.
@SonOfStayPuft Xbox has to do everything and everything to keep its limited fan base so they are super user friendly. The bigger Nintendo gets the more arrogant they get and the less they care about doing everything and everything to keep their users happy.
Please, just let me play botw 2 on my normal switch and i will be happy
@SonOfStayPuft They already did it with New 3ds.
The Switch Pro has become the worst kept secret in the gaming world. There are too many articles to dismiss that it’s coming this year. NL clearly know more than they’re letting on.
We're pretending nate is an insider again? Didn't we learn last week?
They should fix the drift first before they start talking about exclusive games.
With all the complaining about the lack of new AAA 1st party games on Switch it's not gonna go down well if they start making Switch Pro exclusive software. 😐
If this is true then this will be the most anti consumer move this gen, for most of us die hards its fine as we will get the new "pro" version but everyone else it will be a kick in the teeth.
Atleast with the xbox and playstation "pro" versions all the games played on the original systems aswell but if nintendo do this then they may aswell call it the switches successor
When Sony and MS released the Pro and One X they mandated they have zero exclusive games because they didn't want to split the userbase and screw over the people who already owned a PS4 and X1. The Switch has 80M users now right? This if true is Nintendo spitting in the faces of those people and then asking them to buy another console. I might as well wait until the half way mark for their next console because i'm only screwing myself by buying a "Switch 2" at launch.
Also they have done this before with the "new" 3ds versions which had 1 exclusive game (xenoblade chronicles), I honestly believe if this rumor is true then it will be mainly aimed at third party developers to get newer and more graphical games on the "pro" system whilst nintendos 1st party games will be available on both
I really hope not. I love Nintendo but man this'll be so anti-consumer if true.
Come on if u really want us to believe you tell us what games are exclusive xD
Nah, I don't have Nintendo doing that.
Also, I'm not taking any "Switch Pro" rumors seriously until the Big N says something themselves.
I hope you all realize that when the "Switch pro" finally releases, the Switch would have been out for almost 5 years.
Any extra power should go towards enhancing the performance of games that are struggling to run properly on the current Switch.
We can get new ports with a backwards compatible Switch 2.
This would just be a bad business move and undoes the whole idea of the Switch.. that being said.. it was a weird move making a handheld only console that can’t ‘Switch’
@UltimateOtaku91 You overestimate, drastically, how representative of the average consumer people who populate fan sites are. For most people, they'll see two models, ask which one they need to play Animal Crossing, ask which one is cheaper, buy it, and be on their way, never considering the question again. The only people who will worry about the difference are the very ones who will upgrade merely because they can. Very few people will truly be upset about it. Now, hardcore gamers getting themselves riled up on general principle...
@BenAV can’t wait to have a day where there’s no mention of a Switxh Pro
This would not be "anti consumer", and "there would be hell to pay" predictions are wildly off point.
Any such exclusive would self limit their install base, especially if the rumors of the Super Switch being very limited supply at launch are true.
I'm sure Nintendo would like having at least one title, be it first or third party that shows how much faster the device is, a game that can only run on the new hardware, but also doubt they would do that with a big game like BOTW2 or Pokemon Legends.
Not trying to be that guy.... but Nintendo isn’t dumb. They make a newer model aka switch pro. There’s not dropping exclusive games unless it’s a 3rd party game like it said.
Relax.
Nintendo is kinda in a no-win situation here.
There is a portion of Switch users that want a more powerful Switch that can then allow more games to be ported over. And there is a bunch of Switch users that don't want a variation that can then mean their Switch can't play all the games.
No matter what Nintendo does, there is going to be happy Switch users and unhappy Switch users. A no-win situation.
Also . . . two ways to look at a more powerful Switch.
Either . . . .
1. It is a more powerful variation that means our current Switch can't play all the games. (Like our 2DS can't play all the exclusive New 3DS titles.)
or
2. The new Switch is a new system that happens to be able to play all the old games from the original Switch. Sorta like how our Wii can play Gamecube games.
IMHO It really is (potentially) a glass half-filled or a grass-is-always-greener sorta situation here. LOL.
If this happens to be the case . . . I don't have the cash to run out and grab a new console. But it would be my next logical step as then maybe I'd get access to our current Switch, which my daughter grabs most days after school. LOL.
It can also bring in more users (that have been holding off for a more powerful console), which then means a bigger user base and more potential for Software Developers to want to port more games to the Switch.
@Tharsman Spot on. I'd imagine almost every game would run on both systems, the Pro being the showcase example to tempt people to upgrade, the regular Switch just running it at a lower resolution or reduced framerate.
@NintendoDad Option 1 should be fine I would think. Make the people who want to spend money happy rather than the people who don't want to spend money.
A revised model with an improved screen and better battery consumption I can get on board with. All this nonsense of more power that could split the userbase and 4K output is a load of old trollop.
Awesome no matter what hardware appears I just hope that maybe they can port all the old games yet again! "Captain Toad: Triple Dip Tracker", "Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze 4k Pro" "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Redux Saga Enhanced" "Pokken Tournament Third Unaltered Release Edition" "Super Mario 3D 8 year old game Re-release Twice in one year Edition" "Hyrule Warriors: Rise of the eShop Transactions" and so on. And please keep the broken drifting joysticks for nostalgic appeal.
I predict it will be like the Memory Pak expansion on the N64: mandatory for some games and an optional boost for others. They can’t alienate so many of their existing fan base. I’ll probably stick to my current model until an actual successor comes with backwards compatibility, or unless it becomes like New 3DS as opposed to original 3DS.
@sixrings Nintendo sabotaged 3DS sales by launching New 3DS which got a few exclusives.
It's a rumour, it's a third party game, it's Cyberpunk.
This is very good and all but the most important thing this article failed to mention was when is Littlewood coming to uk eshop? We need to know! Xxxx
Unless the process for the consumer to upgrade was cheap and not very tedious (ie: doesn't cost much at stores if you trade in the current Switch for the new one and they allowed you to transfer your save data), this would not look good at all.
Still, Nintendo seems to have no realistic reason of releasing an improved Switch. It has become pretty clear to me that most of the complaints about the 1st-party games are from issues that stem from the developers themselves, not the actual hardware.
They could've easily made Bowser's Fury run at 60fps with less development constraints from COVID, or make Age of Calamity run on-par with Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition with more development time, also blaming COVID. Make both Xenoblade games run on the Switch had they not had development restraints with Breath of the Wild and its sequel.
Pokémon Legends is still in development so it's a bit early to judge, and I'm pretty sure it has been established that Game Freak doesn't care much about visuals as seen in SwSh, so it's not a hardware issue if they simply don't try with hardware.
There won't be many. Like with the New 3DS.
A small number of third party exclusives would be about right. Games that won’t run on the OG Switch. Be more of an issue if Nintendo start releasing them but I can’t see that happening
IF a Switch "Pro" even comes out AT ALL, I expect more stuff like "30fps on old model but 60fps on new one" and stuff like that, than a true split between consoles.
We had the exact same rumors for the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X back then, and in the end there was no "PS4 Pro and Xbox One X exclusives" but just better performance and eventually higher resolution on the new models.
Same is what I expect with a Switch "Pro", stuff where games like Doom Eternal could finally run at 1080p 60fps for example, instead of 30fps at 720p like now.
@electrolite77 I totally agree with you, hopefully they have learned from the New 3DS experience. I'm not bothered about third party stuff, I got a Switch for Zelda, Fire Emblem, Mario etc
Nothing wrong with having a couple exclusives that run on the better hardware. Nintendo kept the 3DS on life-support for a ridiculously long time, so no, the original Switch won't be going anywhere for a while.
Though if I were Nintendo, I'd do at least one non-Mario/Zelda exclusive to show off the hardware and boost sales. Something like Metroid 4.
And any 4K feature will just be clever upscaling from 1080p, unless it's a very basic game.
Exclusives on a PRO model would be idiotic but hey Nintendo did that once with the "New" 3DS.
Like many have said it would be odd to release a more powerful Switch with exclusive(s) when Nintendo pushed the Mario themed Switch recently. There's also the Monster Hunter Rise Switch very soon. Not sure they'd want to alienate those recent buyers.
However if they do release a slightly more powerful Switch with exclusives I can see them releasing a new dock for the old Switch to play those exclusives. That would make it TV mode only though and Switch Lite users would be SOL. I may be overthinking it like many of us are doing. Best wait till official announcements before we drive ourselves nuts, eh?
@matt1040 If any of this is true, they'll probably do exactly what they did with New 3DS: one or two exclusives from their IPs that won't anger too many, and the rest of the games will just benefit from better hardware.
I’ve seen a picture of the Switch Pro, it was kind of blurry, but I could just make out Bigfoot playing Metroid Prime 4 in 8k.
Jokes aside, I think Nintendo has positioned themselves for a 2022 Switch Pro release if we get one. Splatoon 3, new Pokémon game and probably BOTW 2. You never know with Nintendo though.
@BenAV now that is a smart educated answer.
I just recently Switch'd in... Though my 3ds still gets most of my gaming time. I am not upgrading and likely skipping the entire next generation to enjoy the multiple generations of games I already have!
This "pro" thing probably costs $400-$500... no way.
@WallyWest
That seems a bit of an overreaction over what will probably be a small number of third party ports which wouldn’t run on the current Switch
Nothing confirmed. Period. All speculation.
@jamesthemagi
It can be both.
@sixrings for the arrogance of Nintendo, see their NES/SNES era and their downfall with N64; for the arrogance of Sony see their PS2 era and downfall with the PS3 launch; for Microsoft’s arrogance, see generally Don Mattrick.
Ah, so not even first party this time (which, considering the low number of N3DS exclusives this article itself can't shun, isn't illogical). Basically, some third party publishers expecting to make money on something sold to the new niche of a premium-priced model adopters over the 80+ million flagship and Lite users. And this year to boot - like I pointed out previously, the same year when a lot of the new Switch-seeking public will have just invested a chunk of their hardware budget into the already announced Mario and Monster Hunter editions. Or will Switch Pro™ mean to sway the folks waiting for PS5 stock instead? Too bad, those will still wait for PS5 stock because Switch Pro™ will have neither anything close to PS5 performance nor Sony's exclusives on board.
Snark as @sixrings may about "revisionist history", there's none - once something actually happens, it happens, and truly feels like a curve ball then. But when "Nintendo works in mysterious ways" is abused as the sole argumentative basis for the attention-whoring buzz, deliberately ignoring dozens of questions this buzz evokes, it gets old fast even by the internet garbage standards. Not a single "insider" to date has given us a reason to doubt that this whole Switch Pro™ is happening when sanely expected - 2023 onward, with blackjack and OLED, with "a few third-party exclusives" (aka launch titles) that the previous gen wouldn't play any more than NDS could play RE Revelations. But just imagine all the articles and clicks routinely generated all over WWW on a weekly basis before that!
In a sense, it might feel like the "rumour mill" is actually the least interested in the upgrade's actual advent anytime soon - that'll be one less "mystery" to bait the fandom with.
I just want 60 FPS. I don’t care how it happens, I just want BotW, Ave of Calamity, ACNH, et al in 60 FPS. I can’t do 30 anymore. It hurts my eyes.
Sponsored by Sony and Microsoft.
If I had a dollar for every rumor article I've seen about the Switch Pro, I'd have enough to afford one by when a new revision IS announced.
I never thought it would be possible to respect someone even less then a Qanon freak.
But whoever has been putting out a new "SWITH PRO SO SOON" article every 3 days for the last 2 years is more crazy, insane, stupid, and annoying then any Qanon follower could ever be.
It's honest to god shameful and insulting that you let this happen Nintendolife. Clicks are not worth giving up any and all credibility you will ever have. You are literally reprinting the same article over and over, expect your "source" keeps moving the bar back every time a prediction doesn't happen.
I temember being really angry with nintendo, when I found out I could not play.minecraft in ds 2d. My last game I bought for 2ds. I expect to update to pro, but this os very, but very frustanting if they back to the same strategy from 3ds
I'll actually believe this when it actually has a solid date attached to it, i want a Switch Pro but Nintendo's window of opportunity to release one is really thin.
At this rate they're leaving it so late that it'll be much like the "New 3DS" and it'll be pointless because most developers were already making games for the original 3DS.
There were a handful of games that benefited from the increased power under the hood in the 3DS because Nintendo were just so late in actually releasing it. Only 2 years later it was replaced by the Switch.
Nintendo Switch Pro Has Exclusives
They should call it the “P Switch”.
Capcom, Square Enix and Koei Tecmo are the only big 3rd parties that take Switch seriously so probably stuff like RE8 and FFVII Remake which wouldn't run natively on the base Switch.
Nintendo however at least for a few years will probably go the Hyrule Warriors Legends route where the game runs badly on the base Switch but you can still buy it for the base Switch.
@15roundTKO
Ahh, this is why backwards compatibility is so bad...
Truly, amazing titles! You have a gift, watch out or they might hire/c&d you. Imagine micro-transactions while waiting for the downloads! Where is my credit card?
I would only pick up a switch pro if it helps with past games to make them run at a solid frame rate then at a variable frame rate.
Now if the ProSwitch launches with Pikmin4 and WaveRace4 as exclusives I’m all over it!!!
@sixrings Are you kidding? You guys don't get to keep spreading the same rumor for years and then say 'gotcha' when it FINALLY happens.
@sixrings I don't know of anyone who said "never ever" but the current Switch is selling pretty well right now. Who in their right mind would say Nintendo isn't going to come out with new hardware "never ever?" I think that's revisionist quoting.
I think, if a Switch Pro happens, it shouldn't have the big first party games as exclusives, only games that need a more powerful console.
This is exactly why I don't want a switch pro.
We already had a Switch revision, and wasn't anything too drastic other than focusing on battery life. People need to get this "Pro" naming convention out of their heads and realize if there is a new Switch, it's going to be a minor revision that still plays all games. If there is any amount of power increase it won't be drastic. And why would 3rd parties focus on a new version only that's going to have a much smaller install base?
I'm tired of missing out on modern games because the Switch is underpowered. I'd rather buy a more powerful Nintendo console than have own two modern consoles, and shell out another $500 for Playstation or Xbox.
Having to buy two consoles so I can have Nintendo AAA games AND modern games is ridiculous.
You are not going to make me buy another same-generation Switch, Nintendo. Don't do this.
I'm all for a Pro version. I expect it will launch holiday session with Zelda (which is why they didn't show it last Direct) - Pro will get announced around virtual E3 time.
And to everyone complaining about Nintendo releasing a Pro version, guess what - don't buy it - no one is forcing you. You will still get 99.9% of non-Pro compatible games.
Assuming this new Switch model is real, it's going to be interesting to see how Nintendo handles it. Having a model with 4K output and all is fine, but honestly the vast majority of Switch titles wouldn't benefit from it all that much. The real question is whether certain future games (especially first-party) will only be playable on the new hardware; if that happens it will effectively split the market and make many existing Switch users mad. Enhancements like the ones PS4 Pro made for existing PS4 games (example: Horizon: Zero Dawn), while maintaining compatibility of all future games across all Switch models, would make far more sense.
At any rate, we'll find out one way or the other eventually.
The splatoon 3 trailer put me over the fence on a switch pro. Seems possible now
Guys.
I think we are going to be impressed with the new Switch model. If it's going to potentially offer a NES to SNES style jump, then this needs to come out this year. And I'll be there day one. Of course, I'm not expecting a hybrid XBoxX (or whatever it's called) but if they can get within distance for ports (and let's not forget many games are still cross releasing on PS4) then the sooner the better.
Any exclusives the new model get would mostly likely be games that couldn't come to the current Switch as is. So technically, no one is missing out. Folk just have incentive to 'upgrade'. The current Switch is still going to get a ton of games. The hook of playing a game anywhere isn't going to go away all of a sudden. And slowly, I dare say we will see a transition from developers and a migration from gamers. Pretty long term stuff! Maybe we'll see another Switch after this rumoured one.
I just hope it has analogue triggers. Then there will be no one louder than me wanting an F-Zero GX HD (heck, throw in the arcade tracks being a little easier to unlock as a bonus too!)
I think this new model is just going to replace the current one instead of keeping both skus in the market. They'll probably start making a bunch of special editions with the current model to get rid of stock during the year and push the new model during the holidays.
Hope it's not the case. And if there are exclusives, I just hope I'm not into them.
If he's talking about Resident Evil 7 and 8, I could definitely see that. They already tested 7 on the cloud in Japan.
Or something like Arkham Knight which was a little bit of a demanding game.
Some days on this site are like Groundhog Day.
If they were Switch exclusive titles that were excluaive to Pro I would be very annoyed. If their 3rd party titles I can buy on a Sony console, I can live.
If true, I probably won’t be upgrading as I got the Animal Crossing Switch last fall. I wanted a Pro before but at this point I’d rather just wait for the successor.
If we do see a Pro, I think it’ll have a nicer 720p display and target hitting that resolution at higher frame-rates. It’ll probably support 4K although I doubt any games will hit that, maybe upscaling or 1440p at best. Regardless, it’s inevitable at this point.
I would like to update my flimsy switch. The plastic is cracked and the joy-con flex and wobble in their rails. I would like a more premium model that can withstand light, gentle use. Current switch owners won't mind an updated model because, after a year, they will probably need to buy a new one anyway.
This is really obvious, exclusive titles. More so we the new console grows in number. BoTW 2 was built with a new more powerful console in mind. So there will have to be two versions of the game, unless both versions will fit on one card.
Absolutely logical, but a kick in the groin to early adopters anyway.
The Switch platform may have made it a lot easier for Nintendo to provide backward compatibility. Something that was lost between Wii U to Switch. (Potentially providing game developers with a longer run for their games?)
If so, IMHO that may be better than having to buy the same game again for the new console.
So . . . some games I don't bother buying again, and just use on the old console.
Of course . . . there are certain games I would buy new versions of. We have 3 versions of Super Smash Bros (GC, Wii, WiiU), a bunch of versions of Mario Party or Wii Party and 4 versions of Mario Kart (GC, Wii, WiiU and Switch).
If, down the road, they brought out a more powerful Switch console, and my kids are still playing it, and there was a new version of Mario Kart out for it, I'd be very tempted to get the new Mario Kart for Switch Pro.
if switch pro had wii-virtual-console and no subscription fee for online play, this would be a major upgrade. I suppose they could put this on the standard switch if they wanted to.
Nintendo's tried this already with the New 3DS, but no one seems to remember how limited their attempt was. Off of the top of my head, I remember two exclusive titles of note: Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and The Binding of Isaac +. What people don't recall was Nintendo making SNES titles exclusive to the New 3DS. It felt silly, but in retrospect, I have to wonder if it might have been a cheap was of making the New 3DS more attractive. Whatever the case, Nintendo never committed to the exclusives part of the New 3DS. It seems more like the only notable exclusive feature was the control nub that started on the New 3DS, which gave extra camera control to games like Luigi's Mansion and Monster Hunter.
If I'm basing my expectations on that, I expect this "Switch Pro" to be a Switch with some QoL changes and SLIGHTLY improved performance for games. Sony was right to keep the upgrades to the PS4 Pro to just patches that improved performance for PS4 titles, and XBox's gaming 'ecosystem' keeps anyone from feeling left out. This is one time where Nintendo should stick to being boring and just keep differences between the Switch and the upgraded Switch minimal. As long as the standard version is sold with a clear price difference, that should avoid confusion. A cheaper version of something is more affordable, but comes with less features-easy!
People moan about this yet moan the switch isn't powerful enough. They probably upgrade their phones every year as well...
They won’t announce any games that REQUIRE the new hardware for a few years. They’ll just have it as a high end option for those who want 4K gaming and more high intensity games will just drop in resolution. Eventually once the Pro out numbers the normal Switch then they will start having games exclusive to it.
“... and Nintendo's president last month went as far as saying the Japanese company had no plans to announce a new version of the Switch any time soon.”
I find this funny cuz they claimed the same thing right before they released the Switch Lite 😂
ohboyherewego.jpg
Assuming that "Switch Pro" would be the name.
I am a little disappointed that practically every website or youtuber missed the two most important news from that thread that make it clear what kind of upgrade we are talking about.
One insider, and one developer confirmed in the thread:
1- that it will have a new type of chip ( no more tegra X family)
2- it will have DLSS
Having these two points confirmed, people in the thread with good compurer and tech knowledge, came to the fallowing to conslusions:
3--> from the second point to have DLSS enabled and running , the cpu of the new switch has to have a certain power( computational capacity) or it will not run at all, and this power is similar to Xbox One. The Power Profile of the new switch while docked, when it can access even more power profile, and with DLSS running will make the new switch a machine capable of running games with a power between a PS4 and the PS4 PRO.
How close is it going to be the PS4 Pro people there still do not know because they can only guess how much RAM, Bandwith etc...the new switch will have.
Disappointing reporting on this also becuse all the fact are very well summerized by the OP on that thread on resetera, you can all go and see it.
Maybe that’s why Breath of the Wild 2 was delayed? To make it a Switch Pro exclusive in 4K?
So happy this is finally out. Was tired of hearing people say the switch was fine and another model wasn’t needed until 2023. This is the right move. This is Nintendo being aggressive and proactive. This will rep rewards for them and their install base. Great times ahead.
Could care less about third party games. Those are usually better on other systems anyways. People mainly get the switch for Nintendo first party games. Now if Nintendo made some of their games exclusive to the rumored pro, then that’s a different story
Good. Bring on the Switch Pro. I’ve been waiting for it since the original Switch launched 4 years ago.
@foobarbaz
I agree. 5 years is a lot of time for a hardware. In order for Nintendo to stay relevant in the hardware space, they need to compete with Sony and Microsoft in terms of third party support. The next gen consoles play games in 60 FPS and even higher. It’s inexcusable that we still got games that barely hit 30 FPS on the Switch. I feel like hardcore Nintendo fans don’t want an upgrade.
@foobarbaz The Switch has been around for 4 years, not 5, they claimed that it would last longer than previous Nintendo consoles (last year they said it was about halfway through its life cycle), and it has the weakest first-party lineup of any Nintendo generation in recent history. Yes, they should make sure people who bought the console get their money’s worth by releasing more Switch games rather than a completely unnecessary upgrade (video game graphics are about as good as they’re ever going to be, with the improvement between generations getting smaller every time but with production budgets increasing exponentially). The phone analogy doesn’t work because not everyone does that, phones tend to be heavily subsidized by one’s provider (most aren’t paying $1000 out of pocket), and nobody is buying a new gaming PC every year (a more relevant analogy).
Now a little bit of my speculation of the new" Switch business model" :
It is becoming increasingly clear why nintendo was talking about a 9 to 10 year cycle for the switch, because it seems that nintendo will not follow the tradition console generations of the past and it´s cycle of seven years.
The ten year cycle of the switch will divided between the original switch and the switch 1.5.
The switch 1.5 will be completely backwards compatible with the original switch.
The original switch will be supported by nintendo first party developed games for circa seven years after that
new nintendo games will be developed only for the new switch.
@Euler
Sorry if i am jumping in this conversation.
I think nintendo will support the original switch for a seven to eight years with their games after that it could be that nintedo will develop their games only for the new switch( that is if the new switch is successful).
Since the new switch will be quite more powerfull then the original switch third party games could come only to the new switch( RE remake, NIer, madden etc..). It could be that these game will be available to the original switch through streaming.
@Baobab I think you may have made an assumption about a new type of chip meaning no more Tegra. Xavier is the latest Tegra SOC, and supports DLSS (which uses seperate Tensor cores to the main GPU and CPU). It's been out for a couple of years now, which could make it a good fit for Nintendo's withered technology philosophy
@Ventilator or how you needed a new 3ds to play SNES games. These are the type of absurd things Nintendo has done and will likely continue to do if history is any indicator.
@sixrings Yep. This will not change, because they know a lot existing users will buy a "Pro console" too.
@Ventilator a lot of people will complain about it but buy it. No different than their limited run Mario 3D collection.
@UltimateOtaku91 how many games were made for 3ds and how many were "exclusive" for new 3ds. Come back when you have those numbers.
@TSR3
Yes sorry i was actually meaning Tegra X family, i will edit that.
You are right xavier or orin are both possibilities.
@sixrings “Pro” rumors have been going around since year 1 of Switch, making people holdout for the upgrade. We were proved right already against countless rumors of an announcement around the corner.
Four years later, I don’t think anyone has to revise their position with any shame. A new iteration was inevitable, it was always about when, and how dramatic the player base fork would be.
@AZD1222 I think you need to read my comment properly......
I clearly stated the "new" 3ds had 1 exclusive!
@Spiders well my take is people wanted a pro model since day one. That is different then it being rumoured. The rumours or news started a couple years ago. But this is just my opinion or the way I look at it. Everyone looks at things differently.
I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo keep the handheld screen at 720p. The OLED is a nice interim upgrade. The USP of Switch Pro/1.5 has to be upscaling to 4K for people with new TVs. They have to have a foothold in this market, otherwise it'll be like the Wii not supporting HD in the early noughties all over again.
So, you don't need to worry about getting a new switch until you get a new TV (unless you already have one of course).
Maybe it’s not switch pro maybe it’s Switch U with backwards compatibility, but not forwards compatibility for its games.
You mean like literally every other BS leak thus far? Nintendo won't make the New 3DS mistake again. If it is not a next get system it makes no sense as they cannot compete with PS5 or Xbox Series going forward since games won't be able to be ported easily or at all.
@sixrings No, it makes more sense to jump to the next gen and all of the rumors were ***** and this one is too. They ate already working on their nextgen Switch that much I can assure everyone.
If they got exclusives, I hope it's something like Beat Saber, where I couldn't play it on a Switch before anyway.
More than ever I hope this is fake. We don’t need a split fanbase. Make games work on Switch, make games from the ground up for switch, but don’t gate the system. I love Nintendo but if they actually do this, I am out until the successor. Just like I did with sony and ms.
If I need a slightly updated Switch to play the latest Nintendo games, that would be awful. For that money I just want some serious extra graphical power (I still believe that will happen).
@Euler totally agree mate, comparing phones to consoles is ridiculous for starters. Personally console generations don't last long enough, but unfortunately you get usual crowd who keep wanting the next best thing.
I'm having so much fun with my Switch, that I will eventually get the Pro, if it ever comes out. The sheer variety of games on the Switch, from Nintendo exclusives to indie titles to third party games to retro titles, there is so much to play and my back log is so large. If and when a new Switch comes out, then maybe I'll buy a new one, but I'm having so much fun on the current one I'm ok to wait for now.
People will lap this up. I hope we can all appreciate that for this sort of thing, we are the vocal minority. If the rumor is true, Nintendo is just gonna churn it out, regardless of what the vocal fan base thinks and it will sell millions.
I have to say, I feel a little duped. Hopefully the upgrade is SIGNIFICANT. If they pull an apple and increase its GPU by 0.006% then I’m out.
I'm at a point if the "Switch Pro" actually runs better than the switch with some features to it then I will buy it however if everything is just superficial then it's a hard pass.
I call MLB THE SHOW
@sixrings Looking at the bright side, Switch is over 4 years old anyway.
This is a terrible business decision. You have a console with 85 mil units sold and will have games you can’t use on it. Gonna love it when I have to pay for a new console than 2 years later get a more expensive one. And no I don’t play Xbox and PlayStation so the last one I got was the switch
@sixrings
Than they have another Wii U because they are like were Nintendo they will buy anything we put out
I really want to see/ hear if the switch pro will make ark playable on switch, or if it will reduce the issues payday 2 had.
I hope it's at least a year away. I'm in no hurry to have my Nintendo Switch become obsolete. Even original-Switch-compatible games released after the pro unit comes out are likely to see suffer performance issues like input lag, slowdown, and choppy frame rate on the original.
@DrDaisy what if games continue to run on the original switch at 720p 30fps. Plenty of people here over the years said 720p was “good enough”. Is “good enough” now obsolete?
Fallout 4 with Microsofts blessing.
@Crono1973 first of all I haven’t been spreading rumours. I don’t have a website or YouTube channel. I simply believed credible news sources when they started reporting it.
@tseliot I’m not saying you aren’t an active user on here. Perhaps you’re more of a silent observer. That said even in the last week there have been people saying “never ever” on here.
The Switch has great momentum right now that shows no signs of slowing, but Nintendo could quickly put an end to that if they suddenly announced a new and improved model. A new Switch will happen eventually, but in my opinion, Nintendo would be smart to release it in a couple of years and not while the Switch is currently the hottest system on the market.
Ahh crap, they're gonna call this thing "New Nintendo Switch" aren't they?
@skullivan I’ll bet switch XL. Two years from its release will come the New Switch.
I just want a switch TV
It is not going to be anything major so no need to worry about botw2 (or something similar) not being on the current hardware. At best, it will get some of the less popular Nintendo games or some of the newer games with better framerate, as well as some 3rd party ports that wont be on the current switch because of hardware limitations.
@NoTimeForBS considering the original botw frame rate was all over the place I think this alone would be a big upgrade for botw2
I personally don't see a problem with third-party Switch Pro exclusives. If the only way a game like Final Fantasy VII Remastered or Kingdom Hearts 3 can possibly run on Switch is in an enhanced model, I would rather see a split in the user base than for EVERY Nintendo player to have to miss out on those games because they don't have a PlayStation or Xbox. I'm all for it, as long as this doesn't apply to any of Nintendo's first-party games--just the ports we otherwise wouldn't get.
@sixrings problem is nintendo stated themselves theres no pro version coming anytime soon and these rumors are just rumors should be taken as a grain of salt.
@Mountain_Man were only 2 to 3 years away from switch 2 so i think this pro nonsense should be just ignored.
@sixrings By major I meant they arent going to make any major game an exclusive not that the upgrade wouldnt be a major thing. I guess they could probably make botw run at 60fps on the new hardware, but I dont really care as long as I can play botw2 on my current switch. I have only ever felt the framedrops in Korok Forest and some other places. Nothing that would ruin my enjoyment, but then again, I am not sensitive about fps even though I own a PC. I dont think Nintendo would make major and popular games like Zelda/Mario exclusives unless they want major outcry over it. They would also be missing out on a lot of the market since the switch has already sold over 80 million units.
Okay we are still with these rumors I guess where there is smoke there is fire? 😒
@RiasGremory anytime soon. That’s subjective. To one person soon means next week. To another it’s a few months away. A follow up question asking Nintendo to define soon would have been helpful. Without that we are all guessing what they meant by that.
Plus Nintendo said once they were focused on the 3ds and then weeks later magically they released a new 3ds.
@sixrings this is way different then the 3ds situation switch continues to sell incredibly well reason why theres no point for a switch pro wen were only a few years away from switch 2.
@NoTimeForBS I agree. I think the people who think the switch as is should be content with what they currently describe as good enough. But people are funny. If others have better things then they all of a sudden are no longer content.
Don't assume that this supposed Switch Pro exclusive is an AAA game.
@RiasGremory unless you’re suggesting botw 2 and Metroid end up as switch 2 exclusive I believe Nintendo thinks a switch xl is necessary. Plus who doesn’t like more monies.
Ps I don’t remember 3ds ever not selling well. It maintained momentum by a 3ds xl and then a new 3ds.
@sixrings first of all I haven’t been spreading rumours. I don’t have a website or YouTube channel. I simply believed credible news sources when they started reporting it.
You don't need a website or a YouTube channel to spread rumors, you can do it right here and on any other forum. Have you been believing these sources for years?
@sixrings Yes, exactly. I am very content with what I currently own and even If I never buy another console, I have enough in my backlog to last me a lifetime. It is not that I cant afford stuff, there just isnt any need to buy anything new. I still have PS2 era games that I need to experience and I dont mind in the slightest that someone may have or want 4K 60 fps. If thats what they like, more power to them, but it doesnt affect me negatively in any way. I just like good games. We all enjoy different things at the end of the day.
@sixrings
You should rather keep track of people who have been saying the Switch Pro is confirmed and coming right around corner because it goes back to 2018 and most recently was guaranteed to be coming with Monster Hunter Rise and/or was related to the March 31 mass executions.
@Crono1973 according to Wikipedia “ In early 2019, in addition to reports of a light-weight revision of the Switch hardware, The Wall Street Journal and Nikkei reported on a rumored more powerful unit that they said was set to arrive in 2020.“. Sure 2019 was years ago. But 2020 with a pandemic was a bit of a right off. I have not been saying a pro model was coming since 2017.
I tend to put some weight into Bloomberg and the Wall Street journal. I assume they have some sort of standards of when they print their news. Everything isn’t fake news.
@sixrings Two years further out (which will be nearly 7 years since launch) it'll be the actual Switch 2. I could definitely see a TV only Switch coming before then though.
I said this on another post.... Even if they release it tomorrow, they will be so hard to get, like video cards. Nobody will have one for six months to a year anyway between the scalpers and the silicon chip shortage.
I'm sure Nate is absolutely thrilled that someone is using his posts on an internet forum to make reports again.
@Gino989 by that logic we should never release anything. Scalpers aren’t magically going to disappear in 2022 or whenever switch 2 gets announced.
@skullivan I might hold out and wait for a switch tv or just a switch two. I have very little interest in paying for better portable play if I barely ever play portable.
@SalvorHardin I did hear people say a monster Hunter switch pro would make sense. But they weren’t news outlets.
I think the Pro will launch the same day as botw 2 just like the first Switch. The game will play on both consoles like the original, but will obviously be souped up for the Pro.
@sixrings switch pro is not happening man and im pretty sure botw 2 will be on the current switch along with prime 4 as well.
My dad's mother works at nintendo and says the "switch pro" will also be able to cross-play steam games. Can she have her own article too?
@weisske lol
@RiasGremory is switch xl happening. Is a New switch happening. I just want to be sure I have all the basis covers in case the news drops. Is it never ever happening?
@sixrings dont get your hopes up man news outlets should not be trusted either especially since none of these rumors are not confirm by nintendo.
@sixrings Oh right, so you have been spreading rumors for 2 years and IF it finally happens, you still can't blame people for not believing it 2 years ago. Interestingly your credible sources do not include NINTENDO who has denied the rumors.
Why do we still take these rumors seriously? There's been one after another pretty much since 2017. People keep spouting nonsense from so-called insiders. Eventually one is going to GUESS right. Yes, GUESS. But then all the sites like NintendoLife are going to act like they had some inside knowledge and blah blah blah.
New 3DS did this doesn’t surprise me
@RiasGremory what is Nintendo supposed to say. Oh man you caught us you’re right a new switch is around the corner.
@Crono1973 again Nintendo denied a new 3ds and then what happened.
Again I don’t have a website or a YouTube channel so I’m not spreading anything. Believing something maybe true isn’t spreading rumours. I have zero inside sources.
It has been two years but I’m giving last year a pass because clearly things didn’t work out for a lot of companies plans.
I guess you can see these as excuses so we agree to disagree.
As always, let's all take a deep breath before we start internalizing these rumors as facts.
@YoungLink64 I have nothing to base this on but I just can't feel that Nintendo would make games 'exclusive' the the rumored Switch Pro. I just don't think Big N would do that to us.
They did it with the New 3DS.
I think if Nintendo are smart, they will essentially make the Switch pro seem optional, then have it slowly transform into their own "Switch 2" next generation, as Microsoft is doing with their One and X|S generations.
@sixrings My point was, Everyone is working themselves into a frenzy about if they should buy a switch pro or not, when they probably won't be able to for a while, that's all I meant.
@sixrings lol the bigger they get? This is a hilarious comment.
@Gino989 ok. That’s fair.
@BAN rofl. Hilarious.
@BenAV New 3DS with Xenoblade. Super Smash Bros.. optimized Pokemon SM/USUM..
god rehash of the same story how many times now. the enhanced 3ds had how many exclusives and how succesfull were they.
@SonOfStayPuft I don't think we have to worry to much. I think it will be like PS4 / Pro. Maybe a few exclusives, but I am ready for an upgrade as my switch is ready to be replaced soon.
Probably already been said, but, Just because they have no plans to announce one, doesn't mean they don't have any plans to build one.
That's the worst thing you can do with a hardware "revision" - forcing people to buy it because of 1-2 games. New 3DS was a middle finger in that regard.
Zelda BOTW 2 will be much better on switch Pro.
I haven't played much with the original Switch yet, so I doubt I'll be buying the revision any time soon.
Hope this isnt true. A revision like the revision I jumped in on is one thing but a mid console pro update with exclusives just sounds like they throwing away the loyalty and appeal that help made switch the must have device globally.
I want Nintendo to skip two rocks with one stone by first making a $100 tv only switch that is actually a dock with a replacable outside fan (plus inside fans) that perhaps it doesn't need due to low energy consumption but has anyway so that when some one docks or fuzes their switch or switch lite it can benefit from the extra ventilation.
And two by utilizing a dock that can process they can optionally keyword optionally make more demanding games already ported and optimized to play well on any switch epecially the original run better. If they can't port a game to the original switch then the switch either doesn't need it or would benefit from a different game. Quality over quanity should be the name of the game. Switch should get games only from producers ready to take the time to optimize their games for switch or build them switch up from the start.
Sure the switch will always take what it can get port wise, but what it really needs and benefits from is switch built games not broken 50 gig+ must update day 1 games. Once Nintendo start chasing after rivals in power it will result in us all, including Nintendo, having rival problems like overmaking consoles for overmade games that are full of undermade issues. With extra issues Nintendo will never bother to fix or solve joycon issues.
Call me old fashioned but I'd rather get a back up budget switch which optionally can make already good running games run better when docked or fused or if you are a really wierd like me add co-op optionally of course to non co-op games.
What if oddessey, skyrim, Hades, and breath of the wild could be played in local wireless co-op since technically a new processing dock is just another switch. I know power would makes things easier for devs but with a little sacrafice, patience, and innovation we could fully explore the outer limits of what the switch and games its supports already are capable of.
Again Nintendo would and should push games running well on all switches always, and a cheap dock with a set of cool features that are only optional could keep in line with that.
It's inevitable in the case of a stronger hardware revision. There will be some Pro exclusives, while most games that run well on the Pro will be available for the old Switch but will run relatively poorly. Some games that run well on the old Switch will have some enhancements on the Pro, but most games will probably run identically on both platforms, but Pro will have more stable framerates in games that have variable framerates.
@Moistnado Bingo! Same here. My two year old switch needs replacing. I also hope they update the joy-con with back / forward compatibility.
Figure if anything it'll be akin to how 3DS ended up being with the division. Games will have "additional" features accessible only to those on the Super Switch. Straight up "only playable on" is a step backwards and I feel like they know that from the 3DS period.
i wouldn't worry too much. Maybe 1-2 selected games to show off new version. No need for FOMO (fear of missing out). Doubt it will be as strong as PS4 anyway. Would be fun to have RE7 or Monster Hunter World but i don't see it happening
PS: I have a version 1 3ds and the only exclusive i miss is Earthbound! (a SNES port)
I'll be seriously pissed if I bought a Switch and then, within ~1 year, find out I can't play Breath of the Wild 2 without purchasing ANOTHER Switch.
@Nookingtons Water is wet?! How could they do this? I’m gonna go yell at a cloud!
CLOUD NINJA APPROVED
@YoungLink64. Thanks.
Also what if you had all 3 and had the option to utilize them all for just one game or a new mode for one game?
The current models are still selling mega busters, they’d really ought to ride it out for at least another 2 to 3 years then come out with a Switch successor.
Unless they’ve got a guaranteed no manufacturing issues, a midlife Switch upgrade (as much as I’d love to have one) I don’t believe is a wise business move, specifically in COVID times and especially if there are going to be model exclusive games.
These rumours are getting out of control and contradicting each other. It ranges from only a screen upgrade to almost entirely new hardware. If they are working on a new iteration, it also stands to reason that they are also deep into working on the successor as well and I feel like any rumours that have weight to them may be getting the two mixed together.
@ARhollow Sales say otherwise. There's been quite a few 3rd party games that outsold their PS/Xbox counterparts.
@UltimateOtaku91 @AZD1222 How many exclusive to New 3DS? 4 retail packaged games (the one launch game, then three other games three years later). Probably a handful of eShop games (can't remember exact names, but I recall maybe a couple of them were significant games). And the SNES VC games (almost all of them I already own either an actual copy or on another console or both). I didn't want to believe until I heard homebrew authors say as well that the increased processing capability was needed to run SNES games at a presentable speed (didn't think Nintendo was that dumb to deliberately promote SNES games as a upgrade-seller for the N3DS, but some days we can't tell.)
@foobarbaz You know, phones are quite a different thing than consoles. Phone upgrades are service plan bait. I doubt THAT many people would upgrade if they ACTUALLY had to drop $1000 out of pocket every year.
And if they did, maybe the phone manufacturers wouldn't produce them like garbage that was meant to be thrown out every year. (not to mention people who let their babies handle them. Maybe I'm just old and crazy, but in my time, if you paid for a thousand dollar piece of brittle electronics, it seems like letting a baby play with it was about the last thing you'd want to do with it.)
But personally, no, as long as my phone can make phone calls is good enough. I do admit to getting quite a bit of use of the camera, but no, most of the stuff in it is non-essential.
First of all, I would like it to be called super or new Nintendo Switch, Pro is just "too Sony" for my taste... with that said, I don't mind about the exclusives, it's understandable and I intend to get it for the 4K TV output. I only play docked so that'll be a nice feature to have.
@westman98
You're spot on in a way not intended by your comnent. Nintendo apparently does not currently make AAA games anymore for the existing Switch or any future platform. They probably will cancel anything previously announced. Ports forever and only ports.
TKO APPROVED
@Shadowthrone
Depends what games. Indie games are usually better on the Switch due to portability. But big games like Doom and Skyrim are cheaper and better on other systems.
@Crono1973
yeah because the new 3ds exclusives were just the most succesful thing ever
@Severian
true but the n64 memory cost 19.99 at release when the pro will cost 350 at the minimum so not really the best comparision there. 20 bucks is a lot less than 350 buddy
I want at least Zelda botw 2 and Pokemon Arceus to be playable at the original Switch.....If not ill give something more to buy a PS5 and finally play some AC games and many more masterpieces .There is no way i m re-buying the console.
Waste of money has its limits.!
@GrailUK
the nes to snes were different consoles man. are you trying to say that it is a new console seperate from the switch if not then why did you even make that comparision
@DavidMac
after a few years the switch would be 7-10 years old depending on how long you are talking about. why not just release a new console at that point.
@KingMike other than xenoblade chronicles what other games were exclusive to the "new" 3ds? Unless they werent released outside of Japan I can't think of any other game other than xenoblade
@ARhollow
the ps4 and xbox one lifes were much more than five years long
@blindsquarel yeah because the new 3ds exclusives were just the most succesful thing ever
There's a word for attacking an argument that your opponent never made in the first place, strawman.
@UltimateOtaku91 other than xenoblade chronicles what other games were exclusive to the "new" 3ds? Unless they werent released outside of Japan I can't think of any other game other than xenoblade
Minecraft and the SNES VC games.
@blindsquarel well for Nintendo to stay relevant with the PS5 and the new Xbox they need to have hardware that can come close. 30 FPS and lower is inexcusable in this day and age. I don’t mean to sound like an elitist but Nintendo can do a better job in the hardware department
if we do get a Switch Pro, i just hope that the exclusives are not limited to older games ported over to the Nintendo Switch. although i Would like to Pikmin trilogy on the Nintendo Switch, as well as the Luigi's Mansion trilogy.
for all we know the different Banjo-Kazooie games will arrive on the Nintendo Switch (pro) as an exclusive. it would explain why the bear and bird duo are now playable fighters in super smash brothers. its either that or Microsoft and Nintendo are finally becoming friends...lol
as long as Splatoon 3 and Legend of Zelda breath of the Wild 2 are not exclusives to the Pro model; than we are all good.
@ARhollow well for Nintendo to stay relevant with the PS5 and the new Xbox they need to have hardware that can come close. 30 FPS and lower is inexcusable in this day and age. I don’t mean to sound like an elitist but Nintendo can do a better job in the hardware department
See now I said something similar to this before the new consoles launched and was told on this forum that the Switch would continue to do just fine.
In fact, the Switch is doing just fine but watch as the same people change their story at the hope of Switch Pro. All of a sudden those same people will tell us how Nintendo HAS TO DO THIS TO COMPETE.
@15roundTKO
Uhhhh what??
I think you completely misunderstood what I wrote.
I said that the Switch Pro-only game that NateDrake teased may not be some big AAA game that everyonce thinks it may be.
@ARhollow
Nintendo is doing fine not following in Sony/Microsoft's footsteps.
Even this rumored Switch Pro won't be anywhere near as powerful as the PS5/XBS, but Switch will continue to be wildly successful as the general market continues to purchase Switch hardware and software.
@Ryu_Niiyama Normally, I agree with you, but I don't think this splits the fanbase at all. Any exclusive Switch '2' game probably wouldn't work on Switch '1'. EA's Fifa game for example. If 2 gets a 'proper' Fifa and 1 still gets the legacy, then nothing has really been affected. For the next couple of years. The 'play on the go' proposition isn't going to die over night, and people will still want to put their games on a console with 80 million players. By which time, if more folk have upgraded, I dare say we see a shift in focus from everyone. But nothing is being split. There is just another incentive to upgrade outside of more powah! (I reckon)
@blindsquarel Not sure what you are saying, but what I meant was, Nintendo went on record saying 'with the Switch, they are starting from square one.' So, my referencing the NES was me equating to Nintendo going back to their roots. This tech is new for them. Much like the NES was. Their next console (the SNES) was my fave console ever. Their (rumoured) next console - the Switch '2' hopefully has as much promise as that leap.
Yes they were different consoles (sky is blue while we are stating the obvious) and backwards compatibility is much more common these days. And like all the arguments between folk over whether it's a handheld or a console (even though it's a bloomin' hybrid lol) I'm sure they will be arguing over if it's a revision or a successor (even though it's still a Switch and that's just going to be perception again)
@blindsquarel Becuase a new console generation is a huge risk. Why not just release a Switch Pro, let indie games come out that run on both, build up an install base of people who want to play the existing and new Switch games in 4K, and then eventually start producing exclusive games for the Switch Pro.
The Switch Pro would basically be like announcing and shipping the Switch's successor without immediately depressing interest in the Switch. Since the Switch Pro would be backward compatible with the Switch, they could leverage the huge install base of the existing Switch while continuing to build up an install base for the Switch 2. They could release games for the new console that would continue to run on the new one.
Basically this is what happens with PC gaming, iOS and Android gaming, and what Microsoft and Sony are doing with the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Since the new system is backward compatible you can continue to release games for both, and just have them look better on the new one. Eventually the new one drops in price so much that you phase out the original Switch, keep the Lite for people who want to game portably only, then eventually change the internals of the Lite so that it has the new more powerful chips so they can run the games and just be more power-efficient.
This would also allow their evergreen games to continue to be ever green.
@westman98 nothing wrong with an upgrade. Nintendo games should run 60 FPS in this day and age.
@NintendoDad I think it's win win. There will be the usual cross over of old Switch to new much like a new generation. If the rumours are true about what this new Switch can do, they would be crazy to sleep on it. Nothing is getting split. What made the Switch so successful isn't going to drop off over night. People will still put their games on it. But the newer AAA stuff probably will pass in favour of the new Switch. And the fan base isn't being split. It's just being gradually ushered into next system (much like Sony and Microsoft do) It just takes a bit to get your head around because it's more like a mobile phone business model (ish) than a home console one.
@YoungLink64. Dont overdose. Wouldn't want those switches to switch owners.
There will be failures or outright lies in among these rumours.
I know of at least one.
Unless its something from Square or Capcom, I couldn't care less. Maybe Tales of Arise would get to me, but that's about it outside of those two.
@GrailUK
sorry if you missunderstood.
what i meant was that the nes to snes was a whole new thing. it wasnt a optional upgrade. a switch pro would be like the xbox one x for example. in the fact that it wasnt neccesary but it would run games better. i would be fine with a switch pro if it was like for example botw 2 ran at 30fps on the og switch and 60 on the pro
Exclusives would be a beyond stupid move. It would fragment an install base of 80+ million users.
@DavidMac the ps5 and series x are clearly next gen a switch pro would be more cryptic
@blindsquarel Yeah I get you. Well, since it has exclusives, (if this is true that is lol) then it's going to be different things to different people. I'm sure some will see it as an optional upgrade. Some will see it as a new thing. Probably Nintendo would want folk to adopt the new hardware and discontinue the old Switch eventually. And the next Switch after that will do a similar thing. It's certainly different. Kinda of doing a NES -> SNES leap but doing away with the idea of generations. More just evolving the same thing. Hmm...
We shall see I'm always wrong on this sort of thing lol (And sorry for being slow!)
@Miu Xenoblade was a port that the base 3DS couldn't handle but we won't see the same thing happen with the 'Switch Pro' as the base Switch is already Nintendo's most powerful piece of hardware yet so there's nothing they could port that wouldn't run on it. We could definitely see some games that are better optimised on the 'Pro' but I'd be pretty surprised to see first party exclusives.
@GrailUK Generations work for Nintendo. They can make new (different) hardware and really innovate on controls (see Wii and Switch) to become big. Upgrades are just that, improvements on older hardware. Like the new 3DS, DSi. Both of them had a handful exclusive games, and those games really used the improved or additional hardware.
I see a Switch Pro happening, but not with exclusive games. Well, at least not from Nintendo. I don't see a Switch 2 happening though. The next generation will have a different control scheme than the Switch has. Like every generation before it.
My ideas for the next generation would be a Switch like Nintendo DS, but then with a foldable OLED screen. It would perfectly mimic 2 screens in portrait mode with controllers on the side (similar to the Switch) or one big screen in landscape. (again with controllers on the side, so they'll be removable). With an wireless dock for TV.
Use all the power for anti-aliasing and load times
@GrailUK That’s my point. If a switch pro game doesn’t work on a switch/switch lite, it splits the consumer-base. Because, the original buyer can’t play that game even though Nintendo has been working towards one ecosystem. If there is enough of these exclusives(and they are good), then it becomes a forced upgrade.
For instance if every game that came out on new 3ds after launch had been exclusive or ran so poorly on the base systems to be unplayable then that would have severely fractured the consumer-base. Luckily the main offenders were xenoblade (exclusive) and Hyrule Warriors (runs poorly on older systems). And you could get both in some form on other systems.
Difference is the n3ds/n2ds line were extending skus/revisions; improvements to the system to bring in new users while retaining the majority of goodwill from old users because the improvements didn’t massively impact the library. Switch is selling high and in the middle of its life. Two different positions.
However if a revision, not a successor, is made to focus on exclusives, that has the opposite effect. It curbs existing sales (leaving stock on shelves unsold) and kills good will because you send the message that you are now gating games behind a higher price point. Nintendo has avoided this even with amiibo(as you can get amiibo unlocks in game...mostly). That’s also why switch lite works with joycons.
Sony and ms ended up having to do this with their revisions last gen to keep peace. There is a reason you can have a base ps4 and xbone and still play everything that came out for those lines. I still have base systems for that reason and I waited until the successors came out to buy ( or I will in a year or two).
Again, I have no issue with a successor (hopefully with BC but not required) I have an issue with a revision with exclusives. Imagine if BOTW2 was sPro exclusive (Nintendo isn’t crazy but it is a good example), it would cause a major backlash.
If that floats your boat, that is cool; I stand by what I said.
@sanderev A Switch DS! Yeah, that would be cool indeed!
I'm hoping that older Switch models will be usable (touchscreen and all) as second controllers to the Switch '2' exactly like the Wii U Game pads. Bring back the Wii U! Hee hee.
@Ryu_Niiyama I dunno. I think I get ya. But can we play Madden (if you would want to lol) now? No. So releasing it on a new Switch would be no harm no foul I reckon. I don't reckon anyone plans to develop for Switch are going to drastically alter for the next 2 years. All that is happening is third parties can bring more games to Nintendo. It's new hardware either way. Up to Nintendo to market it it as a successor or a revision. It sounds more like the former, but if they do something crazy like just outright replace the older model with it, then older Switch owners will want to upgrade eventually. Did the GBA and DS split the user base? Or did enough people buy into the DS so Nintendo were left wondering why they still made GBAs lol. I reckon a similar thing could happen here if its as meaningful upgrade as folk seem to think. (Crazy thing is we don't even know if it's real. I'm happy with my Switch lol. But I would upgrade in a heart beat lol.)
Ah and I totally agree. This needs to be more successor than revision for exclusives. (Knew I would agree with you in the end hahah)
@UltimateOtaku91 I know there were 3 physical games in 2017.
Maybe Minecraft was one of them, one of the Warriors games (either Hyrule or Fire Emblem, I remember whichever came first was cited for poor performance on non-New hardware) and was the one called Runbow. I think it was Run-something.
@GrailUK I feel you are conflating a lot of things here. Or we are talking at opposing angles here.
Not having a game currently is not the same situation as a game being offered exclusively to one sku of a product line. For instance I can’t play demon’s souls remastered on any ps4 as it isn’t gated it is merely on the successor/next line. That’s not a problem. But if it had been a ps4 pro exclusive that would have been. I’m talking consumer base of a product family not the company. Also the issues with frostbyte are a whole separate thing as well.
GBA is one line while DS is successor with BC. The GBA sales ran their course and tech advanced enough to release a successor. All of that is based upon production saturation and sales performance. That’s why the WiiU didn’t get 8 years. Sales tanked so they needed a successor ASAP. And even with that Nintendo has provided access to most of their first party exclusives on Switch for ROI and to take advantage of the larger consumer-base.
The terms successor or revision are not marketing terms in this instance; they are hardware descriptors/qualifiers. For instance, Nintendo couldn’t market the red wii mini as a successor (or any of their revisions really) to the wii. It’s a revision. The basic functionality is the same (basic...BC is added functionality). OTOH they couldn’t have said the DS was a revision of a GBA; the functionality gap is too wide. BC doesn’t change that.
Again if you want to buy a Switch Pro with exclusives, please do. While from market trends,I stand by my assessment, but if everyone else is like you and runs out to buy a switch pro and current switch systems keep flying off the shelf until product is reasonably depleted ...then as an investor, that works for me too. Perhaps in this “upgrade your phone every year climate” it is time for game consoles to match that. It’s worked well for micro transactions.
I just won’t be jumping back in until the switch 2/whatever they call the successor comes out. So I will have to agree to disagree.
Switch 2 confirmed! Spill the beans Ryu! You might get an article on Nlife!
Hehe. I remember the DS being sold as a seperate entity. A third pillar they called it. And it proved so wildly successful, it usurped the GBA. Swallowed it up. Maybe the next console will do the same. It's hard to talk about it not knowing what it is lol. If it is just a new screen and no bevel, then I wouldn't be interested in that at all. We'll just have to see.
@KingMike I suppose the one other advantage of the New 3DS was that it could run Miiverse (when it was active) with more demanding games.
I remember Pokemon Sun/Moon needing to reboot the console after quitting (and couldn't access Miiverse, thus couldn't share screenshots).
That sounds messy, and they have to be careful. Ideally they should just say no exclusive games, just exclusive features. But that also implies there's a lot more it can do.
I'm still looking forward to it. Not looking forward to preorders and scalpers in this climate though.
@blindsquarel As far as cryptic...I think you need a dictionary.
In terms of next-gen, that's purely semantics. Sony wants to push a new piece of hardware that has new exclusives because they're actually making a massive change to their hardware. They're including an SSD that will allow for games to be made fundamentally different than they were on the PS4. Microsoft is pushing the Series X because the Xbox One really didn't sell that well and they basically want a do over.
Nintendo already stored games either on an SSD or the internal flash memory. The successor to the Switch is not going to be massively different. They're not going to chase Sony and Microsoft. Both companies have more money and are selling their systems at a loss.
So the next console they make unless they've lost their mind is just going to be a version of the Switch that can push content to a 4K TV and have it look good. The Switch is already powerful enough to run the games that Nintendo is making, and most of their 3D parties are already porting their less insanely taxing games to the system.
Nintendo has just spent a ton of money releasing a bunch of new first-party games over the last 4 years, as well as porting the previous five years of Wii U exclusives. They've got a ton of first-party titles on a console that is still outselling Sony and Microsoft.
Their first-party games are generally stylized enough that features like ray tracing and what not really wouldn't see a benefit from the GPUs in the new Xbox and PS5. All that Nintendo has to do is make sure that there's a system on the market that gives them headroom to grow.
Given the fact that the world is in the middle of a chip shortage due to a number of factors, it probably isn't a great time for Nintendo to launch a new system. They're still selling a ton of Switches, and Nintendo has no problems making good games run like butter on the Switch.
When things are better though in terms of supply they have more than enough sales in the future to justify asking Nvidea to design a chip like the Tegra that they're using now. If they do a die shrink Nintendo can probably significantly increase the amount of processing the chip can do without actually negatively affecting battery life. Plus Nvidea has been showing off DLSS, and that's probably going to be the route that Nintendo chooses to go in terms of meeting the needs of 4K gamers. They'll design a bunch of games that are supposed to output at 1080 and then they'll let the machine learning chip upscale them to 4K and even 8K later, and you'll effectively get just as good of a picture as you'd expect from a PS5 with much better power efficiency.
Heck, they might even be able to release a Pro Dock that would let you connect your classic switch (or even the Lite?) and put a new chip in the dock that would actually run the game in docked mode at 4K but still let you access your save when you're using your Switch on the go.
Either way, Nintendo learned from the Wii. They're going to keep releasing games for the Switch for a long time and not just assume everyone would buy a totally different piece of hardware.
@GrailUK I think not. Not a fan of rumors/gossip.
I remember the 3rd pillar talk too. However that didn’t bother me because it was its own line. Technically, Nintendo told the truth. As there was still another gba revision (the micro) so if that had kept pace they could have kept both systems (since BC would have positioned the DS as a lateral successor -it would benefit from continuing GBA sales and still do its own thing) buuut the market said no.
That is not the same as a same family product with gated exclusives. Again, Nintendo has tried to avoid putting significant effort in gating within a sku family. Which has its own issues as that means exclusive games usually have to be middling. You are correct that the market will decide I just don’t want the market to be provoked the wrong way. Sega found that out the hard way. (While not a true analogy as Nintendo is better managed and funded they are just coming off a commercial failure and have only one product line that is not merch and branding). Ether way it is a rumor. I still hope it is false but I will wait and see.
I still say the way forward is making system (sku family) exclusives and optimized multiplats. More games for everyone, not less.
Edit: I read your edits. So if you are looking for a successor, I don’t understand your issue with me.
@DavidMac Well said.
I don't care about 4k, I just want a better build quality. The current switch feels so cheap. I would also like to play my switch a few gens later, like with my Gameboy Micro and New 3ds. That's never going to happen with joycon drift and cheap, thin flimsy plastic that cracks from being held.
Call it the "Switch Up" maybe lol
This would be terrible if true. Firstly, most people don't want to buy an interim "Pro" console just for a couple of exclusives, especially with the knowledge that an actual Switch 2 is about 2 years away.
And unless Nintendo is paying developers to port certain exclusives over, I don't see many developers taking the risk of porting their game to a much smaller userbase - especially when it's not a 100% guarantee that the userbase will even buy their game.
@UltimateOtaku91 Why wouldn’t this BE the successor though?
Everyone wants to move to the smartphone model and Nintendo is in the best position to do it.
It really comes down to forwards compatibility for original Switch, which can be phased out over a generation or two if need be.
@GrailUK
RE: "I think it's win win."
Yes. I agree.
I am just pointing out that no matter which way Nintendo takes . . . there is going to be part of the user base that says it was the wrong direction. So it is a no-win situation for Nintendo as far as keeping everyone happy. But it happens to be a win-win situation for users that want a more powerful system. And for anyone that gets the new system, they get to play the old games.
I was just pointing out that if Nintendo was bringing out an entirely new system everyone would be happy because Switch owners could be happy staying with their Switches. And the new system owners could be happy with their new system.
But if this rumour is right, then the new system just happens to be called the Switch Pro and . . . it happens to allow you to play the old Switch games on it.
@blindsquarel LOL Hey buddy, thanks for the reply, but you're talking about price point, and I'm talking about how the N64 worked perfectly fine without needing the memory pak, but in comparison, ultimately the upgrades for 3DS were necessary because of performance qualities and buying an amiibo reader for the 3DS instead of also getting better battery life and a bigger, brighter screen. I see this more as a "nice to have" like the memory pak for the Switch Pro rather than an "upgrade to New 3DS with more improvements for much cheaper than it was at launch instead of just getting an amiibo reader for your original 3DS".
If we're talking about price point however, justifying buying a new model for about $350 or so isn't the same as just getting an amiibo reader for the original 3DS or getting a much cheaper New 3DS which if I recall actually cheaper than the launch price of the original 3DS.
@Prizm
This is just pure speculation, but I think that if this new Switch exists, that the internals are the exact same, maybe something to better keep it from over hesting, but the dock is different. I think the dock will house a separate graphics card that the system will use in docked mode to give it the 4k visuals.
@westman98
I was just saying that you technically are right regardless of your comments' intentions (new hardware exclusives would not be 1st party big games, which is true I agree) there is a decent amount of evidence Nintendo has decided to not produce AAA titles in any meaningful output anymore.
I would bet that it is grand theft auto 5 as the one exclusive he knows about.
Is this like that cold reading thing, where you state something super obvious that's happened, in order to convince them your a psychic?
@teixeiras "I temember being really angry with nintendo, when I found out I could not play.minecraft in ds 2d."
And that was Nintendos fault, because...? Are you angry at Sony because... I don't know what "normal" people who play Minecraft would play on PlayStation... uhm... Are you angry at Sony because The Last of Us 2, from Naughty Dog, doesn't run on PS2?
Minecraft isn't even a Nintendo game. Why are you angry at Nintendo because of a game that's not even from them? And how are they to blame that you're using old hardware?
My PC from the 90s, which had 640KB memory can't even run Windows95. Better be angry at Microsoft now LOL... My Nokia 3310 doesn't have apps and LTE! Damn Nokia!!! I'M SOOOO ANGRY!!!!!11
If you take a look at how very different the 3DS and the New3DS are I'm actually surprised that nothing more happened with it... I had a 2DS and a New3DSXL. The performance improvement was quite noticeable... Pokemon ORAS even had moments that felt like the 2DS would think about what's supposed to do.
3DS: DUALcore @268MHz (The system is using ONE core for games, the other one for the operating system.)
128MB RAM @3.2GB/s
New3DS: QUADcore @804Mz, 256MB RAM @6.4GB/s, two additional buttons, one additional stick and NFC reader.
That's on the paper a really intense upgrade... Looks a lot more intense than what Pro and X are for PS and XBox. And they didn't do anything with it besides Fire Emblem Warriors and Xenoblade 3D. Oh well and Hyrule Warriors ran like garbage on the 2DS but, yeah what do you expect from a singlecore at 268MHz, really? Why are people whining so much about it? I don't get it. Nobody is forcing you to buy it, but when you don't want to buy it you need to live with the consequences of your actions. Why are people always angry and blaming other for their own actions?
Metroid prime 4 would almost certainly be one of them
@15roundTKO
I don't know how you define "AAA games" (Huge budget? Realistic graphics? Big marketing?), but Nintendo has plenty of high profile Switch games in the works.
@ARhollow
Sure, there is nothing wrong with the Switch Pro, and it is coming soon.
My point is that Switch Pro exists so Nintendo can have hardware with 4K support, not so they can rival PS5 and XBS in hardware specs
If they hide Zelda behind a new console, tons of people will sour on Nintendo, including me.
@WiltonRoots,
Pretty much everyday on here.
This is easily solved, make the game available on cloud for OG owners, and cartridge for Switch Pro owners. Not everyone will be happy, but that’s par for the course. I don’t know what 3rd party would want to ignore an install base of 80 million for a tiny fraction of that audience.
If Nintendo hold their first party exclusives behind the new switch it had better be a significant upgrade - at least on par with the Series S.
I'm not interested in PS4 Xb1 ports as I have already played the ones I'm interested In, and we are getting enhanced visuals on a lot of them for the New Gen - Gears 5 looks stunning on Series S
@TheWingedAvenger,
They would not do that, why miss out on the 80 million or so Switch users, if anything this will be a few third party titles which hardly sell well on the console in the first place.
@Ryu_Niiyama I don't have an issue with you. I sincerely hope you aren't reading it like that lol. I'm just chatting.
I dont mind games with exclusive Pro features, such as higher frame rate and 4K res (obviously,) but exclusive titles would be a slap in the face, especially major 1st party titles.
If you are going to have full blown exclusives, just call it what it is- a next gen console, instead of dancing around the bush.
Everybody is getting far too upset over rumours that point to a really small number of third-party ports that won’t run on the OG Switch.
@johnvboy
Exactly. This is for the niche that demands more power. There’s obviously a demand for ports from other systems, this would allow a few more. Although predicting what Nintendo will do is a fools game, the chances of them making big first party games exclusive to an upgraded Switch and instantly cutting off 80 million potential buyers is virtually zero. I know they did it once with Xenoblade on n3DS but they’ve learned from a lot of their mistakes in that era, I’m confident they’ll learn from that one (that game did not hold its price well!)
@johnvboy Yep, they managed to get a few articles out of SixtyDollarGate and AntiConsumerGate - tears were shed, people were called bootlickers by comment section freedom fighters, if only people in the real world knew or gave a toss about the epic wars that rage in here.
See you in tomorrow's Switch "Pro" comment section, where people will repost the same points as they did in this article and the ones that ran before. My bingo card is ready.
@Altina, I just had bought the last generation that could not play the games the previous models could... Between generations is expected, between models, no. The 2ds as out After the new 3ds... You think that consumer Will think new model, worst specs, yeahhh i gonna review the console states... Because, yes, its nintendo...
We have a pro, a normal on the market, consumer, please look well what u buy for your Son, it can or not work for your ir... Even if its the same console generation.... Heyy, go looks for specs, because if you have a nintendo, its because of specs not because being a causal console friendly....
If you take any other console, I never had this kind of issues, só it's verter not talo about them as example.
@sixrings they're all gonna pretend they always thought it was a good idea and likely to happen.
cuz people can never ever be wrong
I'm ok with this until bayo3 and prime 4 are exclusive! Dun Dunn dunnnnnn!!!!
@Rika_Yoshitake what did he say last week?
Yeah, sorry Nintendo, but if I wanted a “premium” gaming console, I’ll just get a good pc or ps5.
If all that was needed was 4K support, they could just release a 4K dock. The connection Nintendo uses is USB3 which IIRC could support sending data to a GPU inside the dock.
I think its a bit late for a minor-upgrade Switch Pro, I think what they would need is a Switch 2, backwards compatible, but to compete with XSX and PS5, the I/O throughput of the internals needs to be updated, as well as larger capacity game cards.
Sure thing, just bring CyberPunk,Assassin's Creed ,God of War, Spider-Man, Tekken 5 and many more great titles once no playable on Switch and you have a deal ....Otherwise I am not interested at re-buying a slightly enhanced model of a console i already own.... Better Battery, bigger screen etc are not good enough sell-points for me !
This totally will not be just like all those exclusives for the 32X, PS2 HDD, DSi, New 3DS that we all remember so well. Or even all those awesome games for the SNES Mouse, Wii Zapper thingy, Bongo drums, or other optional add-ons. This always works and never, never backfires when they upgrade a system or create an optional add-on.
What's the point in slightly upgrading? So we can finally get ports of last gen PS or Xbox games?
The only way big multiplatform releases come to switch seems to be cloud versions anyway.
I doubt a switch pro will fix any issues that the switch currently has (joy-con drift, unplayable online funtionality and terrible e-shop) since Nintendo is too arrogant to admit it was poorly designed in the first place.
So I much rather just get a switch 2 then some lousy upgrade.
@sixrings I'm not concerned about them merely running better on a pro Switch, I'm concerned about newer games running poorly on the original because they were programmed specifically for the pro model so the original can't handle them well. This happened with Hyrule Warriors Legends on the 3DS.
@dBackLash Nintendo should be fixing the joycon drift issues anyway. If they brag about fixing it for joycons that only work with the pro model, that should rightfully piss a lot of people off.
@SonOfStayPuft u dont know Nintendo
@teixeiras I really don't see your issue. So YOU're angry on Nintendo because YOU weren't able to play a third party title because YOU bought the wrong console because YOU failed to understand their super easy naming system? And now you complain about them not being casual friendly? I'm sorry, but...
<puts a 2DS on the left side>
<puts a New3DSXL on the right side>
Take a moment... Take a deep breath... It's okay, think about it. No stress...
Done? Okay...
The 3DS says "New", "3" is bigger than "2", and it says "XL". There you've three things even the grandma of a casual should easily understand. But it's okay, it's okay, most people prefer complaining about everything ever instead of thinking, no matter how easy you make things for them. That's why I'm not on "social" media anymore. I'm so tired of dealing with people that are angry 24/7 because they're too stupid to use their brain for once and think everything ever is about them, their feelings and their opinion (most people don't even have an own opinion but follow someone else instead. Often it's bound to politics. That's sad, that "normal" people make nearly everything about politics... You can't even be in an ANIMAL CROSSING group on Reddit without people annoying you with BLM, LGBT, Hongkong and whatever all the time. Ughh... Can't even play games for children these days without stupid people being annoying with their stupid hypocrite anger...)
...Also, the 2DS does look like cheap garbage, especially next to the N3DSXL, and costs like 70€. What DID you expect?? Really... If you want to be cheap and don't want to pay for a N3DSXL get a N2DSXL... It's technically the same as a N3DSXL, but without 3D-slider.
I don't care if there's a Pro or not, really. Though, if there's going to be one I'm going to get one. I don't need a "premium" console, whatever that's, I go where the Japanese games are. The path Sony (or rather PlayStation California, the HQ since 2016) is taking is going to reduce the amount of Japanese games on PlayStation, which is why I'm on Nintendo now for a Month. There are a lot of people, and even companies (some of them even said they're stopping to support PlayStation. And Switch got a lot of ports lately and will get a lot of ports in future), angry at Sony at the moment. Where else are we supposed to go if not to Nintendo? Exactly. The XBox X and even a NASA PC wouldn't do anything for me. I'm pretty sure Nintendo noticed too that there's quite a movement at the moment. I'm for sure not the only person who switched from a PS4 Pro to a Switch.
And what most people tend to forget, as you can see in this comment section here too, is that there are more games out there than western Triple-Meh bLocKbuStoRs, Nintendo and indies. There are a lot of people out there who barely play western games. I would rather have a good story and well written characters (that also have a frickin backstory!!) than TripleMeh graphics... But yeah whatever... The last TripleA game I played was FarCry New Dawn. It was a gift, would've never bought that because I was done with Ubipoop. I dunno, it was as "empty" as all the other western games. You're nobody, have no story, have not really anything to say, run around forever, kill thousands of people for no real reason, horribly written characters, nearly non-existent story... Boring...
So, if a Switch Pro brings more Japangames, sure, why not? Also, it would maybe be an option for SquareEnix to put Final Fantasy somewhere, if the PS5 version isn't going to sell acceptable. I mean, everyone knows it doesn't look that nextgen-y because they've a PS4-release as Plan B.
However, most people don't care about Japanese games anyway, because even on a fan-site for a Japanese console (...here) the boring people are angry about "weird Japanese crap". WRONG PLATFORM, DUDE!! <sigh> Meh... Anyway, when most people don't care about these games or about ports of western games (by the way, if you didn't yet get Saints Row 3. One of the few western games that's actually FUN!) then... WHY is there so much drama about the Switch Pro everywhere? I don't understand why people always make drama about things they "don't care about". Ughh...
@teixeiras I should stay in my happy happy bubble? ...Wish I could. I was never happy in my life. I have so intense depressions that they're one of the reasons why I'm in early retirement.
I don't see how you need to be a nerd to understand that a console that says "New" IN THE PRODUCT NAME is probably better than the one without it...
I'm aware that most people are kinda stupid... Like, at school I even got attacked because I aced it without any effort...
But I really don't understand why the stupid people are always angry and attacking other people and companies for their own stupidity. Really, you don't need to be a "nerd" to understand that a "New 3DS XL" is probably better than a "2DS". That's not scam. That's just you not using your brain...
Also, what's with the end of life argument? The PS4 Pro is still 400€. Some electronics store sold it here just last week IN A SALE with Death Stranding for 439€. <shrugs> Just because people throw their stuff away when something new comes doesn't mean it actually suddenly is worthless...
Also, we're talking about Nintendo, right? Nintendo stuff never got cheaper over time, only more expensive. Like, go to eBay and lookup A Link to the Past for SNES. Or Pokemon Emerald. Or any other old Nintendo game everyone ever has anyway. I mean, Zelda and Pokemon aren't exactly niche...
@Altina ok
i wont worry with this exclusive for pro switch, i will play that game on lite with max overclock yay!!!
@Rayquaza2510 no, doom eternal wont run at native 1080p 60fps, even youre using the best mobile chip on planet, 1080p 30fps is more likely, from 720p to 1080 the resolution is jump more than 100%
the witcher 3 playable force native 720p30fps at 921mhz aka 20% overclock on base docked setting, the pro will maxout at 1080p nothing more, and use dlss to upscale on higher res
yay atleast developer will create best graphics on mobile after pro version came out, so mariko switch will able to play on handheld mode at max overclock and get same graphics
Sounds like the pro will just be the new 3ds all over again, how many exclusive games did it have one of two?
This is a poor statement-
"...it made a handful of titles exclusive to the New Nintendo 3DS. One of the first ones was Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, which no doubt provided some extra sales for the company. So it wouldn't be a surprise if a Switch revision followed a similar pattern."
There were only ever two games, albeit it should have been 3 (looks at Hyrule Warriors), do you not wonder why there wasn't more? I can't help but think it's because they didn't sell well so were not really worth the effort.
Could also be why they opted to release the definitive edition of XC on switch and already had ports of FEW and HW on the switch.
I think too if you look at other consoles that have done similar, there hasn't really been exclusives for the pro machine, likely because of the same reason, splitting your userbase isn't recommended.
BotW 2 will run at 60 fps on the New Switch and 30 fps on the old one. That's how Nintendo will make people upgrade.
@Octane Just fix the drift yourself...it's a very simple process.
@Gwynbleidd 🤦 You can fix drift yourself in like 5 mins. I did it like 2 years ago and haven't had a single problem since.
@suikoden yeah, but the New3DS was the definitive, and best 3DS model. (I owned each version at some point, except the hinged 2DS, which is probably on the same level of quality just without the 3D, I would imagine)
@Altina I agree with you 95%! You're spot on with people not using their brains and actually being individuals and not part of a hive mind. Buuuuut. That -5% was about the 2DS, while it is a budget system to the 3DS, it isn't that bad at all. I used one for a long while after my top OG 3DS screen cracked (T.T) and I was looking for a cheap alternative at the time until I eventually upgraded to the N3DSXL down the line. It does its job well and it is surprisingly comfortable to hold. Had pretty good battery life as well.
@DrDaisy Thank you for the one instance this has happened on Nintendo consoles. 👍 I believe it did warn people and say it plays better on the newer console, if I remember correctly?
@dBackLash Wouldn't the "Switch 2" be considered an upgrade? 🤔
@HXLXIII You can stow the sarcasm. That's the only instance I can think of. I doubt it's the only instance period. Also, if the warning only shows up when you start the game, it's irrelevant, like those stupid terms of use in those Namco games you only see after buying said games.
@sixrings well I don't think Xbox have to do that much to be honest. XBOX is a brand and purchasing an Xbox console is merely one way to play Xbox games and join the Xbox ecosystem, I have Xbox Gamepass Ultimate, and use it on both my Xbox One X and gaming PC. And I think there were a good 50 million Xbox One consoles sold so they did just fine.
@HXLXIII Switch U
