The first visual tease for the upcoming Sonic movie sequel has dropped, revealing the official name for the new film: Sonic the Hedgehog 2. How did they come up with that?
Yes, the ten-second clip above showcases the new film's name and logo, while confirming that the planned 8th April 2022 release date is still very much the target. Speaking about the film's name, the video's description reads, "Groundbreaking. Thought-provoking. Extremely obvious." They got that right.
Towards the end of last year, British Columbia Film Commission documents suggested that production on the new movie would begin in March 2021, which is obviously just around the corner. It was also reported that the film has a budget of more than $20 million.
Will you be speeding into theatres to watch this one? Did you like the original? Tell us below.

This is just begging for a Snydercut-esque BluRay release "Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & Knuckles"
Can't wait for the movie: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles
Oh my jesus. Screw godzilla vs kong and tom and jerry movie. I see a teaser and i already wanna watch this
Dear God, please heal the world from Covid19 virus so we can live normally and watch Sonic 2 movie.
Amen.
The Sonic voice actor is played by a human, this is even more digusting than the stuff going down in the Resident Evil movie!!! ;p
I like how the 2 implies that Tails will have a major role in this sequel. I can’t wait to see how the story continues from the first movie.
I am so excited for this. And hopefully the makers of this movie won't completely screw up Tails's design like they did Sonic's.
Can't wait for this movie its going to be great. I love the refrence they have on top of the fact that the next movie after two is going to have knuckles (Come on we all know its going to)
That Emerald Hill zone remix and Tails effect.
Donkey: "Sonic 2? What kind of title is that? What about Sonic 2: Day of the Donkey!" oh boy "Or Sonic 2: Donkey's Revenge..."
@jump exactly I hope they give all the two tailed foxes out there a fair shot at getting the role of Tails or I will boycott this movie.
@BigBluePanda Just from sonic 2 OH MAN ITS HITING ME.
They very obvious Sonic 2 on the MegaDrive homage with the music and the addition of tales. I truly hope they wait for Sonic 3 before we get Knuckles!
@ObeseChihuahua2
his design was already shown off in the mid credit scene of the first movie

Gotta say the movie had a ton of charm, surprised considering how tone deaf they were with the initial design.
Too bad we'll never see a horrifying versions of other characters like the first Sonic draft
im not a huge sonic fan but i absolutely loved the sonic movie. excited to watch this!
LETS GOOO I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS
EMERALD HILL MUSIC!!! I AM ABSOLUTELY ELATED!!!
I still need to watch the first one.
I really liked the original, will definitely watch this. Here's hoping the chemical plant appears in some form in this sequel, Sonic 2 for me is all about that chemical plant.
Oh wow. Didn’t think it would be this early.
Heh
They use Emerald Hill Music
But that's probably 100% not in the film
It'll just be another completely inoffensive kids movie with a human side character and practically no actual locales from the games outside the rare flashback sequence or the end credits
I have these Hollywood people figured out. Fool me once with Chipmunks, fool me twice with Smurfs. Even Mortal Kombat is shoving in a random ass OC who didn't originate from anything in the games lmao
Somehow, they managed to make such a comeback from the first movie. After initial impressions were disappointing, they turned it around and created a really fun movie packed with plenty of charm. Now that they have a dedicated fanbase going, the pressure is on that they don't screw the sequel up. I really hope this is everything the fans want it to be. The title announcement already says it will be.
If it's got heavy sonic 2 influence, i'll watch it
@TheFrenchiestFry nah theyve pretty much already confirmed that the first movie was to establish sonic and eggmans history
the second movie will more than likely return to sonics world considering how it was teased in the first film, and the director said they'll definitely explore stuff like super sonic and the chaos emeralds eventually
I liked detective pikachu better because pikachu didn't floss, otherwise I liked the movie
My birthday is April 7th... Happy Birthday!!! In 2022, I'm very ok with this releasing the day after, as someone who loved the first Sonic movie, I'm excited for this sequel. Will see it in the theaters, but only if a certain worldwide problem goes away.
Didn't watch the first movie but if the second leans more into the actual Sonic universe and characters (which it seems to be doing) I definitely plan to see them both.
I hope Robotnik befriends Knuckles and starts collecting the Chaos Emeralds while convincing Knuckles that Sonic is evil.
@MushHill_Act1-1 Oh, yeah. Forgot about that. The one movie I don't sit through all of the credits.....
Hopefully the second film takes place 100% off Earth and with no humans except Dr. Robotnik. I went into the first with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised.
i think, like others on here, this movie was a true surprise and had no right being as good as it ended up being. so kudos to the team! here's hoping this outing is just as good!
A budget of OVER $20 MILLION?!? Wow, they sure have a lot of confidence in this movie, don't they???
(For the sarcasm-challenged, $20m covers about 30 seconds of a AAA film's production. This is either a big typo, or they are totally not planning on Sonic being anything but a supersonic cash grab.)
You heard it here first, I have some plot details. Robotnik finds the rotting carcass of the original Sonic design and re-animates him complete with metallic parts, rocket shoes and human teeth. Robotnik proudly names his new creation/sidekick 'Metal Sonic' and together they build the planet destroying Death Egg. With Earth in his sights, and the Death Egg fully powered up by Kyber Crystals... eh Chaos Emeralds, it is up to Sonic and Tales to complete a daring trench run in their trusty bi-plane in order to drop a payload into the exposed exhaust vent of the Death Egg before Robotnik obliterates Earth.
Hopefully it does well enough to earn another sequel (a third movie)
...you know, I never did get around to seeing the first movie.
My nephew is very excited that a sequel is coming as Tails was his favorite character so may take him to go see this next one.
If the theaters are still closed by that day, I'm going to riot theaters for not opening up and allowing fans to see it. Screw the pandemic
Actually really excited about this. That version of Emerald Hills got me so hyped. The first movie is schlock, but man was it fun schlock. It captured the dopiness and fun of Sonic more than I think any of us could have hoped for. Might even be my favorite video game movie.
I was kinda upset this morning. The fact that Mario Kart Tour has the new Pauline in a special pipe made my day bad, but this, puts a smile on my face
Really curious how this sequel will work out. I feel like one of the biggest strengths to the first movie was that expectations were so low. Even with the re-design, folks were looking forward to a movie to mock, but it turned out surprisingly decent.
Now that a bar has been set, it'll be curious where they'll take this. Will they keep it safe for the casuals, or will they lean more into the fan stuff?
Still haven’t seen the first one. Eventually though.
Can't wait to see Tails and Knuckles. Hopefully we can get the revolutionary army at some point.
@JasmineDragon So, "30 seconds" is continued sarcasm, right? If that were true, Avengers Endgame would've cost over seven billion dollars. Its budget was $356 million. So, $20 million covers about 10 minutes of the 181 minute film, one of the three biggest budgets of all time. For comparison, here are the six Oscar nominees from 2020 for best picture according to Wikipedia:
The Irishman: $159-250 million
Ford V. Ferrari: $97.6 million
1917: $95 million
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood: $90-96 million
Joker: $55-70 million
Little Women: $40 million
Marriage Story: $18 million
Parasite (winner): $15.5 million
Jojo Rabbit: $14 million
The first Sonic movie had a budget of $81-95 million.
@ObeseChihuahua2 they show off Tails at the end of the first movie
@ianl579 maybe you should watch the first movie. It teases the "sonic universe" (whatever that is). The movie is not based on the comics or any tv show but more so of the games.
This small teaser alone has me very hyped for this movie. I can't wait to watch next year!
StH was last film I saw in the cinema before pandemic shut cinemas in the UK, glad I got to see a surprisingly good flick before Odeon temporarily closed their doors.
@Jbuggydroid Yeah, I forgot they did that.
They needed a trailer to announce it is called Sonic the Hedgehog 2?
@TheFrenchiestFry I like how you started the post with "heh" and then said you've got these Hollywood people figured out. You're so cool.
Right, so when can the mobile version of Sonic 2 be sold on consoles? Come on, SEGA, this is the perfect time to sell Sonic 2 on the Switch for the third time!
@TheFrenchiestFry To be fair, "The Chipmunks" always took place on Earth with a human side character.
In any case, the first Sonic movie actually pulled off the concept pretty well.
I hope the second is as good as the first. There were some haters but the first movie exceeded my expectations (1) for being a Sonic related thing (2) for being a video game made into a movie. The movie was just genuinely fun. It wasn't an emmy-award winner, but it's a video game movie, it just needs to be fun.
2022: MARIO VS SONIC! Again....
@Bret Exaggeration, not sarcasm, but close enough.
@Lanmanna
Is that something wrong with my drawing ? 🤨
This is my alter ego, as Ice Skate Boxer.
And i named him with my real name as well.
And I think I'll turn that jingle into a tone. Very nice!
They know which buttons to push.
Two tails on the 2, and the green hills theme from the corresponding game. ^^
@reporterdavid
Mario and Sonic 2022 at Beijing.... Again after year 2008. But it will be Winter sports.
Kudos! I hate subtitles.
The first wasn’t too bad, but looks like tails will be in it, if it was knuckles, I would be there in a flash, but tails? I’ll just wait until it’s on Sky
@Anti-Matter Also: the movies..... Sonic 2 vs Super Mario (Universal)
