Oof, it's been a while since we booted up Ring Fit Adventure. Our bones have returned to their previously creaky state, and our muscles to marshmallow. But it seems like Nintendo Japan know we've been struggling, so they've just published some tips and tricks courtesy of Murata-san, from the editorial department of Tarzan, a Japanese fitness magazine.
We will note that these tips have been imperfectly transformed from Japanese to English by Google Translate, but we'll try our best to figure out exactly what Murata is saying.
Tip One: Be humble
"If you are not confident in your fitness," says Murata, "don't worry." Ring Fit Adventure asks you what your fitness level is when you start, and there's no need to try to be impressive - it might just end in you thinking that exercise is too hard for you. "You can adjust the settings at any time," Murata points out - so it's in your favour to underestimate your fitness level to begin with.
Tip Two: Don't force yourself to play every day
Although Ring Fit Adventure comes with a daily alarm feature to remind you to exercise, it's not the only way to stay fit. Murata advises players to "keep a pace", and not to force themselves into a daily routine, since it will feel more like a chore. With 23 Adventure Worlds, it would take a player 3 months to get through it with 30 minutes' playtime a day - so Murata is more keen to play 2-3 times a week to get the most of the game.
Tip Three: Equipment makes a difference in real life and in the game
Prepare yourself properly for exercise - Murata recommends wearing shorts, using a yoga mat, and drinking protein shakes after playing. Likewise, in the game, he recommends buying the clothing upgrades that increase your stats and make it a little easier to play.
Tip Four: Prepare well for battles
Don't forget about smoothies - Ring Fit Adventure's version of health-restoring and attack-increasing potions - and make sure to pay attention to the colour-matching mechanic that deals extra damage to enemies. With multiple enemies, use attacks with a wider range, and try to take out enemies like the Matta Rays first, since they can revive fallen foes.
Tip Five: Don't be afraid to push yourself!
Check your activity log regularly to self-evaluate, and see if you need to change the difficulty or increase the amount of time you spend on the game. But don't forget to encourage yourself, too, says Murata - "praise yourself to the fullest!"
Have you fallen off Ring Fit too? Do these tips help at all, or were you hoping for something a little more along the lines of "input the Konami Code to get a six-pack"? Let us know below.

Tip 6: Be born with the genetics that make being fit physically easier to achieve. Want to eat that pizza? No problem, if you've got the genes
The rest of us unwashed masses will make do trying to make up for it with hard work and depression.
@aznable quite true, reminds me of that 'Family Guy' skit, with Michael Chiklis from 'The Shield': 'It doesn't matter how much I work out, I will. Never. Be. Muscular'
Tip 7 : Don't eat the Ring Fit. It's NOT a Donut.
I've just gotten back into it after taking 6 months or so off. Just reached world 9, so I guess it's gonna take sometime before I finish it.
I just rolled the credits four days ago and I'm in the "new game+" now. It has really helped me this quarantine.
Nope, too fat. Also I smoke. A gentle slope puts me into hyperventilation territory. Goodbye, Ring Fit Adventure, I hardly knew ye
Even being handicapped (right leg amputee) I find that most exercises can be done, even squatting in place. Low squats suck though.
At this point, I haven't touched the game in a few months, and don't really feel like swapping out cartridges all the time.
But on the brighter side, I did end up buying some economical excerise equipment, and have been keeping up with that regularly, and I feel I'm getting more beneficial workouts that way. Which is definitely a place that my lazy ass wouldn't have gotten to without using Ring Fit as a stepping stone to get there.
So even in not wanting to play it, I still appreciate it for what it is, and know it's waiting for me when I inevitably fall off the wagon completely right around my birthday.
Best Tip: Find Your Motivation To Stay Fit
If you don't have the proper motivation, its a lost cause. It becomes a lot easier to stick to a routine if you know exactly why you're exercising.
Some folks simply want to look good for their own satisfaction or to attract a potential mate. If you remind yourself why you are doing this, it'll become a fun habit and you'll see the results.
For myself, I want to look good and I want to have a healthy body when I get old. I strongly encourage folks to push themselves-- but you have to start with the motivation factor first. (I think "to get healthy" is not really a motivator for some people, so just be honest with yourself and you'll build that healthy habit.)
I'm still trying to fit in Ring Fit when I can, but I don't get many opportunities outside of the weekend.
I'm pretty unfit and some of the exercises I've done seem to cause real pain in my external oblique abdominal muscles.
The workout clothes I wear aren't ideal for the leg strap either, it always slides off and it makes it harder to register proper squats in the software. I think it is causing me to over-exert myself.
another thing i rarely seen brought up, make sure to wash the gear regularly too. its still fabric and sweat and dirt will still stick to it
i got back into the game a few days ago. its much better to play occasionally than nearly everyday. i just got out of a ring fit burnout that lasted a few months
@RupeeClock same, i gave up trying to place the leg strap over my shorts and just have it directly on my leg now. and i press start to recalibrate my gear position if i have to
@UnseatingKDawg low squats are the devil! I usually end up swearing at the screen when they come up
@TheBigK Well, you know yourself the best, so I won’t try to sell you on it (much).
The one thing I really like about it is that you get to choose the exercises that you do during the battles. Mountain climbers are so off my list. So you can customize it to fit your preferences and abilities.
However, the running in place is part of the game and might be too much for you. There is a quiet mode for apartments where you bounce in place instead of jogging in place. So that might be an option.
I love ring fit. It’s a great work out and is very fun to do. I recommend it to anyone who doesn’t get a chance to work out or move around much during the day. If you’re already big into fitness and doing other work outs it may not be for you. I personally do a lot of ddp yoga and cardio so it fits nicely into my existing routine.
With over 200 days played these tips read like advertising. Never used the different clothes for the whopping 5% damage increase. That just gives you 1 or maybe 2 less reps of the lightest exercises in the game. My tip do lots of squats, those will wear you out the most
@aznable
As someone who has lost 40 lbs since august and can directly point a lot of that effort towards Ring Fit Adventure I say that your argument is only valid within a very small minority of people.
It really is a magnificent piece of technology and also a damn great jrpg.
@Timppis Wow that's a great result - good for you! I'm just at the start of RFA (day 5) and I'm currently slightly over 15 Stone. 40 lbs would get me around a much desired 12 Stone. May I ask how much your RFA exercise time is generally (not playtime) and how often you play. I'm guessing it's increased over time? and maybe you do other exercises too?
@brunojenso
When I begun I did 4-6 sessions a week with game time between 30-45 minutes, so 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes real time.
As I started to lose weight and had chance to do some other excercise too I actually started doing less with RFA. I have now maintained my current weight for about a month and I do 1-2 sessions of RFA, for about 45-60 minutes at a time a week but I also do bouldering at least twice a week and orienteering and cross country or other endurance sports once a week.
I completed Ring Fit last year but New Game Plus wasn't a draw for me. Hoping they announce some DLC in the Direct because getting to the end was what was keeping me going and once I saw credits I was like "Cool, done with that" and didn't go back.
@Timppis Good work sticking with it.
@Timppis Thank you
