While we sort of already know what to expect from amiibo functionality in Nintendo Switch games nowadays, it's always nice to know exactly what will happen when they're scanned in a certain game.
In the case of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, it's a game divided into two different adventures.
To use an amiibo in Super Mario 3D World, you need to bring up a little amiibo symbol and then scan your figure in. Here's the full explanation, courtesy of Destructoid:
"Using amiibo in Mario 3D World portion is very straight-forward: you hold left on the d-pad while playing to bring up the amiibo symbol prompt when in a level, then scan. 99% of figures create random power-ups or a 1UP mushroom."
As already stated on the official game site, Cat Mario summons an invincible White Cat suit, and Cat Peach can create randomised power-ups - but seemingly has no "special" functionality.
In the new add-on adventure Bowser's Fury, the "two main figures" for this mode are Bowser and Bowser Jr, and "everything else will summon random power-ups". Once again, you hold left on the D-Pad to scan in figures. Here's the source's full rundown:
"Using Bowser on the amiibo NFC point will immediately wake Fury Bowser from his slumber. While this is normally a hazard that needs to be managed and avoided, calling upon Bowser does have its perks, as certain walls/obstacles can only be destroyed by Fury Bowser's abilities. So if you need him to immediately appear to enter a specific area, you don't have to wait for him. We did test multiple Bowser amiibo, and figures like wedding Bowser will also perform the same functionality."
"Bowser Jr. is special too, allowing you to unleash an explosion of sorts. You can't spam it as it has a cooldown: there's not much more to it!"
It's worth noting the Bowser and Bowser Jr. amiibo are not classed as unique/special in Super Mario 3D World.
So, there you go - that's how amiibo functionality works in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. If you would like to learn even more about the game, be sure to check out our own preview.

Oh great, more free invincibility,..
So odd how Cat Peach is essentially useless. I actually bought Cat Mario because it does something exclusive.
It would have been cool if you could scan the Rosalina amiibo to unlock her as a playable character early.
Pretty lame, not worth buying the new figures over-unless one wants them mostly for collectable purposes.
Aw man, I wish that Cat Peach did something more. I'll still buy it because of course I will, but if only...
Ugh. So, Cat Peach's functionality is merely generic? Typical.
Bowser and Bowser Jr.'s functionality sounds really cool though. It would have made more sense to make a Bowser Jr. "Super Mario" series figurine instead (as cute as Cat Peach is), and possibly a Cat Bowser amiibo due to his unique functionality.
Another way they could have incorporated amiibo without arousing too much ire is if Mario could switch over to his Dr. Mario, Wedding, Gold, Silver, or 8-bit outfits if you scan the appropriate amiibo, and likewise if one were to scan the Wedding amiibo for Peach. Scanning the Rosalina amiibo to unlock her early would have also been a nice touch.
Another fun thing they could have done is incorporate Goomba and Koopa amiibo so that they could be spawned at virtually any time in order for the scanning player to sabotage their team-mates in local multiplayer for "poo" & giggles.
sigh So much untapped (no pun intended) potential...
Darn... and I have a lot of unique Mario series amiibo. Gold and Silver Mario don’t even do anything special? Sheesh. Guess I’ll have the new ones on standby. Like @Silly_G said, a lot of untapped potential.
@VR32X : Surprisingly, even though they were produced in extremely limited quantities, the developers bothered to incorporate exclusive functionality for gold/silver Mario variants (after a little research) in Mario Party 10, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, Mario Maker, and Mario and Sonic at the Rio Olympic Games 2016.
I am not sure if any other games specifically recognise gold/silver Mario though.
@Silly_G Yeah... had a lot of fun with them on my Wii U back when I finally got them. Its a shame they’re just novelty on the Switch now.
So cat peach does a random power up but the other amiibos do random power ups plus 1 ups? Am i wrong or does the cat peach amiibo seems inferior
@VR32X Considering how well Amiibo sold, I'm not sure why they've been downgraded to little more than collectables on Switch. I have some Amiibo for Switch games, but I haven't been impressed with their functionality. My Super Mario Odyssey wedding Amiibo have gotten more action in Mario Party 10 and Ultra Smash on Wii U than with the game they were supposed to accompany.
@Handy_Man what a splendid idea!!
Never cared for Amiibo and always hated the fact that it basically serves as DLC or additional functionality in a game (or multiple games) that requires a physical item.
But apparently I'm in the minority and tons of people seem to love Amiibo.
To me, it's not much better than Pokemon Company selling Mew for €50, oh and you get a (worthless) Pokeball Plus controller with it.
Amiibo are pretty much just for collectibility purposes now except the few games where it seems they act as helpers/cheats.
In the UK they are not sold in stores and can only be found online.
@noutBr Amiibo are cheaper and unlimited though
I think Cat Mario might be useful for my younger children. I'm in the UK and I can only see him sold in a double pack with Cat Peach though. Can you not buy them individually?
@Mr_Humpf sadly only the double pack here in the UK. I would’ve loved to buy just cat Mario 🙁
Why can't nintendo create an awesome game were your amiibos are brought to life? Honestly I love Amiibos but their functionality is a curiosity at most
The Super Mario characters (including Smash Bros Piranha Plant) give you a Super Star, not a 1-UP Mushroom. It is NOT random.
Cat Peach gives you a random powerup but it’s not like the other amiibo, she can give you a Tanooki Flower or a Cat Suit or a Boomerang Suit etc.
Nintendo’s site even details it all here.

@AlbertXi your comment makes absolutely no sense whatsoever as the amiibo are basically plastic renditions of the characters they are representing. They are already bought to life in the games. Cat Mario in 3D World, Bayonetta in Smash etc
@TheFox
Wanna play Mario Tennis?
@JSDude1 For most people I should think this is true of every amiibo and every game that uses them. Even the cool and interesting unlocks are not worth the money to most unless they are also interested in the collectible nature as well.
If it is TOO interesting, of course, then some people are upset it is behind a toy paywall.
I have a bunch of amiibo and no regrets because the game interaction is mostly bonus value. I will admit that the functionality did sway me towards a purchase in a couple cases. Probably wouldn't have Falco otherwise, for instance.
mm.m could have skipped cat peach then... luckily i still have wedding bowser
Greeeeeat, the White Suits are back. @_@
As long as it has function that is good otherwise still a good to have in my Amiibo collection.
great, mario kart tour has infected 3d world. pay for cat mario to win.
Does Skylander Bowser work? I know the DK one is accepted as an amiibo by some games but gives an error in others.
@NerdyBoutKirby Not sure of the accuracy, but according to the following site, the answer is yes:
https://amiibo.life/amiibo/skylanders-superchargers/hammer-slam-bowser
If you look at the Japan website for the game it say the following
(says the Microsoft translator) When you touch amibo of "Cat Mario"
Super Mario 3D World and Fury World will both spawn items that can be transformed into the invincible cat Mario.
When you touch the amibo of "Cat Peach"
Power-ups will appear randomly in both Super Mario 3D World and Fury World.
When you touch the amibo of "Bowser"
Super Mario 3D World will spawn Superstars.
Fury World forcibly launches Fury Mode.
When you touch the amibo of "Bowser Jr.",
Super Mario 3D World will spawn Superstars.
Fury World activates a shockwave similar to the POW Block.
If you touch the amibo of the character that appears in the "Super Mario" series other than the above
Superstars will appear in Both Super Mario 3D World and Fury World.
Otherwise, if you touch amiibo
"1UP Mushrooms" will appear in Super Mario 3D World and "Super Mushrooms" will appear in Fury World.
I have the cat Mario and cat peach amiibos for my kids but is there a way to use them when they’re playing co-op mode by splitting the controller?
Cheers
