Update: Europe is now included in this offer, too.
Original Story [Mon 28th Dec, 2020 20:30 GMT]: Starting this Wednesday, December 30th and ending on January 5th, anyone from Canada, the US, and Mexico with a Nintendo Switch Online membership will get access to a free, one-week trial of Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled on the Switch. Damn you, fine print - couldn't you have given us Europeans a bit of fun, too?
(Unrelatedly, here's a link where we show you how to create a Japanese eShop account.)
Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled came out in 2019, as a remake of the PlayStation original with more stuff and better graphics. We gave it a tidy 8/10, noting that it has a few issues, like its 30FPS cap and its "tricky AI", but recommended it anyway for its "visually phenomenal" upgrade of a classic.
How do you feel about these region-specific freebies? Let us know in the comments!

Oh come on:( Danish guy here, so no Crash racing for me. When does Europe get these free trials:(
Might check this out. Doubt it'll convince me to buy the full game, but it'll be fun to kill an hour or two on a decent freebie.
This game is amazing, please pick up this trial!
Gotta sell those Microtransactions.
...Isn't that the FULL-PRICED game that still has in-game purchases in it? >.>
Fellow Europeans don't fret, mario kart is far superior in every way, your not missing much
Hey NintendoLife you need to git gud. Upcoming game trial shows on https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch-download-software/Crash-Team-Racing-Nitro-Fueled-1494955.html
I'll give this a shot if I remember when it releases.
i'm going to check it out probably wont make me buy it.
Very good cart racer. Enjoyed it.
I've waited for a chance to try out Rune Factory 4 Special all this time, and this is what we get? How disappointing...
I mean, I'm not against other people trying this game out, but...I already bought this game back in July. Why is it that Europe and Japan got a chance to try Rune Factory 4 Special, but not the US?
These trials should instead work like PS Plus where it is added to your library for being an online subscriber (and require an active subscription to play later). They are also for games that are well past their original release window so it's not like it turns away potential buyers, instead adds value to an already affordable online service with very few perks at the time of writing.
The load times are okay on Series X, but were a train wreck on the XBox One. Anyone know whether the Switch loads any faster?
I wanted to get this game but then they had to include microtransaction stuff and turned me off from the game completely. I know, I know, 'it's not manditory'. Just the fact that they put them in there is enough to turn me away. I don't want anything to do with games that have this jank practice inserted in any way shape or form.
They need to make a clearer distinction between online for Nintendo of Europe, Japan, and America so people don't get confused/hyped to be then disappointed.
I prefer Team Sonic Racing but is it normal for Nintendo to give out 3rd party trials like this? And a rival kart game... Wishful thinking but hoping this has something to do with Crash Bandicoot 4 coming to Switch or Crash in Smash Bros!
I will try it then although I am not really into kart racers.
Oh come on, I'm in the UK! That really suc... Oh wait, I already have it in my ever increasing backlog.
It's a fun kart racer. It's no mario kart tho
"But only if you're in the US, Canada, or Mexico"
Goddamn i hate clickbait.
Was going to download it but I think we own it. 🤷♂️
May download it anyway b/c it may help the numbers if Nintendo looks at those types of things for future decision making.
Do you think Nintendo America would ever put a short, singleplayer game on trial? While I do like the games they put on trial (I put alot of time into the ARMS trial earlier this year) and I do plan on downloading CTR, it is interesting when you see Nintendo Japan offering trials of Celeste, Dead Cells and Captain Toad and NOA's closest offering is Disgaea, which, while is singleplayer, takes way more time to beat than the window of time given for its trial earlier this year.
@JustMe Yeah never felt a purposeful grind as disgusting as this game. Took an age for one character you have to hope randomly appears in the store never mind karts, skins, wheels etc.
A shame as the actual game is the best kart racer in years and the free dlc tracks are wonderful. Pure greed ruins it.
@BeautyandtheBeer I believe they also made it harder to grind for coins around the time they added microtransactions. That was the moment I sold the game.
Unless it's 60fps, I wouldn't play it even if they gave it away for free 👎
@Jmjfrank Yeah remember seeing Caddi's videos on YT about it at the time of the change. Sadly never experienced it prior to that.
The daily or weekly coin challenges gave you a pittance and online was pretty much dead when I played which made it worse.
@Joeynator3000 Ignore the microtransactions, the game itself is great, dude.
The trial is also for Europe
@Prizm Agreed. Bought it on Switch not realizing it was 30fps. Bought it later on sale for Xbox and deleted the Switch version. It's like a whole different game.
480 in handheld mode from what sources say. I bought it for xbox and it's a great game though.
@Egit-kun I didn't even realize it had micros and I have about 10 hours into it.
Given it takes a ton of time to buy some characters who cares, it doesn't skimp with the roster at all.
So does this work like PS+ freebies, where you download it during the timeframe and it's playable as long as you are a Nintendo + subscriber? Or is it only playable until the 5th?
@Clyde_Radcliffe Crash in smash? No, probably not for the time being. Crash Bandicoot 4 port? That's quite likely.
It's 30 fps locked on PS4, what's the difference?
Ah yes, the game that patched in microtransactions after launch so they wouldn't affect initial review scores and publicity is now offering a free trial to bring in fresh customers, a time-honored tactic used by drug dealers the world over. Sheesh.
Nah, that game has micro transactions. Boycott.
Love the unrelated link haha
@Grot I get the concern of losing sales on linear adventures and that multiplayer games can benefit from a trial, allowing you to get hooked with its gameplay. But it's interesting that Japan's mindset on what to throw on trial is different from North America's.
I wonder if they have different mindsets on what's being sold exactly. Perhaps North America thinks of these trials as a way to sell games while Japan thinks of these trials as a way to increase subscription numbers.
great game:) ignore the demo, just buy it.
Crash for Smash Ultimate confirm?
I would stay away. The drifting mechanics are rage inducing.
I feel like this game still needs some patches...
The loading times are long for the kind of game this is, I really dislike the internet requirement for earning Wumpa Coins and viewing the "in-game" shop. I played it in split-screen multiplayer for the first time about a week ago, the performance was playable, but notably worse than single-player, and after a few races the game crashed.
I still played it a lot, and I've enjoyed my time with it, but from a performance standpoint, I would've greatly preferred if it had been ported by specialists like Panic Button.
@GilbertXI it's available in Europe too, the article needs updating
Great kart racer, don’t get the hate the micro transactions are very much optional and in no way does not purchasing them make the game any worse!
Shop around because you can pick the full game up for around 20 bags
Good game, really enjoyed this on PS4. Worth a look. Nice to have a decent single-player story mode too.
@Gwynbleidd It's not a demo, it's the WHOLE GAME!
Everyone complaining about this game is just bad at it.
I already downloaded it and I am waiting to play.
Play a time trial for a bit to get used to the drift boosting. This game is amazing. I love MK8 and CTR.
Kinda surprised they'd offer CTR for free for a week.
@snatcher As a tutorial, play story mode on easy till you beat the first boss. I was able to play on normal difficulty after I did that.
If you can't keep up with first place, you probably haven't found the track shortcut. I had to use youtube to find a few very well hidden shortcuts. (Or select speed style for your character, for the higher top speed.)
@swedetrap it’s 30fps on all systems...
@Auggie_Plays_Games
Just set up an Account from another region and you can get all the demos
@Gwynbleidd
Playing a game tells you much more than someone writing about it 🤷♂️
@swedetrap
It’s 30FPS even on Xbox One X
Loved the original but I will never buy it as it has in game purchases. Black or white, line in the sand. Now I can take a stab for free, am I comprising my principles if I try it?
@Gwynbleidd All the reviews said Hollow Knight was great and I didn't like it. So yeah, trying it is preferable.
"Damn you, fine print - couldn't you have given us Europeans a bit of fun, too?"
(dislikes vulgar language in the article)
This is a pretty epic gift for those that haven't played this gem yet, but I have played the game already quite a bit. I haven't played it in close to a year though!
Clicked through 84 pages of licensing and privacy, and then saw the microtransactions. I already have Mario Kart, so deleted.
@TryToBeHopeful what are micro transactions ?
