As many Mario fans noticed yesterday, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is missing from the long-rumoured (and otherwise tasty-looking) Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection. Not only that, but it was also omitted the montage of significant Mario releases that appeared in the final few minutes of the Super Mario 35th Anniversary Direct broadcast.
The internet, predictably, wasn't impressed, with thousands taking to social media to voice their confusion at Galaxy 2's exclusion. The game is a favourite at Nintendo Life Towers; we waxed lyrical on its ten-year anniversary and it was one of our Staff Picks for Game of the (previous) Decade. Indeed, Nintendo Life readers voted it into the top 10 of their Game of the Decade picks.
So, while we're certainly not grabbing our pitchforks and preparing to march (with masks, of course) on Nintendo HQ, it still begs the questions: Why is it missing from Super Mario 3D All-Stars and why did Nintendo not mention the game at all in its historical roundup at the end of the Direct broadcast?
We present some theories as to why Super Mario Galaxy 2 is missing from Super Mario 3D All-Stars, for your consideration...
Theory #1: Nintendo just forgot about it
With so many Mario games over the past thirty-five years, it's hard to keep track of them all, right? The team that assembled the Direct must have just forgotten about it! They jumped on the Wii bandwagon when it released but had drifted away by 2010 - that Xbox 360 had some real winners, no?
Yes, it did, but no - of course Nintendo didn't just 'forget' Galaxy 2. The Japanese Mario 35th Anniversary account included it in a rather lovely lineup photo. Whether it was excluded in some (misguided, considering the internet's memory) attempt to not highlight its omission from 3D All-Stars, or for some other reason entirely, it definitely wasn't a simple clerical error.
Likelihood: 0/10
Theory #2: Nintendo wanted to keep the 'Medley' montage trim
The nostalgic 'Medley' at the end of the broadcast also omitted several other mainline Mario games, including New Super Mario Bros. 2, The Lost Levels (the 'proper' Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan) and Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. On that evidence, perhaps the team passed over anything with a '2' in the title (or anything that rhymes with '2', eh New Super Mario Bros. U?).
Obviously, many of us gamers are completionists who want everything included at all times - if something's not mentioned, then somebody made a mistake! Something that seems like an oversight or an intentional snub was likely omitted just to keep the montage lean.
Likelihood: 7/10 (although it's not much of a reason why it's missing from 3D All-Stars...)
Theory #3: It was left out of 3D All-Stars to save cartridge space
According to the Super Mario 3D All-Stars' game page on Nintendo's UK site, the game download weighs in at cool 4.871 GB. As the most modern game in the collection, it would be fair to assume that Super Mario Galaxy takes up the most space, so perhaps adding Galaxy 2 would have increased the overall file size enough for the collection to require a larger (and more expensive) cartridge for the physical release. Sounds possible, no?
Well, it's tough to say without knowing exact file sizes for each game in the collection, but it seems unlikely. Switch carts exist in a range of sizes, including 4 GB and 8 GB, but at this point in the Switch's life the cost difference to the platform holder would be negligible. Assuming that 3D All-Stars is coming on an 8GB cartridge, one would also guess that Galaxy 2 could have squeezed in that extra space.
Yes, everyone's looking to pull their belts in this year, but Nintendo's doing all right and we don't see this being a likely reason why Galaxy 2 would be AWOL.
Likelihood: 2/10
Theory #4: Galaxy 2 is the victim of internal politics at Nintendo
Perhaps there's some sort of squabble going on within the development teams! Perhaps the staff behind Galaxy 2 have been disowned by Shigeru Miyamoto as Mario's creator and Galaxy 2 director Koichi Hayashida engage in a feud that's splitting Nintendo EPD in two, with poor Yoshiaki Koizumi caught in the middle! Perhaps it's all going down behind the scenes at Nintendo HQ!...
Er, no. Even if there were some internal dispute (there isn't), Galaxy 2 is an acclaimed company product with the potential to generate cold hard cash.
Likelihood: 0.15/10
Theory #5: It's all part of a cunning plan...
The limited-time availability of the game--in both physical and digital formats, remember--is puzzling. The March 31st 2021 deadline to buy the game happens to coincide with the end of the financial year, and this approach will encourage anyone sitting on the fence to buy the game regardless, while also ensuring everyone pays full price for it - this one won't be part of any summer sales! Consumers are smarting from the economic events of 2020 and this Holiday season is going to be fiercely competitive between companies vying for your cash. With competition from a new generation of consoles, Nintendo wants to tie in as many people as possible for stocking fillers this year, and this limited-time tactic is one way to do that.
So, as a ploy to bolster Nintendo’s 2020 financials, it's certainly cunning. We’ve seen this limited-time release strategy recently with tiny digital (and free) game Jump Rope Challenge, but a full-fat first-party physical release is a totally different ball game. That Nintendo would prevent people who buy a Switch after 31st March 2021 from paying money for these games is unimaginable, though. We'd wager that the plan is to set them all separately—for, say, $15-20 each–from April 2021 onwards, and that Galaxy 2 will be magically added to the eShop lineup to soften the blow for everyone who jumped on the collection for fear of missing out.
Likelihood: 8.5/10
Theory #6: The Galaxy 2 remaster wasn't ready in time
Galaxy 2 was supposed to be included, but the ol' global pandemic meant it couldn't be finished on schedule and had to be cut out. No, these remasters don't require the same resources as building a game from the ground up, but that doesn't mean they're easy or quick to pump out while working from home. Perhaps it simply wasn't ready in time.
Likelihood: 7/10
Theory #7: It'll come later as a free download
Oof, now we're getting into wishful thinking territory. The idea that Galaxy 2 will come as a free download at a later date for anyone who purchased 3D All-Stars is tantalising, but unlikely.
Let's put it this way: if you were in charge of Nintendo's bottom line and someone suggested releasing one of the company's most critically acclaimed games as a 'free' add-on to a collection that's already sold millions of copies, what would you say? Something like "On your bike, son! They'll pay for it and they'll like it!", probably.
Likelihood: 3.5/10
Theory #8: It's a marketing strategy to keep fans talking about it
Let's imagine two hypothetical scenarios, both conducted over a Zoom call with your pal.
Firstly, Nintendo releases 3D All-Stars with Galaxy 2 included:
"So, did you play 3D All-Stars yet?"
"Yep! Oh man, it's totes amazeballs. You?"
"Oh yus. Great collection. When's Breath of the Wild 2 coming again?"
Now the same scenario sans Galaxy 2:
"So, did you play 3D All-Stars yet?"
"Yep! It's good, but where's Galaxy 2, man?!"
"I know, right? I wonder if it's coming? I've been reading theories about why it wasn't included. Seems like a no-brainer. It's got to be coming, right?"
"I hope so! It's up there with the first game for me - maybe even better. I can't believe it's not included. The rumours said it would be, didn't they?"
"I think so? Argh, it feels kinda incomplete without it. I really hope..."
*Conversation continues for months
The fact is, Galaxy 2's exclusion generates long-tail chatter about the game that it wouldn't otherwise have: we're writing about it; you're reading about it. For all its oddball choices Nintendo generally knows what it's doing when it comes to generating buzz - and certainly making money. In a period when the company's release timetable has been disrupted, this and the game's limited-time availability will certainly keep it in the conversation. Clever girl.
Likelihood: 7/10
There are just a few theories - some less serious than others. What do you think, though? Let us know which one rings truest to you, and feel free to suggest your own in the comments below.

First Galaxy is superior.
I'm going with my theory that the Switch Pro will launch in 2021 and being able to play Wii games (via eshop purchase) will be one of its main selling points.
That explains the limited time purchase for this AND why they left Galaxy 2 off. They want to be able to use them both as a selling point for the upgraded console next year.
It’s just annoying that it’s missing on the collection. There is almost no reason to not do that.
Well it’s not for any altruistic reasons anyway. They’ll release it paid as they love a good port so it’ll be £30 at the minimum imo. It’s not that old.
I love Galaxy 2, but idk if I would categorize it as essential in the 3d series of you have the first one there. I honestly think the first one is waaaay better and more exciting than 2. That said, it is weird how it was excluded from everything in this presentation
My theory is that it’ll unlock upon completion of the other three. In the direct they had them lined up on a screen at one point. The far right looked like a 4th slot.
@Snakesglowcaps I was just about to post the same thing! It might be hidden somewhere!
How about Theory #9: SMG 1 already had a HD port which was adapted to traditional controllers.
The sequel never had that treatment, so it would have been more work. But I prefer the original anyway.
I’ve got a theory! Nintendo wants to see how greedy we’ll be... asking for friggin Galaxy 2.... Heathens!
It'll be DLC at twice the price of the original game because now you can play as Nabbit... Oh and coins, lots and lots of coins.
Theory #9: 3D All-Stars vol.2 coming later, including 3D Land and 64DS.
Galaxy 1 had a superior "story" but Galaxy 2 was the superior 3D platforming game by a smidgen. I think the factorial likelihoods that you have rated 7/10 or above are working in combination here with this issue. It's not just one factor, but probably 2 or 3 IMO.
@BrintaPap its 3d ALL STARS not 3d most stars haha totally agree. Oh and making these remakes took next to zero effort on their part this is not covid related they just decided to exclude it for some reason
they know galaxy 2 is the best game out of that collection, they'll remaster it separately and put a 60 dollar price tag on it
Theory 5 is the key.
Galaxy 2 was clearly the better Galaxy game. I got mad when they they showed New Super Mario Wii but not this fantastic game.
@Snakesglowcaps It'd be pretty poor marketing to advertise the collection as worse than it actually is.
Good article covering a lot of different theories. 1 of them might even be correct. But who knows it's Nintendo, maybe they lost the ROM. 🤣
#BreakFreeMarioGalaxy2 lol
I'm part of the minority that is unable to appreciate Mario Galaxy 2.
Feels too fragmented and pointless for me.
And funnily enough, the two other games to go completely unmentioned, NSMB2 and SML2, are some of the only games I never actually got to play.
Its basically a spinoff with the ideas they had left over from the first game and isn'tas cohesive an experience. Great game for sure but its not a big deal for me that its absent.
So many people complaining when we're getting 3 of the greatest 3d platform games ever made
What about......once you complete Mario Galaxy, it unlocks Galaxy 2.
To be fair I loved Galaxy, but 2 lacked something for me.
I think theory 5 (standalone releases though I'd guess $20 for 64, $30 for Sunshine, $40 for Galaxy and $40 for Galaxy 2) or a theory 9 not listed (Galaxy 1 is only included because of the Nvidia Shield Wii ports and as Galaxy 2 didn't come to the Nvidia Shield, Nintendo just skipped it).
Theory 5 is probably the most legit one, theory 7 made me laugh out loud.
Probably keeping it for a future reveal or in-between big new game releases. After all, unless Nintendo has Odyssey 2 in the works, they need another Mario for 2022 or when the Switch Pro launches.
@BrintaPap except one of the reasons listed above or a multitude of other reasons. You may not like it but you have to assume there is a plan somewhere
Paid DLC, 1000% sure of my prediction
galaxy 2? i never heard of a mario galaxy 2. yall must be crazy
I'm going to say it's a combination of running out of time and internal politics. The Rona probably has the most to do with it, but Nintendo always sets the value of their franchises very high. It could be that internally Nintendo thought that including SMG2 would push the MSRP above the $59.99 threshold based on the value of the Mario games included in the package, so SMG2 was left out. It would be very Nintendo if that's the case.
Either way, there's a lot of Mario in that package already. There's tens of hours to fully complete each of those games (even if someone has done it recently, moreso if they haven't since the games were new). There's lots of content here already. I'll be very happy with this pack.
I would have preferred SM64/Galaxy/Galaxy 2 and I think those games are more fitting for the collection... Sunshine HD should have been the separate release in my opinion. Sunshine could benefit from a complete re-make to fix problems and boring spots.
Oh well... I will be buying it for SM64 and Galaxy... I actually bought Galaxy 1 & 2 together for the Wii and went straight to 2... I started 1, but never got very far and then got busy with other stuff. So I am looking forward to re-starting Galaxy on the Switch.
The inclusion of Galaxy 2 would make the collection less balanced. And since this is a limited release, it's not really intended to be a "complete collection". Combine this with theory 5 and it makes a lot of sense.
@Decapre I kind of just think of them as one thing; Galaxy 2 is like an elaborate expansion pack, but played back to back, the two of them make up the very best Mario experience ever. And that’s saying something
We assumed Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii would've been replaced with Prime 1 and 2 being sold individually, but for North America, that REALLY didn't happen.
@Dezzy I disagree with that theory, simply because the Wii U was able to play Wii games, and with this new Galaxy port coming out, there’s no reason the Switch shouldn’t be able to either. This isn’t like the 3DS where the original edition was supposedly unable to play SNES games, but a revised version was capable, and I don’t believe that the option to buy Wii games would be enough of a reason to convince the vast majority of people to buy a Switch Pro. Surely they’d rather make that selection available to everyone that owns a Switch, regardless of version?
How ‘bout THIS theory:
The next mainline Mario game will be Galaxy 3, and they are saving Galaxy 2 for the inevitable Galaxy trilogy as a swan song for Switch Pro.
The trilogy will be called: Super Mario Galaxy Universe (because Nintendo likes stupid names)
@BenAV worse than it actually is? 3 amazing ports and tons of content? Maybe Nintendo just wanted to verify we’re all a bunch of whiny bitches who will complain about anything before revealing its Unlockable...?
Theory number 8 I reckon. Get fans talking about it and craving it and sell it to them later down the line. It makes it feel special... It's omission makes people who haven't played it curious and want it on Switch more, especially with people hyping up how amazing it was. Nintendo's using some psychological wizardry on their fans of late!
Don’t forget that next year is the 35th anniversary of Legend of Zelda, so all these theories about MORE Mario releases are maybe misguided considering what will no doubt be a Zelda-centric year.
@gaga64 No 64 DS, just Galaxy 2 and 3D Land. Will cost full price, nevertheless.
??I thought it was quite obvious. Nintendo featured Mario Land 1 but did not feature Super Mario Land 2. They featured New! Super Mario Bros. but not New! Super Mario Bros. 2. Ergo, they featured Mario Galaxy 1 but not 2. They are obviously not focusing on direct sequels; but originals instead.
@Crockin this is it, really. If you are doing an 'All-Stars' trilogy, G2 doesn't really have a place. Each of these games is groundbreaking in their own way, G2 is more of Galaxy but not as good. Equally, I wouldn't expect SM64 2 or Sunshine 2 to be in this collection (if they existed that is)
Wait a minute there was a Galaxy 2?
I really just don't know. I don't have a gut instinct towards any of these ideas or any others.
At this stage it does just feel a bit saddening that it's apparently not included in the collection. I don't want DLC, paid or otherwise, I just want a fab collection on the cartridge.
@Markiemania95
The Wii U was backwards compatible from day 1 because it had the same CPU type as the Wii. Completely different from the Switch. The Switch would either have to emulate or port Wii games.
It's definitely possible that a slightly faster CPU is needed for proper emulation.
Theory #7: It'll come later as a free download
This is the fairest theory but I think that Nintendo wants to release the games separately after March, including Super Mario Galaxy 2. The problem is that Super Mario 3D All-Stars will still be incomplete.
One potential theory I thought of, was that even internally at Nintendo's, Galaxy and Galaxy 2 kind of 'blend in' together too much. So as to not make the box-art too much 'Galaxy' themed, they only kept the first game. And maybe the second is an unlockable game or something, akin to how Star Fox 2 was unlockable on the SNES Mini.
Not a very likely theory, but a theory nontheless.
I get it people always want more bang for their buck but come on. We had months of speculating and its finally here! Just be happy, its 3 games that in my opinion rock.
Can't please them all!
Are we missing the fact that thanks to the leakers we already knew Galaxy 2 wouldn't be included?
Why are people acting shocked when we knew literally every minute detail about this collection for months?
The leakers informed us:
Literally every detail leaked turned out to be true...
"So, while we're certainly not grabbing our pitchforks and preparing to march (with masks, of course) on Nintendo HQ,"
I'm almost ready!
@Gwynbleidd Im just gonna highlight the true answer:
Theory #9 it's gonna be 60 bucks more alone
In 5 years they will re-release on the "Switch Next" as Super Mario 3D All-Stars + Galaxy 2 lol
@Jokerwolf DELUXE
Nintendo always has something up their sleeves. Theory 5 is a close one, but I could bet we'll see Super Mario Galaxy 2 Deluxe as a game alongside the Switch Pro next year. (Next fiscal year)
Most likely scenario I can think of: 3d all-stars is a blockbuster>leaves the market in march 2021>comes back to market in mid-late 2021 w/galaxy 2 dlc
@Yosher Yeah, it should be an unlockable or a free download. We can't be sure that it isn't.
My guess is #6, wasn't ready in time.
@Snakesglowcaps Huh? I'm saying that if the collection did indeed include Galaxy 2 then advertising it without would be selling it way short. I can't see Nintendo doing that. They usually reveal about as much as they can prior to a game's launch.
@Dezzy Love the sound of the Wii download feature for Pro.
Still buying but disappointed that Galaxy 2 hasn't been included. When personally I think its the best 3D Mario game to date. Hopefully it will come along eventually, luckily I still have both on the Wii.
MG and MG2 in my humble opinion are two best Mario games ever. Magical, clever, extremely diverse, with a very good time-management strategy, fantastic controls and perfect proportion of nostalgia and innovation. They never felt as claustrophobic or hollow as Odyssey. Not sorry about that.
Just a heads up: the link in the first paragraph of the article should read "35th anniversary," not "25th anniversary."
Someone else and I mentioned this in another comment thread but having played Galaxy 2 recently I feel like the pointer control aspects were more deeply integrated into the gameplay than with Galaxy 1. What I mean is that you had to manipulate the pointer and press the B trigger with Yoshi while also being able to quickly move and jump. I think that would be difficult in handheld mode on the switch. I think with Galaxy one the pointer usage was more optional and when it was not optional it was in more separate pointer centric sections.
I have not played Galaxy 1 recently though, so maybe it uses the pointer more than I remember from over 10 years ago when I first played through it the whole way.
Whelp, that settles it. Nintendo really are businessmen
As someone already said in the comments, they had already made a HD remaster of Galaxy 1 for the Nvidia Shield in China with altered controls. So it was basically already made, they were too lazy/penny pinching to port the sequel as they could get away with just the first game in the collection.
@dartmonkey "We'd wager that the plan is to set them all separately—for, say, $15-20 each–from April 2021 onwards, and that Galaxy 2 will be magically added to the eShop lineup to soften the blow for everyone who jumped on the collection for fear of missing out."
With this, you may have salvaged my faith in Nintendo somewhat. It was very shaken by the whole time limited nonsense.
to be honest, i have no ***** idea why they ignored Galaxy 2... there is no reason, literally no technical or business reason..... it is just that they are Japanese which sometimes means to be weird
@BlackenedHalo While I love the first game, 2 is arguably much better as well so the absence seems even more strange.
The price of the game would most likely be above the MSRP of $59.99 if Galaxy 2 was added.
Look at it this way, the collection as is is already a steal as Galaxy is worth more than essentially $20.
And probably why the collection is a limited release as Nintendo isn't going to keep undercutting themselves when dealing with one of their premiere franchises.
I think it might be unlockable when you complete Galaxy 1 (or similar to Starfox 2 on the snes mini, unlocks after playing 1st level)
Although I really like Galaxy 2, I was not a fan of the “new super Mario bros” style level layout. I much prefer hub type areas
@Friscobay
I agree, Odyssey is overrated and not that inspired, but it's still better than 90% of it's competition.
Never played the first Galaxy, but I love Galaxy 2. Started it back in 2010 when I first got the Wii and it took until 2020 quarantine with some "help" from my youngest daughter to finally beat the game. The Yoshi chili pepper levels and the fireball box challenges were the biggest obstacles.
@BenAV I’d say it either slipped off due to COVID or its hidden in there somewhere. They’re going all out for the plumbers birthday. To me it’d make more sense to hide it in the game. You’ve already got a great pack with the three games and you know it’ll sell. No ones saying, no galaxy 2 no buy, ya know what I mean. Just a nice little treat for those who beat them all.
@gaga64 I could definitely see a second volume. I won’t get my hopes up, but it would include some Paper Mario games in my dream version
I was more into Playstation when Sunshine came out and then living in Japan when Galaxy did but ironically wasn't playing games at the time as I was there for missionary work. So I missed both of these. Lots of new value for me in this package!
will be 60 euro remaster
It will come as its own remaster, then Galaxy 3 or the next Mario will come out.
I love SMG2, but I like the first one better. My guess is they'll either include it in a vol. 2 with a remastered 3D Land and 64 DS (wishful thinking), they'll sell it separately later on, or maybe they're considering an upgraded NSO with N64, GameCube, and Wii titles and they're saving SMG2 for that. For now, I'll just have to go to my Wii U when I want to play it.
@nessisonett Honestly, the theory that they might release every "Collection" titles digitally after the deadline is a strong possibility, especially if the Collection does well in the first place. And re: Galazy 2 released separately afterward would similarly fit.
This said it could be that the deadline is just that. A deadline.
There's been a ton of previous "Anniversary/Celebration" collections that had very limited run like Zelda Master Quest collection or Metroid Prime Trilogy(until the WiiU eshop port, that is), so in that regard the deadline might be unique only in that this is the first celebration-collection title to be first released(rather than re-released like MP:Trilogy) in the era of an actual eshop capable of supporting full fiat titles(unlike the Wii's original Wiistore).
Also it seems impossible to please people.
Personally I'm more than happy with the 3 games on one cart.
Will be double dipping for all of them.
Paid DLC for 3D All Stars owners, post March 21 released as a Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 collection.
Is it weird that I was much more bothered with the omission of Super Marion Land 2 from the sizzle reel than Galaxy 2 from the collection? Like, they couldn't show 5-10 seconds of gameplay for what reason exactly?
@Mmzom33 I expect the 35th anniversary stuff to be mostly all we've seen, but similarly I wouldn't be extremely surprised if a later full fiat Direct(let's be honest, at 15min in length what we got was just another mini-Direct) included it's own 35th Mario Anniversary segment with more announcements.
Of course, in the year(s) of COVID, I have no idea when next to expect a full fiat Direct. To be honest, I half wonder if COVID is partly why all Directs have been minis this year, making me wonder if there's some organizational issues that are hindering the production of Directs longer than the 15min minis we're getting.
Lots of the recent indide/3rd parties showcases/yesterday's 35th anniversary are the kind of stuff that could have been bundled as part of a single Direct in the past? On one hand, this make me ponder about future "full" Direct but on the other in recent months it -has- been a fair amount of these minis even if people still call for the "full" thing.
My guess is both Galaxy games were intended to be released bundled together with 64 and Sunshine as separate eShop downloads. But due to Covid, Galaxy 2 was not ready. So 64, Sunshine and Galaxy were bundled together with Galaxy 2 coming as a separate thing further down the line.
@Dezzy @JuiceMan_V Totally agree with both of you. For this collection, they have to emulate the N64, the GC, and the Wii. Including Galaxy 2 would probably push the price to $80, and they don’t want to sell a collection at that price point.
It was a complete remaster, but Link’s Awakening is also $60 and it is only a single GB/GBC title (I bought mine used for $45).
Nobody has played 3D All Stars yet, but at the moment, it appears to be a great collection.
Remember on Mario's 25th when they took the small rom size of an SNES game (All-Stars) and sold it on a Wii disc without making any tweaks or upgrades to the release?
At least they're beating that
While I'd obviously hope for number seven, I think they're remaking it, or plan to release a "Galaxy collection" once the 3D all-stars are gone for good. Because the all-star collection needed more than 64 and Sunshine, and Galaxy 2 alone won't sell as well as a collection.
Maybe they'll do both? Free update for those who celebrated the 35th anniversary by giving Nintendo money, and a Galaxy collection up for purchase later on. What they definitely should NOT do, is sell it twice to the people who want all the home console 3D Mario's on the Switch. DEFINITELY NOT.
I think they're just trolling.
If they included Galaxy 2 but left out another game people would be complaining about that and saying it was their favourite/the best Mario ever.
Lazynes/greedynes. Remember that there's also a Mario allstars (the one with the 2d games) that contains Mario world. But we didn't get that version when the last anniversary was around...
@Snakesglowcaps For me it's a pretty decisive factor on my interest in the collection. I don't feel any need to play 64 or Sunshine again but I'd be interested in being able to play the Galaxy games handheld. Full retail price just so I can play the first game is a pretty hard sell but if it had both I'd be 100% down. If they don't want to include it then whatever, I don't desperately need it or anything. Including it but hiding its existence would make no sense.
Super Mario galexy will be released 1 of april and we will.be abel to buy it for another 6 months.
And maybe they add some extras lets say a remasted versions of Mario Land series ? As remasterd versions is quiet Easy money for Nintendo:)
A lot of Mario sequels were left out of the ending montage.
Galaxy 2 was never going to be in the Collection, there is also no chance in hell it will be a free DLC or even paid DLC.
The Collection's run ends March next year. At that point the standalone games will be made available for purchase (maybe Mario 64 goes to N64 online) and Mario Galaxy 2 will be made available as a standalone purchase alongside them. Maybe not right away but it will join the eshop in time.
Simples.
Galaxy 2 will most likely get sold as a standalone game alongside 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy 1 in the eShop once 3D All-Stars is discontinued.
Mario All-Stars later being revamped on the SNES to include Mario World shows that Ninty isn't above tinkering with the products for a later rerelease or console bundles, too, so there's that.
Sorry if somebody said this, but 2D allstars came out in two forms. The second time it came with Super Mario World. I doubt 3D Allstars would come out later with Mario Oddessy, but later with SMG2? It's possible.
@Slowdive you don't need to guess. Go ask nate the hate
Nintendo and the magic number 3,
just one game for N64, NGC & Wii.
Set and done!
All buy 1,
and a remaster it may be.
It's part of their plan to release more Mario 3D All stars with the other games. Probably 3 per.
I think this is more of an experiment from Nintendo. All of us here are pretty hardcore fans and will buy the game pretty much regardless, but the Switch has reached a huge range of people that might not have nostalgia for these games. Specially Sunshine, which was released in what turned out to be a very niche console.
And on the other hand, Nintendo is very specific about the direction they take with their franchises, going back just for nostalgia and fast money making could go against corporate values.
Hold on to your butts.
I'm calling it, Apr 1 2021, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D World & (a surprise inclusion) Super Mario Odyssey 2 triple pack. It'll be called Super Mario 3D All Star Sequels.
You forgot one theory: Nintendo knows the game didn't sell well (obviously) and so they thought nobody would care.
@Dezzy switch pro isnt happening man take those rumors as a grain of salt and besides the next model coming out next year is just basically going to have some improvements in certain area but not in spec wise.
It's been so long since I played it that I don't remember much about either
It would have made sense to package Mario 64 with Sunshine and a separate package for Galaxy 1 and 2.
They haven't. They are remastering it and keeping it for the Switch Pro.
Nintendo's game production slows when a new console is on the horizon. This year's limited games release does suggest a new console. Game releases slow because Nintendo are working on games for the new console.
That does suggest a more powerful Switch or some other device. If this is not the case and I was a shareholder, I would be concerned.
Spawnwave made a good theory regarding it. He said they may be treating Galaxy 2 like a Wii U port and giving it the deluxe treatment and then releasing it as a separate game. It could be plausible.
There's a part of me hoping that it's actually included and they didn't say anything about it, and that you unlock it by finishing Super Mario Galaxy 1, that way it gets a bunch of attention when the first people discover it. But probably not.
@RiasGremory
It's not happening, but you also know whats in it? That makes no sense.
It's definitely Nintendo just overvaluing their games.
It was $9.99 on Wii U, and that was five years ago. If you want to buy the game now it's $19.99, surely an HD/reworked version is worth more than that.
#9 it is a licensing issue with their Chinese release. To prevent competing with their customer.
Well, at least the Wii version still can be bought from Ebay.
I saw a lot of pre-owned Super Mario Galaxy 2 from Ebay.
Buy the Wii version and it saves the day.
It's on Wii U in an upscaled version you can output hdmi for. That counts doesn't it?
I mean someone who wants all the 3d mario games needs to own a 3ds as well.
I think it's a marketing stunt. Just like how I do not think #pokemonmastersex was a mistake. I think it was fully planned.
So next year Zelda OoT, Windwaker, Twilight princess remasters?
@Dezzy "I'm going with my theory that the Switch Pro will launch in 2021 and being able to play Wii games (via eshop purchase) will be one of its main selling points."
And the Nintendo Switch Pro will also make perfectly delicious Eggos! Sounds like a win win.
Here's something a lot of people might have missed since they are focused on Super Mario Galaxy 2 not being in the montage.
That was the fact that Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins was left out of the montage as well. Super Mario Land 2 is one of the most important games ever made and should have been between Super Mario World and Super Mario 64, but it was missing.
We have already gotten remakes of Samus Returns, Pokemon Yellow, and Link's Awakening on the 3DS and Switch. Super Mario Land 2 remains the only big Game Boy game left not to get a remake.
Could Nintendo have a full remake lined up for Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins? Why would they leave that game out while highlighting Super Mario Land 1?
The obvious answer is the usual one: ¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥
Nintendo will ultimately release the all-stars games as separate £25 downloads come March and MG2 will probably be available then.
Another theory: It’s on there as an unlockable secret after you beat Galaxy 1. Everyone’s mad for nothing.
You have all forgotten one thing: Bowser.
@SirKif The old Star fox 2 approach, that would be something.
@Tandy255
I don't think they're all being emulated. They've changed the in-game aspect ratio for Sunshine. That's not possible with emulation. That means they've ported the original game code most likely.
Most likely dlc I think, makes the most sense out of something that doesn't make sense.
I’m just grateful we get get three tip top quality Mario games for 50 pounds xxx I’m going to play about 10 minutes of each to dip my toes in the water, I’m so curious how galaxy feels on my switch lite xxx yeah I think they will then be broken and sold individually. The idea that after March u can’t buy digitally has to be a bit crazy right x
Switch Pro with Mario 3d All stars included
I'm guessing it will be paid DLC later. Not optimal, but I'm hoping for it. I'm assuming they just wanted to keep it trim and streamlined. I never played 2 as much as 1 but loved it. Tbh though I did like the hub in 1. It was cool.
or..... it's just Galaxy (1+2) in the All Stars
Theory.
Galaxy 2 is just so good it deserved its name on a game cover on its own and not a collection.
Galaxy 2 is everything galaxy and more maybe 5 time more
My theory is that they are making it a limited release because they are like “oh buy our consoles this year too play these three classic games.” But then later down the line they would resell the game, with dlc for galaxy 2. And too all the people saying they are waiting too put it on a switch pro, if galaxy 1 can run on the switch out right now, than why would they need a new switch for other games? And also why would they make a new switch when Nintendo has learned they can’t combat the console wars.
Just pre-ordered at Base.com for £45. I still have my original copies of all these games but having them all in one place is the selling point. Would have wanted Galaxy 2 there as well but it would be nice to have it at some point in the near future. I preferred the hub world of the first game personally. Galaxy 1 is still my favorite Mario game
Maybe it is an unlockable after finishing all three games
@BenAV
Nintendo doesn't need good marketing at this point, I feel like lol. I mean, they know that everyone will buy these now because "HEY LOOK, IT'S MARIO 64!"
I wouldn't be surprised if it was planned as a free DLC (or half priced) for members who own the 3D All-Stars collection and as a standalone Virtual Console purchase for everyone else who missed out on the 3D All-stars collection.
I can already see it on the March Direct...
"As a thank you for purchasing the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection, we have a special surprise for you, take a look!
<plays SMG2 game trailer>
That's right, Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be added as a DLC expansion... for FREE! If you missed out on getting this time-limited collection, you will still be able to purchase all 4 games separately on the Nintendo eShop. The free Super Mario Galaxy 2 DLC expansion, and all 4 Super Mario games will be available for purchase on the Nintendo eShop... TODAY!"
And that is how I imagine the Direct would be.
@Ludovsky I don't think the dysfunction is purely COVID19 related. Some of it, is no doubt related to the "-=NEW=- Switch" or whatever that's pending (which was delayed by COVID if the rumors are true), but I think a lot of it is due to what Sony and MS are doing. Nintendo says they don't compete, but they do. Nintendo's only 3.5 years into their console, normally their console's prime time. But they're caught mid-gen with both competitors ramping up the new gen this year. Nintendo probably expected to lay low, then come out swinging to counter the new consoles, but Sony and MS, without E3, deviated from normal routines and we're sitting 9 weeks from their launch or so without a date, price, preorders, or even full specs or games. So while those two play cat and mouse, Nintendo has to continue laying low if they really have a strategy to counter new console hype until there's actually new console hype to counter.
I mean really, Xbox comes out with Halo-less XSeX, Sony comes out with impossible to buy new hardware and a PS4 DLC for Spiderman as its main exclusive, and Nintendo just drops MP4, SMT5, Pikmin4 and whatever....who would buy a Playstation?
My theory: Collection cost 60$, this means we are paying 20$ each game. Galaxy 2 is not included for this price or nintendo will see it like giving it away for free. If it was included they will like to charge 80$ for the collection and fans will not be happy with this price. it will come up later digitally only for 20$.
Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are the best 3D platforms of all time.
I put the second one, just a little high.
@NateWantsToTussle That's true. It's not like I'm suggesting that they should be putting a ton of resources into advertising though. Just that they should show what games are included on the box (which they have as there's no Galaxy 2).
@JuiceMan_V i thought I was alone. I don’t like Odyssey period. Something is very off about this game, it doesn’t feel grand at all. It is like an opposite of Galaxy series where every single tiny world felt infinite.
Galaxy 2 contained a non Miyamoto approved character and had to be erased from history.
Galaxy 3 will be released next year containing only Mario and an infinite amount of Toads.
@Dezzy I stand corrected. Thanks! Regardless, it takes work to get these three games running on the Switch.
It will be very interesting to see how Sunshine and Galaxy control. If detached joy-cons are required for Galaxy, then that would be a negative for Switch Lite owners. Still, it looks like a very promising collection.
It would jack up the price of 3D All Stars
Later as a FREE download?
No.
@Decapre No, it’s not. It’s inferior in every way but hub world design.
Theory #6 is the most likely. And Theory #7 - except not for free!
@Decapre some folks definitely like the first game better but I'm in the camp who had more fun playing Galaxy 2. It just went straight into the action right away and some new and interesting mechanic every other level. It felt like it always had something going on and I couldn't wait to see what was next. For me it was more exciting. I know that a lack of Galaxy 2 is definitely keeping me from any desire for the collection. Its the game I most want to replay so I'm gonna wait to see if they do sell it separate.
I think they just wanted to do one of the three different big games for this limited time edition. It wouldn't look right having Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy and then adding it's seqel into the mix.
Perhaps after this limited time ends, they would release Super Mario 64 and Sunshine together. Then bundle Galaxy and Galaxy 2 together.
@rushiosan I played through and 100% Galaxy 1 as both Mario and Luigi, I don't think I even got half way in Galaxy 2. I can't really remember much about 2 so I'm not saying it's a worse game but something obviously didn't compel me to finish it even once, perhaps I had just moved on to something else and it got me hooked enough to forget about Galaxy 2, I'm not sure.
We know the reason: Nintendo is cheap. 4 Super Mario Series games for regular price would be giving the farm away. Nintendo never gives the farm away, that’s why it’s a hundred years old and the richest in the land.
They’re going to add it to the Metroid prime trilogy! 😂
@Mogster you could say that about the Lost Levels/Japan Mario 2, yet they still included it for the west as more reason to get the collection
It'll be added later, the fan response was massive to it's exclusion and Nintendo like money. And if we get that, the Metroid Prime trilogy and the Zelda collection of all five main games prior to BOTW, I'll be a very happy camper indeed! Wishful thinking I know, but one can dream!
theory: Nintendo is saving Mario galaxy 2 for Mario 3d All stars 2. it will also include Mario 3d World and Odyssey. Will be released for the 50th Mario anniversary in 2035
@Dezzy or they'll just sell all components seperately for $20 each in March.
@Dezzy Wii games would make a lot of sense on the Switch. Either that or they're planning on remastering a lot more Wii games down the line.
Regardless, I just want to play Wii Sports on my Switch lol.
@Prapper
But they could do that without removing the collection. They could just do that as well.
They'll sell it in the next collection which will also have 3D Land and 3D World.
@Dezzy artificial scarcity creates a frenzy of sales instead of people waiting for the product to drop in price next year. It's a scummy but sound business strategy Nintendo is waking up to after scalpers on Nes/SNES mini and now switch systems started buying more and faster than ever before.
I think the limitation is to keep sales going over the holiday while Sony and Microsoft release there next Consoles. Then a year later we will see Metroid. 👍
@Moonlessky While I don't know if it's the best game out of the bunch since I've never played either one, I too think its exclusion means it'll be full priced like mario world. I wanted all 3 to be in a bundle together but I see it's definitely not happening.
I was expecting a poll with each of those theories for the community to vote on. Eh, I'll live. IMO the most plausible theories are that they either ran out of time, or they're holding it for a separate release or DLC.
I can see theory 6 and 7 being true. But if it were true, I would think that Nintendo would say, "due to covid-19 Galaxy 2 is not ready yet and instead of delaying they game we decided to release Galaxy 2 as free DLC this holiday season".
Since three old games for $60, is a little steep for many people but if it was four games that would probably convince more people to buy the collection.
I want Mario Galaxy 2 but I am more disturbed this collection is only available until March even on the digital storefront. Why would Nintendo do something like that, to make people buy this game in droves? To drive the prices and demand high? Terrible idea.
I doubt that Galaxy 2 will be unlockable. The game size is 4.8 GB. Galaxy 1 is 3.27 GB, Sunshine is 1.35 GB, The last 160MB is most likely the game menu, Emulation cores, and music, along side Mario 64 (Which is only 8 MB). If they did add Mario Galaxy 2, that would add 1.4 GB, making the file size 6.2 GB. So Theory 3 is 100% Busted.
@Dezzy That would make sense but at this point in the game, a Switch Pro would be too late. With next gen consoles coming this year, a Switch 2 would be needed if Nintendo wants to continue receiving ports. If Switch Pro was ever considered, it should’ve been out before now
This collection is exciting but they could’ve done a lot better. Crash and Spyro got full trilogy remasters from the ground up for current gen and were only $40. But Nintendo just ports the 3 Mario games to Switch with minimal touches and then charges $60 just because they know people have been talking about the collection all year and will pay it.
@JackIsBack00
No reason Nintendo should really care about what the other platforms are doing at this point. They're doing good enough on their own. It's 4 years into the generation. They could easily extend it into being an 8 year long generation if they wanted with a Switch Pro.
@Grumblevolcano On the WiiU eshop NES games were $5, SNES/GBA games were $8, N64/DS games were $10, and Wii games were $20. Well I could see Nintendo selling their games individually like on the virtual console, I couldn't see them selling for that much more than what the virtual console prices were.
@BenAV
Yeah, I get what you mean.
I think it's a DLC, but not free. The logo with the 3 games side by side have space for one more in the right side. They use something like this (but free DLC) with Mario Maker 2, when it comes with a space for same thing they fill later (I don't remember exactly what is because I don't bother for this games)
I honestly always liked the first Galaxy more anyway. Got all 121 stars with both Mario and Luigi, but something about Galaxy 2 just didn't keep my interested and I didn't come close to "100%ing" that one.
It is coming with the launch of Switch Pro in glorious 4K!
@Pod glad someone mentioned the REAL elephant in the room, which was the omission of 6 Golden Coins in the montage
Admittedly this is wishful thinking also, like the free dlc idea, but maybe the are working on SMG3 and 2 will be downloadable to those who pre-order SMG3?
Apologies if someone said this already
@Crockin
Do not defend Nintendo.. this is just lazyness from their part
So, what happened to Mario 64 being widescreen? The PC port is quite nice, on the other hand.
Its included, when yoy finish all 3 game it will show up!
@Decapre One thing Galaxy 2 does MUCH better is the HUB.
The space ship is much less cumbersome than Rosaline's Space Station or whatever.
@Norwegianguy Don't be such a generic nintendo fan troll. I personally don't care that SMG2 isn't included. I would be happy also if it was there. If people beg day in day out, posting futurama take my money memes, simply for ports of these 3 games and then nintendo releases them....what injustice am i missing in this transaction? They are only available for a limited time, which is dumb. Other than that, they are supplying a demand.
Forget Galaxy 2, why isn't 3D Land in that collection?
@Crockin It wasn't weird that it was "excluded" from the presentation. Why would they show it? They didn't show any of the samey sequels or even some of the non-samey sequels. No New Super Mario Bros 2. or U or even the real Super Mario Bros. 2. They showed games that played differently. Footage of Galaxy 2 on a sizzle reel would have looked an awful lot like Galaxy and it would have appeared almost directly after it, making it needlessly longer.
That being said, while I personally like Galaxy 2, the reason you gave for it not being in the collection is basically the same as why it wasn't in the sizzle reel. They already have a game very similar to it that more people are familiar with. If there had been a Super Mario Sunshine 2 or 64 2, it probably would have been excluded as well.
This is what I told a friend at work yesterday and I still believe it.
Galaxy 2 will be a paid DLC add-on for anyone who owns 3D All-stars. I definitely agree with the theory that these games will become eShop downloads after March 31st (including Galaxy 2), but it makes sense that sometime before that they will announce Galaxy 2 as a paid DLC.
Prediction: $20 and announcement/availability about 1 week before black friday. Let's go with Nov 20th.
The wishful thinking I have is that it is a secret unlockable if you beat all three or just beating Mario Galaxy unlocks it. That would be shocking and amazing.
But I think the reality is probably they just didn't have it in time or didn't plan for it to be in the collection.
Honestly I'm not bothered I liked Galaxy 1 more (I 200% it) and I never bothered to finish Galaxy 2.
I'm more excited to finally play Sunshine. It's the only Mario game I haven't played.
@Deltath it's weird because it's a big high profile game, especially compared to the ones you mentioned. Fwiw the real smb2 is on the game and watch so they actually acknowledge that one.
Theory nymber 98972525: You unlock mario galaxy 2 when you complete galaxy 1!
@Specters You may be better off since you've played the games after it, but the fludd controls are not the best. It's a great game, but getting used to that was a bit of a lesson in tedium and patience. especially if you came over from mario 64.
Looking at the cover im guessing that its on its way
My take is that Galaxy was already ported a couple of years back for the nvidia chipset so it was a quick and easy port over to switch.
Galaxy 2 would be far more work.
Or it is unlocked after completing the three games.
It’s unlockable in Mario 64.
@Decapre @Crockin Super Mario Galaxy 2 is amazing. Super Mario Galaxy did it first but Super Mario Galaxy 2 perfected it and made a harder game as well.
@N00BiSH Good point! 3D Land is my fav.
I was hoping that would be included in with 3D World.
I've wondered if Galaxy 2 is unlock able game and Nintendo wants to keep it a surprise, like imagine this. You've played through those games and then Super Mario appears looking like he did in 1985 and he hits his head on a ? square and then each time he does this he changes like how he has done during the years. He hits the ? square one last time to reveal "You are Super player, here is a present from me to you. Super Mario Galaxy 2" it would be a lovely surprise. Also why did they show at one point GB Super Mario Land footage during the direct? something is going on with that....
@bobzbulder it's an amazing game! I personally just think the first one nailed the Galaxy concept and the story better. I'm also a sucker for a hub world in Galaxy 1. The feeling of firing it up for the first time is an all time amazing Nintendo moment for me.
@BenAV how doesn’t it make sense? Easter eggs are huge with Nintendo. They hid nes games in one of the animal crossings.
@stache13 Wii U era Nintendo was very generous because the system didn't do well. You had stuff like Nintendo Selects pretty early in the system's lifespan, free game promotions, upgrade price for VC games being heavily discounted, etc.
Meanwhile Switch era Nintendo has none of that because the system is a gigantic success. It's a reasonable prediction that N64 and Wii ports will be more expensive on Switch than they are on Wii U.
Galaxy 2 had the better level design. I know people like Rosalina's little story or whatever, but everything about 2 is tighter.
Nintendo not including it is just them being stubborn and thinking that they know what's best.
What happened to Mario Golf? That’s what I want to know. Why has that never been released on switch?!
@Friscobay Hands down the best level designs in the series, although Super Mario World comes really close
@Ratking The Gigaleak proves Nintendo doesn’t lose their things, they are freaks about archiving it all.
@sarethums Yeah looks like there’s more room, but we said the same thing with the ‘Styles’ UI in Mario Maker 2, and so far that never got filled in
@Zequio But the point of the space station / castle was to have you jump and run around beforehand, to get you ready for any level you enter. It’s actually a lot more accessible than Mario 64’s castle. Also they wanted to draw a sort of parallel to Peach
Am I wrong in saying it's only the physical game that has the limited release? I didn't hear them say the digital version of the game would end come 31st March. I thought the digital copy would be available into the next fiscal year.
My theory is that they're working on galaxy 3 and it'll be a direct sequel to the first game, setting it up to be more story based than galaxy 2. If this is the case they'd be excluding it from 3D All Stars to strengthen the momory of galaxy 1 so that galaxy 3 makes more sense. Galaxy 2 is pretty wierd as its almost a retelling of the first game (since it seems Mario and rosalína don't seem to know each other).
@Dezzy look at the recent model of switch that came out with minor improvements same will happen with the next one next year but switch pro not happening man.
It would be good if they make 3D mario allstars 2 ..
With Mario Galaxy 2 & 3D mario World 3ds and Super mario bros 3ds all in one package.
Be great if they did a zelda one as well with Ocarina of time, Majora's mask. And also all the Zelda gameboy advance games.
The gameboy advance had such amazing games it was like the snes on red bull with the amount of amazing titles.
@RiasGremory
They've had upgraded versions of several of their past consoles. No reason to think they won't do it here.
Having 3 games shown on the front cover, appears to create a more powerful impact. The trio composition layout of the box art is clean and seems more clearly defined. Whereas 4 games would probably make things more cluttered and confuse the marketing message. Just speculation on what Nintendo might be thinking internally. Perhaps the 3D wording of the collection just goes better with three titles shown. Another guess is that Super Mario Galaxy 2 might come as an extension DLC to the collection sometime next year. Or treated as a solid & standalone game title to be sold on Nintendo eShop in 2021, as a way to fill in development release gaps due to the pandemic. Who knows there might be bonus expansion DLC content associated with Galaxy 2 (which might not be ready yet), similar to what they are doing with Super Mario 3D World.
@Caryslan that very likely to happen, i can see Nintendo and maybe Grezzo doing a remake of Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins in the style of the remake of Legend of Zelda Link Awakening, as one of the big Holiday game of Switch for 2021, with Super Mario Odyssey 2 releasing in 2022.
Probably space limitations. That's my uneducated guess. I'm not fussed about it personally, since we've got SMG2 on the Wii. Has it became difficult to find or something?
I jut hope we get Galaxy 2 on Switch in some form. It is my 2nd favorite game of all time just behind XCDE. Plus, I havn't played it in years 'cause someone threw the disc on a brick fireplace and ruined it.
LOL at Theory #8, nice hindsight xD.
Well I'm sided with the fifth theory. I think I prefer that one to the sixth (think about it, if they couldn't finish SMG2, then what's going on with their unannounced Mario games...?)
Theory 7 sounds simple, but also unorthodox...
Keeping in mind that Lost Levels was on the original All Stars, and that collection had two Super Mario Bros. 2 games, the idea that Galaxy 2 wouldn't have been a good fit for 3D All Stars, additionally keeping it at an even 4 inline with the previous collection, looks completely absurd.
I don't even care. I get to play Sunshine on my switch now. SUNSHINE ON MY SWITCH!!!!! 😍😍
For me, the really odd thing is that it was missing from the montage. Choosing to focus on 3 games is fine, whatever... but cutting it from the montages... that seems like a retcon.
Here’s another hopeful one for the list:
theory #9: galaxy 2 doesn't matter lmao it's just a collection of levels. 1 had an actual story, a quest. 2 is just levels thrown together lmao can't WAIT for the collection!
Theory 9 : It will come as a standalone download title and will cost you 59.99
@Decapre how
It's going to come later as a stand-alone, HD remaster for $60.
@Pj1 nintendo has done that in the past you might be on to something....
beat galaxy and new game + becomes mario galaxy 2 like 3d land you unlock luigi
@Luna-Harmony no this was for the Mario 35th zelda is literally 5 months away. pointless to make another collection
@the_beaver theory 5 is stupid. zelda 35th is in 5 months no way there gonna shove more mario in 2021. thats zeldas year.....
One game chosen from each console seems the most likely.
@NintendoPok Exactly, that's why. They could release a Zelda Collection and stop selling this (or maybe just sell them separately in the eshop).
Let's see if they do a Metroid Collection as well... (ehem! Prime Trilogy ehem!)
Its either lazyness or they're going to resell it to us later at full price while fans eat it up.
Another theory:
Galaxy 2 is getting remade, not remastered. It was never intended to be in this collection and COVID did not affect its release schedule. The original lineup for Fall was the 3D collection, Pikman 3, 3D World+Bowser's Fury and BotW 2.
Mario Odyssey 2 is slated for 2022.
The 40th anniversary (2025) will see the release of the SM Galaxy Trilogy on both Switch and its successor console as a launch title, with Galaxy 1+2 getting updated visuals and a handful of gameplay updates (perhaps timed leaderboards for each level, the ability to ghost race your friends or play a series of levels designed for Mario 35-style battle-royale mode or a competitive boss-rush mode).
The 45th anniversary includes 45 new game and watch games developed gamejam style from various developers released on physical hardware that also plays all of the classic LCD games. The gamejam is livestreamed, and two Nintendo teams compete.
The 50th anniversary will bring out The Mario Collection 1 and 2, a time-limited release of all 3D marios through Odyssey on one SKU and all 2D marios through Mario Maker 2 on another, with options for live developer commentary in Japanese at the start of each level with English subtitles, and the ability to change the music to anything you want.
I don't have a theory, I just hope it shows up in the near future. SMG & SMG2 are both near perfect games. I couldn't choose one over the other. Where the original had all the new concepts and originality going for it, the second one added some new mechanics with Yoshi and turned things up and let the level designers really go wild. Even if it was really made up of ideas left on the editing room from the first game, it was a perfect sequel.
I tend to agree with the idea that Nintendo will then put them on sale individually. This will probably be the pint that galaxy 2 appears. My other theory ( which might be a possibility) is that the reason they are doing this is because they want to push digital / subscription service more and they will then move these games to the online service from next year
@Papichulo you forgot now you can play as...that one random frog kid from the Seven Stars RPG game!
This should’ve been a poll. #5 for sure.
Theory #9: It's a secret unlockable in 3D All-Stars that requires the completion of all three previous games.
All jokes aside, I am seriously doubtful that this "Switch Pro" would have anything to do with the release of any games, including Galaxy 2.
If anything, it could just be an elaborate leak that turns out to be yet ANOTHER re-release of the default Switch, with a smaller processor and better battery life. The last time there was a leak like this (back in 2019), we got the same thing; Switch revision, featuring better battery life and smaller processor.
In terms of how 2021 goes, I'm doubtful that a Zelda collection would come out, period. Assuming Nintendo completely ignores the opportunity to remaster/remake Skyward Sword, then yes it is possible for a collection, but that's also going under the assumption that they ignore the 3DS remasters of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask and just go with the N64 (or GC) version, because porting the 3DS versions requires some amount of reworking as the game was optimized to play for two screens.
My theory is that they didn’t want to put four games in the collection because the number 4 is a bad luck number.
I'm really not disappointed with super Mario galaxy 2 not being included, I've never played them before so being able to play the first one will be nice.
How can anything think smg1 is better then smg2? Smg1 is great in every way, except smg2 has Yoshi and more levels then 1.
I think Galaxy 2 will just get a beefed up deluxe + version at a later time, not unlike 3D world + Bowser Fury
Its obvious to see whats happening here, there is a reason Nintendo
are making the current games limited time, as next year probably to coincide with the switch pro, I think they will be releasing a "Switch online Gold" which costs 70-100 dollars a year.
for that money nintendo need to offer some serious games and I think Galaxy 2 will be part of the program
It will be released next year as a sequal release. Probably have Galaxy 2 New super Mario Bros and New super Mario Bros 2 included
@BenAV See, but a lot of people will be on the fence about whether the collection is worth 60 dollars. By conditioning people to think that 3 nostalgic games is alllmost worth 60 dollars, they would get so many more people on board to buy the collection once a surprise 4th game appeared. And so they'd get less initial sales, but more overall.
@gaga64 this is most likely (i hope anyway. I played galaxy 1, but sold galaxy 2 before i played it, so that's the only one i want to buy again).
@Tempestryke how does SMG2 being available on the Wii (since all of those are available on their original consoles) matter? SMG1 is on the Wii aslo.... The point is many people don't have a wii anymore, or just want to play them on the switch.
If Nintendo is working on Galaxy 3, there is a guess they are saving Galaxy 2 as a way to position and market later for a possible new sequel in the series. Certainly wouldn’t mind seeing another space themed Mario game, but with Bowser’s Koopalings in it this time. Perhaps thrown in giant mechas as bosses for them to operate, similar to their forms in Yoshi’s Safari.
@Ghostchip Totally zero effort! Just like there’s a magical “port to Switch” button that devs are totally too lazy to use...
@tobsesta99 sure its not zero effort but to be honest it was not even close to the amount of work as a new nintendo title. I am VERY happy with this product don't get me wrong. In fact, If galaxy 2 was in this bundle, it would be perfect in my books. But instead it just will be... incomplete
Maybe they'll release it in a year or two with a true remaster treatment on its own separate cart..?
No. 1 can you move the log in for comments at the TOP of the comment section so we do not have to scroll oast hundreds of comments to log in? This should be OBVIOUS.
No. 2...release Galaxy 2 as a "free download."
Is that a joke? It's Nintendo we're talking about here...the same company thta pushes the SAME game OVER...AND OVER...AND OVER...WITH LITTLE TO NO UPGRADE IN GRAPHICS OR GAMEPLAY. I sold my switch a few months back and I do not regret it. I have lost interest in Nintendo and their penny pinching anti consumer tactics...i'm gravy. You all enjoy!
@Gytole Oh no! Please come back buy a Switch again! Nintendo and their fans cant go on without you!
Seriously dude, what are you doing on this site then? Lol.
The first Galaxy was better because of Rosalina's story. Nevertheless, Galaxy 2 was very fun to play. I hope they add it as DLC for the collection.
@flightsaber
Why would Nintendo remake Galaxy 2, when the original would be pretty much flawless graphically just with a higher resolution?
@Decapre I can't disagree more
We're skipping the all stars due to No GALAXY 2 and we don't need MARIO 64 again.
It’s so obvious it’s going to be a DLC later next year... what’s the deal?
@Dragonslacker1 Yeah. About £17.00 per game is absolutely worth it for just the original games, but these will be HD.
@Dezzy That would be so annoying. There's no reason why Wii games can only be played on the Switch Pro except for the fact that Nintendo is being greedy and limiting the original Switch's potential features so that people go out and spend money on the Switch Pro.
Knowing Nintendo, you are probably right. :/
@NintendoFan990
CPU speed plays a huge part in emulation. It's entirely possible that the current Switch isn't quite fast enough to run it, but an upgraded version would be.
@Dezzy True, however the Wii U did a full Wii emulation, even with a home screen and everything. I would assume that the Switch would be capable as well. It depends on how differently the Switch operates compared to the Wii U, I guess.
WHERE THE HECK WAS SUPER MARIO WORLD 2: YOSHI'S ISLAND!?!?
@Grumblevolcano I think your theory is sound. We'll have to see if they announce a Skyward Sword port in the future.
@twztid13
I said I personally. Not you or anyone else personally. Reading comprehension is your friend.
My own guess was they are highlighting the "3" in 3D by having three games. I wouldn't be surprised by a galaxy bundle in the future having both together.
Of the theories here I think the time crunch one causing it to be cut out sounds most likely. I wouldn't be surprised if these were single releases as downloads in the future.
My guess is, is that to keep the packs games original, it'll come as $40-$60 (cad) DLC after the game is unavailable to purchase anymore.
Another theory: Nintendo is lazy and this is a quick cash grab.
If they do include it in April's eShop releases, hopefully the people who have purchased Super Mario 3D All Stars and therefore have a save file will get a discount on SMG2. Uncertain about that ro he fair.
Galaxy 2 will be sold separately either as a port or remake. Here is what is going to happen mark my words. Nintendo is doing this “limited time” shtick to make sure the game flies off the shelf. Once April comes they will sell each game individually, probably for $30 each. When it is ready SMG2 will be sold either for $30 as a digital only port or $60 as a remake (Retail and digital). Eventually the port prices will drop back down to $20. Then in 5-10 years they can release another collection with all of these games plus odyssey 1 and 2.
Maybe they’ll re-make it using the Odyssey engine as a stand alone release. And sell it for $79. Or *120 stars
I think it's an issue of branding. All-Stars conjures up images of the original which had 4 games, one of which was a similar sequel to another. To leave put the 3D equivalent, Galaxy 2, is odd.
I think if it were called something like 3D Collection, the omission would be a little less glaring.
My personal theory is that they wanted all three games to be different so having two games be in the same series would be a bit jarring. Another theory is that they didn’t want to sell four full games for a one game price
@Lovezelda pretty sure they just wanted to celebrate the anniversary by keeping the collection special lmao it’s not that deep
@WavedasherX “anything I don’t like is a cashgrab”
One word: RUSHED
How did it sell on Wii u? It’s already been rereleased and Nintendo fans own or owned Wii u. Mario Sunshine hasn’t been available since 2002, so guaranteed sale. I wouldn’t be spending money on re releasing something a second time if it didn’t sell well.
Galaxy 2 is what I’m actually play right now. Trying to beat it for the first time before the new year. Would love to see Nintendo acknowledge it at some point soon.
Theory 5 sounds the most likely, Nintendo will most likely release it at some point.
We all know nintendo wont be giving galaxy 2 out for free, but a man can dream.
Budget priced port in the new year?
Paid DLC to come.
They were so intent on 3 games for 3D all stars so they left it out. Can't have too much fun, that's a no no
I really hope Galaxy 2 does come to Switch at some point. I replayed it recently on Wii, and it's probably my favorite 3D Mario. The level design is just endlessly fun and replayable. I got the minimum amount of stars needed to beat the game so I could keep the majority of it fresh for if it does come to Switch.
Real answer:
It was out of scope
When Nintendo set the budget, release target and ambition, they worked out that in order to deliver the product within the scope that they could only fully deliver 3 ports.
Or they just didn't want to? 3 is the magic number and 3 games were what they gave us. 4 would look odd wouldn't it?
Or... Super mario galaxy 3 is on the way next year and 2 will be bundled with that?
Seems simple to me, they included three iconic 3-D Mario games from three systems the N64, Gamecube and Wii, there was probably no plan to include Galaxy 2 in the first place.
@TheFullAndy,
A very simple answer that makes sense, but many will just prefer the conspiracy theories more.
I would love to see Super Mario 3D All-Stars 2 !
With...
Mario Galaxy 2 - 3ds
Mario 3D Land - 3ds
New Super Mario Bros 1&2 - 3ds
hint hint lol
I keep getting advertisements on numerous pages. Could someone fix this
On another topic, there is an easter egg in the icons with Mario with a Luma (Galaxy 1) and Mario riding Yoshi (Galaxy 2). I'm pretty sure I thought this was pure coincidence, or is Nintendo actually hiding something? Nah, it's pure coincidence
I think nintendo has some problems and probably end up like sega...
