EA has already made it clear on several occasions that FIFA 19 on the Nintendo Switch won’t just be a quick rehash of the previous year’s iteration of the game. We know it will include enhanced graphics, the Champions League license and will also allow you to play against your friends online this time around.
During a chat with Game Reactor, FIFA’s lead gameplay producer, Samuel Rivera, placed emphasis on how new and improved AI would redefine the FIFA experience on Nintendo Switch:
The first one is, and most important, because a lot of our players play Switch against the AI, we wanted to completely redo that experience to something that is more fun. So we rewrote how we do AI in Switch and now they play more like humans, more like how I would play, 'I make my mind, I create, I need to do this' and then I go and execute it, not just reacting every single frame. So basically you feel like human and it's also a more tactical approach - they make their tactics and they try to score based on those tactics like real teams. So when you play against the AI in Switch it's just more fun and different.
The other feature being added to the Switch release is the timed finishing mechanic, previously limited to other versions of the game:
We also have it in Switch, and basically is the ability to make your shot more accurate and more powerful if you execute correctly a mechanic which is double-tapping the shoot button when the player is about to contact the ball. Then you will have a very good shot if you do it properly - if not, it's a very bad shot.
Rivera also said new shooting animations were being added to FIFA 19 on Switch and would be noticeable to players as soon as they started playing.
Will you be picking up FIFA 19 on the Switch? Do you like the sound of these improvements? Tell us below.

Nice to hear that EA is putting in the effort to make FIFA 19 better than FIFA 18! Looks like EA is continuing its previous level of support to the Switch by releasing an improved FIFA game, but it remains to be seen whether they decide to bring their other franchises to the Switch.
One soccer game a generation is enough for me. There's no amount of improvements in the world that would make me buy a second. Still I do hope it sells well to get other EA sports games although they're so dumb I doubt it even matters....
@shadow-wolf they won’t. Not anything you would want.
DO NOT support this, remember that they released the same FIFA game 3 times on VITA with just a roster update and each year they claimed they made upgrades to it. Which was a lie, Switch is looking to be no different.
I hold that sports games like FIFA, Madden, NBA2k and the like shouldn't receive yearly updates anymore, and shouldn't have for a long time. Updates should be in the form of free DLC(player roster updates and software patches) and paid DLC for new features or game modes.
It makes me glad I am not much of a sports fan, because I'd hate buying the same game every year with only minor changes at full price when technology has long moved past the need for that.
The only reason they get away with it like they do is because they have been doing it for decades now. Since the SNES/Mega Drive eras. But at that time, it made sense because there was no internet connection, no way to patch or update. On modern devices that is all standard.
Minor updates i would have an issue with. But if what this article is saying is true this is far from a minor upgrade. The fact i can play online against my friends now? That's a huge addition. The best part of these games is taking on your friends. Day one purchase. I've already pre-ordered.
@Heavyarms55 The real reason they get away with it is that a large portion of the people who buy their sports games only ever buy a handful of games in a year and don't know any better. Among these same people are the ones who they extract the most money out of through microtransactions.
EA's entire niche is pretty much taking advantage of casual gamers. That's why they have been focusing on their sports and mobile games. Because, unlike the Star Wars and general gaming community, they don't cause as much fuss when they do some egregious monetization. My "favorite" example of this in one of their casual series is the Sims, where they had paid dlc for their paid dlc. >.<
The ultimate team was completely broken on the last switch fifa. Im waiting to see how the reviews go before buying this time
@Regpuppy I seem to recall that at one point, I believe it was the Sims 2, they released so many expansions that the game with all the DLC was the most expensive game on the market by a factor of more than ten. Buying every expansion on the market at the time put the total cost at something like 800 dollars...
@Rika_Yoshitake based on what exactly? How about we wait till some previews come out confirming improvements or lack of first before writing the game off.
You have no evidence at all that FIFA 19 on switch is the same game as 18 with just a roster upgrade
@Heavyarms55 Ugh... I remember that. Worst part is that it wasn't that much because it was packed with content. They were just nickle and diming people hardcore. Some of their expansions costed as much as full games!
If they can put the new shooting mechanic in then they they can also put in the fast substituions feature which apparently wasn't present in the E3 build. Come on EA it is actually useful!
The E3 footage looked a noticeable improvement so very optimistic for this
@Rika_Yoshitake
I’ll support whatever I want thanks
They have my support yes. Oh and wait they have two sales from me, ill buy it as a gift also for my younger brother.
@electrolite77.
I will join you in supporting whatever I want, thanks.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I will always give them that but don’t command or order people what to do with their own hard earned money.
the only update i want it the ability to play against my friends online. don't care about anything else
I have Fifa 18 and, despite the lack of some modes, it was a great game. Had lots of fun with friends.
However, I'm not buying the 19 day one as I did before with 18.
I'm not crazy about sports games and I will wait until the price goes down.
@Rika_Yoshitake Well from some who've has a hands on with it they've said it looks noticeably better.
EA can tell a lot things. Most of the time, the improvements are a joke
They're time sinks and I have too many games to play, so I don't think so. Lacking The Journey, which I actually enjoyed in FIFA 17 for Xbox One, even less.
Besides, on other platforms their price drops after a few months.
Had some fun with 18 on the Switch but I mostly bought it in the hope they would bring Madden and NHL too. That's not happening so looks like I'll need to reinstate my ps plus when PES comes out. Still wish Konami would wake up and release PES on Switch.
I would love NHL Hitz oder NBA Street on Switch
@Moroboshi876 The regular Fifa price drop looks to be a thing on Switch too. The price more than halved ages ago.
@Krull Actually it was around the time the leagues had already ended. Too late for a football game. If they haven't been discounted before Christmas I don't buy them. Years ago it was possible to acquire them for half the price before Christmas. Lately it comes months into the new year. And I have FIFA 17 just because it came bundled with the Xbox One.
@Moroboshi876
Nah I FIFA 18 definitely went down to £25 around Feb/march.
I remember buying it at that time
@kobashi100 OK, maybe you're right. I never cared about this version, though. Lacking The Journey and with that Cristiano Ronaldo on the cover... not for me.
If they port it to frostbite and somehow make it run smoothly then it will be a day one purchase for me.
Already preordered months ago.
I may buy this year's game for the Switch. My son bought it for the PS4 the last two years but hasn't played it much since Fortnight came out. It'll be up to me to buy FIFA this year.
However, with everything that's coming out this Fall/Winter for the Switch, I might not have the time to play FIFA. Smash & Monster Hunter!!!!
@shadow-wolf All I want is Madden with online support to play against friends.
@Rika_Yoshitake I think the FIFA crowd made it clear last year that if the product is not good we will just stick to PS4/X1.
They either make a good product or need to fire-sell it at £19.99 like last time. EA can choose how many times they want to do that.
@Agramonte I wish they would just make madden for switch already. Playing fifa with my buddy made me forget how much fun it is to trash talk your opponent whose sitting next to you instead of online.
Last year I preferred the PS4 version; the Switch animations felt off. But I only buy new games for my Switch nowadays upon release (buy new PS4 games from bargain bin only) - so really hope this version is better than 2018. I were hoping for NHL as well on Switch but we look out of luck.
And as someone else said, oh please Konami give us some PES love next year...
@Regpuppy sport games is far different from other kinds of games. It relates to real life things that changes frequently and producers have to pay yearly money to keep up with. Unless you want a football game with no real players, leagues and teams then one game in a few years is fine.
@Nudawa Are you referring to their yearly releases? If so, they do NOT need to release them yearly, since they themselves admitted they earn more from microtransactions than actual game sales. They could afford to give the base game away for free, and they'd still pull a profit.
So no, I don't accept that explanation for having yearly releases AND heavy microtransactions.
