Much noise has been made recently about Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion, a new single player add-on that considerably expands on the already meaty single player campaign in the base game. Indeed, considering the staggering amount of post-launch content that Splatoon 2 has received, and in light of the recent announcement that support will continue for longer than initially announced, some have wondered if the game may be receiving more sizable updates like this in the future. Unfortunately, it sounds like Octo Expansion was a one-off.
In a recent interview with Polygon, producer Hisashi Nogami said that the team doesn’t have any plans for more premium single player releases like Octo Expansion. However, he does seem open to the idea of producing some sort of premium multiplayer content, though he a was keen to note that it would have to be adequately balanced so it wouldn’t fall into the “pay-to-win” trap that other online shooters have fallen into.
What do you think? Would you buy another Splatoon expansion? What kind of paid multiplayer content would you like to see? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Shame as I only play the single player.
Amazing game but when you can’t even play with your mates it’s a total joke. Bought at launch with my brothers and we couldn’t play on the same team, we all sold it right then.
I bought it back for the Octo DLC and I see nothing has changed. Nintendo have some gaul to charge for online when it’s so ******* limited!
On PS4 I can play hundreds of games with my mates AND voice chat with them. Even better, mates who aren’t playing with us can join and chat.
What a novel approach to online 🙄
Given how well made the octo expansion is, many would pay for another paid DLC expansion. Even if it is only multiplayer related.
@HappyRusevDay Turf war allows you to play with anyone on your friends list. League mode is basically rank mode with your squad mates. Only mode that is pure solo is Ranked mode.
Even if we aren't on the same team all the time, it's still a fun game when we play together. The voice chat could be better but we all use Discord so not a huge loss.
I'd totally be down for another expansion. Better than yearly 60 dollar releases.
Given the increased sales in Japan, wonder if they'll get new orders from upstairs like "Make another expansion! This stuff's a goldmine!".
@HappyRusevDay yeah, because you're just entitled to have things for free forever right? Has it never occured to you that Nintendo's online is so basic because until the paid service launches it is nothing but a drain on their resources? Once they start profiting off it the incentive will be there for them to expand it.
@Heavyarms55 @HappyRusevDay He's gotta point. Just be glad the Nintendo Switch Online service will be cheaper then it's competitors.
I would like to see more customization options for hairstyles, weapons, and gear.
I also wouldn't mind seeing some premium turf packs that players can invite friends to play on.
I also wish they would make new kinds of turf battles available with different rules or something or different challenges like Salmon Run. Maybe even a co-op boss challenge that has a difficulty that is based on how many players join.
There are so many option, but more content is very welcome!
@HappyRusevDay Either you never actually bought the game and your just trying to fanboy on the PS4 or your really not very smart. Next time, instead of purchasing the same game twice and being disappointed that it doesn't have the features you want, maybe check to see what the features are beforehand? You will save yourself a lot of money.
Octo Expansion was great. I’m not surprised that’s it for single player. It’s already got a ton of content. Not sure if I would go for multiplayer DLC, because cosmetics don’t interest me, and anything substantial would fracture the online community into those who bought and those who didn’t. I’m already very happy with the game.
Bring on Splatoon 3! I want playable Salmonids (kidding - kind of).
@sashj Yes, I'm all for the hair styles. I would love to see my octoling with better looking hair. The fohawk is okay but the afro is just bleh.
I have a hard time seeing how they could add new paid multiplayer content without messing everything up unless it was purely cosmetic. I'd be 100% okay with buying another set of challenges that rewards you with some cosmetic themed items. I get the feeling that any story type stuff would most likely be saved for Splatoon 3 though. There were some questions left after the events of the Octo Expansion that I think could make for an amazing story to explore in the next game for sure.
Kinda bummed the wardrobe options see little updating. Now that the expansion has shown floating Gamecubes, Gameboys and misc. Nintendo carts, why not a Mario tee or Link hat? One of the levels has an 8-bit Octorok from Zelda II slapped on the wall as is.
Other than Smash and the online service. I don't think I'll be getting anything else on Switch this year. Maybe Octopath. Other than that, I think I'm good.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a paid multiplayer dlc.
Something in the style of titanfall 1's "story driven" multiplayer, just executed better.
Enjoying Octo Expansion so far. But I might pass on paid multiplayer dlc. I personally can't invest too much time into multiplayer. I don't get the sense of progression I feel when I play other shooters. But in small infrequent bursts, I do like my Splatoon multiplayer
I sure hope not. Going by how bad Smash 4's post launch monetization was. That game was $40 on 3DS, $60 on WII U with each version having exclusive content, required a $20 adapter to fully enjoy the WII U version and had $80 of DLC. That's $200 for one complete game (not counting Amiibo).
Splatoon 2 is already at $80 (not counting Amiibo) so I think it's unreasonable for Nintendo to ask for any more investment from us in just one game.
@sashj "your just trying to fanboy on the PS4 or your really not very smart"
The irony here is top-notch.
@Luke937 Can't always expect DLC to be free. They have something in the works for Splatoon 2 after the octo expansion, and many players will buy it. Especially if the DLC is good as thr current one.
I'd definitely buy more single player content but I'm not a multiplayer guy so I'd pass on that.
I would buy any new multiplayer-content, i don't even bother about any singleplayer-campaign in this game. Hopefully Splatoon get many free updates over the years, financed by the Nintendo Online Service.
I would expect paid multiplayer to be something along the lines of Salmon Run, in which case I might be interested if it looked decent value.
I would love to see the game expanded and have an even longer life but you need to deliver that content to ALL players. Split the player base and the game will die.
Now the game is a year old I would be fine with paid for cosmetics being added as long as we saw consistent updates to gameplay.
@Luke937 I never get this kind of thinking.
"How much content do you get for the money?" That is the only question that matters.
Not, "How much do I need to pay to have everything?". That doesn't make sense.
Without all the extra stuff: Is Smash for Wii U for 60$ worth it to you? If your answer is yes, then why should the extra content matter at all?
@HappyRusevDay I think you mean voice chat? There is nothing stopping you playing with your friends in Splatoon
I think Nintendo should focus on improving the online service, the amount of disconnections during the Splatfest this weekend was unacceptable. Virtually every game I played had disconnections, 4vs2 isn't fun, 2vs4 even less so.
I'm in.
@Heavyarms55
That's funny, because I play Overwatch and other games on PC online with way better features than Nintendo provides, for free!
Really makes you think...
@sashj
YOU GOT HIM!
How dare that IDIOT think he could play an online video game online, on a team with friends, in 2018? Truly he is the fool here, and definitely not the company who made these asinine decisions.
I’ll pay ya five bucks if you put squid jump back in the game
@BLD Funny how games on PC already have all that online infrastructure pre-built! Funny how gaming PCs cost roughly between 500 and 1000 dollars, dramatically more than a Switch. Funny how the PC master race snobs like you always seem to disregard those details. Funny how you whine and complain, yet still follow games on Switch that are so bad and you are so angry about those things you think you should get for free that you "could" get elsewhere.
If you are so happy with your games on PC, why do you even care about Switch? Or any other platform? I get it. No console will ever match a gaming PC in raw power or established online support, but no PC like that will ever match the affordability or convenience of a device like the Switch.
Like what? More gear? More weapons?
Duelie Squelchers are over-powered anyways. (Before people disagree me, the fact that they have more range than a splattershot and are basically the equivalent of the splattershot pro in terms of range but with rapid fire makes it too powerful)
Singleplayer makes sense for paid because that's a whole new experience, but new gear? Weapons? That's just more of the same.
@Heavyarms55
Wait can you please explain to me how the cost of a PC is at all relevant? Do you honestly think the Overwatch devs or whoever see a dime of that PC cost?
And yet somehow that game is free to play online. Interesting how that works!
Also I love how Heavyarms argument is basically that I'm not allowed to like or comment on anything Nintendo because I dared criticize their online. Apparently blind adoration for every decision Nintendo has ever made is a prerequisite for posting here. Pointing out the facts makes you "PC Master Race" now.
@Shard1
I wonder what they plan, too. Didn't they just say the other day they were dedicated to making multiplayer a level playing field in the face of the upcoming paid online?
I don't know how they plan to implement paid multiplayer content without doing just that. Unless it's just cosmetic.
Seems like the comment section has gotten extra toxic after E3 and that’s saying something considering they were already a bit testy
@Kirgo Well that's the thing. Smash 4 is Worth $60. But the DLC, which is $80 and only adds 10% more characters and stages and a few useless Mii fighter outfits is not worth the asking price.
I don't get the "don't like it don't buy it argument" especially since the best 2 characters (Bayonneta and Cloud) are locked behind a paywall. Not all DLC needs to be free but it needs to be priced reasonably.
Splatoon 2 introducing gameplay altering multiplayer DLC would not be good for those not willing to pay. If they want to stop giving us free content I'm fine with that. If they are going to charge us for anything I want it to be Splatoon 3.
Splatoon 2 is the most played game on my Switch. (I think...) Speaking purely for myself, if there's any game that deserves more dough out of me, it's probably this one.
Unlike games like Call of Duty Blops 4 (or pretty much everything else announced at E3) that announce their DLC and season passes at the same time or before they're even announced, this game has lead with a strong, core experience at retail price. Anything else has been a worthy addition, but nothing absolutely essential. It's all just icing on an already delicious cake, and I'll gladly take seconds.
Hmm... I’m not sure what they could add multiplayer wise. Honestly after playing some Fortnite I think implementing some kind of daily/ weekly challenges would be kind of neat. Maybe earning some cool, exclusive gear for it. I also think it’s cool how the game modes change in FN so maybe if they added exclusive DLC ranked battle modes? A limited time thing. I would buy into that. I can’t expect Nintendo to keep giving away all this content for free in updates. Don’t get me wrong I like it but I know that other companies would charge you through the nose for the extras that Splatoon itself has gotten.
@AcridSkull You need to keep in mind that those could have been rage quitters. Usually, when the team is loosing or they know it's hopeless, they just exit the game. They rather deal with the actual ban timmers then try to play to win.
@Shard1 Duel Squelchers are a popular weapon but they are not over powered. The reduced attack speed, not to mention the loss of the dodge role bonus, make them fairly balanced compared to most weapons. Plus, at close range, they are pretty much useless (unless you can get 4 accurate shots in).
@Shade_Koopa
I beg to differ. They can dodge roll.
And it may seem like lowered attack speed but it's really not when they have more range than a splattershot pro. Maybe I'm just really bad at the game, but those and N-Zaps are the bane of my existence. And blasters. But I don't want to get into arguments about weapons in an adding more content to Splatoon 2. The point being, please no pay to win weapons.
@Shard1 fair enough, to both points.
@Shade_Koopa 99% of the time people are missing from the start.
@AcridSkull Maybe for you, but I mostly see people dcing in the middle of the match. Maybe..5 percent of the time it's a genuine d/c, but I'm going to say it's either to rage quitters or bad internet by the user. (Note: This is from my experience, I could just as easily be wrong.)
@Shade_Koopa if the game had servers instead of using P2P I think we'd see the majority of these problems disappear.
@AcridSkull yes, to the genuine d/c, but not to those that rage quit. As for the server thing, we may get them down the road due to going to a paid online service. If not, then time to get better internet.
@Shade_Koopa I can't see Nintendo changing the way online works in the games that already out. In fact, I can't see them adding servers for future games either, and there's nothing I can do about other people's crappy internet.
@AcridSkull shrugs not sure what to tell ya man.
@Shade_Koopa do you not have an uncle that works for Nintendo that can fix this?
@AcridSkull heha, I wish. Sides, something has to be broken to be fixed. As I don't have any issues with the current online of the Switch, at least with regards to d/c, I say all good. ^^
@Shade_Koopa what's broken is Nintendo's approach to online multiplayer, using P2P connections for 8 player games, asking us to pay for it, and then pretending it makes us smile.
