GoldenEye 007 is one of the N64's most beloved titles; as well as introducing an entire generation of players to the joys of FPS deathmatches it sold by the bucketload and established its developer Rare as one of the UK's most talented codeshops.
Fast forward to the present, and industrious modders have taken GoldenEye 007 and transformed it into another of James Bond's famous cinematic escapades: Goldfinger.
The mod introduces new levels based on locations in the 1964 spy flick, new character models and fresh sound effects and music, as well as a host of other things.
Will you be giving this a whirl, or do you find GoldenEye 007 a little bit painful to play after two decades of FPS evolution and progression? Let us know with a comment below.

"Spectacular". I think not. It's quiet today, isn't it?
That was laughably poor.
All jokes aside, they should go back and make games of old Bond films. Always wanted that. From Russia With Love was great on Gamecube.
Edit: I've just watched it and it was really good! If you're a big Bond and Nintendo fan, it's wonderful work.
At least it wasn't as bad as the other attempt by that other studio. If only they (Goldeneyevault) could save the Wii U "version".
Okay, the couches blew up. I'm good with this.
They going to make a cart? If they do I'll give it a try. And it's still playable, just use dual controller setup.
Wooaah!! My favorite 007 movie!
Mostly because this:

May we have the best laser scene ever made in, now, all glorious 90s polygons!
Goldeneye really is best remembered through the rose-tinted lenses of nostalgia. Having revisited it in recent months I can say that time has not been kind to poor Goldeneye...
I'm active on their forums, they have been working on this since @ 2011.
The amount of work they put into this is incredible, sad that some commenters here don't appreciate that. Can't please everyone I guess.
This looks ace. If you enjoyed the original you'll surely enjoy this.
I kind of want this.
Awesome effort, lets party like it's 1998.
As a big fan of 007, I will be giving this a go. Looks like a lot of effort has gone into it!
Goldeneye still has the best FPS multiplayer of all time. Get 4 people together and you'll have a good time.
I'd love a cart version of this mod if only just to have some new multiplayer options.
Amazing!! will download for my flash cart later tonight!!
Not usually a fan of ROMs/mods - but for GoldenEye I'll make an exception! The complex rights situation surrounding the original means that it's unlikely to ever hit consoles again (in an official capacity) - this is a great way of keeping a true classic alive...and dusting it with a fresh new skin only adds to that! Bravo! Great job!
@CrazyMetroid N64 games tend to produce some polarizing reactions around here. They have neither the polished pixel art of the NES/SNES nor the cinematic quality that would come with modern consoles. The textures tend to be awkward and the character designs tend to look like balloons taped together with features drawn on them.
If people can get past that, though, there were some great experiences to be had in the era. Denigrating games like this and the love that went into building them is not really fair. The 64 era was exciting and many of us grew up loving the system.
@-DG @Danrenfroe2016 You can just download it to a SD card get a Flashcart and play it that way. Either that or find someone who can make a repro of it.
@thesilverbrick that's your opinion though mate - we boot it up every few months - still fantastic fun.
Depends what your looking for though - a typical COD fan who just wants to be funneled along corridors like yourself won't like it though.
@Muddy_4_Ever the only polarising reactions are people looking to either a) troll for attention b) Sega or Sony fanboys who hate the N64 - it receives a ridiculus amount of hate for a console with the most genre defining and innovative titles in comparison to its small catalogue. N64 was recognised for revolutionising 3D gaming in the 90s - unfortunately due to the amount of Sony and Sega fanboys trying to show the PS1 and Saturn as being the best they can only do so by posting nothing but lies and hate on the system with no evidence - this lies and hate is now taken as trusted source by today's journalists which again only spreads further lies.
GoldenEye is still exceptional to play to this day and anyone who disagree is probably only experienced it by attempting to play it on a keyboard through an emulator.
@liveswired I will admit I was entertained by my revisit to Goldeneye, but it wasn't in the same way I was entertained back in the 90s. The game still makes me smile, for sure, but everything about it is antiquated, particularly the control scheme, which by modern standards makes the game somewhat of a chore. But hey, I'm glad you still play and enjoy it like you used to. More power to you.
@thesilverbrick
Haven't tried goldeneye for a while, but Perfect Dark holds up great on 64. Although it's weird having only one stick so I used what I thought at the time was ludicrous..... TWO 64 controllers so you could have dual analog. lol. VISIONARY!
"console compatibility" means someone could put this on a cart and sell it to me for $50 on ebay right?
@NaviAndMii
Yes, the future is bleak for official Goldeneye releases.
I was hoping on Playtronic to focus on a "Glodeneye style" fps after Yooka-Laylee, but reviews were so disappointing that I didn't even bother with it.
I've been playing GoldenEye non-stop lately since I got my N64 modded with the UltraHDMI board. I still think it's an amazing game, the levels have such variety with different objectives and weapons that every mission is a different treat. It's also so different from every other FPS game that it feels unique.
I think if you can play and enjoy Resident Evil 4 you should have no problem with GoldenEye as the control system is basically the same (tank controls and holding R to aim). The game is designed around those controls too so enemies are tuned to be fair.
I'll definitely be giving Goldfinger 64 a go!
Haha, that's cute.
Woah, they actually finished it! =D
I was torn weather I wanted to go for an Everdrive for the N64 or the SNES during the Black Friday sale this year, this might help sway me one way or the other...
@thesilverbrick I could never tolerate the original control scheme, I always have to change it to 1.2 (stick to aim, C-buttons for strafing). I much prefer it to modern FPS with dual analogue...well, that is, if the N64 stick is still in good condition, anyhow...
This is incredible. Kudos to the brilliant team behind this! The level of detail and polish behind this is amazing. And, perhaps it's just me, but the enemies seemed to have improved AI compared to the original game (making 00 Agent even further agonizing).
If someone makes a repro cart of this that I can play on my N64 I would buy it! Wow! This really shows the power and talent of the fan community. First Sonic Mania and now this. NICE!
@Asaki N64 controllers with decent analog sticks are becoming an increasing rarity.
I've been playing through GoldFinger 64 and thryve done a great job in recreating that GoldenEye feel. If you're still an N64 fan like myself this should be experienced and appreciated for the ridiculous amount of hard work that seems to have gone into it. The level of detail for what it is impresses.
What @N64Memories already said. It's a little rough around the edges in a few places, but otherwise it's as if it were a sequel to GoldenEye 007 that released back in the day. Still has that sandbox, objective-based approach but the new environments, guns, character models, sound effects, etc. make it feel very distinctive too. Some of the levels are absolutely massive too - perhaps a little too big in places (affecting the frame rate) but it's forgivable.
I would like to see these guys who did Goldfinger 64 do a Tomorrow Never Dies game in that style or better use the Perfect Dark engine.
