While Zelda fans the world over waited patiently for more news on the upcoming Breath of the Wild 2, Nintendo served up a vintage helping of Zelda action this summer in the form of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD.
Landing on the Nintendo Switch on 16th July, the release of this high-def remaster of the original Wii game was accompanied not only by a pair of new Skyward Sword Joy-Con, but also a brand new amiibo featuring Zelda and her Loftwing companion.
Launching on the same day as the game, this Zelda / Loftwing amiibo is the only figure that works with the new Switch version of the game. What does it do? Tapping the amiibo to the right Joy-Con enables Link to move between Skyloft and the world down below at any time without the need to find a specific location — a brand of 'fast travel', if you will. Handy! Response to the notion of 'locking' this feature behind an amiibo purchase was mixed, to say the least, and as you can see below, this Loftwing amiibo also costs more than your average Nintendo-branded NFC figurine. Still, try as we might, we're finding it difficult to resist.
If you're looking to land a Loftwing alongside the Switch launch, check out the best Skyward Sword amiibo deals we could find below.

Welp. Can't wait to see this being scalped.
NL please I know its a guide but, STOP IT STOP IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!
Sad part is all the bots got to most of them.
I know this is an expensive amiibo, but those UK prices are eyewatering compared to the US ones (£24.85 is approx $35)!
Personally I don't want to take up space with plastic figures, so this is a hard pass for me. I wish Nintendo did official NFC/RFID cards - the hole is plugged by non-official ones on eBay, which are a whole lot more tempting than amiibo from my point of view.
I know we were warned this would be more expensive, but I wasn’t expecting it to be that much in GBP. I was expecting £20, not £30.
Unfortunately this article is about 3 days too late for everyone in the US.
There are rumors that Best buy and GameStop are releasing pre-orders slowly at the top of the hour, however there is absolutely nothing to confirm this. All four of these companies have already released some pre-orders with Amazon and Target confirming they have all pre-orders already allocated.
£30 or $25. Hmmmm.
This article is worthless to me.
Amazon, GameStop, Target, and Best Buy already had their pre-orders out and they sold out as expected.
I ended getting a pre-order from Target, but don't fret over £35, my UK bois, as some of us is spending upwards of $33 based on online shipping and taxes.
And remember, no one has a gun to your head to buy these items.
You either want them, or you don't, but you definitely don't need them.
£30?! What the actual heck?
I already got my pre-order in. At Dutch retailer nedgame, it's not even sold out there. € 29,99.
https://www.nedgame.nl/merchandise/amiibo-the-legend-of-zelda-skyward-sword-hd---zelda---loftwing/5210718846/
@ManaOwls
On Amazon UK it's showing up as pre-order for me.
I placed my order yesterday.
It's Amazon US that appears to lack a listing, but be advised that Amazon UK orders will ship to US.
Bless Nintendo for a double priced trinket and Zelda themed drift-cons so that inflexible collectors can spend 160 dollars on a ten year old port of the worst Zelda game. Yikes. I will be passing on all of this. I could fire up Skyward Sword on my Wii, but I'd rather play almost anything else.
Hmmm 30 quid for this, 70 for the joycons... already £100 in the hole and no game...... I love skyward sword but I think I might have to rethink my priorities on this one!
@ManaOwls
It might very much be a region thing then, Ireland is often treated differently from mainland England.
People complaining about the price
People complaining it's selling out everywhere already
If a perfect price point is one where you just about sell out of every single one you are making, Nintendo have absolutely nailed this one.
£30? well go then, I do like the look of this one
I've been playing games since the early 80's and the scalpers and bots have just about ruined a hobby that I used to adore. It's getting so bad now that they're buying controllers. Want a new controller? Pay this guy a premium. This has to stop or it will eventually destroy the industry.
I'm just going to avoid the headache by getting the amiibo card on Etsy.
@KayFiOS
You collect the cards?
If not, I'd avoid paying for one of the most useless Amiibo features ever.
@JuiceMan_V I bought a collection of all the Zelda amiibo cards, so I think yeah at this point I am collecting them lol. I'll probably won't get the card until after I already played through Skyward Sword HD, though.
Looks nice. but not that into collecting figures etc, and the QOL OR DLC, ( whatever we decided it is ) is of little interest to me.
@ukaskew Exactly this.
Absolutely worthless article for me as it doesn't have the Australian information. However I did get a pre-order in before they sold out at EB games.
£30? Are they out of their minds?
@ukaskew what I don’t get is why things sell out in preorders. The preorder is to inform how many they should make. At least that’s how it used to be. These things are still mass produced and aren’t marketed as limited quantity items (with a hard number).
They were sold out in the US almost immediately. It certainly was bots. I can't believe websites haven't done more to take care of this.
Even though I was able to get my pre-order in (GameStop, in-store, 2nd day) they way Nintendo handled this reveal and release was absolutely horrible!
Randomly at night the revealed it
Then two retailers posted their randomly pre-orders randomly at 5:30pm the next day and sold out in seconds
Then the next day no one had it in their in-store database. And didn't know when or if it would show up because they didn't know if it was going to be retailer specific.
Then GameStop got some in-store for ship to home pre-orders and those went really fast
Then amazon and Target started taking pre-orders randomly later that night.
Who the heck was in charge of this?
This was one mess up followed by a bungle followed by incompetence that needs some sort of explanation and accountability!
Ugh. This is gonna be a thing. Thanks, scalpers, for yet another thing! Some of us just wanna get an Amiibo and put it on our shelves and sometimes fast-travel. It doesn't need to be a thing!
@Cheez Same here. And I feel like if they really wanted to, they could.
Thanks nintendolife, got my preorder in with Amazon UK using your link.
Might need to sell my BOTW Zelda amiibo to cover the cost, but this amiibo looks so much better!
I tried refreshing for days to no avail… I was quite frustrated at how silently they became available for preorder and then suddenly went out of stock. FYI, Play-Asia has the Japan version up for preorder availability. It may have cost more, but I was able to secure a preorder until the American page goes live for less hopefully. Enjoying something as simple as this shouldn’t be so hard. This isn’t capitalism at work, just greed.
I am sure I will be purchasing this off of someone for much more than the listed price :/
I almost got this but common sense prevailed and I'm actually looking forward to taking in the scenery instead of using fast travel.
I played Skyward Sword on my Wii U. Not once did I feel the urgency to look for the nearest bird statue in order to return to Skyloft. It's a really nice looking Amiibo, for those who collect them, but as far as functionality goes, I think it's a bit of a lazy move by Nintendo.
At the moment,
this amiibo is just fast travel for Skyward Sword,
but have y'all figured out yet that it would also be eventually utilized for Breath of the Wild 2?
sold out in the US as of this post. probably 10% consumers and 90% scalpers.
Not sold out in Aus thankfully. This reminded me to get a move on.
Where To Pre-Order The Zelda: Skyward Sword Zelda Loftwing amiibo? Ebay!
@RupeeClock up on GameStop Ireland currently for 20 quid. Hope you nab one.
Sold out on Amazon UK now. I think Amazon will get some in stock again. Also I can see them dropping the price from £29.99 to £24.99 by the time it is released.
This is getting out of hand. Why are people buying this? Even as a pretty hardcore collector of all things Nintendo I can see this is a step too far and the point where I bow out. Got to stop encouraging this king of thing.
Here in the Netherlands we've got a retailer that sells the game with an exclusive steelcase. https://zeldauniverse.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/skyward-sword-hd-steelbook-scaled.jpg
Nintendo UK Store also has stock for the SteelBook and Keyring if you're hunting that down.
I already secured the SteelBook edition from a brief window over at 365games, and the amiibo from Amazon.
Take my money and my dignity Nintendo. I’ll work for free in one of your factories because I love you so much. Best company ever.
Wondering if it’s worth £21.99 now seems more inline with the US price which is good. Is this much bigger than normal ones?
I'm glad I waited now with that lower price direct from Nintendo. I still don't plan to use it while playing though.
@quinnyboy58 From photos of the amiibo it has the exact same sized base as every other amiibo. its likely a little bigger cus its two characters on one base, but thats about it
do we get gold coins from the mynintendo store now????
£22 is slightly more reasonable... still not sure why it costs more than the Guardian amiibo did.
I’m sorry. But Nintendo charging $60 for a 10+ year old game plus $25 for added functionality is gross, and I will not support it.
Thanks, Nlife. This brings the price almost in line with the Japanese price. They've also got the Monster Hunter Stories 2 amiibo up for pre-order, too.
@CrazyCats your 20% VAT is added into the price where as sales tax is not added for US prices. Plus, they likely priced in uncertainty surrounding the pound due to brexit and whatnot, if I had to guess.
I am just upset that once again it is a UK only shipping region. If Nintendo would just allow me to purchase things I would be so much more of a customer.
The Joycons are also available on Amazon UK
For those looking to buy this in the UK, It’s £21.99 from My Nintendo Store. I was expecting their usual stupid flat rate shipping charge of about £8 but was pleasantly surprised to see FREE SHIPPING on it. £21.99 is the best deal i’ve found.
As much as this is the first amiibo I might actually be interested in getting, I'm still not going to buy it because I don't want to encourage this behavior.
Please dont take this the wrong way fellow Nintendoers but is there a U.S. version of this site? I get excited reading all the articles but when stuff goes up for preorder they always seems to be available in the U.K. But wont ship to U.S.
We handle preorders absolutely terribly. When the zedla joycons and this amiibo went up for preorder there were no notifications or indication of exactly when they went live so naturally i missed out on them cause of the stupid bots, so i had to resort to paying scalper prices for the joy cons.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love this site and will continue to use it on a daily basis!
@15roundTKO Took the words right out of my mouth!
NINJA APPROVED
@nymbosox To my knowledge, this is the only NL site. I get what you mean though, sometimes we get the news late due to the time change!
@BloodNinja yeah but you know what? The links in this article still lead to available preorders, they just dont ship to U.S. but Nintendo Life could use a U.S. chapter/affiliation, wink wink lol
@nymbosox That would be pretty cool!
@nymbosox nlife often include sections for pre-ordering in the US as they're aware a large portion of their audience is there, so I'm presuming the lack of any US pre-order info here is because it's not yet available.
@Otoemetry They went up for preorder in like 3 stores here when they were first announced, i had alerts and whatnot set up and never got them when they actually went live. From what ive heard they were gone in less than 2 mins
@Nejsayer Well yeah, it's £20+. That's how their free shipping policy works.
@nymbosox that's the problem, UK games journalists have little sway when it comes to in store preorders. You can't hold it against them really, and I've definitely seen articles with US preorders included when those preorders have been online rather than in store.
You know what? I'm gonna waste money on either a $20 USB Device to make my own amiibo, or go cheaper, and buy a card from someone from Etsy who deserves my money more! In fact, I should rewrite my Inkling amiibo from Splatoon to be usable in Smash Ultimate! Wonder where I can get a Daisy cheap enough.
@Otoemetry I mainly come on this site for the articles and news and not necessarily for pre-orders and stuff because I know about the delay that the journalists get But Amazon, target, Best Buy and GameStop are all fairly dependable retailers and I’ve gotten alerts for different things before that went up for pre-order and I would be fine but ever since this whole next-GEN console debacle broke out it’s been nearly impossible for me and countless others to get anything anymore
@ModdedInkling Already happening. Can't find them.
everywhere l go right now its sold out.
here comes the scalpers
@nymbosox and that's a real shame, I feel for you as someone who has lost out to scalpers myself in the past... but the direction of your ire should be towards scalpers in the first place for being horrible pond scum levels of lowlife human beings, and also to the companies who don't make enough stock to satisfy everyone. Christ I just will never understand why Nintendo would leave so much money sitting on the table whilst scalpers sell their products for a 2000% markup!
Can't wait to upload the .bin onto my powersave. Lol
Wait are you serious this game is coming out after E3???? Good f****** God now I know exactly what to expect 45 minutes of this game
Pre-ordered and I hate myself for it. Would genuinely have felt better spending £20 on an in-app purchase and not have to deal with plastic tat.
@Yoshilapin and Mario golf 🥲
@Otoemetry Because the amiibos are Limited Edition, on purpose! If they were cards, we'd get them bundled with the games! Maybe I should get a heart attack, trying to dig out my Wii U, hooking it up, and plugging in the System, the Gamepad, and the External Hard Drive I have for it, and then buy batteries for my Wii Remote Plus, Zelda Edition, and play the Original Game, because that's what I'm better off doing at this point!
Maybe Nintendo should sell "Make Your Own Amiibo Kits" with Refill packs of cards for those disadvantaged buyers, and then we get a Digital amiibo Store where we can buy the amiibo data for us to load onto the cards to use as many times as we like. No more having to pay outrageous prices for figures, when all you really need is the data!
This was available on Amazon uk to preorder and they ship to the us
https://www.amazon.co.uk/amiibo-Zelda-Loftwing-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B095BSLP25/ref=sr_1_2?crid=LM1A8HIJBDVI&dchild=1&keywords=zelda+amiibo&qid=1623363268&sprefix=Zelda%2Caps%2C249&sr=8-2
@YoshiAngemon not sure I agree with you there, why would Nintendo purposefully make them so limited if they knew they'd be popular? Standard amiibo were only £10.99 (at first anyway) which is not an outrageous price for a videogame figurine, especially considering some of the series represented. I just think Nintendo are super conservative with their stock numbers, which is probably unsurprising considering the Wii U debacle but at this point in the amiibo cycle you'd think they'd get their stock predictions a bit closer to reality.
I was gonna tag nintendolife about a pretty good deal on the game itself at 365games.co.uk but then I realised they have affiliate links for Amazon so I'm not sure they'd care.
£38.99 on pre-order but you have to pay up front.
@Otoemetry I honestly wish i had a response for that. I can’t even think of anything that would resemble a rational explanation.
Sold my switch, its just turned into another overhyped, overpriced console that nintendo has abandoned to third parties and trickled out wiiu re releases to keep up appearances, and now another wii re release and they charge you for amiibo for a normal ingame function. Change my mind.
(Watch this space by all the nintendo zealots whi want blood because someone has criticized their idol toy)
@TruthisRare Good luck finding an Xbox Series X/S or a PS5. I mean, at least those games are better. Besides, if Nintendo truly has abandoned the Wii U, they would've closed the Wii U eShop, instead of keeping it open and delisting the Digital version of Skyward Sword, like they did with Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze.
@YoshiAngemon
There is no denying nintendo have made some of the best games ever! Ive owned every nintendo since nes (also had gba, ds, 3ds)
My wiiu is still one of my fav consoles.
Actually, my series x (yes i realize microsoft hasnt released anything triple A in years, but man, playing all the back compat games in hdr upscaled etc is great) and wiiu are both my fav consoles.
At least on wiiu, nintendo was a little more giving, what with all the gba, n64, ds, snes and wii eshop games.
Switch is a good portable hybrid console, but for me, switch is overrated (again, for me, if you love it, im happy for you) and re lack of eshop back compat games (got sick of waiting for metroid 4 they announced all those years ago)and new ones, its also a disappointing one.
@TruthisRare Do you have any idea how to install a portable disc drive on the Switch? They omitted that component, because it would make it too bulky for a portable, and give Nintendo a reason to make a console AND a handheld successor to the 3DS, rather than a hybrid.
@YoshiAngemon : Switch cartridges have a faster read speed than optical discs (hence why games can be played directly from the cartridge without installation), and are also better suited for portable use due to their size and lack of moving parts.
I suppose modders/hackers can produce an optical disc drive for the Switch one of these days, but I wouldn't expect it to happen any time soon, nor do I think that there would be any reasonable need to do so as it would be far more practical to hack/mod the Switch so that it can read/run ISOs rather than developing an optical disc drive that can only be used via the dock.
Amiibo is currently back in stock at Amazon.co.jp
Grab it while you can…
It also was in stock a short time at Amazon.com
