Review Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (Wii U eShop / SNES)
The Mario RPG that started it all
There are very few areas of life the Mario franchise hasn't at some point explored. Mario himself has been a doctor, an amateur kart racer and later on in his career was recognised as a professional athlete when he competed at the Olympic Games in the 100 metre dash against Sonic. Quite simply – he's a jack of all...

Even though im from Europe, i am soooooo wanting this game right now... i will have to admit it will be the first RPG i will have ever played.. And by reviews its a good way to start!
I'm glad Japan finally gets this, so the whole whining will finally come to an end...and I'll be able to thoroughly play it, finally.
I've played it for many times years ago. Love this game.
I'm screaming.
Ok, I was totally screaming.
I don't care if it's 900 points.
I AM getting this when it hits Europe.
i thought paper mario on the n64 was going to be good, but i found the mechanics to be way over simplified, is it similar in this game? also has this ever been released in europe?
No, the game is nothing like Paper Mario. There is actual platforming instead of platforming-esque puzzles, you can have 3 party members in a battle at a time (There's a total of 5), you can equip yourself with different weapons, armour and accessoires, and there's Special Attacks (Comparable to PM's star powers I guess).
The only real similarity with PM is a "timed hit" system, where you deal more damage and take less if you hit a button at the moment of impact. I also really have to say SMRPG has one of the best Mario soundtracks ever made, it's so amazing.
And nope, sadly it was never released in Europe. Hope for an import release!
that's a long intro video!
Finally, a solid release date. It may not be for NA or Europe but this dispells all the contriversy involving it's release at least. No longer can we argue about "if" it will come but instead about "when" it will come.
I had a sneaky feeling that all of those games that are "no longer ESRB rated" would show up again. Remember Nintendo works in mysterious ways.
Mario = $
Did anyone actually think that we wouldn't get this game eventually?
As soon as I finish up Chrono Trigger I think I'll take Mario RPG for a spin again. It's been awhile.
This was a great rpg, I love the bowser/mario power moves.
My predicted/hopeful release date for all regions:
Japan: June (just in case they think they can delay it)
US: July/August
Europe: (Sorry, you'll probably have to wait for Hanabi)
Why does Europe and Australia have to wait for September for Super Mario RPG! Just because it's the 3rd Hanabi : (
OMG I STILL CANT BELIEVE IT
i think i wet my pants a little bit
so happy ^^
See? I tried to convince you all it would come out.
5 stars. Best game ever.
Best music is the forest music! Awesome! Must have Vc game! 5 stars!
Didnt Paper Mario come out around June 07 for everybody? Hopefully this is a repeat!
Paper Mario came out July 07.
I personally think ANYONE, young or old, will enjoy this game if they haven't already played it. There's not a single person in my family that didn't like this game when it came out. Overall, if you liked Paper Mario, this game makes Paper Mario look like crap.
That's quite an accolade, Viral! Paper Mario is cool.
I'll definitely get my hands on this one when it is available for me to do so.
As much as I love the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi titles, there is nothing like the original Super Mario RPG.
I just don't find it appealling. Yes, I do play RPGs.
Looking forward to this immensely. Shame I'll have to delete my Wii game saves to make room! Sorry MySims, you might have to be erased. DAMN YOU NINTENDO...DAMN YOUUUUUUU!
"Overall, if you liked Paper Mario, this game makes Paper Mario look like crap"
Finally, someone who shares my point of view ^^
The world of Virtual Console somehow magically seems about 7 times more exciting now that this is back in the realm of possible releases. I will forgive Nintendo for the horrible year 08 (it has been so far) if they just release this in Europe. Please, pretty please!
omfg! i need 2 get this game. ive been w8in 4 it since the beginning of vc. its really good. i got this game as an original snes cartridge. it is the best and my moat favorite rpg 4 the snes.
This or earthbound?
^Both!
But from the looks of it, SMRPG is going to come out first, so I'd focus on that. Then you'll have plenty of time to get money for Earthbound.
Woohoo!
Square has always been ahead of Nintendo in terms of graphics, and this is no exception. I might get yelled at for this, but i like this game much more than Earthbound.
This'll be a pass for me. It's somewhat middling as an RPG... but if you lurves your Mario in your RPGs then it should be a good pick for you.
@ Big=Sexy:
Haha! Good to see that somebody agrees with me! I agree with your comment about the battle system; it was revolutionary. SMRPG wasn't as long a game as i would have hoped for, but it has plenty of replay value and the gamepley really shines.
best game ever.
everyone look at my icon :]
Overall, if you liked Paper Mario, this game makes Paper Mario look like crap.
Wha-juh-huh-buh! No theres no way its true! Ive played both and found them both fun.
Does this game have equipable stuff in it, and if so do they actually do anything(stat-raising doesn't count)?
@mr.niceguy
Yeah, you can equip different weapons (they all look uniquely different in battle when you equip them), armor, and accessories. The weapons and armor usually only affect your attack and defense, but some armors will raise your attack/magic attack in addition.
How do you mean "do anything"? The different accessories prevent certain types of status effects, they raise different stats, things like that. Aside from that, stat raising is about the only thing I can remember from the game's equipment. There is one thing you get from the hidden boss of the game (Culex), the quartz amulet, that halves damage taken by one character and increases all the damage they give. There are a few interesting items like that in the game.
At any rate, it's a great game! And to add to previous discussion, I never could get into earthbound. I just didn't really know what I was supposed to be doing. Maybe if I try playing it again now I'll be able to get into it..? I was a little bit younger when it first came out
is it like paper mario? tose are some of the greatest rpg's ive ever played. this game looks a little wierd, but i would get it if its good
i never heared of the game till my friend told me and he let me try it its fun i liked it and can't wait till its on vc
this game is a lot like final fantasy when it comes to battles, except much better. and the game kills all other SNES games(except earthbound).
To pApEr y0sh!:
You're right, the game IS a bit weird, but thats one of its many charms. SMRPG is a lot shorter than the paper mario games, but it's funny and there's a lot of cool characters and bosses.Theres also a lot more replay value to keep you playing even after you have beaten it.
Nintendo of Japan's official Virtual Console page has listed a confirmed release date for Super Mario RPG of Tuesday the 24th of June 2008.
Source: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/vc/lineup.html
This date goes without saying. The game's release was already confirmed for June 2008, and as Japan's Virtual Console releases are every Tuesday, and the 24th is the last Tuesday of this June, well, what more needs to be said?
I can only hope now that a European release will soon follow.
i will definitely get this game and train all day leveling up it will be my first snes rpg. any idea when this will come out in canada and usa?
OK, so they turned a side-scrolling action game into a turn-based RPG? That's more than just a spin-off, it's just madness.
(Please, no one respond by saying "But this is SPARTA!")
way better than paper mario, its the original mario rpg... ive always wondered why mallow and geno never made any further appearances after this game?
my cousin use to have this on his hacked xbox along with a bunch of other games lol anyhow that might be how i found out about this game
Mallow and Geno were Square created characters so there would have been licensing issues.
i cant believe its out for japan, i feel so happy
just the fact that its out
its a dream come true
Must... Buy... SMRPG...
You'll be even happier when its out in America. Heh. Watch it be out in the U.K. this week three days before America. That would make quite a fun discussion topic.
Thats something we need in europe: MORE RPGs for VC. Cant wait to download this game
do you guys think this is coming out this monday?
i really hope so
ive been playing mario galaxy a lot to distract myself til monday lol
Never count on the VC. It seems we're constantly being disappointed. Never get your hopes up. It will come when it comes. It really is sad that we have to have such a negative attitude about the VC.
yeah storm, its the fact that 2008 has just been so cruel when it comes to VC. its really a shame, because 2007 was incredible
tomorrows the big day. if it doesnt come out, im going to boycott VC
Finally I will be able to play my favorite game of all time again and also play the first game that Geno appeared in since people forget or just didn't play it that he had a cameo appearance in mario and luigi superstar saga as the instructional thing for the arcade machine with the scale.
@ Hero10x: Let the boycotting begin, =P
I'm not going to be all competitive about this game with regards to who gets it first for the Virtual Console out of the US and Europe, as if it's released for one then it's bound to be released for the other soon after. If it's released in Europe first, great, as I live in the UK! If it's released in America first, then surely that means that a European release will soon follow.
I just hope I can get a Classic Controller in time for its release...
Regardless, at least said controller will make Super Mario World less of a waste of Wii Points (for the record, I consider Super Mario World to be epic, but controlling it using the GameCube controller is a nightmare, plus I've still got my friend's GBA copy to play on for the time being).
Can Nintendo please just release this somewhere other than Japan? XD
I want this game bad. 'Nuff Said.
My friend thinks this'll be next week. if so, then it should be amzing as the wiiware game is Strongbad (according to some sites.) Neither is confirmed.
EDIT: Wow...we got neither in July...thats freaking sad...
I love this game for the simple fact that they made the whole Mario/Bowser struggle out to be as week as it really is most of the time. (SMG is a HUGE exception to this though)
Smithy is likely to this day the single most evil creature Mario has ever faced. And it's because of THAT that I NEED this game again!
I seriously doubt Mario will ever find himself a better villain...
Does this game have anything like the badges in Paper Mario? Anything like the cooking system? Those were the best things about Paper Mario, and minus those it's Kind of a deal-breaker, as I went back to Paper Mario recently and it wasn't as fun as I remembered. It's good to hear that the characters are funny and it's not too long, but from what I've seen, there's better things I'd rather spend $8 on than this, unless somebody could prove to me otherwise.
Oh, and I know the equipment thing has already been covered, but every RPG has that. The badges are part of what made Paper Mario so unique, besides the leveling system and battle system, and without it it would be just your average RPG game, and I really don't like the standard stuff.
If my memory isn't COMPLETELY failing me I do believe this is just a standard outing...
But what this game does have is truly a rare thing in the Mario universe...
Epicness... This game not only has a plot, It's a damn good one!
It's funny enough to keep it light at times but for the most part this is the darkest situation mario has ever been put into so far...
And as you progress through this game you really do get a sense of heroism with the cast of characters that otherwise normally just dose not seem like it belongs in a Mario game...
It's in every way in it's own right just as good as the early Final Fantasys... (Not completely in the same way of course! But just as good non the less!)
@Surgical Precision
Yah, see, there's my problem, I never liked the early Final Fantasy games(never played the new ones but the don't seem any better), the story was too dull("Epic" to me means "dull"), and combat was even worse. Paper Mario was like the exact opposite of Final Fantasy(at least to me), and I was really hoping for something more along those lines for this game. I guess I'm gonna pass on this and wait for Earthbound, or buy Beyond Oasis, that looks cool.
I want this game SOOO bad! I never got to play this game
i recently played smrpg and was dissapointed when i found that while it is a pretty entertaining rpg it isnt nearly as deep in accessories, sidequests and plot as it is built up to be, because of this it lacks the replayability of other snes rpg's and therefore i believe smrpg is very overrated and is easily beaten out by final fantasy 3,4 and chrono trigger..three games which are much deeper and worthy of your wii points be it that your willing to wait for their release. although smrpg isnt as good as final fantasies 3,4 or chrono trigger that doesnt mean its a bad game just a bad rpg, i can see how many die hard mario fans may still enjoy it, nothing against diehard fans of the game i just humbly suggest that anyone who hasnt played smrpg should give it a try on an emulator before spending your points based on everyone elses opinion and the aura surrounding smrpg.
@Mickeymac
Well then you're probably right... I still wouldn't up and flat out dismiss the game, But if that drawn-out tail of good vs evil isn't your thing I can't blame ya...
I have never been a huge RPG fan ether... I've never liked any of the FF installments enough to play them completely more once... (Sometimes even just beating the game)
And the List of JRPG games that I have played several times over is vary short...
Chrono Trigger, Radical Dreamers, And Crono Cross (Not just because I had to see all the endings, They are just THAT good.)
Grandia 2, Skies of Arcadia, And Lunar Legend (Legend because I missed the better PSone port and its sequel... @#$%&!)
And finally... Super Mario RPG... Why?... Because at the time it was FREAKING MARIO in a FREAKING RPG!
And also... Giving the porky little plummer and his friends souls (Character depth & in some case's backstory) made me feel closer to the series then I had felt in quite a long time... And sense...
Actually Rosalina's backstory in SMG was the most recent time I actually "connected" with a Mario title... But that's a vary shallow experience compared to what we got with SMRPG...
EDIT@bosshog
Really!?...
Maybe my memory's much more sweet then the truth but... I can't imagine thinking that...
@Surgical Precision
Wow, that's more than me, here's all the ones I've played:
FF 1 and 2,
Every pokemon game ever made
Almost Every Mario RPG
Mega Man Battle Network 6, Mega Man X: Command Mission
Zelda II
Kingdom Hearts, which led to:
Star ocean 3
Rogue Galaxy
Lunar Knights
Summon Night: Swordcraft Story
Tales of Symphonia
Actually, that's a little more than you huh? But then again, most of them aren't incredibly deep like all the ones you played. Honestly, I'd say you are a fan of RPGs, I however always tend to think RPG=boring, though I'm trying to get out of that. Also you've beaten all of those games. With the exception of the pokemon ones(if you count getting all of the badges "beaten"), one of the Mario ones, and Kingdom Hearts(I forced myself to beat that one), I haven't beaten most of those.
Edit: Oh, that was your Replay list?! How many RPGs do you own if you're not a "huge fan"?
@Mickeymac
...
Well by "own" only seven right now unless you count the Zelda's... (I don't tend to keep the games that I don't REALLY like)
But if you mean played then...
Zelda's if you count them (All but Minnish Cap)
Pokemon's - Blue, Yellow, Silver, Crystal, & Emerald (I'm waiting for the complete editions now instead of buying the first two)
Kingdom Harts 1&2 As well as Chain of Memorys
Final Fantasy's (Main Series up to 9 skipped 3 though, As well as Tactics & Tactics Advice 1 )
Chrono Series (If you can call it a series, Seeing as Radical Dreamers is more or less a Chrono Cross bata)
Lunar Series (Only Legend & Dragon Song before I set it on fire...)
The Paper Mario's as well as Super Mario RPG
And Finally Grandia 2, & Skies of Arcadia (Original & Legends)
Most of them I've beaten but it's only the ones that I mentioned earlier that I've actually completed...
Well, it's Thursday night, only an hour and 45 minutes to go before this week's Virtual Console release, and this time it will actually be a Virtual Console release and not a WiiWare release. It's not as though today is particularly special, but there's always a tiny chance that SMRPG will appear. I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, as there's no need for it, but you never know.
I'm not trying to epichype it or anything like what happened two weeks ago, I just thought that it was worth mentioning.
There's nothing. Either this week's release is late, or this is the epitome of fail.
@Mickeymac
Also one more thing, Don't be fooled... That list doesn't really make me big a fan of RPG's...
You just fail to seem to comprehend just how much free time I have...
Wow, I was just about to say that you're still more of a fan than me, unfortunately, my internet crapped out, so it didn't go up.
I think you fail to see how far in denial I am.
But ya, considering these little exchanges we've had for the past couple of days, I can at least say you have as much free time as me...which is a lot...
Anywho, I found a rom of SMRPG. It wasn't bad, okay, ya know. The Isometric view made platforming frustrating beyond belief on the computer, but other than that it was alright. I'd still personally take Paper Mario over this, but considering I have so many fond memories of playing PM, nothing ever looks quite as good.
At the very least I can say I know why it's been hyped so much, if ya catch my drift...
Oh, and Skies of Arcadia, thinking about trying that some time. Which one should I go for, the original or Legends?
Thanks for the feedback mate, I was probably going to go with the Dreamcast version anyways, so I'll have at least one RPG on the thing.
Also, by denial, I mean I don't hate RPGs as much as I think I do, as well as convinced that nothing could be as good as Paper Mario.
Anywho, I don't like to play roms for more than 5 minutes so I'm gonna have to ask, do you use the hammer in the overworld? That's another thing I always loved in Paper Mario, and it would be cool to see it in this game. Still no word on an item creation system huh? To be honest, If a game has one, and is easily usible, it automatically becomes one of my favorite games. Oh, and at any point are there any sort of choices that effect you at a later point in the game? That alone would give me incentive to play the game multiple times, especially since it's so short(as far as I know, a lot of games give you choices at the beginning that effect more or less how the game turns out, but the games are usually so long that it's not worth trying all of the different outcomes). Paper Mario sort of had it but it wasn't to big, at least not enough to warrent a second play through on its own, so I'm not expecting anything too big from this either, so long as it's something.
I can't remember perfectly but I think he only used the hammer outside of battle during platform based minigames...
And I don't recall any items creation systems unfortunately... But then again I don't recall anyone outside of Japan getting those back then anyway...
And finally last but not least... Yes & No...
You in true to squaresoft games of the day fashion only had the option to ignore or complete side quest... Anything on the main plot line trail was unavoidable & Linear... (Except for maybe how it's told to you & or how much you wanted to hear about it)
@Surgical Precision
Thaks, yes & no answers was basically what I was asking for. Too bad about the Hammer and Item thing, though. Are you able to spin around at will? There are three things that I always did in Paper Mario: Spin around, cook, and swing the hammer around randomly - with out those, the funness level went down a whole 90%.
Oh well, I'm sure I'll find something to amuse myself. Any suggestions?
Edit: Oh, and Ground-pounding, I did that a lot, too. Can you do that in this game?
Does this game involve properly-timed button presses in combat like M&L or Paper Mario, or does it use the old "choose attack and watch" method? That's why I've love the other Mario RPGs, the combat's actually involving.
Edit: Nevermind. Drake answered my question. Now I really want this game! It's the only Mario RPG I haven't played!
@Mickeymac
Mario's "Butt Stomp" ground pound move didn't come along until SM64 so no unfortunately not... Trying to remember if the spin jump was in here or not though...
Well unfortunately at the end of the day there are only two things you can do to enemys outside of combat...
You can jump on them resulting in a battle that gives you the lead advantage... (OR just to torment the village people)
OR... As you could see in that video you can get a Power Star that instantly kills anything you hit or anything that hits you... (Which will usually up your level quite a bit)
Other then that & minigames (Which often do things differentially) your stuck doing things in battles...
But that really isn't a bad thing, This game has a wonderful combat system that's as fun as it is zainny. (Just like the Paper Mario's & the Mario & Luigi series)
And giving a character one weapon instead of another will result in a completely different way of fighting...
@Surgical Precision
Good to hear. I can assure you, I will be tormenting the village people every hour, on the hour. Nice to hear about the weapon thing, too, even if it is more or less standard.
I actually can't think of another question...oh wait, here's one: Are there or are there not Ninjas. I can't remember which Paper Mario had ninjas, but if this or any game has ninjas, its awesomeness increases tenfold!
I gotta say, my opinion of this game has really improved. At first, I assumed it was a generic RPG with Mario on the cover, but now I see it's truly a game worthy of the Mario monacre(if it's spelled wrong, blame the lousy spell check)! I really got to learn to keep a more open mind about these sorta things!
I don't recall if or if not there are ninjas in this game but I do know there's something much better!
Axem Rangers! The evil spoofs of the power rangers!
And one of the most unforgettable groups of villains in any video game EVER!
Anywhoo... Good to hear you'll at least give this game a chance!
@Surgical Precision
Power Rangers? As in the original Power Rangers?! As in "Still have their F'n poster on my freakin' wall" Power Rangers?!?!?! This is going to be the awesomest game I've ever played!!!
On, and I downloaded the Chrono Trigger rom, it was pretty fun, especially when I got to name the characters(it was like I was 10 again!), and several of the names wound up being funnier than expected! I was still a little annoyed by the battle system though, since there's no way to actively block, though, when they get hit, there is an animation of the characters blocking(or at least it looked like they were blocking), so that sort of made up for it. All in all, I can see why you liked it so much, right up there with the Mario RPGs in termsof funnness and comedy(intentional or otherwise).
One question though: Should I get the PSone remake, or wait for the new DS remake?
Gah!...
Um... Well actually that has nothing to do with why I liked it at all... (Though I really do love the real time battle system especially later in the game)
But please for the love of god don't make fun of anything like that... It'll completely ruin the game for you later on when the story gets REALLY GOOD...
And I'd wait for the DS port... Rather if or if not it has the anime couldn't possibly make a big enough difference considering all you do lose in the PSone version...
Trust me on that... I've had them both at one point & if my SNES Cart hadn't died I would have snapped this PS disc into tiny little fragments LONG AGO...
The Anime (While fun to watch) doesn't even sync up right with the in game events...
It's much MUCH better to just play the SNES version & watch the Anime afterwards...
That or just wait & see what they're gonna do with the DS port...
The original paper mario had the Ninjakoopas, but other than that I don't really remember any ninjas in Mario RPGs.
@Mr. Cheez
Thank you, I knew one of the Mario RPGs had Ninjas. I'll be good with the Axem Rangers. They sure liked to parody a lot of shows back then, huh?
@Surgical Precision
Don't worry, that's only a habit I have with roms, demos, and other things that are considered "temporary". When I get the real game, I'll treat it with a lot more respect. Plus. my mother would kill me.
And, I didn't know about the Anime part, though I didn't read into it. Really I was planning on getting Final Fantasy Chronocles simply because it's both DS remakes(CT & FF4) in one, and at a cheaper price than either. I'll still wait, but I'm going to have to read into it before I buy.
Oh, and why I said you liked it, I ment the combat and the story, not the renaming of characters.
I'll help you out with that...
For one FF4 on the ds looks absolutely nothing like it's 2D original used on FFC, The game has been completely remasterd into 3D with tons of cut-scenes...
We don't know enough yet about CT on the DS, But it's PSone outing suffers from massive amounts of lag with literally EVERY SINGLE THING you do!
Touch an enemy - wait 4-6 seconds, Go into the minu - 7-8 seconds, ect...
And WORST OF ALL the original game still has to this day one of the greatest sound tracks out of any game ever made...
And wouldn't you know it, All those wonderful melodies now sound as crisp & clear as a blind mentality retarded hippo getting it on with a truck!
The only really good thing about it is the Anime opening, cut-scenes, And Ending... Most of which while great don't even go well with how there placed in the game...
If they're for some god forsaken reason not in the DS port you can easily find them online with minimal effort... (Don't watch any of them now of course)
Oi! Thank ya Mac, ya done saved me a lota trouble, ya did.
Anywho, thanks, you've been a geat help to me on several topics these past couple of days, and opened me up to new experiences in the process. I really can't thank you enough!
LOL
No problem!
But hey if you ever find yourself with a copy of SSBB look me up around here!
...
.... I'm board!...
There is a forum for that, Surgical Precision. I'm there too, but to be honest, I stopped playing SSBB. It happens to me with all of the Super Smash Bros. games - they can't seem t o hold my attention for more than a few weeks.
Here's the link:
http://www.vc-forums.com/brawl-friend-codes-exchange-t7743.html
Well damn... That's to bad... It's actually one of my favorite fighters...
But hey ya like what ya like right...
It's my favorite too, I just don't play it too often(my favorite Wii game is Super Mario Galaxy, but I haven't played that in ages). I just have A.D.D. and a fickle personality(I hope I said that right and not a way that makes me sound crazy). Who knows, maybe I'll get back into it soon. Just not at this moment.
I hope Nintendo releases this game soon. I can't play the rom anymore since it turns out they're illegal, and now I'm just left craving for more.
Sorry... I thought you knew that... All roms are illegal in the US unless there of games that aren't "Reddilly Available"... (Don't think I spelled that right)
That's the one & ONLY exception for us in the US as intellectual property laws give the copyright holders power over other laws that might be in effect...
For example the "You have the right to one backup copy" law is null & void because Nintendo doesn't want to allow it...
The game Radical Dreamers (Chrono Series) is a perfect example of a legal rom that you can download in this country because there is absolutely no other way at all to obtain the game beyond downloading the rom...
But aside from a handful of games like RD, Downloading roms is for the most part 99.9% illegal over here regardless if you own the original or not... With the only other exception being homebrew games... (Made by fans)
Anywhoo... Super Mario Galaxy is epic isn't it! I've gotten all 242 stars in that game... The bonus Pictures are a nice touch...
Though that said I still can't help but feel like a complete & total dork each time I see them, After all I did play the game way WAY too long just to get them... Though I suppose not even half as long as SSBB at this point...
Yah, I did know at one point in time, but I forgot, then I learned that lesson again, after I got an infraction in the forums for letting slip about the Chrono Trigger ROM.
And yes, Galaxy is epic, almost daunting, in fact. I spend so much time at a single stage, trying to find everything in one area, that I never make progress, and I just get bored. That's a problem I've had with all the Mario games, yet I still love them.
I think we've answered every possible question, anybody would have about this game, and I challenge anyone to come up with an actual, factual question about Super Mario RPG that hasn't already been answered.
And yes, it was made by square who are now Square Enix.
And Yes, this game is turn-based, with timed button-presses. I think those questions were answered earlier, anyways.
@Surgical Precision. Super Mario Galaxy is amazing. So far I got all 120 stars as Mario and am now playing the game again as Luigi. So how do you get the 241st and 242nd stars?
@Mickeymac. I have a bit of a fickle personality myself. I have ADD too, but you probably know that from the Lostwinds review. Ever notice how in some articles, my posts tend to contradict themselves?
And about the Friend Code exchange forum, I'm there! I could use some friends. I thank ya muchly for the link, Mac!
man, this game is awesome! i'm getting it right away when it comes out! 6/5 =]
@Mr.Cheez
Thanks, at least now I know I'm not alone in this boat
And your welcome!
Man, if we don't see this game soon, I'm going to have to go back to the other Mario RPG's and that's going to make it a lot harder to get into it once it does finally come out.
@Surgical Precision
For some reason I always think of the VG Cats strip Like a Sturgeon when ever I read your username.
Still, for months I have had the ROM on my computer, and still yet I refuse to play it (aside from loading it and watching the demo, mainly because I didn't have a good USB controller handy).
I am still looking towards the day that this comes out for VC, as if I play it now, my experience will be tainted and spoiled when it finally hits on the Wii, plus I'll have to start over fresh.......
It's Monday for me now, and when it's Monday for America, I do hope that you guys get this game for the Virtual Console, 'cause if you do, then that'll surely mean that the European release will follow. Only time will tell. Good luck!
Chances are you blokes across the lake will be getting it before it arrives in the U.S. of A., but we sure are hoping.
@StarDust
Yeah, I can't say I recommend using the keyboard for this one.
I gotta say, this experience has really turned my hatred of RPGs around! After I tried this, I tried Chrono Trigger and loved it, now I can't wait to play the DS version. I also tried Breath of Fire II, and I loved it especially the story and characters, and I intend on including it in my next VC purchase. Heck, I even tried Final Fantasy again, and this time I liked it, since I was able to imagine up some interesting dialogue, since the characters themselves seem to speak nary a word. I guess I got to get that Dawn of Souls thing again, since the PSP remakes were a bunch of rip-offs.
One question though, do other people do what I do when playing an RPG, imagining their own dialogue for the characters, or sometimes even whole story sequences? Or is that just a personal quirk? I'm just curious, you know in case I'm crazy or something.
Edit: I mean NA, sorry.
I've been waiting since the day the Wii came out for this game (I sold my SNES to get an N64). I love RPG's and the Paper Mairo series so yeah. I bet the reason this hasn't come out is because Square wants to charge us fifty bucks for it. I know they are greedy and don't care about their fans and I'm a Square fan.
glances at username/avatar
@Bahamut ZERO
I'm not sure Square has much control over that, plus it was released in Japan already, so it would be kind of pointless to charge $50 for a game people can get for $9. I just think that Nintendo knows that people want it, and probably hold out purchasing other VC games for it, so they're waiting until people give up on it before they do release it. To bad that by know, I don't care about it anymore, and probably won't get it even if it is released...okay, who am I kidding, I'll be buying this just like the rest, because I'm just that weak...
The music in this game is LEGENDARY!
This game KICKS ASS! I love the music, the game is well played and the graphics are AWESOME!!! I heard that a sequel may be made for the DS but with more Final Fantasy Characters.......SWEET! They had better put Geno in there, I know they will if they make it. I really can't wait for this game to come out, I need wii points NOW!
Well, I finally gave in and fired up the old [gasp!] emulator on my computer. I recently purchased a PS2 Dual Shock and a EMS2 USB adapter, exclusively for playing games on the computer, seeing as how I don't even own a Playstation. Far better retro controller than any cheap junk PC gamepad on the market, in my opinion. So far as I got, it seems like a really solid, enjoyable game. I got whupped by the Hammer Bros at the end of the woods several times, so I finally just walked around randomly crashing into (and beating up) enemies until I leveled up a few times. Then I finally defeated the Hammer Bros, started exploring the village, hit the save block, and spoke with the chancellor (screenshot #3), when I accidentally hit the RESUME STATE key by mistake, reverting back to the spot right before I first met the hammer bros. I exited the program and reopened it; my save data was reverted back as well. Now I don't feel like beating the stupid hammer Bros all over again. Shame on me for falling into temptation
I will say this, however, on the battle/exp/level system: The mechanics of the game engine seem so perfect in every way, that it makes "Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time" [GBA] seem highly flawed in comparison - This will definitely be an instant download when it is finally released!!!
wtf, the hammer bros are easy to beat
use 2 jumps on one of them and bam he's dead
and just use regular attacks on the other
@JODIsBack
It also involves a lot of level grinding, which he went through. Then he accidentally hit a wrong button, and now he(she?) has to redo all that level grinding all over again, and he( could be a she) doesn't want have to go through all that again.
Ive been waiting for this game since the Wii VC started. I remember playing this game as a kid. i loved it! can't wait for it to come to america
i love geno the most look at my icon that is geno in anime form!!!
i also agree with carson i can't w8 4 it for america
i also played it as a kid i played it from the age 5 to 11 it never got old
I'm Curious now on when this will come to the states because this is an OSFC rating only right now. I was looking up what it stood for and the only thing that I was able to find was stuff on the Austrailian ratings system and nothing to do with the esrb
"remove the nintendo characters, you're left with a very generic rpg." Well yeah, but that's what makes this game fun, is that its Mario...in an RPG
WOOT for europe finally legally getting their hands on this as of tonight
Well it's finally here for European gamers. It's about time! : )
Maybe it won't be long before the US gets it.
Dang i wish we got this with Mega-man that woulda
been sweet
@Corbie
Freaking hoping so!! Gotta get anutha card when it does!
Wow, after reading the review, I think I gotta give this another go. I figured after games like Chrono Trigger and Paper Mario I would've grown out of SMRPG, but it sounds...alright. Though I think I should give the Rom another go instead, so I don't waste my money. One question though, how can it be better now than it was then?
@Pocketim
Don't bother, it'll bore you out of your mind, if you're talking about the original. Actually, I liked it, but only because dreamt up my own story and dialogue while I was playing it to keep me interested. The game itself, well, after you play SMRPG, it doesn't hold up. I'd suggest Chrono Trigger, that one was pretty good. Or FF4(hold shift you get FF$), if you're dead-set on Final Fantasy.
Finaly, a good Square game ^^ (Actraiser was a game by Enix) I did never have the ability to finish it, but this might be my chance to .... hey, what?? 900 wii-points? It is worth it, but why do I have to pay 100 points more than what they pay in USA?
The Reason why it's a 100 points more is because of the "import" tax because it was never released in Europe
It's strange but such is life
Just found out this was released today, downloaded it straight away. First VC download in about a year!
Hmmm... the review and the video intrigue me to want to check this game out... One day I suppose...
OMG It's finally here!!!
Hurray!!
This is really one of my favourite games ever. It's not that great of an example of an RPG but that's part of the charm - If you grind like 2 or 3 levels at the start of the game (Which only takes like 10 minutes) you never have to fight another enemy aside from bosses again if you're good.
@ Mickeymac: It's a bit unfair to warn other people away from the Final Fantasy games just because you don't like them, =/
That's like me trying to convince everyone not to play anything with 'WWE' in the title, =S
I take it this is still running 60Hz? Just wanted to check... I still remember buying this in the US back in Xmas 96 along with SFA2. Happy days...
@ Pocketim: I'm lost in the Forest Maze, XD
The GBA/DS remakes are definitely worth a shot if you're after a serious RPG. FFIV is considerably more difficult than V and VI, and VI is my favourite of the three. I haven't played the DS remake of III enough to really be able to comment on it, although graphically it's beautifully reminiscent of FFIX, :3
If you have access to the DS remake of FFIV then that's a champion choice if you ask me. Either way, the remakes are the best of the bunch. Sans FFIX, the Final Fantasy games from VII onwards begin to decline in compairson to VI and earlier if you ask me.
i kept following the mushroom's directions of left, left, straight, right... following Geno when I see him. i had to take a guess once or twice though.
is it me, or did anyone else notice Zelda dungeon music during one underground section?
Bass: The Toad's directions are not related to Geno. Follow them from Mario's perspective for a secret area.
G-D, I haven't been making friends at all this week.
@Myself
Never ever post about anything that has to do with Final Fantasy. Ever.
In any case, I tried the Rom once again, and now I can't wait for this game to come to NA!
Actually, I came to mention that I was a little unfair towards FF, it's not bad in any way, I just figured he may not enjoy it as much as SMRPG. I shouldn't have discourged somebody like that, sorry.
"As much as I love the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi titles, there is nothing like the original Super Mario RPG."
You're absolutely right. Super Mario RPG was the first and is still the best.
An extremely enjoyable RPG. At the time of writing i have just got one of the 7 stars and now up to the underground sewers bit. Man this is better then FF 7. (and people said that was one of the best RPGs) ? :I
Anyone know how many blocks of Wii memory this game requires for download? I'm virtually tapped out and I don't really want to remove any of my previous downloads.
Thanks in advance.
64 blocks.
Thats a lot compared to all of the other SNES games.
When this comes out in USA it will take over the 1st spot on the Popular VC Games list big time.
@pikmin95: What SNES Games have you downloaded so far? All my SNES games have 50+ blocks, the winner is DKC2 with 95 blocks
"My predicted/hopeful release date for all regions:
Japan: June *
US: July/August
Europe: (Sorry, you'll probably have to wait for Hanabi) * "
Well I got 2 outta 3!! Go me! Now gimme the game paleeze!
I can understand why Europe got this before America simply because Europe did not receive a PAL version, but why did Japan receive this MONTHS ago? Are they always first?
I somehow remember an article on the net, I believe it was IGN stating that Mario RPG was confirmed to be released last year...? I don't mind waiting, especially for a game this good, but the wait is beginning to get a little ridiculous.
why hasn't america gotten this yet?! this is by far one of the best RPG's in mario's rpg games. it presented an original story for once. and it's a game that gets better as you get older. when i was a kid i didn't get half the jokes until i played it a couple more times. so for me playing this again would be a blast from the past and never wanting to leave for quite a while XD
You guys across the pond better be downloading and enjoying this. I stopped reserving my Wii Points long ago, and I wound up having a playthrough on the Homebrew Channel instead. I've played the game to death, and I'm sure thanks to emulation you guys have as well. After all, plenty of people here have played Terranigma.
Speaking of which, count on Terranigma coming here on VC before it ever arrives in Europe if they're going to keep this up.
@PuppetMasterKuruku
I hope so, I loved Terranigma(on Rom, anyway)!
Like i said when USA gets Super Mario RPG watch out because it will hit the Top 20 on day 1 even if it does not take the 1st spot away from Super Mario Bros. 3.I have a Wii Points Card Saved for a while until another Friend's Birthday ame he don't know this yet but if SMRPG comes out i'll be getting it.
Just in case they release this game on Monday, I'm gonna save my 2,000 points when I get them so I can buy this, Break In and some decent NES game, but hopefully they will release Mega Man 2 as well because I have the original as well as the Anniversary Collection.
This game is ace! I'm at the factory now. (spoiler) Just fought the huge big sword dude. I loves it!
@Bensei. On the contrary. Actraiser and Super Castlevania IV take up 102 blocks. I think. Both are around the early hundreds.
God, I'm hoping for a Labor Day US release! My hands started to twitch as I was watching that video! Whenever it comes to the US, I'll edit this space with my thoughts on the game. Like the music!
i hope we get this this month i cant wait 2 play this again this game is the $hit
This game Needs to come to the U.S. I remember playing it on my friends SNES, it was very fun
WE FINALLY GO IT!! YAY!!! I never got to play this back in the day and now I can finally play it. This def makes my Labor Day.
2nd to say we finally got it Yay my American Wii!
I think we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief knowing that we now have one of the greatest RPGs of all time.
I'm SO HAPPY I'M CRYING!!!!!! T_T ITS AWESOME!!!!! I can't wait to buy this game and listen to Geno's Forest Theme again
haha. I just got my SNES from home so I could play this game, and now it's released on VC! I think I'll just save my money for now and play it in the SNES since I have it here already...
So we're finally [FINALLY!] getting the one game we've been begging for a long time, or probably since Wii's release, and Nintendo's website confirmed it.
So what's next after this?
@GrandSparkser
hopefully Earthbound or my personal favorite Super Mario Kart within the next few months.
Time to let the complainers rest and practically everyone in the US to download Its awesome that its 800 in the NA. Anyone know US file size?
+1 VC game hooray
About freakin time Nintendo!
WOOO! I downloaded this the exact minute it came out. I love it! I just started obviously, but the game is good fun so far.
@Objection Blaster - It is 60 blocks. It is very nice size if you have to move games from SD to Wii all the time like I do.
i first VC game i bought that i already own the original version of
but i didn't even have to give it a second thought
Should i get this or sonic chronicles? But if I get this i need to buy a wii points card and a classic contoler which is 40 dollars. with the remaining wii points i would gift it to a friend who gave me ffcc mlaak. So is this game worth the 40 dollars?
@Gabe
Well, we should assume that those "extra 1200 points" are something you would gift to this friend in the future anyway, so that shouldn't count as part of the cost. And, the classic controller, I'm assuming would come in handy in the future for a multitude of other games. So for the sake of argument, let's say that you're going to end up using the controller for 4 games, eventually. So that makes 800 points ($8) for SMRPG and an extra $5 for the controller. On this game, you're spending $13 +/- $2-3 depending on how much you use the classic controller. Definitely, definitely, definitely worth that much
This was practically the first rpg I've ever played. If it wasn't for this game I may have never been turned on to the genre to begin with. I originally bought it because it was a Mario game, not because it was a rpg. I tended to play it safe and only buy games with familiar characters in them. Which means that I would have never even considered the likes of Final Fantasy 7 if this game hadn't turned me onto rpgs. Thanks Nintendo! Now just give us Earthbound.
5/5 no doubt. To any fellow European gamers who feel like 900 points is too much, I would have easily spent 1500 points on this game, and I played this thing like gangbusters when I was a kid back in 1996.
I am someone who really has trouble with the take turn rpg fighting. I never got into FF or anything like that but love mario and nintendo. For someone who is not a take turn fighting RPG fan is this something I should try out as a gateway RPG.
I know a few of you are questioning the block size, so here it is. 59 blocks for the file and 4 blocks for the save file.
I've been playing it all day. You know, I believe I spoke too soon. A mere day too soon, to be precise! XD
I been playin this game all day ever since i bought it on the wii shop channel as well... this game brings back memories and its a still cool game to have and play too!
I will get this when Alien Crush comes out, and buy a card then snatch them both
I was very excited when I saw this on the shop channel today. Very happy. I am satisfied, this and Super Mario Bros. 3 were all I really wanted. Of course, I am looking forward to Mega Man 9 also, and I kind of like EarthBound.
I am so happy this came out... I've been waiting for this to come out on the VC since I got my Wii .. this is such a wonderful and great game.. anyone who has not played this needs to give it a chance ASAP
and anyone who already has it, buy it anyway! like i did! haha
One game I never got to play but always wanted to. Now I have that chance. I know for a fact I'm gonna love it. Love Nintendo, Mario, Square, and RPG's. Right up my alley.
YES YES YES!!! This is one of my Favorite games of All time. The second I have the chance I'm downloading it!!!
As should everyone else!
One of my favorite SNES games ever!!!
Download this as soon as you get the points!
Um, has anyone else had this problem? I've made it to Booster's Tower and in the room after you turn into NES Mario there's a group of platforms. Two blue, two yellow and there's a Snifit on top shooting Bullet Bills. THE GAP BETWEEN THE YELLOW PLATFORMS IS TOO BIG! I cannot jump up to the top of this room. I cannot find any Walkthroughs that tell me this is a trouble spot. I am worried that this downloadable version of SM RPG is flawed somehow. Anyone else have this problem?
@Marvel_Maniac
I made it past that part easily. You're probably not jumping to the right platforms or at the right times. Keep trying.
This game rules. I don't really like RPGs like this, but it is great. Im hooked!
"You're probably not jumping to the right platforms or at the right times"
Yeah, I've tried to do this so many times that I'm considering never playing this game again. Which platforms are the "right" ones? There's two blue ones, then two yellow ones. The second yellow platform has too big of a gap. Did I miss something that moves it closer?
Yay! SMRPG just knocked SMB3 off the top tier of the totem pole for the #1 slot!
This is NEWS, folks!!!
Finally, we got it in North America!!!
I think I'll be getting this but I've never played it before.
Arg. I love this game, but forgot how insanely hard that silly race is at Yosther's Isle... x.x
Great game but not looking too good on a HD display. On a standard resolution television it seems to look a little better because it smooths over the graphical imperfections (almost like you're looking through a jelly-smeared lens).
Anybody else finding it really difficult to find Wii points cards for sale? I live in Saskatchewan and every place I go seems to have them sold out.
This game is such a blast. My son and I completed Paper Mario last year, and we've been waiting for something similar to come out on the VC. This is perfect. Great to see that it is number one on the sale list----hopefully, that will encourage Square Enix to release more games.
@zeeroid
a classic controller costs about 20 dollars (at least that's how much I bought it for) not 5, so I would assume the price to be higher. Even then though I would say this game is worth buying, I have it for SNES and have played it over probably 5 or 6 times and each time I enjoy it more and more. And the soundtrack will be stuck in your head for days on end!
I don't see the big deal about Geno and how everyone wanted him in Brawl. He doesn't seem to add much as another 3rd party character unlike the proposal of Mega Man but hey the Ice Climbers somehow made it in the roster again instead of Mewtwo.
You don't see the big deal about Geno? Are you serious?
If you can't see the big deal with Geno, than I've lost all hope in humanity.
Please excuse me, I need to have a cry...
I'll join you Badknux.
T_T
Thank you...
For someone who is not a take turn fighting RPG fan is this something I should try out as a gateway RPG.
Either this, or Paper Mario.
Personally, I think Paper Mario is better than Super Mario RPG in almost every conceivable way.
But both games will give you a good taste of turn-based RPG action.
both games are awesome and very fun to play but i think paper mario also is a bit better than super mario rpg, but mario rpg is a definite buy as well as paper mario
Super Mario RPG is better than Paper Mario IMO.
Update: for anyone confused on what happened to me, well, I'm an idiot.
I didn't read the user manual before playing and didn't realize you could run. My tricky spot? Solved by running and jumping. Thanks goes out to the guys on the vc-reviews forums! Thanks! Love this game!
I like Super Mario RPG more than Paper Mario, but not more than TTYD.
...My First, My Last, My Only!! >__<
Mario RPG Was My First RPG, It Is the Last One I've Played Recently, And It's One Of The Only That I Will Play Over And Over Again. <3
YES, just beat the entire game. This is definetly the best SNES game ever
My first RPG.
It's so cool that many people who didn't know RPGs or just hadn't give them a chance, got this game and found it enjoyable, I have the cartridge, and still dowloaded it, it's not the best RPG out there, but is a great mario RPG, the best for me, I simply love this game, it made me laugh and cry, it gave me some headaches, and a lot wonderfull moments too; it's a game that got a soul, just like Geno.
I'm jealous of all of you people who haven't played this yet.. Such a good game! I wish I could play it again for the first time!
i'm ashamed that i haven't played majority of the awesome snes games cause i was more of a sega fan back in the highly competitive 16 bit era. No doubt the snes was awesome but i have never really took advantage of my snes due to the lack of games for it. I took my chance with sonic, jewel master, wonderboy, valis, exclusive disney games rather than mario rpg earthbound chrono trigger super metroid etc.
My dad got me a sega genesis when i was about 3 yrs old and my first game was castle of illusion starring mickey mouse which i thought it was fantastic. I was at the scene when sonic first came out and it defined my playing career just like mario and zelda. Anyway now i have a chance to relieve those times thanks to the vc so i hope to see some more interesting retro games in the future.
I still have my SNES cart of this. It is still one of my favorite games!!
Love this game. I have some awesome Memories. the Forest music/ Culex/ the neat little game-boy game you can play. Yeah this is a must have. This game and Smart ball. (Snes) That's an awesome (But ignored) game.
Apologetically, I'm surprised... Super Mario RPG is still interesting and fun after all this time... I didn't like Paper Mario or Super Paper Mario, but Super Mario RPG is quite charming. Seeing as I missed this one the first time around, I'm delighted to have the chance to play this now!
Yeah. I like Mario RPG much better than Paper Mario. you just can't Beat that classic 1996 Mario RPG action!
Is this game anything like Superstar Saga? I loved that game. Not so much Partners in time, that one I just didn't think was as funny, and a little harder. But thats just me. Anyhoo...how much is this game like Superstar Saga?
Awesome, awesome game. This is probably the only mario rpg that comes anywhere near the depth of a Final Fantasy title. Trust me, there are a lot of side quests. This game definitely deserves a 5/5.
By the way, Sonic Chronicles is not that great. No offence Bioware, but next time don't put in all the Elite Beat Agents special moves. That was just lame.
Thanks Nintendo for finally releasing this masterpiece in Europe. As much of a Paper Mario fan I am, there is nothing like playing the spirtual predecessor to one of my favourite games. The graphics are flawless for 16 bit, in my opinion besting the graphical efforts of Donkey Country, and the gameplay is fantastic once one gets use to it, culminating in one of the most rewarding RPGs I have ever played. This makes me anticipate Mario and Luigi 3 for the DS even more.
It's THE best Mario RPG of all time... I don't know why but every time I play this game it's like if it was the first time that I play it...
"It's THE best Mario RPG of all time... I don't know why but every time I play this game it's like if it was the first time that I play it..."
That comment blew my mind, because that's the exact same experience I'm having right now replaying it. I think that it's because there's nothing quite like it. It's just like Squaresoft's old slogan which I wish it had kept--"Pick a world, we'll take you there."
Playing it again, I also started truly appreciating the platforming bits, which were at least as fun as, say, Sonic 3D Blast all by themselves. Though it's a traditional RPG for sure, it has a unique emphasis on action. And then, it's one of Square's epics, with memorable (new) characters and worlds connected by a story, with real laugh-out-loud dialogue. I keep hearing people say "Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana" as the SNES RPG triumvirate. But I think it should be "FFVI, CT, and Super Mario RPG." The pacing is perfect, a bit shorter than its contemporaries (though Chrono Trigger was also REALLY short. For me, 14 hours without a New Game+).
Super Mario RPG is just Grade-AAA escapism, with well-meaning humor and sincere writing in its story and artwork. With so much shock-value entertainment these days (including games) I hate to think someone missing out on something like SMRPG to take the edge off and just truly enjoy it. This came out in the middle of Square's heyday (which went on into the PS-one).
Paper Mario and M&L were different animals, but with Square missing for the story and the world-creating, artwork, and music, SMRPG's impact couldn't be repeated.
The Nintendo/Square mix resulted in one of the most successful joint-efforts in gaming.
Absolutely essential. Please don't miss it! 10/10
Good game but after u beat it theres really nouthing to go back to.
In responce to Iggy, not true, you can always go back to look for hidden items, hidden invisible ? treasure boxes, finding all the green frog coins, completing side-quests you missed, replaying minigames, (like the minecart one) among other things.
Anyways, this game's always been on "Most Wanted for VC" games lists for a reason. Considering this game marks Mario's introduction to the RPG genre, alot of features of this title were used in the RPG titles Paper Mario, and Mario & Luigi. (Such as the button-timed attacks, making it go beyond the typical automatic "menu selection" attacks of typical RPGs) So fans of those titles who missed out on this one are sure to enjoy this game. A must have for any Mario fan.
This was my first RPG game personally, and it's a great "first timer" RPG game, though Mario fans, (even ones who don't like RPGs) and RPG vetrans alike are sure to enjoy this game to, due to the eventfull storyline, dialogue, quirky sence of humor, (gatta love Bowser's pun in the begining) a likeable & unusual varried cast of characters, mix of Mario jumping platform action, (takes a li'l getting used to the 8-direction movement at first) not to mention new & classic Mario characters, monsters & bosses. (Including a very tough hidden boss known as "Culex.")
The soundtrack is bouncy at times, but very lovelly to, and suits the Mario world nicelly. (Even marks the return of the SMB3 World 1 map music.) The 3D-rendered isometric graphics may not be as smoothlly animated in comparison to the DKC series, but they still look nice for their day, and the visual effects for ally and enemy special moves are amazing.
Also the ending sequence is one of my favorites in all of gaming.
This will always go down as one of Mario's best games.
Finally finished this awesome game. For me I enjoyed this so much that it goes up there very close to my favourite games list. One of the best SNES games ever released, and judging by the readers rating i can see how people feel very strongly about this game as i am. Not to be missed.
It is great. Of all the Mario RPGs, this was the last one I played. And it's pretty cool! It's got easy controls, mingames, music, graphics, story, comedy, action, you name it, Super Mario RPG has it! When I played Paper Mario for the first time I was worried that it had taken a comedy turn to get away from the original mario. Turns out, they were just doing what worked! When I played this, I realized why Mario RPG's worked. They don't over complicate numbers. Think about it: Final Fantasy games involve your character doing like 1000-5000 damage and it's completely random. Mario RPGs are simple, but f'in awesome. This game makes Mario proud. 5/5
Although I enjoyed the game, I'd probably give it half a star less than Corbie. For what it is, it's very good, but compared to Paper Mario (a game I consider the best on the VC as of now), it seems outdated. I didn't like the humor as much; I felt Paper Mario improved the battle system; and I essentially just enjoyed the format of Paper Mario over SMRPG. I like SMRPG--I even consider it one of my best purchases--it just doesn't stack up to Paper Mario.
@Virus
My sentiments exactly!
I don't understand how to play this game. I'm fighting a big boss now, and I keep tit-for-tat:ing until my fireflowers run out, then I'm pummeled.
@2097
Level up! =]
pikmin95: Thanks for the tip. I was wondering if that was what I needed to do, or if I was just fighting wrong.
The reason I got this game was because the story seemed interesting and I like exploring.
However, I hate "grinding". I probably won't complete this game.
Don't forget to upgrade your weapons and armer too. It helped me with boss battles.
Just completed, and it was the most enjoyable, silly, touching and characterful game I've played for years. RPG snobs dismiss this game as 'RPG-lite'. I just wish there were more games like it! Better than Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga on GBA...almost!
I beat it today, and must say this is by far the worst game I own.
so you only own very few games then. if you call this bad then you don't know what a real bad game is.
@ Digiki
What did you dislike so much about the game? As your view is so different from mine I'd genuinely be interested to know.
just got it and this is one of my favorite rpgs ever!!
@Bass
I have about 170 games ATM.
http://backloggery.com/main.php?user=digiki
theres a list of them
@Golgo
The game play was slow, unchallenging, and unrewarding, on the final boss I blocked an attack with Peach and took 0 damage.
The music was mostly unimpressive and often unfitting.
Everything else was neither bad nor good.
@ Digiki
I'd agree the game isn't the most challenging in the world (for which I also love it, being 'time-poor', as they say), but I wouldn't call it slow or unrewarding. Seemed to rip along at a cracking pace, for me at least, especially battles which were over in a flash - perhaps by virtue of being quite easy, that's true. As for unrewarding...well if you're not into goofy humour, dopey characters and lunatic scenarios I suppose that may be fair. I haven't enjoyed a game this much for years, though.
As for the 'Peach-Block' criticism...you must time your blocking superbly! Hardly a criticism to level against the game, I'd suggest.
The combat is unintuitive with ambiguous timing required for many attacks, the animations take a while so battles slow slowly, after the first hour or two of the game you can pretty much just run from point A to the boss fight without needing to heal since random encounters pose little danger,
And the block is a perfectly good criticism, if a healer-type character can take 0 damage from most endgame foe's physical attacks, the battle mechanics are laughable.
OK...
...(Mallow still beats Geno, though)...
The forest maze was so boring that i stopped playing this game for a month! After i beat the forest maze, i felt like playing this game again, and i must say this game is good, but i (in my opinion) like Paper Mario more than Super Mario RPG.
im a big fan of the paper mario titles so i'll give this one a go
I was ecstatic when this game came out. I have it downloaded and have gotten up to Booster Tower. Bowser is awesome!
My next Download along wth Shining Force 2 and Pac-Man. I can't wait to play this game.
This really is an excellent game.
I ranked it as #4 on Mario's greatest of all time list.
My full list can be found here:

This game pushed the limits of its time, and in my book, is one of the best games that has ever been made. The plot, the RPG layout, and the friendly Mario characters bring something special to it that most video games cannot compete with.
I would recommend buying this on VC if you haven't already, you'll enjoy every second of gameplay (well, except for maybe the forest maze...)
YES!! i have this... of cours i do, if you love RPG's you have to have this.. it's a great game, it has a serious plot, but wherever you go funny stuff still happens...
ive also playedpartners in time (DS) and i hope that there will be a mario RPG for WII sometime, since im not so fond of the paper mario series.
Hmmm should I get this...I am a big fan of RPG's and I loved the Paper Mario series.
What's sad is that this game never saw the light of day in Europe back in the SNES days
@Locke Cole: Get this. You'll fall in love with it like I did
is it just me or do the enemies seem to pick on Geno for some reason they just keep attacking him
Well I'm glad I got this game. It has to be one of the best RPG's I've ever played. The humour in it is great too.
Great game! I forgot how much I enjoyed playing. Must have imo
Download this if you haven't already.
Smithy is a great villain, much better than Grodus.
must be the patient type to like this game
Never played this game until I bought it. Probably one of the best games I ever played in my life. I like this better than Paper MArio for the N64.
It's not as good as Paper Mario or the later Mario RPG's, but Super Mario RPG is still every bit as hilarious as it was back then.
I bought this and loved it when it first came out. Probably the only rpg that i ever finished because I liked it enough to stick with it. I'm not usually an rpg fan, so maybe that's why i liked the easy access style of this one. In my opinion this is a VERY good game.
kingdom hearts pwn this game
Wow, a lot of comments. I'm the 250 commenter!
Anyway, I'm not sure about this game because I never played (mostly because I played the 3 Paper Mario games to death). But I'm not getting this unless if they fix the cable lead issue.
The game I saw It looks good to get. I like the characters you get and I'm thinking geno should be in the next super smash bro. I know there is a hardest optoinal boss in monstro town that nintendo had created the super hardest boss ever!
I loved this back in the day and I'm very excited that I can play it again. If anyone is debating on whether to get this or not, do it, you wont be disappointed.
i loved this game when i was small and i cant wait to play it agian
Man this game is AWESOME!!!!
Unreleased in Europe for the SNES. But now, we are very happy, because we've got it on the Virtual Console !! That's an excellent game !!!
seems really good should i get
Super Mario RPG legend of the Seven stars is a classic if you can play it. Do so.
This is the greatest RPG I have ever played. Simple as that. Get it, people!
I love it!
It's just..absolutely beatifull. :'D And the soundtrack is one of the best ever made.
Anybody do any theme playthroughs? I've beaten this game a lot and want to know some unique playthroughs I should try.
My brother is addicted to this game...
ME WANT GAME! GIMME! but really, loved mario and luigi bowsers inside story and im hungry for a different mario rpg!
I saw this gameplay of the game and it looks really great and I would really want to get this game and I might get it soon.
If you have an SNES, it's practically a requirement for you to get Super Mario RPG. Oh and A Link to the Past
