The unholy lovechild of Tekken and Pokémon, Pokkén Tournament caused quite a stir when it was first announced, yet Bandai Namco's one-on-one fighter exceeded expectations when it eventually arrived on the Wii U last year following a successful run in arcades. Given that almost all Pokémon games focus on monster-on-monster combat it's surprising that it has taken this long for a game of this type to appear, but the wait was more than worth it. However, Pokkén Tournament DX has a somewhat harder task ahead of it; launching on the Switch just over a year after the game graced the Wii U, it's another double-dip by Nintendo which follows in the footsteps of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. That re-release found favour on the best-selling hybrid system, but can this unique fighter pull off the same trick?
Let's assume for a moment you didn't play the original Pokkén Tournament on Wii U, and approach this enhanced title with a fresh pair of eyes. As you might imagine, it's very much the same deal as the original; you select a Pokémon and take to an enclosed arena with the express purpose of reducing the life bar of your rival to zero using a combination of attacks, grabs, counters and specials – known as "Synergy" moves in the game's parlance. Unlike Street Fighter or King of Fighters, moves in Pokkén aren't triggered by complex button-and-stick inputs, but by simpler commands, such as a particular button and a direction – this is from the team behind Tekken, after all. This means that even a relative novice is capable of diving right in and pulling off some pretty impressive combos with very little experience, which is a big bonus when it comes to accessibility.
That's not to say that Pokkén is overly simplistic or lacking in depth; in fact, in some ways it has more layers to uncover than your typical one-on-one fighter. The most interesting element of the game is the ability to toggle between two distinct combat phases – known as "Field" and "Duel". The former allows you to move in full 3D – not entirely unlike Power Stone or ARMS – and unleash ranged and homing attacks on your opponent, as well as dash and dodge in various directions in the hope of outflanking them. Getting in close and landing some heavy blows causes the phase to shift to Duel, which is more akin to your traditional 2D scrapper; you are fixed to a single plane of movement and your ranged and homing attacks become weak and strong attacks respectively, while your third attack option remains a signature "Pokémon" move. During both phases it's possible to jump using the B button, and you can guard by holding down the R trigger.
Also like Tekken, Pokkén features a two-button grab command. Press X and Y together and your character will attempt to grapple with their rival, and – if successful – perform a devastating throw. However, your opponent can smash through your grab attempt with a normal attack, so this tactic should be used wisely; if your foe is guarding excessively then getting in close for a grab is a solid option. The other two-button command involves counter attacks, which are accessed by pressing A and B simultaneously. This places your Pokémon in a brief state of resistance to normal attacks, and should your enemy try to land one during this period, it will trigger a powerful counter hit in response. This system creates a "rock, paper, scissors" arrangement where normal blows beat grabs, grabs beat counters and counters beat normal attacks. Mastering this arrangement encourages measured and methodical play, which lends the game further depth. Sure, you may win a few rounds by hammering the buttons at random, but a truly skilled player will know how to counter your onslaught by selecting the correct reply and watching your movements for openings.
But wait! That's not all. To spice things up even more we have Synergy Burst, which can be activated when your Synergy Gauge (topped by normal attacks) reaches maximum by pressing the L and R buttons together. During Synergy Burst your attack and defense are enhanced, while your life gauge regenerates a little – but it's the impressive Burst attack which really changes things up. This can be triggered once per Synergy Burst cycle – again, by pressing L and R – and unleashes a visually stunning special move that inflicts significant damage on your hapless foe, assuming they aren't successful in avoiding or blocking it. The fact that your Burst move doesn't require a complex set of input commands means that there's no barrier for newcomers, but the old-school fighting fans out there may feel that such incredible power should, by rights, be locked behind some kind of finger-popping button sequence. We sit somewhere in the middle; while it's sometimes annoying that your rival can fight their way out of a corner simply by pressing L and R twice, it forces you to raise your game in other respects, such as improving your timing, watching for moves based on animation sequences and generally controlling the arena to ensure you keep your opponent near the walls, which you can smash them against for increased damage.
If you assumed that was it, you were wrong. The final piece of the Pokkén puzzle is Support Pokémon, which are assigned in pairs and can be selected before you start a match. Support Pokémon can be called upon once your Support Guage is full, and come with a wide range of benefits. Some jump into the arena briefly to hit your rival with a ranged or melee attack, while others restore some of your life, increase your speed or even inflict a negative status effect on your opponent. You can only pick one Support Pokémon out of each pair per round, although you do get the option to alternate between them in-between rounds.
As you'd expect from a game of this type, much of Pokkén Tournament is spent locked in combat. A single battle mode allows you to fight against the CPU, while a practice option is ideal for getting a feel of the controls and mastering your combos. However, if you're playing solo then you'll want to focus on the Ferrum League campaign, which sees you working your way up the ranks and taking down progressively more skillful opponents while learning more about the malevolent presence of a super-powerful rogue Mewtwo. Online and local wireless play is also included, allowing you to take down human opponents using your own Switch console.
However, what's really special about the Switch version of Pokkén is the fact that it's perfectly possible to host a two-player contest on single system; the streamlined controls match the Joy-Con's button arrangement perfectly, ensuring that nothing is lost in the transition. You can choose to fight split-screen (which drops the framerate to 30fps) or opt for the same viewpoint for both players, and of course it's possible to use this mode in docked and handheld modes. Speaking of which, there's little in the way of performance differences between the two states; the resolution is limited to 720p in both docked and handheld modes, and offers an improvement over the Wii U original by delivering 1280x720 resolution, rather than 960x720. Sure, the visuals could be sharper all round – a complaint we also levelled at the Wii U version – but before we get too picky it should be noted that we're playing what was a home console game 12 months ago on a totally portable system without any loss of visual splendour. It seems churlishly to moan.
Local multiplayer on a mobile system isn't the only selling point that this new version of Pokkén can muster; it also comes with some new features which make it the superior option over the existing Wii U edition. Firstly, there are now five more Pokémon to fight with: Croagunk, Empoleon, Darkrai, Scizor and Decidueye, the latter being totally exclusive to the Switch version, while the other four have previously appeared in the arcade edition. As we noted in our review of the Wii U version, it's remarkable how differently each combatant plays – even the two variants of series icon Pikachu are noticeably unique – and it goes without saying that the new additions to the roster bring with them fresh tactics and strategies to master. It's also worth noting that instead of locking away certain Pokémon from the start – as was the case on Wii U – the entire line-up is available for selection from the moment you boot up on Switch. In some ways this is actually a disappointment as we found that the allure of gaining access to a new fighter vastly increased the longevity of Pokkén on Wii U, but if you're coming to the game as a veteran, it certainly makes things easier. As before, success in battle earns you coins – which can be used to customize your avatar – and skill points which level-up your Pokémon. Every time your 'mon passes a skill level you can assign points to four key areas, increasing their attack, defence, synergy and support talents.
Elsewhere, Pokkén on Switch offers other enhancements. There's a new three-on-three battle mode which calls to mind SNK's classic King of Fighters series, with the ultimate victor being the one who can fell all of their opponent's monsters first. Litten and Poppilo join the cast of Support Pokémon, and you now have more control over who you face online with special Group Matches. There are also Daily Challenges to keep you coming back to the game repeatedly; these task you with achieving a particular goal with a certain character, which – at the very least – encourages you to experiment with the cast. Finally, you can watch replays of past battles to spot weaknesses in your strategy or learn from more skilled players.
Whether or not all of these new elements add up to a convincing reason for you to double-dip if you've already played the Wii U version to destruction is a question that's perhaps best left to the individual player, but we imagine there will be plenty of Switch owners who never experienced the game when it originally launched last year, making this "definitive" package particularly attractive. We expect seasoned fans of the game will buy it regardless, if only to face off against a new legion of online opponents and get to grips with five new playable characters.
Conclusion
Nintendo is understandably keen to bulk out the Switch's year-one library of titles, so it's hardly surprising that we're getting re-releases like Pokkén Tournament DX – especially when you consider that the Wii U version didn't get the additional fighters that were introduced in the arcade. Pokkén is also a solid choice for Switch because it perfectly suits the console's local multiplayer ethos; the game's control scheme fits perfectly on a single Joy-Con, which means you can take the fight with you anywhere you wish. Whether or not the five additional Battle Pokémon and the light dusting of additional modes and features will be enough to convince existing Pokkén fans to upgrade so soon after the Wii U version remains to be seen, but taken on its own merits this is comfortably one of the the best fighting games on the Switch right now, and offers surprising depth, stunning presentation, brilliant offline and online multiplayer modes and bags of replayability.

The game is 960x720 in both handheld AND docked mode.
I hope good sales of this will convince Namco to bring "Tekken" to the Switch. I would not even mind if they re-released "Tekken Tag Tournament 2". As for this, the original ate many hours of my life, and this new DX version is already doing the same.
got mine pre ordered from Amazon.
never owned a Wii U so bring on all the games i missed that gen.
I'm so gonna skip this, they need way more than a bunch of characthers and new arenas to make me double dip
Double dip was a critical hit!
May have to cancel DBX2 for this...hmmn
Pass.
"Double Dip not very effective!"
I had bad luck with this game on my Wii U. I rented it through GameFly and for one reason or another, the disc would not read on my console. I loved the demo so I was disappointed that it wouldn't work for me. I blame my disc drive for being dirty, which infuriates me that Nintendo stopped selling the cleaning kit in their online store.
But anyway, I'll definitely be grabbing this after it releases. I'm stoked.
@memoryman3 @memoryman3 Actually it's 1280 x 720 in docked, I've amended the review to reflect this.
I wonder if they'll add DLC for the Switch version of Pokemon? Might be tempted if that happens.
How did Nintendo know that double dip is super effective against me!?
Great to hear.
But, if only I can use Sawk as playable character, not as a Cameo.
I adore the original and am super excited for this new iteration. I love fighting games and this is one of the best new games to come out in a long time.
Though I like Pokemon, I'm not much of a fan of Pokken. I'd still buy it though since I have friends and siblings who want to play it. I hope we get additional characters in the future. Some character choices are a bit weird for me too. I'm looking at you Croagunk! Toxicroak would have been better in my opinion.
If you own and adore the Wii U version, there isn't a lot to gain with this version unless you really like the portability and take-it-anywhere nature.
If you didn't own the Wii U version, you can buy this one blind as either a Pokémon fan or fighting game fan (or both).
I'm personally getting it later. Mario + Rabbids and Rayman Legends eat up my gaming hours, lol.
well i dont know, the Wii U version was just an average fighting game
Will be getting this on Friday for the kiddos. They love Pokemon (tv show/cards) and this will actually be their first Pokemon video game. cant wait to play it with them!! Happy it seems to be a winner
Speaking as someone who never purchased the wii u, I'm all for these ports to the switch. Even if I had bought the wii U, I'd probably still welcome these games due to the portability aspect of the Switch. Keep them coming, I'd like to see more of these, like Paper Mario, Zelda games, etc...
Getting this. Never got the original one so definitely will be buying. I've already got it preordered.
I'd love a steady stream of new playable Pokémon over the course of a year or so, a la ARMS. That's how you keep a fighting game fresh, especially when you've got 802+ potential playable characters to choose from.
If only the original wasn't so much ass.
I enjoyed the original but I'll just play it on the Wii U, no need for me to double dip. Same as Mario Kart.
Smash would be the only one I would consider. Even then, I would want a revamped online-- like Splatoon where there's a true way to move up the ranks.
Definitely upgrading!
I tried the demo on Wii U, and wasn't too impressed. But great review.
They could have easily added the new characters to the Wii U version, but once again, Nintendo are making you buy a whole new game for a few little extras, (cough) Mario Kart 8 (cough). No buy from me.
@jimbobolowskie you missed many essential titles which are likely guaranteed never to find their way to the Switch - SM3DW, Tropical Freeze and Pikmin 3 being but 3.
I'm a pokefanatic and I love fighting games, but I tried the demo and just didn't find this fun or exciting. Power to everyone that enjoys it though!
Good, now that this is released, it's just a couple of time left that Smash Switch is announced to not interfere with the sales of this game :>
Even though I only played the original for a month, I am excited for this.
Loved it on Wii U, will definitely be picking this up on Friday!
I got rid of the Wii pU barely after MK8 hit because it sunk and I've wanted a crack at this so no double dip here. Not sure it's worth $60 to me for what is there so research is needed. I figure since Nintendo never drops prices, ebay or a game trade route may be ideal. This looks though far more refreshing than stale smash bros which got boring to me after the series high Gamecube release.
I had this on wii u and it was ok for a short time but then got very bored of it. I have decided to go with xenoverse 2 instead on the 22nd. I am still yet to play it at all and it comes with the bonus xenoverse 1 story which is nice. will you be reviewing xenoverse 2 also?
As a Wii U owner who's been burned twice by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and now Pokkén Tournament DX, I will not be picking this up. The least they could have done is offer the new fighters on the Wii U version. Now, Nintendo is punishing early adopters of Switch games with an upgraded version of Snipperclips just six months after its original release! Of course, the writing on the wall would indicate we'll probably have a port of Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS on Switch in due time, but if there are not significant improvements and great amounts of additional content added, it will also be a no-buy for me.
Not impressed with the demo and not a big enough Pokémon fan or a fighting game fan to be in the target market.
Very good choice for a port though. Any Wii U port has a big target market one. People who will double dip for a portable version and people who didn't buy the Wii U (and that's a lot of people). This chimes nicely with eh multiplayer angle they're using to sell it. Nintendo should port everything they released on the Wii U that was any good. Good games deserve a bigger audience than is available on a flopped system.
It's a pass for me. Played the demo and its wasn't up my ally at all.
@NPC411 All Snipperclips owners will be able to purchase the extra content for the difference between the original and the upgraded version. They don't lose out any way.
The 'punishing' narrative is fun, but doesn't apply in this case.
@NPC411
"Nintendo is punishing early adopters of Switch games with an upgraded version of Snipperclips just six months after its original release!"
Owners of the original can buy the DLC for $9.99, making the total cost including the original game $29.98. The new version costs $29.99. Nobody is being punished.
If there was a promise of more characters coming to it, I'd consider it, otherwise it's price is too high for what is essentially a 5 character upgrade. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe does a better job.
@NPC411 How were you burned on the Wii U version of MK8? battle mode? I had the Wii U version and all the DLC and played the hell out of that game, worth every penny. The little extras on the port gives enough reason to buy it again, but it would be extremely strange for Nintendo to invest backwards, could they have done it, I guess, but they don't have to.
My copy arrives Friday along with Dragonball Xenoverse 2 & Lego Ninjago!! Gonna play all 3 all weekend long!!
If you want my money nintendo, port super smash bros 4 with all character and other dlc on a cartridge.
The lack of hawlucha is unacceptable!
Not much of a fan of Pokken or Arms. Smash is my fighting choice. If we ever get a Pokken 2 with a large amount of new fighters, I'll consider. There aren't nearly enough Pokes represented here.
Yeah, I'm double dipping too. To be honest only because my son has hassled me about it though - I would have passed otherwise. We'll have some good times playing it together until Smash rocks up, and that's the important thing.
@electrolite77 @Maxz Why not just offer the additional content as a free upgrade for early adopters, though? It would have made more sense to hold off a year on an all-new retail release of a six-month-old game and add even more content instead of going this route.
@RoomB31 I, also, bought all the DLC for MK8 on Wii U and absolutely loved it. No, MK8 Deluxe's "extras" are not worth another $60 investment for me, and by buying it as a Wii U owner, you're only encouraging them to do the same thing with other titles.
Also, with this much salt in the comments section over having an opinion that may differ from others, it really makes me not want to comment again.
Seeing the excitement from the Pokken community for this game (which will finally even the ground again between internation players and adds more competitive tools) has been very awesome over the past few months.
@Damo The scaling and sawtooth artifacts present in the Wii U version of the game are still present on Switch.
Even when taking screenshots in docked mode it doesn't look as crisp as 720p games do when I take screens of them.
9/10? Now I know you're taking the proverbial ?1$$.
Add another gem to the Switch library.
Can now play the full arcade experience at work with others...
How cool is that...
@NPC411
The way they're doing it makes perfect sense. They want a bit more exposure during the Christmas sales season for their high quality family-friendly multiplayer game-I think there's a retail release planned. Existing owners can buy in if they want and aren't being overcharged. I'm not sure 'they should have given us stuff for free' is an entirely fair criticism.
While I am a Pokemon fan, I never got that into the Wii U version, so I won't be in a hurry to get this one (although I probably will get it at some point).
I liked it on the Wii U, but not enough to double dip. It got boring after a while, and the special moves seemed overpowered.
@RoomB31 Wii U owners thought they were getting new fighters and levels. Then they just suddenly abandoned it. I wonder why?
@NPC411 I hope they release more Wii U ports, I just want them to be worth it. You don't have to justify your reason not to re-purchase, this has been many a Wii U owner frustration, and I get it. But as a Wii U owner who loves the Switch, the benefits of the Switch being portable as well, it does change how I view these ports as being more than just a cash-grab by Nintendo, and many others agree. I wouldn't complain if they reduced the price of some of these ports, not all (especially Pokken) need to be a full priced re-release, but other may disagree.
I'll be double dipping since I'm a sucker for Pokemon and I could benefit from the new features the Switch version have. Only thing is, it comes out the same day as Dragon ball Xenoverse 2 and I can only play one new game at a time. Since I never played Xenoverse 2, Pokken will have to wait.
@flapjack-ashley
This looks awesome to me. I never ponied up for the Wii U version, so I will definitely be getting the Switch version. I am glad they double-dipped, so that I may benefit from it.
Never played any type of Pokemon or pokken game in my life but liked the look of this until I tried the demo..played for about five minutes and got bored so obviously not my type of game.
Seriously though the scores on this site are waaay too generous on games..
Judging by the score attributed, the game is very enjoyable. The majority of the text for the review however reads more like a list of features rather than impressions of how good it is.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE but were they promised? Thinking/hoping something will happen, and being told it would happen are two different things. I never invested in the Wii U version because I felt the game was a lot for so little. I know the arcade version was getting new characters and I guess Wii U owners were hoping for those to come to Wii U (I mean why not), but I was never convinced that this would be the case (especially given the state of the Wii U in 2016, shallow breath and all).
@Wazeddie22 Couldn't agree more. It bored me to tears.
9 seems a bit high. Have this on the Wii U and it lost my interest pretty quick. Not double dipping for a handful of new characters and stages..
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Yeah.... That's definitely a sore spot for this one. I went ahead and bought Pokken on Wii U and was pretty disappointed. Getting some extra characters would have at least made me feel a bit better about the purchase.
@RoomB31 They did get some but like I said they just suddenly dropped the guillotine on this on Wii U. I don't like Pokemon in general so I'm going to be biased. Some of the characters are ridiculous, e.g. that chandelier. WTF?
I actually cancelled my pre order of this after seeing so many great games in the latest direct and deciding that I wouldn't have time for it. But then I had the chance to get it for £25 and I thought I may as well as I enjoyed the demo and never played it on Wii U. 9 seems high but we'll wait and see.
I loved this game definitely better than MK X and SF V but if they didn't improve the graphics at all **** this ****.
For the Wii U version they released one amiibo card (shadow mewtwo) that was included with the first run of physical copies. I never really understood the point with it, you could unlock that character from the start and that was all. They should have released and sold cards with new fighters. What a wasted opportunity.
Any impressions on the new controller that launches along side this?
Aaaand this is why I skipped the Wii U version.
I want to like this game. I even tried the demo, but I cannot be bothered.
Oh didnt like wii u version story mode was so long and boring! Plus only think to unlock were pointless custom items on your flat avartar...
Think extras here are ok but 9 seems little to high.
@NPC411 Not being given free stuff when you want free stuff is not the same as being 'punished'. You are not being punished. You are being charged the same price for a game as everyone else, then complaining about the lack of special treatment. People buying the game now have no advantage over you. In fact, you arguably have an advantage, in that you've had access to the game for the last several months.
You're also complaining that people are 'salty' about your opinion on this, when being 'salty' means being unable to accept a result with good grace if it isn't the one you wished for. This is exactly what you are doing in claiming you are being 'punished' for not getting free stuff. Other people are simply pointing this out.
People highlighting flaws in your statement is not "them being salty about you having a differing opinion". It's you being wrong - or at least hyperbolic and inaccurate in your wording. People are level-headedly observing this. You can either accept the absurdity of claiming that being treated equally is being 'punished', or continue dousing yourself in a salty broth of your own making.
I'd also like to point out that this purely with regards to the Snipperclips pricing strategy, which I think is entirely fair and non-malicious (although I'd obviously also like to be given free stuff given the choice). I have some reservations about the cost of Pokken, which means I'm unlikely to pick it up too near release. But this is more to do with the value that 'arcade' style games present to me than it is to do with 'double dipping'.
Anyway, feel free to keep commenting, but please do think about whether the words you're using appropriately describe the situation in question. Using the word "punishment" to describe non-preferential (i.e. equal) treatment is indulging in hyperbole.
The game is good and all but not enough for Pokken Wii U owners like me to double dip...
@Maxz Thank you for posting on this site and having a complete brain.
I'll probably pick this up at some point when I get a Switch, but likely when it's on discount. I enjoyed the Wii U demo, but the fact remains that fighting games just don't hold my attention for very long.
@coolaggro Mk8 at least has substantial content upgrades. Five characters isn't worth $50-$60 to me.
@thesilverbrick It's missing the part that enables you to consistently boil vegetables to an acceptable standard, but thank you from me and my brain.
We'll work on the vegetable thing.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Because the Wii U fell flat on its face
We regretfully bought the Wii U version. We played it probably less than 6 hours before we were done with it. Even though Tekken was never my favorite franchise in the fighting genre, I at least enjoyed playing it. I did not enjoy Pokken at all other than the presentation and look. So this will be a "no-brainer" for us....we will skip.
I love how the reviewer makes sure they point out that it's one of the best fighting games on the Switch. If you don't count the many great NeoGeo fighters, then there are only 2 I believe. That some tough competition.
@Maxz They say raw vegetables are better for you, anyway.
I've already expressed my dislike for Pokken before, so I'll refrain from being negative. Instead, if someone out there who matters is reading this: Hyrule Warriors DX? Pretty please?
i really liked this game but it was a grind of facing the same pokemon over and over again.
Not everyone wants to dump endless hours into a fighting game to get a new hat.
I'd like to have had a story mode where i went up the ranks to face the 21 pokemon.
Something getting glossed over are the balance changes brought to the arcade version once the new characters started dropping. Is there a list of them somewhere?
@Damo About those visuals, I'm a bit disappointed resolution is not higher. The game looked rough on Wii U, is this improvement enough? I'm not a graphic junkie or anything, but it was very noticeable on Wii U. Thanks
@meleebrawler I'm sure Serebii.net will have a complete list of balance changes in a couple of weeks after the game's launch. (You might want to erase the repeated posts, mate)
Woo this is gonna be a long week.
9/10, wow, this game was crap on wii u and switch version will be no different, I should never have bought it. Nintendo Life reviews as usual are laughable, never could i take them serious, i check other sites for a more grounded review, NL are flying with the cuckoo's when they review games developed by nintendo
This is one of the more obvious examples of Wii u owners getting the shaft. Would it really cost that much to put the bonus characters, which have already been created, in the Wii u version via paid dlc?
At least MK8 had been out for over 2 years so it was a bit more forgivable. Either support your game or dont bother releasing it.
I'm on the fence about this one.
Mario Kart 8 got an entirely revamped battle mode, new characters, new karts, double items, extra drift burst, and some other new features.
Splatoon 2 introduced Salmon Run, new gear, a new single player mode, new specials, and new stages.
The changes in this one seems much more basic. All of the arcade characters should have been added to the Wii U version since it came out so recently, and there aren't enough other changes to make this worthwhile. I might get it in the distant future if I see it on sale.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
don't like the 9/10? Don't think it's almost as good as Breath of the Wild? yeah me neither.
Just bought this for my Wii U last year, so I'm not double-dipping. If they would have just added the new characters and modes as DLC for the Wii U version, that would have been good enough for me. But $60 for those extras? No thanks.
While I want it, it will have to wait so I can save money. October is not going to be kind to my wallet because of the triple whammy of Fire Emblem Warriors, Destiny 2 PC, and Mario Odyssey in rapid succession.
@rockodoodle Yeah, but I had already gotten the DLC (which was great) so it was really just for battle mode. I've played it on my friends and it is fun but still a skip
Another overpriced WiiU port for the Sale/Used list. So many "new" games coming out to spend $60 on this.
The demo seem to play just like the WiiU version, no idea how it can be a 9/10. The usual NintendoLife "nintendo on the cover" review score bump.
Please re-release Captain Toad and Paper Mario on Switch Nintendo then we'll talk!
I played the demo and it wasn't my cup of tea. Not surprised, I don't really like fighters except for Smash. The character roster looks nice enough for a new IP though.
I am certain that I will double dip
But my backlog is sooo long.
I never had a Wii U so I never got it the first go around. This and dragonball on Friday, I'm feeling the hype!
Loved this game on the Wii U and have been waiting for it to come to the Switch especially considering the awesome extras coming with the Switch version, the only downside to Pokken Tournament DX this week for me is Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 also comes out on the Switch this week . What a great week for Switch owners.
It's a Switch game by Nintendo, so it was always going to get either a 9 or a 10.
@EDF Why not say your reasons that this game is bad? Also, you should understand that others may have different opinions than yours. If you think this game is bad, and others think this game is great, it doesn't mean that you're right, and they're wrong.
@Haywired No, it was made by Bandai Namco Games.
I completely agree with a score of 9 , If it's not your type of game it's easy to write it off but if you are a fan of this type of title and you play the game and learn it you realize the actual amount of depth in this game and the Nintendo Switch is the perfect type of system for this game .
Skipped this on Wii U and I'm skipping it on Switch. Would rather have Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, which has more content.
Honestly don't think this has the same hype as the other five "big" games (Zelda, Mario Kart, ARMS, Splatoon 2, Mario + Rabbids). Will be curious to see its sales in comparison to FIFA, Dragon Ball, and NBA 2K.
@NinNin

@Romeo-75 I honestly don't understand why people are so mad about the 9. Even though the game is playable on the Wii U for a year now, it's still looks like a good fighter game.
If you own the game on the Wii U, the DX version can be a let down. If you don't and you like Pokémon and / or Fight games, this should be a must. That's how I interpreted this review.
To be clear; I haven't played the game myself.
@NPC411
You could always just buy Snipperclips's DLC if ya don't wanna feel burned.
@NinNin
Who said anything about other ppls opinions, certainly not me, it was a bland fighter with little depth and certainly not worth a 9, it's just NL bloating Ninty developed games yet again but that's just one opinion, this opinion is right for me but may not be for others, am cool with that
Overly generous as usual can't take this site seriously with it's scores on many reviews.
Do we get the Shadow Mewto amiibo card again with the retail version?
The site is glitching for me.
Modern gaming score scale:
8 or below(unplayable trash)
9 or 10("Too high")
LOL
Anyway, I'm definitely double dipping here(eventually). Pokken is really fun and probably one of the more refreshing fighters we've had in a while. All the new characters sound cool. I just wish they added Incineroar, Hawlucha and the Black belt duo. Heck, and maybe even the Hitmon trio, but then again, it doesn't seem like their shooting for a Smash Bros. sized roster and I can respect that.
@Paddle1 Glitchy here as well on homepage.
@KryptoKrunch, LOL so so true., your modern gaming score scale .
For all the people complaining about the score , on Metacritic right now the game has an overall score of 80, which for this type of game is excellent . It's listed as having 24 positive reviews and 3 mixed NintendoLife is not by no means the only reviewer to give the title a 9 and there is a reviewer that scores it higher than a 9 and proclaims it a must have and it's worth noting that the game has no NEGATIVE reviews .
A lazy port...getting a 9 on Nintendolife. Of course!
@EDF,
If Switch is concerned, they are handing nine's and especially tens out on this site like there's no tommorow. This site has become super unreliable in the reviews-department, but that's my opinion!
I will say, the synergy burst moves look amazing, but again just having one special each is a bit limiting and I can see it getting old after a short while. Most fighters are given atleast 2 or so special moves or maybe an added finishing move of some kind. I realize the button input in this game is less "complex" than most.
@EDF You said it. Reviews are opinions. You shouldn't attack other people simply because they have different opinions than yours. Also, this game wasn't developed by Nintendo.
@Henmii Why not use reasons? Why do you think this version is a lazy port? It gets five more characters. The resolution is increased from 960x720 to 720p, and the local multiplayer mode is improved. How is it a lazy port?
@Maxz Vegetables are better raw.
Didn't play the original, so I'm really hyped for this to arrive on Friday. With the 60fps local multiplayer, this should make for an awesome drinking game for me and my friends. Can't wait!
@RainbowGazelle What's a Wiiu?
What a great year for fighting games!
I got it on Wii U but it ended up collecting dust and i traded it in without having used my version. I wanted to like it. It seems like a cool idea. But i just cant get into it and there's no sense forcing that i guess.
It is a game that allows me to play as Darkrai...I need no other reason to purchase this game. (Yes I own the Wiiu version, and no I don't feel like Nintendo "punished" me for getting it on the Wiiu)
This is overall the better version, but the local multiplayer is still better on the Wii U version with each player getting his/her own screen as the game is designed to be played (as well as controllers that let you grab and counter with just a single button).
With this particular game's mechanics, splitscreen absolutely sucks and is just asking for headaches, while providing only a single viewpoint would give a massive advatage to the player whose viewpoint is used. Having the ability to play portably is nothing compared to having proper local multiplayer battles on the Wii U.
If they were to actually bring the extra characters to the Wii U version, I'd say it would actually be the superior version of the game. All in all, those extra characters and the bonus mode provided just aren't worth double-dipping on this game.
@coolaggro you got a few more characters and mods, plus the ability to store two items. Yeah, it was expensive, but I bet I end up putting 100 hours on it, so from that perspective, it was worth it.
Now I don't blame Nintendo for providing these updated ports for a wider audience on Switch, but they need to do a better job of catering to their loyal customers who already bought these games on the Wii U, especially for games like Pokkén where part of the game is downgraded due to no longer having access to the second screen or touchscreen capabilities in docked mode.
Their first and best option would be to provide a huge discount on the Switch version of the game for those who already own the Wii U version of the game like they do for the Wii U Virtual Console. The issue however is providing proof that someone owns the physical version of the game. They could check for save data, but that would unfairly grant the discount to people who merely rented or borrowed the game. They would have to create some kind real world in-store event where you'd bring in your game disc to get scanned while signed into your MyNintendo account , which probably wouldn't be worth the trouble. Although, at least with Pokkén, they could just have you scan your Shadow Mewtwo amiibo card (that came with the physical copies of the game) onto the e-Shop.
With that method mostly infeasable, that means they should just add the updates provided in the Switch versions of the games as paid DLC for the Wii U versions. Sure, they'll lose money in the short term by developing the extra Wii U version of the content and not gettng many people to double-dip on the full price of the Switch game, but it would be helpful in the long term to provide positive PR and customer loyalty in the same way they did with the Ambassador Program for early adopters of the 3DS.
@rockodoodle Sure, not knocking Mario Kart at all or Pokken. Great games, just not games I would double dip in. Very few are-- Smash, Splatoon, and World of Goo (just to support them) are about what I would double dip on.
@BulbasaurusRex
Yeah, as good as that sounds, unfortunately that probably wouldn't happen. As far as I know, that's never been a thing. Even with the plethora of PS3/360 remasters on PS4 and XB1, there's no big discount.
@electrolite77
Take your commonsense and facts elsewhere. Don't get in the way of a good narrative haters want to push.
Anyway... Good, informative review but I played the demo and I think I'll be skipping this game. Not terrible and I can see why a lot of people enjoyed it but the style of fighting just didn't click with me. Surprising because I actually do like Tekken (particularly Tekken Tag).
@NPC411 How is Nintendo punishing purchasers of Snipperclips? You can get plus as dlc for 1000 yen
I really liked the game on Wii U but the roster was way too small. I'll be getting the switch version but even with the added characters from the arcade version I still think the roster could be bigger, especially when you consider how many Pokémon there actually are. I really hope Nintendo supports the game with new characters like they are doing with ARMS.
Have this in my WiiU but never really have a chance to finish it. Will definitely double dip this and day 1 for me.
@BulbasaurusRex What's the problem with the split-screen feature?
@NinNin
NL are Nintendo robots, there opinion don't count, it's still a Nintendo 1St party game, they will have had some input, also many others on here didn't agree with the review but you singled out just me, hmm
@Dark-Luigi Same here. I'm having a pretty good time with Street fighter Ultra at the moment.
@EDF I don't read every single comment. I'm not a moderator. I reply to comments when I want to. Also, disagreeing is fine. Insulting others just because you don't agree with them is not.

And it's not good to insult someone.
Is there an online ranked mode for the 3 vs 3, and if not can you at least play 3 vs 3 in online lobbies?
And how are the online lobbies (being called "group matches" in this game apparently). Is it as robust as other online fighters? Is there chat in any form within the lobbies?
79 at the time of typing on Metacritic. Quite a good selection of reviews.

The game looked interesting and I skipped it on Wii U, so I tried the demo on Switch but was very disappointed. I love Pokemon and all fighter games, including Smash, Tekken, Mortal Kombat etc, but Pokken somehow lacked everything what good fighter has. Can't really tell what it is, but the game just seemed boring and not engaging at all...
Happy for everyone who enjoys it though Have fun!
The demo hasn't really grabbed me, if I'm honest. I'll spend a bit more time with it and see how I feel at the weekend.
The Wii U version was a 7/10 game. Way worse than other fighting games on the system and the graphics were just lazy. Low res, low poly and blurry textures. Tekken Tag Tournament was a launch game and looked much more crisp.
@NinNin,
Okay, that's true. But I still think a 9 is far to high. And even if it has improvements, its still a very easy way to fill up the Retail-roster of games!
So NL will award Mario Odyssey a 12/10 then. I see.
Seems like my comment didn't go through the first time when NL was experiencing server issues, so here goes nothing...
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Pokkén Tournament really isn't a great game in my opinion. I love Pokémon, and I love fighting games, so naturally I thought I'd love this hybrid concept, but I put it down just shy of two weeks after playing the first version on the Wii U.
It just seems like a meld of mechanics thrown together - it's both overwhelming and underwhelming. I could never really grasp it, despite trying for days. There wasn't that "click" moment that I get with other games I fail to understand at first.
As much as I want this for collection purposes, there's no way I'm forking out 40 odd quid for five additional fighters and what not to try and give it another shot - especially when I'm content enough when it comes to fighting games, with Smash Wii U, ARMS, and even USFII still keeping me occupied.
The next Pokémon game I'll be purchasing is the core adventure for the Switch, that's right, Pokémon US and UM can go do one too. Enough of the double-dipping already, aside from you MK8 Deluxe - you the best
Course I'll be getting the inevitable Smash 4 Switch version, which may sound hypocritical, but you can't go wrong with Nintendo's giants like MK and Smash being playable on a platform such as the Switch, with the dual functionality it offers.
Just my two cents though!
Hated the demo, and won't get it anyway. The number of characters is stupidly low. Just give us skins of Pokémons with similar abilities and skeletons...
Also, the arenas are too small, the special lack punch and power, the two combat systems really aggravates me... Overall, it's not for me at all.
I loved the Wii U original but there isn't enough new stuff to warrant paying £50 for.
Already have it on Wii U so this is a pass for me. There just isn't enough content to justify $60.
I played the demo on Wii U and wasn't too interested at the time. Now I play the Switch demo and it actually makes me want to play more. I'm a Pokemon fan but not really all that into Tekken-type games.
I'm considering this for a purchase.
@NinNin
Give it a rest, so I guess I am supposed to agree with their overloaded reviews of Nintendo games, 1St or 2nd party ones. I had this game on wii u, so I know exactly what it is and yes they are robots when it comes to reviews, they are the only ones that score games very high compared to other sites. Tbh i prefer to read the general public comments, they are usually more truthful and not blinkered by having their heads firmly planted up nintendo's backside. If you think my coment was a insult, which it wasn't then you need to get out more in the real world and see for yourself what a real insult is, now be gone with you and keep smiling ☺
@Anti-Matter
Did you say something interesting, no, thought not, think for yourself instead of copying other ppls comments, i was having a good discussion with NinNin, leave us to it unless you have something new to say
@EDF I never said that you had to agree with others. Of course, you can disagree with others. That's completely normal. It happens all the time, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, you can also tolerate different opinions. If you don't agree with a review, you can respectfully refute the points the reviewer made. Calling others robots just because you disagree with them is disrespectful and tactless, to say the least.
@NinNin
Lol, we are all robots in a forever changing world, robots to society, no different from this reviewer, nothing disrespecting about that and certainly not a insult, if i wanted to insult believe me i would have said something far worse but a insult wasn't my intentions and as far as i can see it wasn't one where i come from
got it for the wii u last month for 20$ I will not be buying it for the switch. was ok, saved myself 40 bucks by getting the wii U version.
@Pazuzu666 I can live with that. I'll just wait for the dolphin emu update and play them on pc.
Bought and I have to say it is a gem!
After playing the Wii U version I was disappointed when I saw how blurry the character models still were on Switch - especially in the slow pace of the tutorial. The in-game action is so fast and furious though, that I have to admit it doesn't ultimately detract a great deal. Personally I wouldn't rate it any higher than 7 or 8 out of 10, but that certainly doesn't mean I'm not enjoying it - it's good fun.
@NinNin With the way the game works, split-screen is vastly inferior to the Wii U's method of giving both players their own screen. During the field phases of the battles, it has to show opposite viewpoints at the same time on the same screen, which is very disorienting and just asking for headaches. It's the reason why the original arcade version of the game was designed with two screens from the very beginning.
if your reading this in 2020 how is it?
Pokémon + Tekken = Pokkén.🤯
Great game. Had it on Wii U and is even better (and played much more) on SWITCH. I hope there will be a sequel one day.
