Much like the armed robbers of its heist-happy world, PAYDAY 2 rarely strays from the blueprint of its criminal lifestyle. Case the joint in question, scope out the vault, note the security, return with masks and guns in tow, drill some safes, shoot a small country’s worth of cops to death and escape. The location may change, the conditions of the job might be tweaked here and there, but Overkill Software’s crime sim knows its secret sauce and rarely messes with the ingredients.
It’s this simple core that makes this first-person shooter both consistently fun and numbingly repetitive, but it’s a spin on the traditional FPS format that, nevertheless, helps it fit the co-operative-centric ethos of Switch. If you’ve played the series, or this particular entry before on another system, this version doesn’t bring anything particularly new to the mix, but the bigger question is, what has the Swedish developer had to take away to make this port work on a handheld device?
The answer is: a lot less than you might think. Payday 2 on Switch is remarkably close to the full package you may have played elsewhere (including the updated Crimewave Editions that shot their way onto PS4 and Xbox One in 2015). It’s still the same exercise in time management and gunplay - where you’ll spend most of your time between fixing drills that are boring into vaults while killing an endless stream of law enforcement. Stealth is still an option on some heists, but most will descend into a Heat-style showdown as you don masks and raise hell. There’s a diverse mix of settings - including hijacking planes, taking down armoured cars and robbing a Christmas-themed drug factory - but it still boils down to the same basic template.
Crime.NET - the game’s matchmaking infrastructure - also returns in full, supporting online play, local play and solo with AI. The AI is still passable at best, and the same issue that dogged both of the previous versions remains unchanged here. You can play the game’s mixture of loosely connected heists entirely offline on your own, but without the tenacity and ingenuity of actual players on your team, your artificially-manned squad is only good for distracting cops and the occasional revive. You’ll still need to fix drills, transport bags and safes and other more complicated tasks yourselves. It’s just another reminder that this is an experience designed to excel with other players, where the difference between the most significant payday and a measly haul is a lot of teamwork and plenty of testicular fortitude.
So where does this Switch iteration sit in terms of other versions of the game? The PC build is so far removed from the console versions that comparing it to Switch would be an exercise in perpetual frustration but in terms of content, the Nintendo iteration packs in most (but not all) of the heists currently available on PS4 and Xbox One. There are 50 missions in total compared to the 58 you can play on other consoles, but when you consider this number includes plenty of DLC missions you’d need to pay extra for on these other platforms, you realise the Nintendo entry is pretty well stocked.
The same goes for masks. The PS4/XO versions boast over 300 while the Switch has almost 280 facial adornments to its name. Switch has as many weapons as the other console versions, and all of them can be modified to improve their performance (while making them a lot harder to conceal when casing a potential target). The Switch entry even has one up on all the other Payday 2 instalments out there in Joy, a Japanese-American hacker with a LED mask, a set of upgradeable skills geared towards (you guessed it) hacking and a new voiceover. She’s a timed exclusive, but it’s still great to have something that’s just for Nintendo Switch owners, even if it is only for a short time.
Performance wise, it’s a mixed bag. On smaller jobs and in more confined areas, that promised 30fps holds relatively true. In more extensive areas with police, security guards and mobsters spawning all over the shop, that frame rate can get seriously choppy. It doesn’t break the game, and it only happens in short bursts, but when coupled with a sloppy hit detection model (an issue that’s dogged the game since 2013) it can make for a frustratingly inaccurate shooter. Strarbreeze has officially confirmed the Switch version is launching a year behind the console and PC versions of the game in regards to content and technical updates, but side-by-side, the review code we played wasn’t far removed from the version currently available on PS4 (at least in terms of core gameplay), which is remarkable when you consider the vast difference in hardware.
The visuals have taken a hit too, but it’s not as bad as you might expect - especially when compared to the sacrifices made to get DOOM running on Switch. Assets outside of each mission area take the worst knock and loom in the background perpetually void of detail, and the dynamic lighting effects have been dialled down, but it’s a surprisingly faithful port everywhere else. It is, ultimately, a four-and-a-half-year-old game, so Payday 2’s relatively smooth port over to Nintendo Switch benefits from being a game designed with less strenuous specs in mind.
Regarding new additions, Overkill has implemented touchscreen support for navigating its menus, which have now been given an overhaul to support finger-based navigation. The UI functions a lot smoother than the one found elsewhere, and it’s both responsive and easy to use. There’s also support for HD Rumble, which gives gunfire satisfying physical feedback, although there’s no motion-control functionality, for better or for worse. You can also play locally on the same network with friends, should you have any on hand. It runs at 720p in handheld and - according to the developers - "up to 1080p" in docked mode (it's closer to 900p from what we can tell), but some pretty uninspiring textures and asset designs make playing in handheld the more attractive avenue for this retooled career criminal.
It also goes without saying that there's also no support for voice chat on Switch, so you'll need to invest in a Discord server or something similar if you want get the most out of Payday 2's co-op-centric gameplay. That's a definite negative when you consider that versions on other systems have party chat functionality, and could prove to be a real deal-breaker for some players; the ability to communicate plans and tactics on the fly is a key part of the game's appeal.
Conclusion
Payday 2’s devotion to its core gameplay mantra makes it a unique way to team up with other players on Switch, but it does seal the game’s mechanics in a time capsule that only serves to noticeably age it when seen through the prism of 2018. The inclusion of many of the game’s far more exciting DLC missions as standard does make its diverse mix of heists a more tantalising prospect for new adopters, and the relatively smooth port means it's a great way to experience the FPS on a handheld, but with the game launching with a year's worth of updates and content missing make its relatively high price tag stick out like a sore thumb.

That's the score I was expecting. I seen an apt subheading in another review just now, "Highway Robbery".
You can see more reviews here.
http://www.metacritic.com/game/switch/payday-2/critic-reviews
And they're not good so far.
How a game that releases before it's finished, isn't the most up-to-date version, lacks voicechat communication, runs at 30fps(not ideal for this genre), has framerate issues, charges full price despite its age and shortcomings gets a 7...... I don't know. And from what I've heard and read, I wouldn't expect any future patches either.
Had this not been on Switch, I wouldn't have given it a second look. I might be tempted...
nope
Not interested in the slightest
It's a damn shame that there's content missing, I wonder why they did that.
@SonOfVon From what I read, the devs said that either they would release the game now or, by adding the extra content, the release of the game would be delayed even further.
So they decided to release it now and promised to add the missing content with an update down the line.
And from what I understand the game is only one update behind the PS4 and XB1, which in turn are behind the updates done on the PC...
i have it on PC and haven't really played it. just not my bag.
this game just makes no sense on the switch. so odd they brought it over. with N's non-existent online infrastructure i can't imagine this sells very well.
also really shows just how weak the switch hardware is. no reason to try to shoehorn these games into the switch; they just don't work. the switch is about indies, nintendo's less than demanding games, and side games like the gameboy and ds and etc. too bad only ubisoft so far has made a real switch game.
Considering how long the other versions had to wait for updates, I wouldn't feel too optimistic they'll be arriving anytime soon. If it flops they might not arrive at all.
I have less than zero interest in this game. A seven seems generous.
Good game, might pick it up. Already own the PC version.
As soon as they get this up to date on Switch, I might pick this up. Hopefully Nintendo will get their non-existent online up to date as well.
This is gonna flop
@SonOfVon
According to the developers, they said that it was what was available to them at the time of submission to Nintendo. They promised that it will get updated, but some people on here think they won't cause of their track record of supporting other consoles as a last priority. I personally think they will update it, but it will probably take a while.
Played the first one a bit. It was fun, but this is a series I can't imagine playing anywhere but on PC.
Personally I'm just perplexed that this game has made it out of PC at all. I probably should finally try it, I spent so many days wasting time in Enemy Territory as a teen – but it will be on a platform with a mouse and always free online multiplayer.
Completely forgot about this and apparently for all the right reasons.
Well done a review which covers off voices chat!
I don't see much detail in the review about handheld / on the go co-op... i'm guessing i can't play this on a bus pause to go underground and then restart when i come up above ground?
For me the whole beauty of the switch is portableplay / pause'n'restart... is this game only good for long period play in a fixed location with mates on a fast broadband??
Ie... should i just buy on a different system?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE They're reviewing what's in the game, not what's not in the game. Why don't you chill out and respect the opinion of the reviewer.
I can imagine this being a blast using local play with your team all in the same room! Shame it's a little ropey.
I'm not bothering PS4 version was iffy, so I don't expect much here.
I'm not bothering PS4 version was iffy, so I don't expect much here.
Never played it on pc, I think nows the time for me to jump in.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
NL's review is actually right on par with almost everyone else on Metacritic. Score is "66" currently and NL gave it a "7" (70). Yeesh, always so pessimistic about everything.
I'm gonna pick it up since I've never played the series. If I bought every Switch game based on what other platforms have I'd never be satisfied. In my mind, the markets are completely different from one to the other. Is the game so bad that every comment here has something negative to say?
@Audiobrainiac
I'm with you. I've never played it and I don't really game on the PC, so it works for me. Voice chat doesn't bother me cause I never use it even if it's available. It's all a matter of preference, see you online.
Skip... At 66 metacritic - This will be in the bargain bin in no time - zero need to pay $50 now.
@Pahvi Not a single image. Incomplete version, incomplete review materials.
My friends and I played this for a little while on PC but it wasn't very memorable for us. We really enjoyed the concept and even could stealth a couple of the smaller levels without ever getting caught. It was a rush and fun with 4 dedicated players. However, we quickly found that as soon as we started running with random players, we quickly were finding it impossible to stealth. Lot of missions either turned into failures or smash and grabs. Part of the issue with the randoms is not everyone had a mic or would chat to discuss tactics.
This game has always looked like a very mediocre experience to me. I supported Bethesda by picking up Skyrim and Doom (and I will also be getting Wolfenstein), and I will support Capcom's efforts, as well as Rockstar's (especially if they find a way to adapt Red Dead Redemption and GTA 5). I just can't throw my money at games, just because they're on Switch (especially since they're charging the same price for a scaled back port).
So, in short, it is the same experience as PS4, minus one main update (which was released at the end of 2017 AFTER the Switch version was made), it has exclusive features and content and it runs in 720p handheld/upto 1080p docked? Oh, and further updates are coming?
And it's only £30 physical in the UK? My copy is already in the post.
@MoonKnight7 I'm afraid ol' Sliggy's pessimist depiction is a bright and rosy wonderland compared to how crappy this port actually is. Just read some of the other reviews, they go into more detail on the suicidal enemy AI, broken partner AI, Wii-like visuals with subpar SFX, sluggish controls, erratic aiming in portable mode, lack of control tuning (see Panic Button's DOOM port for how to do it as well as can be done without pointer controls), gruelingly frequent frame rate drops, and absence of D-pad shortcuts to alleviate the lack of native voice chat functions.
Just beyond poor in execution, this port would've been better off cancelled. Now it's going to further fuel arguments and possibly business decisions that porting onto Switch is not necessarily worth the time, money, and effort. This isn't just a bad port, it's an actively destructive port.
Awful game... Just no
Until they had a patch out to fix some of the issues and if there's a sale then maybe I'll touch this but for now it's not worth looking.
Bout to be a down year for switch
How they have the nerve to charge full-price for this I will never know, unless it’s that “Switch Tax” they keep going on about. But given I paid £10 for it on PS4 a few years ago, this is either going to get a big pass or I’ll wait for a big discount. Shame really.
@gatorboi352 Naturally, after a rather stellar first year. Look the bright side, it can only get better in 2019!
I do hope that plenty of people do enjoy it. I'm thinking about (finally) picking up Bayonetta 1 + 2 this weekend (I never got around to playing them on Wii U), and I'm tempted to get Dragon Quest Builders.
To those who are saying that it's a down year, I really don't think so. I mean, it's going to be impossible to top that first year, but I think that it's just going to build upon an already good thing. Third parties are coming around, and their efforts are getting stronger and stronger (especially when it comes to indie releases). You look at the so-called majors, and they're destroying the very industry that they originally helped to create (you have to pay $10 to secure a second save slot in Metal Gear Survive!). I think that you're going to see more and more people gravitate towards pure gaming, which Switch (along with mobile) provide.
7 is way too much for this game. DON'T BUY THIS GAME. It’s definitely not worth AU$75 when it’s AU$10 or free everywhere else. This is a mainly a multiplayer game; you can’t really take that on the go. Graphics are old and ugly. Gameplay is repetitive and boring. Remember peeps, you don’t need to buy every third party game just because it came out on switch especially if it’s a mediocre game like this one.
Not mine kind of game. Also, @ this time in America, the Florida school tragedy this past Valentine's day has got a lot of anti-gun happy politicians, & many others to again start pointing their fingers at video games. My point is, this NX port couldn't release at a worse time.
@SonOfVon
It's not missing. This version will receive updates like any other version. And the reasoning is simple: Because it's a port of a game that is still getting updates. You have to find a fix point to port and can't add more and more stuff during the porting process.
"Payday 2 is releasing on Switch with content up to and including the ‘Most Wanted’ update, which is equivalent to the content released through mid-2017 on PC. PS4 and Xbox One received one additional update after that, the ‘Master Plan’ update, which released near the end of 2017. So Switch is one update behind other consoles, which are slightly behind PC.“
"The reasoning for the Switch content: we’re making continuous updates to a game that’s turning 5 years old this year, and to get the game out in early 2018 on Switch meant that our team had to go with the content ported and available at the time of console submission. The PS4 and Xbox One versions are now almost up to par with PC content, and Switch is close behind those versions. There are future content updates planned for Switch, as well."
@formulas666
Being old is not a valid point/complaint for a multiplayer game that is still getting updates and support. Look at TF2 for example. And one can only hope that Overwatch will be supported in the same way as other popular multiplayer games.
@gatorboi352 You need to take a statistics class if you're drawing that conclusion from one game.
@Gaeus that was informative, thanks!
Got the game for free from Steam a few years ago, the game is just not for me. Found it to be rather boring though my pals enjoyed it.
Given what i’ve read about the Switch version, combined with devs track record surrounding consoles, i’d advise people to be cautious with this one.
I do not play this type of game often. I wanted it to score well, but if it sucks, it sucks. I would love to get into this genre but haven't. I will keep waiting until there is a good one to seep my teeth in.
Seems like fun for co-op.
Might play it in single player though. Give it a shot... Seems to run well, and despite all the hate most people who played it say it's pretty fun.
I'd likely never play through to completion anyways so, having a little under 300 missions vs a little over won't really matter for me. I'd never even get close to doing them.
I don't trust nintendolife reviews . Also, these first two months in the this year for the switch haven't been great
game never interested me on the PS3 or PS4, looks more like the PS3 version graphically
Hmm. Skip.
I'll be grabbing this at some point. Really like the idea of the game.
Questioning a score and pointing out the game's faults doesn't make someone disrespectful of the reviewer nor does it make them pessimistic.
https://youtu.be/1rZo2GCg4JQ
at 0.20 we saw you on GameXplain's review Alex.. ;P
Heist with Nintendolife and GameXplain..
basically unplayable in multiplayer form without voice chat....
Not interested in this in the slightest, but has anyone else noticed that Joy's name and mask are Joy-Con references?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE no but you went through a stage previously where you was hinting that nintendo life were taking some kind of back handers to score game high.
@JamesR Nooo!! Don't do it!
In fact @everyone, don't support this game. The developers are hacks!
@MoonKnight7 don't believe them about updating.
@Dom As usual, so confised by the writing on this site - you say that with the game launching with a year worth of updates and content missing makes it stick outike a sore thumb..... this is almost the opposite of what the review says... why is it having a year worth of updates a bad thing?? — “but” having a year worth of updates and missing content makes it stick out like a sore thumb—... I’m so confused.
@jimi Considering it was still an equivalent PS4 game and we already know the PS4 is more powerful than Switch - obviously it isn’t going to run the game at the same level as something that is clearly more powerful..
Surprised we are still having this argument, but something I can use portably running a PS4 game should be expected to be compromised in at least some way... I don’t know why you think that is ‘laughable’... it’s not just about the game coming out 5 years ago.. they obviously need to scale it for the platform.
In addition, hardly any PS4 game up until 2017 was in 60fps but you want the tiny little tablet Switch to play those same games at 60fps.. I would like that, sure..but why would that be reasonable to assume?
@FinalFrog: "Violent killer clowns commiting crimes. Seriously? Somebody out there still thinks that's really edgy and cool??? Whomever is making this thinks so and believes I will too. A complete cringe. This might get buys from the 15-17 year old Xbox mindset."
Was never interested from the start.
@jimi I don’t entirely disagree - I just think that complaining (as many do) about a game being X years old but runs at 30 not 60 is unnessessary. If it ran on equivalent spec hardware in 2013 then that’s fine.. but was it 60fps on Xbox360 at 720p? The fact that it can run at 30fps at all in my hands, seems reasonable to me (but obviously 60 is better, just replying in regards to the expectations).
@FinalFrog @Dom So they updated the Payday 2 guide and Now mention that the Switch version is a year behind in updates... that explains the review conclusion but I didn’t see that even mentioned in the review?? Strange.
@FTL It does make it stick out. That's one of the reasons it got a seven. Launching without certain updates and content is an issue. Doesn't mean the rest of the game is bad. Nothing to be confused over.
@FTL It literally says in the review mate.
@FinalFrog Me, too. No interest at all in pretending to be a bank robber. I'll just stick to saving the world from monsters.
If anyone is looking to team up, just pop me a message!
The lack of voice chat completely kills it for me. It's an essential part of the Payday experience. Without being able to communicate with other players, there's basically no way to strategize the heists. Unacceptable.
@jimi: Thank you for correcting me, in a polite manner. I appreciate that. It's your kind of response that makes for good conversation, & dialogue.
@FinalFrog: "glorification of violent criminal acts is abhorrent to me. The real world is full of ugly violence." - I agree.
@Dom Hi Dom, firstly, thanks for replying, your reply makes it clear what you meant, but the confusion came from a couple things here - your previous paragraph where it states about DLC was mostly included and then “the review code we played wasn’t far removed from the version currently available on PS4” (in relation to core gameplay). Then in the conclusion to say that this missing stuff makes the game stick out like a sore thumb seems contradictory.. but to be fair it was mentioned about the missing stuff but the sentiment of how it impacts the game in the conclusion seemed contradictory to the way it was mentioned in the article as I just described. Anyway, thanks for the review.
Brought this today is awesome I would give it an 8!
How do we convince Starbreeze to bring Riddick to the Switch?
I see some people came into this with pre-existing hate in tow and would have female dogged and moaned and told us how dire the port is even if it scored a 9 here. I am sure the game is fun and it is only missing 8 heists, some of which are paid DLC? All I care about is this....is the game I am getting worth my time on the Switch? I'm thinking yes considering there aren't many other titles on the Switch that give you this type of game play. I ignore the obvious hate posts, because I could see those posts being valid if the game seriously sucked and was broken. Neither is the case..
@SonOfVon It's because the developers literally don't care at all about taking the time to update the console versions. They once posted on Twitter that it's the customers' faults for not getting the PC version instead.
@Prof_Yoshtonics lack of voice chat is down to nintendo. Can't blame the developers for that
Kinda odd how some folks are so hungry for games but give themselves every reason NOT to buy a game...
Whatever, a 7 was what I was expecting. Seems like a fun co-op title. I might pick this up down the road to play with my brother.
Does this need to be equal to other versions of the game? Switch owners will buy it anyway, because portability warrants any game, regardless of state and how good it is.
@MFD Switch owners would pay $50 for Fortnite because its portable
@kobashi100 I don't blame the devs. It just breaks the game for me. If Nintendo introduces voice chat with the online service, then I might pick the game up down the road.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE You make it sound like 7 is a terrible score...
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
“Questioning a score and pointing the game's faults doesn't make someone disrespectful of the reviewer nor does it make them pessimistic.”
Was this for me?? You never clicked reply. How on earth do you expect a rebuttal if you don’t click reply?
@ValhallaOutcast Yup. I'd rather see Switch gain more merit, and the people that own it become wiser, but that's just me.
I had no interest on ps4 so this isn't much of a letdown.
@MoonKnight7 its a heist game. The main point of the game is to plan and coordinate. You dont just go in and kill anything on site. Thats why voice chat is necessary for this game.
@diwdiws
I get why it’s important, I’ve just never been a fan. I’ve heard way too many kids scream at the mothers for chicken fingers, so I don’t use it. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest that it’s not there.
@MoonKnight7 The comment that @SLIGEACH_EIRE made was for both you and @tjhiphop, but he often doesn't have the common courtesy to tag the people he's responding to. It's quite passive-aggressive.
@JimmySpades
Yeah I figured as much.
@sword_9mm Skryrim, Bayonetta and Breath of the Wild say hello.
While I agree its an odd move to port an online centric title to a platform that isnt a full online package just yet, the Switch is far from 'weak'.
If online ever gets stronger, I'd be keen to see how Borderlands would turn out on the Switch. It was very playable on Vita.
@SonOfVon probably to keep the size of the game under 16GB so they wouldn’t have to pay for a more expensive cartridge given that you can only buy them in 4gb, 8gb, 16GB, 32gb, and 64gb variants... and the more the publishers have to pay for the carts, the more we have to pay for the game in return. It’s the one downside of the switch, and sadly, nintendo requires the prices of the physical and digital versions of games to be identical, so that’s why they probably went with the year old patch/dlc/updates. I do imagine they will bring it up to speed in further updates tho.
This one will be a pass for me tho due to the repetition and lack of a solid crew of switch buddies to rob the AI with 😞
@Jawessome anyone who finds the switch to be “weak” is an ignorant hater fanboy who wishes that the console the blindly give cash to could be as amazing as the one Nintendo has given us gamers. The switch will only continue to be better as times goes on with a huge stable of great games continuing to release, as well as ungraded hardware (that will be backwards compatible) in another year or two. I certainly am happy with my purchase and look forward to reaping the rewards or the success that Nintendo has enjoyed and given its fans! All haters can eat a hot dog!
A solid 7 is always a good thing.
Never got round to playing the second one so just bought it for the switch. So I am glad about this review.
EDIT: It plays great.
@Jawessome
oh i'm enjoying bayonetta right now.
i'm really wanting a tegra 2 model. i really really hope N goes the MS way and upgrades this sucker every 2 years. unless nvidia drops the ball.
honestly i'd have loved to see them partner with apple for the arm chips and steam for eshop/online gaming/chat.
When even was Payday 1?!
I had this on pre-order with Game.co.uk and it was sent to me the day before any reviews were published so I couldn't cancel the pre-order once I had read the reviews. It arrived yesterday and I returned it to my local Game store today.
The lack of any voice chat was the reason this went back. I knew that the Switch doesn't directly support voice chat through the Switch but I thought it would have used the Nintendo smartphone app that Splatoon 2 uses. I don't have anyone local to play this with so would have had to play online with strangers and voice chat would have been a must.
I may re purchase it sometime in the future when Switch OS has been updated to include voice chat (Which I honestly believe will happen - probably for the launch date of the online service), and by then maybe the game itself will be patched with the up to date content. Shame as I was looking forward to this having never played it on any other format, but its not worth the £59-99 right now.
@jimi: No sarcasm. You responded to me decently. I appreciate that.
I'm rather impressed how lovely the controls feel. Normally you are wrestling with that dead zone in the middle of the analogues which makes fps a little twitchy for me, but this game is really subtle. Nice. (But I still hope gyro aim gets patched in sometime!)
@MFD
That's not true at all.
Games in poor condition have done terrible on Switch. MXGP3, RIME, Monster Energy Supercross... even Fe. Don't kid yourself with these silly notion's about people buying anything just because it's portable. No. What portability does, is it makes people want games they may have already played. It does not make them want a crap game or a game that runs like crap. That said, because they are portable versions, people are willing to accept a game that runs at a portable level i.e. They are not going to skip DOOM simply because it doesn't run like the PS4 version- it's a portable version and portable expectations will be maintained.
As for this game, the "state of the game" is that it looks good and runs well. There are some downsides such as not being current yet with other console versions, and there's definitely the glaring issue of no voice chat which pretty much kills it for anyone who is only interested in online play. BUT. That does not kill it for everybody. People who want to play single player or local multiplayer aren't going to care. And I don't think anyone gives a crap if it's got 278 missions instead of 312 or whatever the numbers are. Being "behind" makes for great fanboy fodder but in the real world, as long as you're getting your money's worth that's what people are going to care about most. Not "but person B gets 10 extra missions, I refuse to buy it, HMFFF"
Some food for thought there because this whole notion that Switch owners are just a bunch of morons who buy anything has got to stop. People buy what they want to play, and if somebody is interested in this game you don't have the right to condescend toward them, or bully people out of buying games you want to see fail by insulting anyone would would dare make a purchase. Millions of people bought this very game on PS4 despite being behind the PC version, and I don't see anyone calling them idiots. Stick with buying what you want, and let others buy what they want. No insults, no sweeping generalizations toward every Switch owner (or any Switch owner, or any console owner of any kind- doesn't matter if it's one person or 1 million people, it's wrong and offensive, and just straight up unfounded).
@JaxonH I'd have no problem with people buying what they want, if it weren't that we'd both be using the same device for different purposes.
I've explained my stance on this plenty of times, and I remain adamant that hybrid in it's current form is not the right way forward.
And on a side note, I see people clamouring for unreasonable games these days, on account of DOOM running on Switch. All for portability. I just get so sick of that entitlement that it brings that it makes me want to vomit. Give people one taste of games everywhere, and they want everything that way, soon enough game experiences will be downgraded to fit on Switch, and prioritized that way. Well excuse me, but I'd rather we still get good game experiences, and not having everything cast aside for portability's sake.
But at the end of the day, I'm a minority and the majority just wants their convenience. Fair enough, I'll just watch the boulder roll down the hill.
@MFD
Doesn't matter if people are using the device for a different purpose- you always have to respect what other people buy and want. If it doesn't work out to your liking I guess that's just life.
I know you believe it's not the right way forward and I respect your belief, but understand that a whole heck of a lot of people are embracing it with both arms, and you should respect their beliefs as well. People love the Switch and that's a great thing. If it's not your thing it's not your thing. No product caters to everyone. But this one caters to a whole lot more people than a straight laced console with no third-party support would.
And yes, of course people want more games portable. No more entitlement then you wanting games nonportable! You want them one way and they wanted another but you label everyone else as entitled? That's completely unfounded. People could just as easily call you entitled for wanting nonportable versions. It's not entitlement, it's just... preference. People prefer to have copies of games that can be played any way they want, and so that is what they desire. As consumers, that is the product they desire. There's nothing wrong with that and it has absolutely nothing to do with entitlement. Make you vomit? That's absolutely ridiculous. Flu makes you vomit. Consumers saying "hey, I like playing games anyway I want and I want more of that" is just the free market. If that makes you sick then you better go buy a lifetime supply of Alka-Seltzer because you're in for a rough ride.
You'd rather get "good game experiences", but practically everyone else would rather get experiences that are both good and portable. Sorry, but you're just outnumbered. If you want something else then speak with your wallet and go buy and play another console. If you just want Nintendo games and you're upset that those aren't in super high definition top notch graphics then, respectfully, tough luck. Because that's not what everyone else wants. And it's not like Switch is an NES... it's more powerful than last generation consoles so... it's not that drastic of a difference. Let's not pretend the Switch is like playing an NES here...
All this to say, you are free to have your beliefs and your preferences and I will most definitely respect them. I get it, you'd rather have a power console. Duly noted. But that in no way justifies insulting others for games they want to buy.
@JaxonH Look, all of the above I can live with, if it was a separate device. The fact that it isn't is what makes this the way it is. I have a 3DS, I have followed it's line since Gameboy, and it does what I'd want out of a handheld.
If Nintendo was still making home-consoles as well, I'd never have even brought up this topic. Because now, we have a handheld dictating everything home-console as well, and that's where I go "Hold up, that's not good" as that means that all those accepting portable quality also dictate that those that play it docked have to as well, and I don't know about you, but that isn't fair to me.
I am hoping the game sells well so there will be continuing support. Doom has a lot of people playing online on Switch.
@JimmySpades and let's not forget he's "questioning" the score the reviewer (who played the game and gave it a subjective score) gave without having any idea of the game, since he's admitted he never owned any non-Nintendo consoles ever. Yet here he is, commenting on each and every game, passing out his wisdom.
Metacritic down to 63. Basically the crappiest version and the most expensive.
@MFD
It's not about fair, it's about business. Nintendo's handhelds have always outsold their home Systems. Sony and MS usually outsell Nintendo home systems so there's no point wasting money competing. They can't support two machines, so of course they're going to prioritise the handheld part of their business.
They've found a sweet spot with hardware that is both their most powerful home System and the most powerful handheld by anyone ever, at a price that sells. The market has spoken and when it comes to Nintendo home systems, has been speaking very clearly for some time now.
Hey All, anyone up for some heists let me know and message me as it is a great game!
@electrolite77 And what is the problem with a separate home-console system that still uses the same cartridges?
@MFD
What would be the point? They're selling millions of something that doubles up as a home System anyway. Why spend extra money on developing and manufacturing an extra SKU that if more powerful would mean extra development cost on games, split the market, confuse their marketing message and all to hit a market that may not exist in meaningful numbers.
@electrolite77 Majority rules, I get it. Just recognize that the docked can use a serious amount of work and loving, and that there isn't equilibrium in the Switch as a handheld, which bothers me as user of the underdog mod.
Lots of negative comments. I'll be one of the only positives in the negative sea.
Getting 2 copies of this today. I've put over 100 hours on other versions (X360 and PS4), and I'm looking forward to starting again on the switch. My situation is unique in that I've got another person to play this with in local co-op, so voice chat isn't an issue.
This is a very fun and satisfying game, but you really need someone you know to play with. It wouldn't work well to play with strangers due to the constant communication needed to orchestrate perfect heists (which is the ultimate goal really). So if you have someone to play local co-op with then this game is a must try. If you are going to play solo or with strangers, you are better off trying other versions (like the PS4) or skipping it altogether.
