After absolutely nailing its first shot at a Metroid adventure with 2017's Metroid II 3DS remake Samus Returns, Nintendo has given MercurySteam another bite at the cherry in which they've chosen to retain many of the unique gameplay elements of their last outing whilst adding a bunch of stealth. It's a risky manoeuvre, adding a completely new mechanic like this to such a well-loved and heavily scrutinised franchise but, we're pleased to report, the Spanish developer has handed in a phenomenal new entry in the series that we just cannot stop playing. Metroid Dread is fantastic.
Of course, one of the most exciting things in the build up to this brand new outing for Samus Aran has been that it's the first game we're getting a chance to play on Nintendo's fancy new OLED Switch, and we really can't think of a better title with which to introduce that amazing screen. This is a properly gorgeous adventure, with each of the various biomes of the planet ZDR that you puzzle and blast your way through coming with its own with unique and wonderfully detailed enemy types, flora and fauna, some truly stunning lighting effects and other fancy graphical bells and whistles.
There's so much detail here, from the prehistoric creatures you'll spot wandering around in the background, to creepy little terrors who flash by in vents and the mist-filled E.M.M.I areas, drained as they are of colour in an effort to ramp up the tension until you've finally taken the residing robotic terror down. Samus herself has also never looked better and the exquisite amount of detail in her animations make her feel better than ever to control around the game's labyrinthine structures. As her abilities and weapon collection expand exponentially throughout the campaign, Samus finds herself clambering around on magnetised pads with her brand new Spider Magnet, swinging around with a grappling hook, dodging through enemy attacks with a fancy new Flash Shift capability and much more. We really don't want to spoil anything of the story or much of the unlockable abilities for you here (the surprise of finding all this stuff for yourself is half the fun after all), but rest assured everything you do in Metroid Dread — every enemy you parry into oblivion, every dodge, slide, grapple and rocket round — looks and feels fantastic. It's slick, fast-paced stuff that never drops a frame as it delivers breathlessly exciting encounters, including some properly screen-shaking boss battles that do a great line in pretty revolting, OTT body horror. There are some real grotesqueries to take out here.
In terms of returning mechanics, MercurySteam has brought back the excellent parry from Samus Returns and it feels more robust here. Moving through rooms packed full of bugs and beasties and using this parry to devastate every last one of them with a single overcharged riposte is glorious stuff, too, properly satisfying action that makes you feel like a truly badass space ranger. The Aeion power source also makes a reappearance from 2017's game and you'll need to juggle your gauge in order to make use of all of your defensive and offensive capabilities when you need them most. With this heady mix of brand new abilities and returning stalwarts, Metroid Dread feels like the most feature-packed entry in the series to date, Samus now has a huge array of moves at her disposal and it always feels as though you've got a ton of choice in how to explore and move around your richly detailed surroundings.
And that's all before we even mention the all-new stealth side of things. In all honesty, we weren't 100% sure how this aspect of Metroid Dread was going to work out. There was definite potential for it to be a little frustrating, but the tense face-offs and encounters you have with E.M.M.I. robots are standout moments in the game. Each of ZDR's zones has a designated E.M.M.I. area that you'll repeatedly have to manoeuvre through, but you need to be quiet, use your cloaking ability, watch your Aeion gauge and creep carefully. It's hugely atmospheric as the large red glowing signature of a nearby hunter turns up on your in-game map, as your hear doors open behind you with robotic bleeps and bloops, or dodge desperately out of the way of the E.M.M.I.'s ever-searching motion tracker.
There's also a really nice sense of catharsis after having been locked in these drawn out cat-and-mouse games — and after dying countless times because you got caught — when you finally get to temporarily supercharge your lasers and return to each of the seven E.M.M.I. areas fully equipped and more than ready to blast the plate armour of their heads and kill them once and for all.
Once Metroid Dread enters its final stages it goes ahead and throws a procession of pretty tough boss foes your way. We won't go into any detail for fear of spoilers, but some of these can take a fair few replays to get right, and it speaks to the quality of the combat here that we never really got annoyed with dying. As the game itself explains, all attacks can be avoided, no matter how impossible it seems, so digging in and watching and learning and anticipating how bosses attack and move around will get you there in the end. It all feels so beautifully well-balanced; tough but not impossible, satisfying as hell when you pull off a kill and oh-so super-slick to look at that it's quite simply a joy to hit restart and go again and again.
With regards to secrets and collectibles and all that good old Metroid stuff, it's all present and correct, and you'll find you may need to replay this one multiple times if you're to pick up each and every one of the upgrades that await you in the various regions of your adventure. There's some nice surprises in store for fans of the franchise, an interesting story that very cleverly doesn't get in the way of the action at any point and an absolutely superb soundtrack underscoring the whole thing. All of the classic Metroid sounds that you expect are here, now tweaked and modernised and accompanied by some cracking new audio.
In both docked and handheld modes on the new OLED Switch, we didn't suffer any frame rate issues whatsoever, no matter how hectic some of the boss fights got later in the game, and that new screen really does just make everything pop here. The contrast between colourfully rich and vibrant areas and the dark and fuzzy E.M.M.I. gauntlets in this game is outstanding when played on this new hardware, making for a visually rich, sumptuous and highly detailed experience that's complimented even further by the console's enhanced audio and some great use of rumble support.
We haven't played Dread on a regular Switch yet, but even if the screen doesn't pop as much on a non-OLED screen, it'll still remain a handsome and supremely smooth experience regardless. We didn't run into a single bug or technical snafu across the entirety of its roughly 12-hour running time; the whole package just reeks of that top Nintendo quality you expect from the company's tent pole releases.
Overall then, Metroid Dread really does feel like a hugely successful modernisation of the franchise. It's everything we love about the older games, all of the good stuff from MercurySteam's last outing and a bunch of new mechanics that make for an incredibly exciting, absorbing, fun and challenging romp across ZDR. This is an incredibly sleek and satisfying return for one of video games' true greats and one of the very, very best action games you can buy for your Switch.
Conclusion
Metroid Dread is a triumphant return for both Samus Aran and developer MercurySteam. This is a super-slick, hugely entertaining and exquisitely designed entry in the Metroid franchise that plays better than anything we've seen from the series so far. With a bunch of fantastic new abilities, super tense and enjoyable stealth sections, plenty of great big boss fights and a story that fans will definitely enjoy, we can't really see how this one could have been any better. Best Metroid game ever? This could be the one.

Whoohoooo! Yes!!!
Super hyped! Oh my goodness...
Can't wait till friday gonna go buy it the same day.
Get. In. My. Veins
Amazing, can't wait for my copy to arrive
THIS is what I like to see! Friday can't get here soon enough!
Scrolled straight to the bottom without reading a word, or looking at scores. Lol. No wants no spoilahs!
Thank you for the review.
I'll admit I kinda skimmed through it for being afraid of even the minimal spoilers.
Here hoping I agree on the 10/10
Ha! Your only negative is a positive in my book, so Friday can't come soon enough!
Wow I knew it would be good but did not expect it to be this good, I probably will be running out and buying it this weekend, Metroid is back and in great form! Very happy.
I feel like Nintendo life has gotten harder on Indies and 3rd party games and way, way more lenient on Nintendo games in the past few years.
This and SS HD don't deserve the praise they've gotten.
@Strumpan Same here lol, I love tough boss fights. Can't wait
I’m calling ‘Game Of The Year’ on this. Amazing!
"And the E.M.M.I. goes to..."
Nintendo Life. Again.
@gojiguy How are you determining that this game doesn't deserve its praise before it even comes out?
Best use of Adam in a video game since Bioshock.
I've become a huge fan of the Metroidvania genre over these last 10 years or so, so it's so exciting to finally play a new game from the grandaddy of it all!
@gojiguy When is your Metroid Dread review going live, by the way?
Still can't quite get my head around Metroid 5 releasing this week. All the years of waiting are almost over. Welcome back, Samus. You were missed.
Imagine if this was given a 5 or a 6 out of ten!? Or even a 7. Thankfully not the case Looking forward to it even more now. Will be first game I play on the Switch OLED!
Glad to hear it's good! I had a feeling.
As long as the boss fights are simply challenging and not overly drawn out and tedious like some of the bosses from the Prime games, I'm fine with the difficulty.
I can't wait until this game arrives on Friday!
My Switch has been extremely under utilized since I scored a Series X and a PS5. I am so happy that my return to the console will be for Metroid Dread.
I recently got Tales of Arise on Xbox, and it will take a back seat to this!
Looking forward to this!
@gojiguy, I’ve seen quite a few indie games get a 10 on here though.
Glad the boss fights test the players - that's the right decision for a metroid game and especially one called Dread!
So looking forward to playing the game now!
I'm not surprised by the score but rather relieved. The hype for Friday is real. LFG
2 weeks until pay day. It’s gunna be a long 2 weeks but my god it will be worth it!
Cannot wait!!
I have so much to do this weekend. Might not get to any of it
I've been playing it for the last few days and mostly agree. Not sure I could put it over super Metroid or prime 1, but it's definitely the best Metroid game in a very long time. It's not like some quick slapped together holdover until prime 4, it's legit pure Metroid. Way better than Samus returns
I now officially am indifferent to any delays in Prime 4 development. This was the one we were waiting for all along.
It had to be really.
Come on 365 Games and send it to me now !!!
I am so excited to play this game! Thanks for the review!
10? Other M got 9/10 and I really didn't like that so taking this with a pinch of salt.
I’m excited to own what seems like another Nintendo classic! Looking forward to playing this myself.
YES! EVERYTHING I DREAMED IT COULD BE
@gojiguy How did you already play and complete Metroid Dread?? 🤔 Surely your take is an informed decision?
I love the game(never played a Metroid game before, only metroidavian games like hollow knight etc.) but I am baffled at the game length 12 Hour is too low for a game selling at 49£ , probably I will buy when Nintendo will do her characteristic 33% discount, what I want now is something much longer to play because I can only afford one game this month and probably will be dying light (if the porting is good) because of his length can exceed 100 oh hours with all the staff to do and DLC packs
"Some boss fights may really test you to breaking point before you crack them"
Good. I want the bosses to be challenging. Fusion's bosses being tough is what made beating them really rewarding.
Anyways great review. Bring on Friday!
I'm pressing that X to doubt pretty hard right now.
Really impressed with how MercurySteam has apparently evolved as a developer.
Anyway, sounds good. I won't be getting it at launch (for reasons), but I'm definitely looking forward to playing it soon.
I haven’t played this game but I sniffed the promotional poster in my local game store and it smelled like any other promotional poster.
5/10
Anyone who says otherwise smells of bias with emphasis on the B and the S. I trust my nose more than any so-called ‘games journalists’. If you really thought it was a 10/10, you wouldn’t have written this review because you’d be too busy playing the game.
Also, 10/10 isn’t even possible because nothing is perfect except my sense of smell and my commitment to writing inane, grating, conspiracy-tinged comments under every review.
Loving it. Few hours in. At Kraid boss but struggling with only 2 health upgrades found, looking in all the hot areas with Varia suit for upgrades before I take him on again. It really doesn't hold your hand at all which is a blessing for me but maybe a curse for newcomers. Stunning.
Mmm, I'm sure that this is a really good game. But this review really reads like marketing material.
Why even mention the OLED Switch? What has that got to do with the game?
Don't you dare pull another Xenoblade Chronociles on me with this one NintendoLife!
"Some boss fights may really test you to breaking point before you crack them"
@aresius @andyg1412 Samus Returns on 3DS was also given a 10/10 by NL. However, this game does sound like it is better and probably justifies the higher price tag.
Now I'm worried...
you'd see, this franchise got me into gaming like 30 years ago and while I'm sure I'm going to enjoy this game a 10 rate makes me feel a little worried.
Let's se how bias @Nintendolife can get (would love to be proved otherwise)
Take a shot every time they mention the new oled screen.
@gojiguy Mate. Have you played it yet? Come on now.
@BlackenedHalo just a little joke as I had nothing bad to say!
Definitely pumped to get my hands on this.
Is a 10 good?
jk. That's great news. Thanks for the review PJ O'Reilly!
@Bluecup Reminded me of the Brought to you by Carl's Jr guy in Idiocracy.
Looks good. But tbh the graphics are dated.
No, seriously, it looks like a PS3 amazing indie game. And I know, it sucks to say the truth, but it is not like Super Mario Odyssey or Zelda BOTW that were system sellers and made a lot of people say "wowww, that's an amazing Zelda game, wowww Mario in a real city (Metro Kingdom).
I'll grab it later, believe me, I'm a big fan of the series, but considering everything else is perfect in this game, just looking at the graphics, it's definitely not a 10/10 in my opinion. And I know a lot of people agree with me.
I'm sure it's a great game but since Animal Crossing: New Horizons I've become skeptical of overly hyped games with perfect scores.
wow- that is high praise indeed!
After seeing the reviews roll in, I'm even more hyped to play this than I already was. Been a long wait since Fusion for the next new 2D entry but it's finally here. Great stuff.
@jancotianno Graphics don't matter, gameplay matters.
My copy is downloaded and ready to go! Was going to wait until I woke up on Friday to play but this review has confirmed that it'll be a midnight start for me!
Nice review, just gave it a listen on the YT channel. Honestly, it's everything I could've hoped for so no complaints here. I am wondering how it'll look on a regular switch though since this was done with an OLED. Then again, I guess I'll know in 2 days 🙂
@Dpishere Agreed! This makes me stoked to give it a try myself!
The hype is real! My copy shipped out this morning along with Doki Doki Literature Club. I can't wait to play both games! Tales of Arise and Alan Wake Remastered will be put on hold for a while. Now if only my Switch OLED would ship already 😒.
Jolly good!! Wish i had finished any Metroid game...
@Damo “When is your Metroid Dread review going live, by the way?”
Yeah damo, cause only your reviews matters. We should bow and pay 60$ because it’s a ten given by the great reviewers. 🙄
@PJOReilly they're clearly an animal crossing time traveler who got his review copy from Tom nook. #IfYouAintCheatinYouAintTryin
All aboard the Metroid Hype!!!!!!!!!. 10/10.
@MrGrim HADES
Bravo to Mercury Steam! Now for 3 more days of agony!
@nintendolife you should submit your score to Metacritic. Currently it is at an 88
@Damo Same time Samus Returns gets a fair review that addresses its major issues. Sorry, it ain't a 10 either. It's a 6, maybe a 7.
So I gotta take any Nintendo review on this site with a huge grain of salt.
For those who said it’s impossible to know how the game plays and looks, it was leaked 2 days ago, so some might already played a bit from the game.
I remember when every game journalist lied for cyberpunk that it’s the best game ever, and then we all saw how that end up.
Glad to see it turned out well. NOW I am 100% buying it
@Maxz lol you sound butthurt that Nintendo can get a 10/10 it's all good lol
Downloaded and ready for Friday
@gojiguy so you played it?
@Simplefolk If graphics matter more than gameplay to you, I don't know why you even bother gaming. You'd be better off buying art books and such, rather than games.
@PoliticallyIncorrect "Graphics don't matter, gameplay matters."
Gameplay is more important (the most important factor maybe), but graphics matter. In this case, a lot. Don't fool yourself with this.
One thing that people who review games must do right away before writing a review is to go and actually finish the game and only then give it a proper score.
Because we all know that the game could be amazing at its first 5-10 hours, but right after initial freshness and wow factor wears off - not many games keep their momentum and quickly lose their charm.
So all in all putting enough hours before judging it or finishing the game in case its rather short is a MUST for reviewer.
P.S. yes, I'm looking at that glorious 10/10 AC:New Horizons review score which is so misleading.
@jancotianno lol the games your talking is what mp4 is going to be lol
Oh boy, I am so hyped for this! Great review, this really does sound like it might just be the best metroid game! Can not wait!
@jancotianno Listen, I've been playing video games for the entire evolution of them. Graphics don't matter. When you grew up with Pong and the Atari 2600, knowing those were the best graphics you could get outside of an arcade machine, then I'll believe you're on to something.
Giving it a 10/10 so you can get on the accolades trailer?
@gojiguy mad because Nintendo jumped back in the game
Intentionally not reading the review as I want to experience Dread for myself, but it sounds like we are in for a great time with this game!
@anynamereally SO true. I actually think that Animal Crossing: New Horizons deserves a review update, that should be more critical.
@PoliticallyIncorrect I'm 38 years old, I had a 386. My first console was an Atari.
Don't fool yourself.
Well, color this non-Metroid fan excited.
Oooh, a new people to add to my ignore list I see.
I actually don't want to read anything in this review or look at any pictures as I don't want anything spoiled even though I'm sure you've been careful about that. But I've played and loved every Metroid game so I'm happy I'll enjoy this one too.
@jancotianno Wow, it must be hard being 38! I'm impressed! I'm 51 and my first video game came out before the Atari 2600. Are you just as impressed as I? Graphics don't matter, gameplay does. Don't fool yourself.
I’m not sure this review really helps me decide, as I didn’t think the parry was “excellent” in Samus Returns, it was a pain that made even the basic enemies tedious and slowed traversal down. I wasn’t that impressed with that game overall either, it was good, but nowhere as good as other Metroid games (AM2R doing it better around the same time didn’t help either).
I’ll probably still be getting Dread, but hearing how much of Samus Returns has returned doesn’t fill me with confidence, especially as Samus Returns got a 10 as well.
@gojiguy you sir are a numpty!
Can't wait for Amazooooon
@anoyonmus The review is already on metacritic, it already contributes to the 88 score.
Super Metroid is the best Metroid ever made. From what I have seen of Dread, it's trying to be Resident Evil and not Metroid. I don't play Metroid for jump scares and "terror". I play it for exploration and adventure. Metroid Dread might be the first game of the franchise I pass on.
@PoliticallyIncorrect
See, unfortunately your experience with games are not longer than mine. We had the same first console.
Everything should be considered in a game. The sound fx, music, graphics, replayability, fun factor.
You can't give a game 10/10 if the music sucks or it doesn't have nice sound effects. That's the same with graphics. That's the same with many other factors. And don't try to bring in discussion the most important factor. It's clear. But the gameplay itself doesn't justify a 10/10.
It still looks like a dated game from an older generation.
Children - "graphics are all that matter"
Adults - "gameplay makes the experience"
@anoyonmus
A Short Hike also got a 10 here. I recall seeing others as well, but those are the first two that come to mind. For the people talking about length, it sounds about the same as other Metroid games. That’s fine with me - and 10 hours can feel like a lot more if the game is challenging. I’m playing CotM on Castlevania Advance Collection. My in game time is about 5 hours, and I beat HoD in 7 or so. But my Switch says I’ve played the collection for over 20 hours, and I know why. Lol
But really, not every game needs to be 50 hours. I’ll probably replay it enough that I surpass that time eventually, like with Link’s Awakening.
Quote “ We haven't played Dread on a regular Switch yet,”
Why not? Is this a review of the actual game, or a review of a Nintendo marketing thing where they gave you a switch with it on and made you play it with them watching over you? Basically a preview?
Looking forward to it arriving in post
@jancotianno We didn't have the same first video game console. Mine was the Odyssey. Not the one that came out after the 2600. The one that had plastic overlays you placed on your television screen and controlled a white block around the screen.
@Clammy i'm currently playing on a regular switch and so far concur just about everything in the review. there ya go
@clianvXAi My point was that the commentor was saying the game wasn't worth the score, so I assumed they'd actually played it.
What’s wrong with the gfx btw?
@Clammy Absolutely nothing imo.
@jancotianno perhaps the most dumb comment I’ve seen recently. So gameplay is a 10/10 but you can’t give it a 10? Surely that’s what matter most! You must hate the indie scene, shame as you will miss out on a lot of great games with such backward thinking.
Funny thing is that this game only exist to shut up people while they are making Metroid Prime 4.
@Crockin : I don’t doubt the game is good. I’m just a bit concerned about nintendolifes reviewing .. sounds like they’re doing a review based on some marketing event… which is a bit “iffy” for reviews if you ask me
Not even a 4/10 would have come between me and playing Metroid Dread.
But seeing the 10 is nice 😀
@PoliticallyIncorrect My first were Game & Watch during it's prime time. Then Commodore 64.
@moodycat
Samus Returns was awesome, what are you talking about.
@quinnyboy58 Exactly. Leave the game without sound, put it with a 3DS resolution.
Probably you'll say something like "oh... but in that case it will ruin the gameplay". Not really. The gameplay is the same.
That's why we have different scores. 7. 7.5, 8...
It's not like "Gameplay is 10/10, so if graphics and sounds are average, it keeps a 10/10". At least not in the real world.
The work from 3D designers and musicians should have the same honest review, since they are responsible for the game too.
@chipia yeah, totally.
I substract 1 or 2 from NL review scores on a daily basis (lol), and frankly I think it's not that big of a deal. We all know NL is a bit biased, but not that much, it's okay.
But with that AC:NH review I had to substract 3 points from it to make it a bit "down to earth" objective score the game really deserves.
Now any 10/10s from NL make me suspicious and makes me think that reviewer either didn't gave a game enough attention or was just blinded by the "new shiny thing"... OLED in this case, I suppose
The conspiracy theorists have arrived! Haven't you heard that 10 does NOT mean perfect? It means a masterpiece.
Edit: besides, not all outlets have given it a perfect score. So, go ahead and pick the score fitting to your bias before playing the game.
@Clammy i believe they are reviewing the experience as it was presented to them, on the oled switch. It's the same hardware, so it wouldn't really make a difference anyway. So far I probably wouldn't go full perfect 10, but I can confirm that what is written by the author is accurate.
Just to put in perspective here: Fifa 22 in this website was 2/10.
Great graphics, great gameplay.
@jancotianno well it was also lacking content
@moodycat
I don't know of every game they've made, but I had a ton of fun with Samus Returns. So if this game is in the same style, I'm excited for my copy to arrive
@chipia ah ok
12-hour campaign. I love Metroid and really want to get my hands on this one, but full price is too much for this one. I already made that mistake with Link´s Awakening. It needs to be at least +25h to justify the price (especially living in South America with local currencies).
@Ventilator I used to make video games on the Commodore 64. Used machine language (MLX) and Basic back then.
Whether you agree (without having played the game in most cases) that it deserves a 10 or not, it's clearly not a shambles of a game and is going to be a decent Metroid experience, so why all butthurt?
Awaiting my pre-order eagerly, playing Super Metroid in suspenders.
Really happy I got the collectors edition which I will never open and only stare at then sell for an exorbitant amount of money on an overvalued auction site in 2050
@Controller-Drift I agree, 12hours seems too short for an expensive 2D game. But if there is serious replay value or bonus content I may bat an eye.
@Bobb I did the same thing the moment I saw "new ability"
The big question is, will I have time to finish Fusion before Friday?
@PoliticallyIncorrect That's cool. Did you make any of the commercial games on it?
@Ventilator No, I didn't. I was in like 8th grade then if I remember correctly.
@jancotianno Did...did you...read the Fifa review? Because while it may look and play well, there are very valid reasons to give it a 2/10.
Did we expect anything less from the review? Anyway, super hyped! I hope they drop it earlier in my mail. Who knows.
But it must be said: If you hate sidescrollers with the analogue stick, the counter, Samus returns or Mercury steam in general you should not apply.
Also the lenght, it doesn't seem to be much bigger then a regular Metroid. Though there's still the collectables I guess, and it always takes me longer then your average reviewer. I'll take my time.
Its also nice to see that Nintendo finally markets the game, and its also needed: They should all be on board before Prime 4 arrives! That could potentially be even greater, can you imagine?
@gojiguy didn't we just get a 9/10 indie yesterday?
@jerichofr it's not like the two are mutually exclusive, lord knows other metroid games have had their shock and fear moments (the crocomire fakeout in super metroid, most SAX stuff in fusion, the sudden number jump in metroid II, various moments in prime)
The game seems to get just slightly lower scores from most other sites, even though it's still mostly 9/10. The common critique is "playing makes my hands cramp" (yeah, just like all switch games if you play it mobile. How about using the tv and the controller...) and "It's too hard, not enough hand holding". (What the... isn't this a positive? ) At any rate, I think it'll get something like 88 - 90 on metacritic. Since I love games where you can get lost and offer challenge, and since I play only on docked mode with a proper controller, this is insta-buy for me.
I'm a little concerned from some sources that say that when played in dock mode it struggles visually. Colours look a little washed out etc. Hope it's not true.
IGN didn't give it a 10 but a 9. I expect that is due to the level with water in it.
Oh dear, a certain someone will be along to tell you how wrong the review is and how you’ve only done it because of outside pressure and fear of the dreaded “fan boys”.
Colour me intrigued - I get the impression this might be too tough for some people though...plus I get the feeling this comment section might kick off when somebody wakes up...
@BenGrimm It....it's like you were reading my mind maaaan....
@Indielink The same valid reasons to explain why this is a great game but not a 10/10. To be fair, I was just talking about the dated graphics, but now I'm reading other comments, we are talking about a 12 hour campaign too. Probably an 8/10 or 8.5/10 (using the same criteria of other games).
I think it is a nice message for Nintendo: We love your games, we are not complaining about perfect graphics, but please, at least try to keep only one generation behind
@Indielink Looking at your reply, it looked like you ignored it, because you said the opposite of what i were thinking.
@anynamereally
Everyone is biased. Your own bias shows throughout your comments too, from giving an "objective" score, something not possible, to ACNH to assuming that a good score means the reviewer didn't spend enough time with a game.
I don't know why you conspiracy theorists can't find a reviewer whose bias matches your own, so you don't have to accuse others of being biased and dishonest while showing those exact same traits yourself.
Good thing that people working for this site started to be snarky towards such insinuations, because how often can you be accused of being a sell-out or whatnot?
@WiltonRoots
I was surprised they didn't comment yet. lol
@Ventilator I'll be totally straight, I'm not actually sure what you're getting at here.
@Rin-go
The game got 70 from 3 outlets, so the conspiracy theorists will likely trust those reviews above all others. The Metascore is 88 at the moment with about 50 reviews, most being 90's.
@Rin-go I'm not a conspiracy theorist, though.
This makes me Super Excited to fight the bosses, I love a challenge in Metroid games. And the score makes me very excited to be able to play this. I can't wait to be able to play it this Friday!
Okay I haven’t read the review, just the summary points and score. I want to go into the game knowing as little as possible.
My only concern is the mentioning of “mandatory stealth” (a feature I believe is purely detrimental to game design and offers no positives). Are these instant game overs when spotted? Or can you try to escape but it’s all a “c*ck up cascade” so basically just a drawn out game over? Or do you actually have the chance to escape and hide once more within the confines of a reasonable challenge?
@WiltonRoots
I’m sure we’re not the only ones lol.
On the subject of the campaign length I think it’s ok. I always take my time with these games and all the 2D Metroids have been short games. The fun is going back and improving each play through.
Good review but a poor comments section. What is wrong with people, the reviewer gave their opinion, you know 'theirs' it can be whatever they like and is not wrong.
@jancotianno FIFA got a 2/10 on Switch for being the literal same game it has been for the last five years. EA has been charging at minimum 40USD for a roster swap of a 360 game. That's why it got the score it has. It's why there are only two reviews from major publications listed on Metacritic. It's why last year's version has a Metacritic average of 33.
Metroid is by all accounts really freaking good. You might not like how Dread looks but others think it's clean and stylish, Eurogamer went as far as to call it one of the best looking games on Switch. And (no offense to NL) I trust their reviews more than the ones written here. Also a short length is not necessarily a bad thing. A short but well paced game is better than one with unneeded padding.
Can't wait for my copy this week, sadly I'm one of those customer that won't be receiving my Switch OLED on launch day.
@Indielink It's not a big deal, but i prefer to be an early adaptor.
I don't wait years just to get a better deal, or ending subs because of possible deals later.
You just misunderstood my comment.
Was there a battle royale to see who got to review this or was it done more amicably?
@BenGrimm Yep they said Skyward Sword HD was a 40hr game - nearly 70hrs in and I'm still wandering around leisurely...horses for courses.
Not really that impressed with the close-up screen shots. Hoping it gets a day-1 patch to clean things up. They look very low poly, flat and lack of anti aliasing looks like we're playing on low settings.
I hope it's good tho. I enjoyed Samus Returns a lot. They need more Metroid love on Switch, she's almost as forgotten as Luigi is.
Yessss day 1 here for sure!!
Can't wait! Mercury did it, I knew I could trust them!
@CactusMan This game is looking to ABSOLUTY be worth the hype!
Metroid Dread isn't a good enough name for this game. It should have been called Metroid HYPE!!
-ahem- Lame jokes aside, I'm really am hyped for the game. My favorite gaming franchise is finally getting the sequel to the mainline story I've been waiting almost two decades for!
I see the con as a joy
That con is actually a pro, boss battles should definitely test you on all the skills you have learned and prepare for the challenges ahead
Well I’ll have this day one. It looks like we don’t have another M on our hands this time. If this truly is as good as super or any of the gba games I’ll be playing this one for years.
@Ventilator I think you might have responded to the wrong comment originally. Cause the first comment I posted in here was about FIFA.
For what it's worth, I'd also prefer to be an early adopter. Waiting a year or two to save a few bucks isn't worth it for something I want.
@CactusMan I'm not A metriod diehard, but i'm really happy for them
Yay this is the moment I’ve been waiting for! Can’t wait…
I can't wait to get my copy, knowing that it will arrive in a few days feels so unreal...
I NEED this game injected into my veins yesterday
Waiting on my amiibo to ship!
Awesome! So glad I pre-purchased it Digitally!!!
Goosebumps! Mail my copy already!!!!
What's with all the hate in the comments...? Why is people pissed for a METROID game getting the best score?? Come on! We have been waiting for something like this for ages, let us be happy! Complain if the Pokemon remakes get a 10, or Zelda SS, but not Metroid. We are talking about the return of one of the best videogame series there are out there, in great shape!
@anynamereally
It's all over your comments though.
I e only really played through 2D entries of Metroid and it's crazy how well super Metroid and Metroid Fusion hold up. Thought other m was decent, but let's get it. This tempts me to buy the OLED so I could have improved experience compared to my launch Switch, but that wholely unnecessary
@Indielink Life is too short to wait years until a 60$ game hits price tag of 5-10$.
I'm fine with waiting a few months for some games to drop in price, but thats because they are not worth full price.
Since discounts is barely a thing on Nintendo games, i do an exception. I buy Switch games i want on day 1 of release.
Not gonna wait 2 years until it get's only a 20% price drop.
@Kevember
"I don't agree with someone's opinion, so it's obviously wrong."
Why do you even come to the site and read the reviews then?
@the_beaver
And why is it okay to complain about one opinion but not another? It's one thing if a review states things that are factually incorrect, other than that it's just someone's opinion.
@Kevember I mean, there's plenty of Nintendo's last installments that they didn't consider the best like Mario Golf or the last Kirby game. Personally I do think that BOTW is the best and that kind of stuff simply varies even with professional reviewers too. Finding both BOTW and Odyssey as the best of the series isn't a niché opinion either, so that kinda indicates that even if they aren't your favourite, it does seem that they are the best for many so it's even weirder to suggest/imply that this site has a bias for the last entries.
@the_beaver
It seems that certain people here always get pissed off if a Nintendo game gets a good score. Makes me wonder why they're even here? To get butthurt?
@Kevember
BotW and Super Mario Odyssey really earned their praise, though. Those games got top scores all over the scene, not just Nintendolife.
@Rin-go my comments are there, I just don't see any conspiracy behind any of them. If you see it then that's probably something on your side, pal.
this is how I like my metroid…
Yeah. I stopped reading. Too much spoiled in the bit that i read. But im pumped for the game and glad it got such a positive review.
Maybe my game will arrive early in the mail?!?!
@Brumblescope That's if FedEx doesn't steal it.
I am overly excited about this game. Dread will make me smile and be terrified at the same time.
This is not a criticism of this review or the reviewer, but I've learned that even the most well-received games can fall flat for me and others. The end score isn't especially useful without the context of the review. I was not excited for this based on what was shown in the past due to personal concerns with the design. The mention of screen shaking is one, as I despite that. People who didn't like the last game's parry system likely won't be happy. Stealth haters won't be happy. I checked out IGN's video review which I liked because it pointed out possible issues(QTE moments in boss battles) while giving it a positive review(9/10). The issues I have seen sound significant to me. Checking out multiple reviews is good for something like this. My concerns remain. I know I'm particular. I hope people end up enjoying it, but I will be curious how it's received by the masses.
@jancotianno Stop trolling.
@ObeseChihuahua2 Perish the thought!
Eh. I didn’t think MS nailed Returns. They missed a lot of atmosphere bits to it. And honestly found it kind of same old same old.
Looking forward to 12:01AM PST Friday!
Amazing, so hyped, looks like all the haters were thoroughly wrong about this one!
As for Nintendolife giving Nintendo titles "only high scores," that is false. I've been a follower of this website for a long time, and there have been plenty of Nintendo titles that scored average or mediocre. Mario Golf: Super Rush, a game that just came out, got a pretty average score. Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey deserved their extremely high scores. They are two of the greatest games not just on the Switch, but in video gaming overall. There is always subjectivity to reviews, as one person's opinion can be different for another's.
@Ashunera84
So you see it as a "Joy-Con". 😆😆😆😆😐
@anynamereally
So insinuating that a good review means the reviewers didn't spend enough time with a game or that they only think well of games because they're new isn't a conspiracy? It's rather tame, but if you think insinuations like that aren't conspiracy theories how about libel then?
The scores are high.
One review suggests this game is best played on TV as it looks a lot better and plays better with a pro controller.
I can see what the reviewer means and just as some games fit the handheld well, others are better on a bigger screen.
Its sods law, release a new game with a new console and it looks better when not played on the new screen. Maybe we should have had a game that shows the best of the Oled display.
@the_beaver ive no idea why the hate. i see why it got the score and agree why. But I have never enjoyed the metroid games ive tried but just wasnt for me but I get why they are so popular. completed a few as sturbones ive started so ill finish. But i can see why it gets a 10. and ill still buy it in hope this one clicks.
Well, god damn it, I've already bought too many games recently. A human can go a few days without food and be fine right? As long as they have the best metroid game ever to play they will. Hey I need to lose pandemic weight anyway
@Brumblescope I'm still waiting for my Series S.
@the_beaver Sony and Xbox fan Boys can't stand how good Nintendo is doing.just to answer your question..my copy of metriod 5 is downloaded and wait for me
@jancotianno reviews are always subjective. PJ gave it a 10 not because it’s a perfect game, but because even the flaws didn’t sway him from giving it a 10. You might see bad music/graphics that made you not give it a 10, but you’re not the site’s reviewer lol
But I get you. Hades received 10’s everywhere, and that is a game I genuinely didn’t like. No amount of beautiful graphics and awesome music kept me from going over that frustration of dying over and over and starting from scratch. What is this, the 80s?
I'm not getting this till I finish super, but wow, its been a wile since a nintendo game as got the ten.
@PJOReilly is this is a good intro to the series? I know, I know... I'm super late. Still though, better late than never.
Very very good metroid game.
Period.
@Snatcher
You never played it?
Damn, i am so jealous at people that have not played it, i just miss that first feeling i had with this game, but still the game is awesome, my 9 year old son also live this game and finished it the first time with my help, then 3 times on his own, he told me it is his best game ever played.
Why so much debate here over the score? Independent minds people. Make your own judgement. Buy, don't buy. Embrace your free will.
Hadn't planned on getting this but I can get it for €10 if I trade in Mario Golf with Gamestop so I think I'm gonna take the plunge. Looking forward to trying it out now.
@Snatcher I tried playing Super but I just couldn't click with it. Probably just because it's an old game, the controls felt off to me.
Did I hear that right? 12 hours running time? How can a full price game get 10/10 with only 12 hours running time? No matter how well the game plays, the score can't be justified. Hollow Knight cost me a fraction of the price and is absolutely top quality and lasted over 100 hours! 12 hours is absolutely ridiculous and really poor value for money.
I will be picking this up over Christmas I think, can't quite afford it right now, but it has stiff competition in my house. Prime 2 has been in my top ten video games since launch, and I hope this lives up to that, cause Samus Returns really didn't do much for me, but Fusion really did... mixed bag, still hyped though!
@aSmilingMan @aSmilingMan I think it is! It's got that Metroid tough difficulty in making progess at points but it has also got lots of nice touches to help, including a really useful map that guides you quite a bit when you need it.
Congratulations Mercury Steam!
I'm not the biggest Metroid fan, but I loved their work on the 1st Castlevania LoS game, it was amazing! The 3DS was was pretty good too, along with their past Metroid game. I can't speak on LoS 2, it's been backlogged and I never made it very far into the game.
@ObeseChihuahua2 oh wow. that stinks. sorry that happened chihuahua. a friend of mine had it happen with a graphics card, too. not cool.
@gojiguy Lucky guy! You got an advance copy and played it from start to finish?
You should write your own more 'balanced' review.....
@PJOReilly awesome! Thank you! The difficulty doesn't scare me, it was mostly story coherence that I was worried about. Seems like it could be a self contained experience from what you wrote.
@aSmilingMan Yep, no worries in that regard as you get a little catch up at the start.
Word on the street is that it looks blurry in docked mode. Thats disappointing.
@PJOReilly awesome! Thank you so much for answering. I have been reading your work for years now. Thanks for what you do!
@aSmilingMan Thank you for reading, and cheers!
Why are there already 4 user reviews with an average 8.8 rating? I mean, why do you let users review a game they've not even played yet? 🤷♂️
@michellelynn0976 no trolling at all. I was very clear in my arguments. Since the first post I've made it clear that it is a game I may enjoy in the future. Discuss a biased review is not anything near trolling. People get crazy listening to good arguments explaining why it is 88/100, 9/10, and saying you have to ignore every problem and consider it a 10/10 because it has good gameplay and it is metroid.
@James1010uk it's common place. If you want bang for your buck, RPGs are the way to go.
Value is very much an individual's opinion. I'm happy to pay full price for a memorable experience.
I look at a 12 hour game as comparative value to 5 trips to the cinema for the same price, same amount of entertainment.
Does the 12 hour playtime also include the replaying of a section after dying, or is it really the net time, i.e. without repeats due to game over?
Always entertained by comments from those who have never touched this game complaining about how the score is too high.
Advice to those people: Cope harder
@Thatsalie it's a 10/10, get over it. Let's pray that Nintendo consider this the base for their future games in the market.
Well, this score is no surprise, since "Samus Returns" got the same and that game hadn't seen nearly half the hype of "Metroid Dread".
I can't help, but to be very skeptical, though, because I found "Samus Returns" to be well crafted, but rather conventional, unimaginative, too pandering to the legacy of "Metroid Prime" and eventually too boring to finish it.
I will buy "Dread" nevertheless, because the "Metroid"-franchise is such a staple of my gaming life and I want to support it. And of course I still hope to really enjoy it.
I wish everybody, especially the ones, who are really hyped, that to them this is the game they've hoped for and that you all will have a great time with it.
@Kevember Based on what? I think that you might be basing it on the way that you personally felt about them as both were expected games by many. Same applied to Star Fox Zero in the Wii U and other examples. Besides, as they told you, many sites, many reviewers, many gamers in general felt really positive towards those games.
I feel this game will be too difficult for me, I’m an average gamer ability wise at best.
@Indielink @Ventilator Used on EBay is about the best alternative after a couple of months (or after the Holidays). I got Link’s Awakening for < $45 (including shipping & taxes) probably a month after launch.
@Duncanballs As I said Hollow Knight lasted over 100 hours, that's not an RPG and was developed by a very small team. Tropical Freeze took me over 40 hours to complete, I could go on. These are quality games with absolutely no filler content. 12 hours is so disappointing, bordering on shameful.
Are people really complaining about the length? Minus botw, just about every Nintendo game is 10-15 hours to finish, and that includes super Metroid and Metroid prime. Where have yall been? It's been this way for like 30 years
@Brumblescope It's cool. My One S is still working, anyway.
@James1010uk honest question for you or anyone here. How long do you want a game to be? 50+++++++ hours? Like the Witcher 3? If that's the case, 90% of you won't even come close to finishing it. Hell, I wouldn't. I don't have that time anymore.
I noticed you mentioned. Forty hours for tropical freeze. Were you trying to 100% complete it? That game does not take that long. Were you dying every two seconds?
@James1010uk shameful is a bit strong but that is your opinion and you are entitled to it.
Everyone places a different value on things. In my opinion I expect that I will not feel short changed.
Was there truly any doubt that this game would be great? I've never even played a Metroid game before, and I don't even think I will play this one, but I've heard nothing but great things about the vast majority of Metroid games.
After all the Metroid hype I recently started Super Metroid for the first time on NSO. Its pretty fun. I'll play through that and then decide if I can wait for a sale on Dread or feel the need to buy it immediately.
@Kevember
I can read just fine.
@jancotianno
To argue that a review of a game you haven't even played is biased is very much troll behaviour.
@Tandy255 I got Links Awakening for 28 bucks 1 month after release in a local store. Xenoblade Chronicles Remake for 30 bucks 2 months after release on sale in local store. Similar for other Switch games.
I live in a country where things ages fastest on the planet. Norway.
@James1010uk
Should 100+ hour games cost 100 then?
I can understand wanting the most bang for one's bucks, but to view games as hours per Dollar is bizarre. Someone might've bought HK, played for an hour to not touch it again, while the same person might keep replaying MD for optimised times. What money was better spent then?
@gojiguy TBF, they've played it and you haven't.
@Rin-go you don't need to play to see the graphics and hear the music with so many gameplays on youtube.
So it’s one point better than your Other M review. That’s nice.
So Samus Returns in a game that is a Fusion of great gameplay and atmosphere with stealth segments that induce Dread into the player, it is a Prime example of how to bring back a series gamers love.
We won't talk about that Other M
😜
@Krysus you could have read the review. He didn't even mention Samus getting her leg stuck in the door, or the bionic leg.
@jancotianno
And? That doesn't change the fact that you haven't played it, contrary to the reviewer.
"I watched videos, so I'm an expert." lol
@Meteoroid
Yeah I enjoyed it.
I agree, If they didn't force in the Wii gimmicks it would have been better.
Still enjoyed, no where near as much as the others but certainly not as bad as everyone else makes it out to be.
No offense but...you gave Metroid MOM a freakin' 9...
and you guys think Fusion is the best Metroid ever....
...so yyyyeahhh...I don't trust your judgment.
@Meteoroid LOL no dude, sorry.
As a non-metroid game it's pretty mediocre and forgettable.
Add Metroid lore and gameplay and is a bad Metroid game.
And saying "muh wii gimmickz" is a wore out 10 year-old excuse by now. Knock it off.
@James1010uk Tropical Freeze is only around 11 hours long.
How long it takes to get through a section can easily extend a game's length, whether it be from dying repeatedly or getting lost, both of which are commonplace in Metroidvanias for most people.
There should be an eShop discount for NSO members (for all first-party titles). Like 30% off.
@Krysus If you didn't even look at the score because you don't want to be spoiled, why didn't you just not click on the article...?
Everybody dumps on Other M, but that was a good game, unfortunately they just messed up the story and made Samus out to be weak. If I remember correctly, she only got her powers back when she bent over backwards for Adam. Spoiled the game, but everything else was good.
Whether this game is better than Super Metroid or not will depend on my judgement.
On the 12-hour running time: it's worth noting that Metroid games are big on replayability. Super is about as long, but obviously I've quadrupled that amount just in replays. Opportunities for sequence-breaking and improving runs are everywhere and the game is built around this loop.
By all accounts, Dread follows suit. From Nintendo's Metroid Dread site: "The Super Metroid game can be said to offer the greatest flexibility for exploration in the series. You can enjoy similar flexibility in the Metroid Dread game, depending on how you take advantage of your abilities. You might be able to find ways to obtain weapons, items, and abilities earlier than the intended timing. We encourage you to try to discover alternate routes of exploration."
Of course, we'll have to see if that's true, but it's encouraging that they're straight-out promoting the game as having Super-levels of potential openness.
Also, regarding Hollow Knight: yeah, the big 30-hour main quest is great. And if you're up to the DLC challenges, your playtime will go into the 100s. (I'm at about 70 or 80 myself.) But that's a different game. It's sprawling and lengthy. Metroid is all about tight pacing and design. I played Super right after Hollow Knight and was almost shocked by how fast Super moves in comparison. 1 hour in and you've already gotten a whole bunch of upgrades. It's more propulsive. I love both, but they're different takes on the genre.
@Meteoroid Samus Returns and Dread did take elements from Other M. It would be nice if they gave another stab at what they tried in Other M
The issue with the first person perspective in Prime is that it makes vertical movement hard to pull off, but that is important in the side-scrolling Metroids. I think the perspective in Other M makes it much easier to do vertical movement.
@Wesker There is a mod of Other M called Maxximum Edition that looks pretty good, though I haven't tried it. They took out the annoying elements.
@Meteoroid
Mm, not sure it's that's short for me. Keep in mind the in-game timer is totally inaccurate. Without rushing it, it still takes me close to 8 to 10 hours to clear it and I know where most of the major stuff is by now. (I can probably finish it in much less, but I waste time for the vibes and to practice bomb jumping or whatever.) Pretty sure my first playthrough in 2009 was longer because I got majorly stuck a few times.
@Meteoroid
Oh, it's really easy, yeah. I mean you get health drops just for running into things. But it works out because that means you're not totally screwed when you sequence-break and go underpowered into late-game areas. It's mostly an exploration game, so the low enemy difficulty made sense for it. Interested in how Dread combines that with — from the sounds of it — more involved and harsher fighting.
This is one of the few gaming outlets in which I have total faith in their reviews. I can't wait until Friday. I'll be playing Dread all day!
@Krysus and you think the comments section is safer than the actual review, in terms of spoilers? Seriously?
Haven't read the review except for checking the summary, pros, cons and the score. I don't want any spoilers. So amped for tomorrow! It's not just Metroid Dread out, Vanilla Ninja, after a similarly long wait (15 years), will release their fifth album tomorrow too. Something feels so right in the universe right now.
@Beaucine i don't replay games, i have too big a backlog to play 1 game more than 1 time. I was let down big time by Metroid 3ds' 4 hr length, so I'm glad to know this one is short too so i can buy physical version & sell it later. Hollow knight is my favorite Metroidvania, FWIW. I guess is DID out Metroidvania Metroid for ppl like me, where quality + quantity beats quality alone. I don't like every game to be that long, but i love zelda for instance & would hate that they were shorter (& dislike the shorter ones made by 3rd parties). Very disappointing this is only 12 hrs, cuz i guarantee it won't take most Metroid veterans that long to beat it, & many of us don't like to have to replay games to get value from them.
@Crockin most of us thought they were finally catching up w the times. Sadly, it seems not. Used it is.
@Meteoroid exactly this really shows that mercury steam rocks. I will say this, I enjoyed Lords of Shadow tremendously and have always thought they were a good developer. Excited for Dread and this shows they are a developer to watch.

@PALversusNTSC
I played Super for the first time this year and was strongly let down. There was so much hype that I expected too much. It was a floaty, select pressing snoozefest for me. I personally didn't enjoy the lack of narrative or direction like everyone else did
does the image with that blue thing with an eyeball remind us of mother brain this game could show how she was created.
@twztid13
I play videogames for interesting experiences. Replays allow me to dive deeper, grow more acquainted with the mechanics, become a better player, discover aspects of the game I had missed the first time, and so on. Simply blowing through my backlog is meaningless if I've forgotten about the first game (or never truly got to know it) by the time I cleared my tenth. I don't have a responsibility to my backlog. Also, with a game like Super Metroid, where every run can be different, replays are never exactly the same.
From the initial launch of the switch I knew that Nintendo was NOT f'ing around this generation!! I'm beyond hyped for this game and will have it pre loaded tomorrow!
SAMUS HAS RETURNED!!!!!!!
@twztid13 That's fine if you prefer a longer experience, but that doesn't mean everyone does or that every game needs to be so long. Long games aren't like some new development or even the standard, and 10-15 hour games arent ancient relics of the past either. Fwiw the biggest games so far this year are 10-15 hour games.
Meh, only a 10/10?
Not worth $60.
@Neckcrane you shouldn't have to wait that long. do you have venmo or square cash? I'm in the U.S. and would like to help shorten that wait
YUS! getting my copy 8am on Friday at Nintendo NY. Got a reserved Warp Pass place in line.
Metroid: Dread is pre-loaded on my switch, this will be my first Metroid experience ever! great review as always
Wel it's not like this site gives official Nintendo games less than 9 ever anyway, I'll look for less paid to review types.
In typical fashion, some folks try to argue the high score of a Nintendo game before playing it. Maybe just maybe Nintendo games are actually seen as quality experiences to a good majority of people?
Anyway, good review and its great to see this game get high praise from critics. Can't wait till Friday.
@UglyCasanova They've given lower than 9 to multiple official Nintendo games although as a whole they tend to give more positive reviews than negative ones. Nintendo games tend to land in the 7-10 range here (especially for the big releases like Dread)
@Rin-go I've watched the videos. I can tell you if the graphics are amazing, good or bad. I don't have to be an expert. In fact, I didn't say that. You are the one who said that to justify your fallacy and the flaws in your argument (as an expert).
But relax kid, 8/10, 9/10 is still a good game. Enjoy. The game doesn't have to be perfect.
@Crockin The thing I think they guy was saying is when someone shows a blind passion for the game, they can't see the reality, everything is perfect... so... "the gameplay is nice, so it's a 10/10 doesn't matter the graphics". The fun factor is 10, not everything else. Then we hear It's a 12 hour campaign, but it's a 10/10 because it's the perfect time for a campaign (???). I remember only one person saying a good argument: "Eurogamer said this is one of the best looking games on Switch". That would be fine. We can't compare that with Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima (which are not last gen games anymore). But I'm still sure I would have more fun with Metroid Dread than Death Stranding (no joke, DS was boring).
There are other things that could be added on this kind of thread...you know, people complaining about Oled switch, expecting 4k, better hardware, better video card... WHY? Nothing else matters than gameplay, right?
I like how people are bringing up the Other M review despite the fact that review was over 10 years ago with an almost entirely different staff. And the comment section was filled with positivity from the users.
What in EMMI’s name is happening in the comments?!
Their marketing failed me. I didn’t want this game. Then out the blue I realised I hadn’t bought Skyward Sword HD yet. So as usual when there’s 2 big games I want I bought one of those Nintendo Online voucher things. The £85 voucher that nets you two Switch games. I used mine for Zelda and Metroid on a whim.
I’m glad Metroid is well rated. I’ll be sinking my great unblemished yet have had no dental work done teeth into them.
*side note. Yes my teeth are perfect. Born with no Wisdom teeth, no need for fillings despite my age, just perfect gnashers. I have no clue why other people don’t look after their teeth correctly: all I do is brush them once at night before bed.
But yeah Metroid. I cannot wait to play this on my oled switch. I’ll even use my AirPods Max, you know the ones, Apples highest end headphones with genuinely the best sound quality in the world. I doubt it supports Dolby ATMOS but it would be nice if it did.
I don’t understand why people don’t always go for the best things in life. I write this on my golden iPhone 13 Pro Max. Last phone was the 12. Yet some mentalists opt for Samsung or Android phones. Terrible quality phone. You have ONE LIFE then you’re gone forever. Don’t waste it. Play the best games, own the best phones (outright. No loans or debt or monthly fees yuck), get a sexy partner, be a sexy partner, use the best only. Imagine being on your death bed surrounded by ***** quality things: ***** phone, ***** computer, ***** partner, ***** kids.
@Mynameishello dang, I like the way you think!
@Henmii
Thank you for mentioning it, i really tried to like the Metroid 2 Remake, but i hate the Counter System, as it just overused.
The Trailers showed that this Game will be really similiar, so nothing for me.
Wow thats a long time seeing 10/10 for any game.
And i like it that the bosses ar really challening. Love it to trow my controller at the TV and yell "shooottt dammit"hate you samus!!!!" 😂😂😂😂😂
Turns of the switch and cries in a corner.
Lol just kidding 😂
@jancotianno
And? You're just repeating yourself.
You can look at videos to see if a game looks appealing to you. Judging whether a review is biased or not, they all are by the way, or debating the score with a person who actually played all through it is unnecessary and just plain arrogant.
You really just seem to want to hear yourself talk. Or read yourself write in this case.
@nessisonett
That's interesting. I should check that review out.
It actually makes me curious if people over the years just took on other people's or at least the most common opinion as their own. Like perhaps people were iffy on some things, but enjoyed it overall, then all those "Samus weak" takes happened and people made it out to be a bigger deal than it was? On a side note, experiencing PTSD and overcoming it would mean strength not weakness. The amount of people who make it seem that you have to essentially be a stone to be considered strong is bizarre.
I checked it out a little and it really felt like a relic of times passed. lol Even the user score is a 7 on there.
Woah 10? I was expecting a 9 and no lower, but a 10? That's good news and thankfully not a simple filler until Prime 4. Lot of serious Nintendo "love" appears to have gone into this. Reads great!
I always have major touble with SOME Metroid bosses so it's "as you were" for me with regard to Metroid games, lol. Not a negative point.
I don't get it. A review is an opinion. Everyone is commenting their own opinion. Some are stating that they are entitled to their opinion but in the same comment criticising the reviewers opinion.
@Duncanballs
Right? lol
I also like "Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but here's why yours is wrong". Though that might not happen as much in the comments.
I just noticed that I basically repeated your point. Oops. haha
AMAZON will bring my copy today !!! yeah !!! this is a lucky week... yesterday I had the OLED and today METROID😁😁😁
Does it retain the mortal sin from the 3DS remake of 2 where you can only move using the analog stick and not the D-pad?
Merry Christmas everyone!
Sorry, but the stealth and horror aspects aren't for me. It's like they took the things I don't like about "Metroid Fusion" and made them much worse.
12 hours is perfect !!!
I'm in my late 30s and I don't have a lot of time on my hands. So a short and intense experience is perfect for me.
To everyone complaining about it : stop pretending you don't have a huge backlog waiting for you.
@Duncanballs If reviews are just "opinions" then they have no business being paid to be given and no business being separated from those of user reviews
Professional critical reviews are meant to be just that, critical reviews.
People don't seem to understand that professional reviews are meant to be an in depth critical analysis of a piece of content. They are suppose to break them down and evaluate them on every level to understand the intent and how well it achieves that intent.
This whole "reviews are just opinions" business is exactly why modern gaming review systems are a joke.
Hoped to see Fusion included as an unlockable bonus. But that will appear on the expansion-expansion super premium star tier of the online service.
@Richnj
No, they're not? And that's also not exclusives to games, because I doubt most music or movie reviews are that in depth.
@Richnj
They are just opinions though
This seems to have got a very good reception, better than I expected. Never been a huge 2D Metroid fan but graphically this looks great, really good design and style to it. I also like the idea of Samus being pursued and separately, a 2D game being a blockbuster. Will give it a go.
The gameplay looks solid but the artistic part of Metroid Dread... I wasn't and I'm still not sure that this game is at the level of Super Metroid and the Metroid Prime Trilogy. That is an important part of Metroid for me. It's what made me enjoy Super Metroid and the Metroid Prime Trilogy, that and the sound. The gameplay has always been serviceable and the level design balanced unlike overcomplicated indie games that follow the Metroidvania formula. I will play Metroid Dread someday but not anytime soon.
@Duncanballs @Rin-go @nessisonett
There seems to be come confusion over what reviewers are and can be. It tied in with the obsession over scores. They’re just an opinion. They might be made from a relatively informed viewpoint and some aspects of the game can be objectively quantified but ultimately whether someone likes it is an opinion.
The only downside: some bosses are quite difficult.
Tomorrow can’t come quick enough!
@Rin-go And? "you are repeating"... "you the expert", "seems arrogant". Dude, enjoy the game. Get over it. Stop this hate, bring arguments saying why the graphics are so incredible. I just hope that Nintendo realizes they will have to improve this in the future because they are not one, but two generations behind now.
@electrolite77 There is, people worry so much about it. I just hope people don't go hating on Famitsu... Metroid Dread: 9/8/9/8 = 34
@electrolite77 @Rin-go Then lump them in with user reviews.
The literal definition of a reviewer is someone who writes a critical appraisal of a piece of content.
@Richnj
Your overthinking the categorisations. How much weight you give to a particular opinion is up to you. Professional reviews may have more time to analyse the game and experience when it comes to writing. Then there’s YouTube reviews, how do you categorise them?
How much weight you give to an individual review is up to you. It would be comforting to think there was an objective, definitive measure of these things. But just like with every other form of art/entertainment there isn’t.
Ultimately it’s someone’s opinion.
@jancotianno
You can't be that lacking in self-awareness.
I don't have to justify why the reviewer likes the graphics to you. Ocarina of Time is one of the best reviewed games despite the low frame-rate. Also art style is more important than visual fidelity.
It's rich that you're so concerned about Famitsu getting hate for their review, when that's all you've been doing since NL posted theirs.
@Richnj
These are reviews by connoisseurs. Critical reviews, like from people who studied game design, are a separate thing.
These professional reviews have an edge on user reviews in the sense that you know they at least played a decent amount and have more to say than "Nintendo sucks. #FreeMelee -10/10".
@mmakara81
Oh my, thanks very much for the offer. I honestly can not accept it though. I am in the UK anyways. You take care my friend ✌️
@Rin-go I think you should look at yourself before saying that to anyone else.
And regarding famitsu, I think you didn't get the sarcasm.
@Rin-go "These are reviews by connoisseurs. Critical reviews, like from people who studied game design, are a separate thing."
If you really think like that, you wouldn't write half of your comments here. Btw, nice touch summoning Ocarina of Time.
@Richnj I have to say you are proving the route cause of the issues on this thread in my opinion. I have given an opinion that you don't agree with. You are constantly challenging other opinions when they do not align with yours. My opinion whether critical, paid, professional, reviewer or user they are opinions as we are all individuals. My version of how I see the colour blue will be different to yours. No manner of training will change that.
You have your opinion and I have no objection to that.
Sadly, my special edition has not shipped yet from the Ninty UK store, so it looks like I wont be trying it this weekend. Something to look forward to next week though! Interested to see how the diffculty compares to Castlevania entries and titles like Blasphemous.
@jancotianno
The "It was just a joke" excuse?
Also sarcasm doesn't translate through text, so people use things like /s to indicate it. You should probably give that a try.
I don't know what that second comment is supposed to mean, but I guess you're just trying to get an argument in. Nice try, but needs more effort. Also the graphics aren't up-to-date. 4/10
@Rin-go Ok kid, it was not a joke because you said so. Use fallacies, lie about what the other person said. Be happy.
@Duncanballs "I have to say you are proving the route cause of the issues on this thread in my opinion. I have given an opinion that you don't agree with. You are constantly challenging other opinions when they do not align with yours"
I have just joined this thread, at over 300 comments and made two comments, talking to two people (3 and 3 if we include this one). I hardly see how I am the root cause of anything that was going on here. Or how I am "constantly" challenging anyone.
"My version of how I see the colour blue will be different to yours. No manner of training will change that."
That's fair, but if you were to give a critical appraisal of a picture. You wouldn't say "that blue is blue" you'd talk about how the blue was applied to the picture, why the artist used blue, what they intended you to feel and think when you saw it, and how well they did that. That is something that more training could help you understand and use in your critical review.
I just got the special edition a day early from GameStop. Just arrived!! The special edition box is MASSIVE
@Richnj apologies I have probably lost the plot on who said what in this thread.
I need this game in my mouth right now.
@jancotianno
I'm not. I'm paraphrasing, using the typical way people act online.
I guess getting a taste of your own medicine doesn't taste that good, right?
@Rin-go This is the last time I'll explain to you: Famitsu is a very famous magazine. Their reviews are spread worldwide. We don't have to be afraid for them. That's the sarcasm you didn't understand, or admit you didn't understand.
You've said a lot of phrases regarding the person, not the comment as an argument.
Fallacy: "Also the graphics aren't up-to-date. 4/10". You are lying to prove your point. No one said that. That's far from paraphrasing as you've said. The points are clear here. Again, be happy.
@Duncanballs absolutely no problem at all. Completely understandable.
Other M was my favourite game on Wii.
Metroid: is 'great, why because it's great. Oh ok thanks.
Another review without completing the games. Please play the game in its entirety before giving it a grade.
Is it better than super metroid?
trying to figure out what "OTT body horror" is supposed to mean
But is this game better than ori and hollow knight?
@Beaucine i play games very slowly, so i always remember my playthrough & the reason I'm not about to plqy through games again when i have tons of games i am still dying to play that i haven't played. Adult ls.w a full time job that's not in the gaming industry would have to dedicate every waking minute to gaming to play through just my favorite games more than 1 time. I barely have any free time & i only olay through games 1 time. To each his own, but many of us will just buy physical version used in this case. No point in being stuck with a shorter game, that most already feel is overpriced. That would be different for longer games, but it is what it is. Hope it works out for Nintendo to appease a specific crowd at the expense of others. Final fantasy did it & screwed it's turn based fans & it worked out well for them, so i cam understand why these companies are doing it. If KOTOR remake doesn't have turn based battles, i think I'll stick to solely independent studios' games (or certainly won't buy any games from these big companies, that's for sure).
@nightwishpower seems it's, about the same length. https://howlongtobeat.com/ had it at 7 hrs while super Metroid was close to 7.5 hrs,,so shorter if anything, it seems.
@luckiernut depends on preference ofc, but i say a huge no based on all the reviews. For those who judge them evenly, & no bias for the series. Seeing as that's almost impossible, u have to find reviews & gamers who have similar tastes & judge that way.
https://howlongtobeat.com/
For those concerned about length like many of us, samus returns, a super short 3ds game comes in about 11 hrs while Metroid dread is averaging 7 hours per playthrough. This can change ofc, but at best it may be similar in length, no one in their right mind will claim this game is longer.
Metroid Dread is nothing more than a slighty umproved Samus Returns!
@GamingDude800 If that's your comparison, then I'd consider it a downgrade, since "Samus Returns" lets you just fight the Metroids once you encounter them instead of using stupid stealth sections of needing to avoid unbeatable enemies until you reach the point that you can finally kill them.
Still, "Samus Returns" is an excellent game, so comparing "Dread" to it is ultimately a high compliment.
@Meteoroid Oh nice! I'm glad they honoured the price!
I was very tempted to pick up another copy, but I'll be patient ^_^
I got my copy of Metroid Dread at retail for 35 pounds.
Sounds like more of what I hated in Samus returns. Not sold at all, and will not be buying this at still price.
I'll give it some time for the reviews to settle down, and will monitor. In the meantime, if I run out of games ... Will play Super Metroid again.
@Cathousemaster I'm curious. What problems from "Samus Returns" does it bring back that aren't in "Super Metroid"? As far as I can tell, "Samus Returns" is pretty similar to "Super" save for the structure of a bunch of smaller boss fights (while "Dread" also has more traditional boss fights), adding diagonal aiming and the parry ability (both of which were nice additions to the gameplay), and then adding the Aeion abilities (which you don't have to use if you really don't want to do so).
As for me, it's the things I don't like that they brought back from "Metroid Fusion" (and made even worse) that turn me off from this game.
I've been playing for an hour and am absolutely blown away by how good this game is. I'm traditionally only a Metroid Prime fan, having not really loved the 2D stuff but this game is changing my mind VERY quickly.
@ultraviper over the top body horror, like big open wound belly buttons and slimy disgusting stuff.
After having played it now...no, i don't think i can bring myself to agree.
After just an hour, i was genuinely contemplating to just quit it.
It controls like a hokey puck on a soaped ice field and i just can't deal with it...
It sucks out any and all enjoyment from it for me.
I'm about an hour in and sure it's great (played all the OG Metroid games growing up) but leaves a sour taste in my mouth knowing how much I Syed for a 10-12 hour game.
super metroid >>>>>>>> am2r ~=~ zero mission >>>> nes metroid >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> dread
yes, i find playing nes metroid more replayable than dead [no a typo].
i could add the other games in the series to my rank-meter but im not a metroid prime advocate ...
BOTW has zero replay value and is an empty barren world. that game was overrated too.
stuff sucks so bad these days anything that doesnt just suck hard and just plain sucks or is mediocre gets a "10"
all the new hardware and resolution and "better" controllers has resulted in video games getting worse and worse and worse every generation.
@nightwishpower
"is it better than super Metroid"
not by a long shot.
@mickrussom who hurt you?
@jancotianno
I was reviewing your comment while making fun of your constant "BuT gRaPhIx BaD".
The explanation for your sarcasm doesn't even make sense.
@clianvXAi
I know that was an old comment, but missing the point of the comment you replied to so much is kind of hilarious. Or you're just a troll, who has to get some supposed gotchas in.
@pgerhard
Tell me you didn't read the review without telling me you didn't read the review.
The review downright talks about the last boss section.
I don't know what the problem with some of you is. Are you only here to "expose" NL or what?
I don't understand why people get so fired up over someone else's opinion or they have to shove their own opinion's down everyone's throats until they change the world's mind. Like the game, hate the game, it's an opinion. There are of course objective factors in every game that are obvious, but how someone perceives those objective views is up to them. I'm not super fond of running away from the EMMIs, but it doesn't mean it's a bad idea.
It seems people wanted Super Metroid 2. They aren't going to get it. Nintendo won't make another sequel unless it's somehow evolved in a way.
@mickrussom You sound like a boomer who doesn't want change. No one's stopping you from playing older games, but this is a completely incorrect view of the current gaming scene. There are a ton of amazing games that are out right now, but every time a game gets a 10 people lose their collective minds because it's not a ten to them. If this game got an 8 or a 7 no one would care. You can still play retro games just fine and enjoy that era, but time moves on and games evolve and they're better than they ever have been.
@thegametb It's not a gaming PC. What were you expecting? There will be no day one patch to address anything. The game looks great for the Switch. This is also nearly 7-year-old hardware. It's essentially an Nvidia Shield K1 tablet.
@BulbasaurusRex I can't answer your question / post properly, not without going through Samus returns again.
My vague memories of that was a complete focus away from environment level design, with most of the focus on combat. It lacked all the brilliance of Super Metroid, where power ups could be used in creative ways to traverse the world.
I'll comment again after I have played dread, but that's going to be a while.
I think I'm just too old school these days - if I don't get lost endlessly and die continuously, I'm not happy
I am 2 hours in and I am shocked how many cutscenes the game has. They are useless and they interrupt the gameplay flow.
@Bigdawg92 paid**
This game is so incredible its hard to put into words. It's everything I hoped it would be as I've been waiting for this most of my adult life.
It's so good I have to constantly suspend the game and just soak in everything I've experienced thus far. It's to be SAVORED. Games like this don't come around often. Once or twice a decade, if you're lucky.
The mechanics are so smooth and fluid even just running around, jumping, sliding and shooting is fun. Even just standing there doing nothing is entertaining.
Muah muah muah muah muah! 💋 Chef's kiss!
Now 128 polled on howlongtobeat.com & it's main story still sits at 7.5 hrs to beat & the main+extra gets shorter & shorter.
@JaxonH great to hear. Are you playing in handheld or on a tv screen? I want to play in handheld, but i don't use headphones there & worried i may lose something playing that way.
@ivory_soul someone's age doesn't determine whether they like change. That sounds like something a ______ would say. That's you doing exactly what you accuse them of, a specific mindset due to age. The US has employment laws against ageism because it was so harmful & rampant. People are individuals, so unless they tell you they are speaking on behalf of a group, you shouldn't assume it. I despised the gaming generations i had to live through & couldn't wait until games caught up with what i envisioned them to look like back then. I am definitely biased against 8 & 16 bit games especially & am "old".
@mickrussom i play games through 1 time (& usually 100% the ones i love). I want a great 1st playthru. Many like me don't care about replay value. We want PLAY value.
I have spent over 350 hrs in BotW & still haven't done everything it has to offer, it is leagues better than any other game in my favorite gaming franchise, IMHO. To eavh his own, ofc, just offering another perspective. Gaming companies are trying to cater to people like u & people like me. It's not easy.
@twztid13
OLED TV with Sennheiser Ambeo Dolby Atmos Soundbar, which is more than capable of the 5.1 surround in Dread. And ya, it's quite the experience. Top notch video and audio really add to the experience.
I would be playing on the OLED Switch in handheld mode, but ya know, FedEx decided to change the arrival date at 7pm the day of, to Thursday of next week. And my other one hasn't even started preparing shipment yet. Go figure. Without the OLED I really don't wanna play handheld. I do have some good headphones though. Sennheiser 800S and Hifiman Arya for when the OLED does arrive.
It looks good on the TV though. It really does. You can notice some slight imperfections here and there being a Switch game, but they're so minor they really don't detract from the experience at all.
The game does have great audio though, and even headphones with incredible soundstage still won't provide more than 2 channels. Whereas if you have surround sound set up on your TV for Switch, you get the full 5.1
I would like to know if there are optional bosses or abilities in the game which are not required to beat/gain in order to beat the game
@BlackenedHalo 100%ed the game on normal. Nothing optional outside of the typical Missile, Bomb, and Health Upgrades.
@Seacliff oh that is a pity ... I can imagine brutal hard optional bosses giving you optional abilities that you can use to gain certain optional reward which cannot be taken without the optional abilities ...that is why I do not understand why this game got a 10/10 when it does not add anything new to the genre/series.
@twztid13 Mmmm....no. I am not exactly what I said I the other person was acting like. Having a flat statement of "all games today are terrible" is incredibly narrow-minded and is indicative of what someone older would say because they don't like change. And what does ageism laws in employment have to do with my statement? I also sound "he sounds like a boomer" not "You're a boomer" I was implying that statement sounds like how it sounds. I wasn't calling anyone any names.
I couldn’t get into Samus Returns at all after multiple attempts, so my expectations were... tempered. I just finished my first run (13 hours), and I am simply blown away.
Gameplay, pacing, story (!), tone, atmosphere... everything was just nailed. MercurySteam over promised and over delivered. I’ve always been lukewarm on the studio — but Metroid Dread is a masterclass of game design and they have honed their craft to a diamond sharp degree.
They way MercurySteam expands and contracts the box of freedom around the player is a remarkable achievement in the genre. I can’t think of a game save maybe Hollow Knight that does it better.
I’m an unapologetic fan of Other M — but Sakimoto and MercurySteam deftly did a great job of doing “reverse fan service”, establishing Samus as closer to the consensus fan “head canon”. She is absolutely fantastic. She has one line of dialogue, and it is in Chozo. Brilliant. Without spoiling anything there are moments that feel like that “Doom 2016” tone-setting intro that, even as fan of Other M I really, really appreciated.
Top 3 Metroid of all time, no doubt.
Top 5 Metroidvania game... deserves to be in the conversation with Super Metroid, Symphony, Hollow Knight, and anyone’s favorite.
Will it surpass Super Metroid? Time will tell. Right now, in the afterglow of it, and a few hours knocking around in Super Metroid again, I think it will for me personally. I can not wait to go back to ZDR in Hard Mode, and chip away at 100% items on my clear file.
Nintendo... fund this studio!!!!
2021 GOTY.
If Metroid Prime 4 comes even close to this great, Metroid is the franchise of the generation. I wouldn’t be surprised if they canned Prime 4 after seeing Dread — the bar for the series is officially raised. This game is a dream come true, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it to all Metroid fans as soon as they can get their hands on it.
@BlackenedHalo Not everything has to be revolutionary (though I think Dread is very innovative for the series). It will be argued by many for years to come as one of the greatest games in the series, and in the genre.
The story / cutscenes are front-loaded. I was worried too, but it smooth sailing after the intro:)
@Cathousemaster I did not like Samus Returns at all and loved Dread. After a few hours you’ll totally forget about these games were made by the same team.
@luckiernut Personal taste, but it definitely deserves to be in the conversation. Hollow Knight is my all-time favorite in the genre, and I’m going to have to replay both before I make up my mind which is better. Hollow Knight has more content and a higher skill ceiling and payoff for it, but Dread is a more layered experience, better pacing .. I think pacing in Metroidvanias can be described as “box of freedom”. the developer expands and contracts around the player and Dread has the edge IMO. Dread has a broader palette of tone than Hollow Knight, or really any game in the genre.
At the end of the day, it’s not a grudge match, and what makes one better of the other are interesting differences and choices by the developers. If you’re a fan of the genre I think it’s an absolute must-play if/when you can afford it.
@Richnj Completely agree. Reviews are not opinion pieces. If they want to write “just their opinion...” put it in the comment section with the rest of our unpaid amateur takes.
@Spiders
Of course they are.
@BlackenedHalo
That's not really what Metroid is about though? How would you even signal those optional bosses? Where would you put them, so someone doing a normal run won't come across them?
@Rin-go huh? Did you mean to @ me?
Just beat it (94%) and although it's a fabulous experience, find it awfully disrespectful to give the same score as BOTW. Great game but not even close. Felt ripped off for the price I paid
This I hands down one of the best switch titles I’ve played this year. I’m a good 5 hours into it and unable to put it down.
I got this a week ago as a preorder, I finished it an hour ago. This is tough, but most boss patterns can be learned and perfected. The hidden items were not so hard to find with the map, at least for the most part, some of them were tricky to spot, the sensor aeon ability does not show unexplored rooms as hidden blocks. I managed to get all items on my own, without any external help, except 2 missile+, one with the speed booster and slopes and one with the speed booster and bouncing on the wall and sliding. For those I had to check youtube to get a clue how to do them, because these tricks never ever mentioned or needed to use in the game anywhere else. Besides these I think it a very great game, my ingame time was 15 hours with many many many Game Over screens . I cannot imagine what could be the Hard mode, this was already harder than most Metroid games I played (or at least official Metroid games, Super Metroid Redesign is also hard as hell).
I got Metroid for my NES when I was 7 years old.. it was scary… exciting.. and brutally hard. I gave up!
I absolutely loved Super Metroid and have played from start to finish many times over the years.
This is amazing!
It’s brutally hard in places and I’ve resorted to guides a few times.. that said once you know the patterns a second play through will be a cake walk.
It never feels unfair tho I must have died 50 times on Kraid before I got the parry mastered.
I enjoy the game in order or exploration, EMMI encounters and bosses - this is good because that’s also the ratio of time spent on each one.
I usually hate stealth (the guards in Ocarina of Time were enough LOL) BUT actually it’s really exciting and supremely satisfying when you finish them!
Perhaps too hard in places for newcomers - maybe an easy mode or hints after so many deaths would help?
Will Prime 4 be a disappointment after this?
@Ryu_Niiyama so I know this about the amiibo….
Samus (Metroid Dread)
– Receive an extra energy tank to increase your health by 100
– Tap again to replenish some health once per day
E.M.M.I (Metroid Dread)
– Receive a Missile Plus tank, increasing missile capacity by 10
– Tap again to replenish some missiles once per day
Samus Aran (Metroid series), Samus (Super Smash Bros. series), Zero Suit Samus (Super Smash Bros. series)
– Tap to replenish some health once per day
Metroid (Metroid series), Ridley (Super Smash Bros. series), Dark Samus (Super Smash Bros. series)
– Tap to replenish some missiles once per day
But what I do not know is how many you can use in a day? In BotW you can use as many amiibo a day as you want (but can only use each once a day) to stock up. Can I use each Metroid once to stock up when I get low?
I once used to shift from game to game never completing one or another- then the pandemic happened and I’m on my 18th finished game of the year. That honor belongs to this beauty, Metroid Dread. Never having completed a Metroid game other than Super via Wii VC, I made it my mission to see Semus through. The developers created an environment that captured one’s attention and the puzzles were just enough to make one keep on trying. The quality of life improvement of checkpoints truly helps this adventures fail & try again formula - without making one back track at all. After 100% it, Dread is my game of the year. Please give this game a shot if you haven’t already. I was so eager for more lore I went back and beat the OG NES Metroid in a couple nights!
@StarPoint maybe clairvoyant ???
After getting my copy for Christmas (and losing it only to find that it was in a basket for 3 MONTHS), I am absolutely pumped to play this game.
I bought this a couple of weeks ago with my Switch. I have a feeling we are playing a different game. Put about an hour into it. Hated it. The difficulty level was so frustrating that it ruined any enjoyment. Tomorrow it will be getting traded in for some credit.
Well I'm kind of late to the Metroid party, but I just finished it today and man, what a ride it was.
It was challenging enough but never impossible.
Those EMMI sections were amazing, even though a priori I thought those parts I would like less than the others. The music, the feeling, the sounds the EMMI made were so perfect and climatic, I was so nervous playing it but at the same time willing to kill them and it was SO rewarding getting to do that.
I love the Chozo fights too. Playing Samus was so great, her speed and overall control felt amazing. I did get frustrated a couple of times mixing ZR and L, and R with L, but after a few tries you kind of get used to it.
I finished it 100% in almost 13 hours (I did use some youtube research because some ammo was impossible to get (specially those were Samus must get speed than keep on getting it and not lose it to break some walls, those parts were a bigger challenge that most of the bosses).
Basically a perfect game and the perfect Metroid experience. I hope we get another 2D Metroid game sooner than later.
This game is just awesome. As very much a casual gamer dipping my toe back in after years away, it's still a bit of a challenge on the easiest mode.
Still, I'm halfway through and already looking forward to playing through again on the harder modes. I love the level design, and the fact that the answer to any issue is there for you to find, not pointed out for you, but not ridiculously taxing.
The EMMI sections are awesome, I love the way they increase the intensity of the game.
First Metroid I think I'll complete since Super Metroid back when I was a kid.
only got it this week! It is certainly a 10/10 so far! absolutely loving it in all its beauty and difficulty!
Metroid Dread sucks 👎 The graphics are horribly bland and have nasty-looking prerendered CGI, and the constant running away from robots ruins the exploration theme that has always been part of Metroid games. This doesn't feel like Metroid, it feels like a half-baked, bargain bin eShop game.
I just got this and I'm having an absolute blast!! This game is simply spoiling me rotten!! Everything about the game is just good. Samus's standing poses, movement, parry, combat, and pace of upgrades are all a dream. The sense that you're constantly getting stronger is so amazing and a huge part of what I game for!!
There are some issues I have with the game, chiefly the original soundtrack being rather forgettable and not up to Metroid standards of excellence. But what absolutely trumps everything here, is how f*cking perfect the game feel is. It's just leagues above any other metroid game in the gameplay department. Samus allows you to feel like such a badass once you master the moveset. It's the one Metroid game I'm constantly compelled to replay every few months just for how good it feels to play. Definitely a masterpiece in its genre.
So, after a few years of Dread my initial opinion stills stands. Its a truly fantastic action platformer but as a Metroid game I'm disappointed. The muted colour pallet making the areas blend together despite their differences and lacklustre music makes exploration feel, well as muted as the colours. Mercury Steams previous effort, whilst a lesser game, captured the 'life' of a Metroid game more. Which makes Dreads position awkward for me to place in my list of Metroid games, as a game its superior to most but as a Metroid game a far prefer most others.
Also, wouldnt it have been awesome if once you defeat an EMMI a shutter in the background that was there to not let EMMI get distracted from task lifted to reveal the most beautiful backgrounds in that area. A good reward for defeating them and bringing life to a sterile environment (I get why when EMMI is there, tension and all) and making it a joy to traverse and explore after.
I'm 3 yrs late to this. It's been on the shelf and I'm working through my backlog. I've never played a Metroid game before and this has been quite the learning experience. There is no handholding with this game whatsoever. I've restarted it twice. Once 5 hrs in, because I totally forgot what I was doing after a week away and once when I mistakenly started exploring for items, and again, totally forgot what I was supposed to be doing and where I was supposed to be doing it. A couple of times I was begging for a system like Dead Space's, where you'd click the right stick and it would remind you where you're supposed to be going. Anyway, I think I'm on the right track now. It's a great game, maybe not for someone new to the franchise and its somewhat unforgiving nature, but still worthy of the high review scores.
