Play as Sonic or Tails
For those gamers in 1993 who were still unfortunate enough to not have not upgraded to the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis this third 8-bit Sonic adventure might hold some memories. It is unlikely that many will remember this Master System swansong however. That nasty piece of work, Dr. Robotnik is up to no good again and has...

Drop dashing into Origins
With the release of Sonic Origins Plus on the Switch, Sonic fans can now not only play as the severely underutilised Amy in all four mainline titles, but there are now 12 Game Gear Sonic games to peruse and play at your leisure from the compilation's 'Missions' menu. Now, we're probably never going to recommend playing the...

News EU VC Update: ClayFighter and Sonic Chaos
Hanabi Festival enthusiasts have to wait a bit longer, it seems - Due to recent OFLC ratings, many thought one would be right around the corner, but Nintendo seems to have given this VC week to Sega instead.
The first new game this week is ClayFighter for the Mega Drive. Attempting to cash in on other popular games at the time, such as Street...
News USA VC Update: Sonic Chaos
The streak of high-profile releases for the US continues - As Sonic 3 wasn't remade for the Master System, Sega has decided it's time to release the other Sonic games for the system.
Sonic Chaos is the third Master System Sonic game. The Chaos Emeralds have been stolen yet again, so Sonic and Tails will have to travel through six zones to get them...
About The Game
Play as Sonic or Tails in Sonic Chaos, which was originally made for the Sega Master System. Dr. Eggman (a.k.a. Dr. Robotnik) has stolen the Red Chaos Emerald to create nuclear weapons. This has thrown the remaining Chaos Emeralds off balance, causing them to transport to a parallel universe.
As a result, Sonic's home, South Island, is sinking into the ocean. Speed through various levels in your crusade for the six Chaos Emeralds. Perform Strike Dashes and Super-Peel Outs as Sonic, or Spin Dash and Fly as Tails, and restore order in Sonic Chaos.

I never played this game, and to be honest I'm pretty impressive with the graphics for a Master System game. I will get it, for sure.
This game looks so lame. I like Sonic games, but this just sucks as far as fun factor goes.
"One of the more lesser known Sonic platformers."
And for good reason.
I played the Game Gear version and thought it was pretty fun, maybe I'll actually get this one.
I think this was my first ever game that I completed. I must have been 5, or maybe 6 years old.
Wow, I've never even heard of this one. Sonic, you still manage to surprise me...even in a good way, this time.
This is a pretty cool game actually. I played the GG version of it years ago and enjoyed it.
Hmm...
This looks better than the other SMS/GG Sonic games, but I don't know if it's worth the 500 points.
Oh My God not another Game Gear game that i still have.It was not the best Sonic Game Gear Game but it was not the worst either that'd have to belong to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Game Gear. So if i had to pick a game for anyone i'd go with this one.
Folks, this ll be the SMS version for sure, not the GG version.
Anyhoo, unless we see the GG only titles or spin offs like Mean Bean and Spinball, this could be the last SMS Sonic...
I'm stayin' away from this. I heard this game was terrible.
@Mr. Cheez
Actually, this one was pretty good. It's not as good as Triple Trouble, but still it's a good play, and a lot of fun. I played the Game Gear version and like it a lot, the only problem I had was with the small screen, which this version won't have.
This looks at least decent, guys. Stop saying all these bad things about, cause it may turn out good.
It's worth the 500 points but not getting it since it's on mega collection plus
Worth the 500 points.
Played this one in the old days.
Good MS/GG Sonic game.
Heh, heh heh, gigalopolis, pfffft HA HA HA HAAA!
the game gear version was fun back in the day..I don't know how the Master System version fairs though ..this was my favorite of the Game Gear sonics I must say..sooo..shrugs XD
500 Points for a half hour game (Sonic Chaos) > 500 Points for a 5 minute game (Donkey Kong 3)
Games aren't about length though I admit, but I still rather play Sonic Chaos
Wow is this game so bad?
@MrLopez:
Yes, it is pretty terrible.
Ya, never mid, I'm not going near this.
What I like about this game and Sonic Triple Trouble is that unlike the first two SMS Sonics, it's more like the Genesis games.
I've seen fan games of Sonic that look better (or funner) then this
2 out of 5 stars? I didn't think it was that bad,
I played this on Sonic Adventure DX, it was fun, so that'd make it my 3rd fave 2D Sonic, after Sonic 2 (Gen), and Sonic 1 (SMS)
so I read your review thoroughly, and the only reason you give this a 2/5 is a lack of challenge? I guess you'd be extremely harsh to any game with a save feature then? You didn't even mention the music. I'm definitely no hardcore fan of sonic, but I do realize this is a better game than its awful prequel. This is worth playing Especially for newer gamers who can't get into older games because of their difficulty.
This is one of the Sonic MS/GG games that I enjoyed. Here's hoping we'll see more.
Another Sonic game...yay.
@ Terranigma :
Sega tried walking down the "remake" route. Does anyone remember Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis for the GBA? Blech. Why would you want/need to remake a platformer anyway? Update it with a twist (New Super Mario Brothers being a good example), but don't just rehash it.
"Remakes" of platformers are beyond pointless, whereas RPG always have room for improvement, and remakes can sometimes be deemed as necessary (bad translations, crappy graphics, et cetera).
Anyway, I have this for the GG... pretty mediocre, but worth a look for hardcore Sonic fans.. on Sonic Mega Collection Plus, that is.
Ouch, harsh score(review was fine)! I'm still getting it, though.
I think it's unfair that this game gets a much worse review & score then Sonic 2 8-bit Sega Master System version... (Wich is a much worse game, in my opinion, and isn't anywhere neer as good as 16-bit Sonic 2 for Genesis/Megadrive.)
While I admit the game is a li'l on the easy side (perhaps to easy for some people) compared to most Sonic titles, it isn't a bad game, and it's far from being the worst 2D Sonic game. I found it enjoyable personally, and the graphics & sounds are pretty good for an 8-bit Sonic game. It has unique zones that arn't the cliche "fire & ice worlds" you find it most games out there, including a completelly mechanized version of the classic Greenhill Zone. (My favorite level in the game.) It also has unique items like the spring shoes to bounce to higher places, wich help it stand out a li'l bit. Boss battles are alot less frustrating then previous 8-bit Sonic titles now that you can finally obtain rings in the boss stages. That alone is an improvement.
I don't think it's true that this game has no challenge whatsoever. I've died a few times in later levels. Not to mention, beating the bonus stages and getting the chaos emeralds as Sonic can be a challenge in it's own right. (You might hafta play through the game a few times to get them all.) Being an old Sonic game though, don't expect to get an epic ending for getting them all though.
Tails' flying ability being introduced in this game, offered some better exploration to, and helped make playing as Tails a li'l more different then Sonic.
It's not the most impressive Sonic game, but I say this game isn't bad. Those frustrated with Sonic 2 SMS's rediculouslly higher difficulty might prefer this game. Old-school Sonic fans might also appreciate the old-school quality of the game.
Beau Skunk for Critic!
Yeah the review does seem kinda harsh, given the score of Sonic 2 SMS in comparison. It's certainly not the best Sonic game but it's very fun and admirable in its own way. Each to their own I guess
Sonic's Best Games came on the Sega Genesis plain and simple. But if you like Sonic enough on the SMS Sonic Chaos is the better choice of the 3 Sonic SMS games on the VC right now.
I got it on the SMS, so I won't be getting it here, but even back then when I was younger and a complete Sonic nut (still am a bitthese days), I found it too easy.
It's much better than the first two SMS games, and it seems more like the Genesis games.
Also, you can't just give something a 2/5 just because it's easy.
Don't buy this game, if you do you'll just be throwing your money down the drain. This game is terrible. 1/5 stars.
I disagree: if you want to throw your money down the drain, throw your money down the drain. On the other hand, if you're after some underground platforming excellence...download Dynamite Headdy.
Sonic Chaos falls somewhere in between. At 500 points and just 19 Blocks of memory, I recommend it.
Downloaded it the other day, and I must say I enjoy this title. _
Ah the fun I had playing this on the Game Gear. I just got it, and it's so nostalgic. It works for an 8-bit Sonic. I also downloaded Sonic 1 for the Genesis.
Although it ain't as great as thr 1st two Master System games it's great to play despite the difficulty.
Worth the 500 points, I'd say more then the NES games .
This is why I'm glad they threw in SMS games. I had the Game Gear, so this is like playing them again.
I had never played a Sega Master System game before downloading this one on Virtual Console -- heck I'd never even seen an SMS in person. I think the only Game Gear games I ever played were Sonic the Hedgehog and Columns, so this was an entirely new experience for me.
That said, I agree with the review on most points. The graphics are good for an 8-bit era game; the stages are short; and this is a very, very easy title. Another problem: the music and sound effects are TERRIBLE. 5 out of 10
FANTASTIC SONIC GAME...not the best, but not the worst. Terrible review I remember getting this for the Game Gear and loving every bit of it. It also allowed Sonic to start his super run while standing...kinda like the super spin but standing up.
Not really a great game on the Master System at all. I don't recommend you get this on the VC. Stick to the 16-bit ones instead.
Nuclear weapons? What kind of game is this!?
